Comments:This is a message for the family of Bill Oliver. I met Mr. Oliver when my neighbor next door had let his greyhound almost die. It broke my heart because he and my dog a Jack Russell Terrier would run the fence together or my dog would run the fence and Eightball would run half the yard. Mr Oliver got ahold of someone that came and got him and Eighball lived for over another year because of it. Mr Oliver thanked me for helping Eightball but I think that the work he did for REGAP and helping greyhounds is a great cause. Eightball craved love and when I would be outside with my dog he would come over to the fence and just wanted to be loved. When there was fireworks and he would be scared I would go outside and talk to him to let him know everything would be ok. When I had to put my dog down I made sure that Eightball got all of his things because he truly needed them. I miss both Eightball and my son Tinylee but I know that they are probably running all over heaven and having a grand old time.

Comments:Bless you. In the mid-80's, I worked for a Memphis veterinarian who took care of many of the West Memphis, Arkansas greys that raced at Southland. I grew to love greys, and to _hate_ helping kill so many of them. Now I know those dogs, who got a shot of pentobarb and a hug and pat goodbye instead of a bullet through the head, were the lucky ones--the kennels we worked with were the "ethical" ones. We were allowed to rehome a very few dogs, but we simply didn't have the time, space, or know-how to rehab them back then.

I well remember rubbing a C-section pup to life after I'd been told to give up on him. I never learned whether he had a career in racing or ended up being put down at the age of 2 or so because he couldn't run fast enough to earn his keep.

I'm so glad someone is working to rehome these intelligent, loving creatures. If I ever have the space, I will definitely adopt one.

Comments:My husband Jim, Asti our Australian Shepherd, and Pippin our cat were just adopted by Twilite "Dante" six days ago through Michigan REGAP. It's a match that could have only been made in heaven. Dante is a georgous female light brindle. Her big brown eyes just melt you to pieces. She has her ears up more than down and doesn't miss a thing that goes on around her. She loves her morning walk with her new brother Asti and reminds me everymorning at 9:30 that it's time to go (except when it's raining, then she waits). They are slowly learning how to play with each other as both have very different ideas as to what play is all about. She loves cheeseburgers from McD's, she likes to steal mommies washcloth when mommy isn't looking, she loves when the neighbors visit because they bring her treats and spend forever scratching and petting her and she has big soft pillows in everyroom in the house that she takes extra advantage of on a regular basis. Michigan REGAP has been absolutely greyt in helping us to give Dante a safe, secure, and loving home. The support they give to adoptees is fantastic and greytly appreciated. Thank you Regap for bringing all the greyt love into our lives.

Comments:I was reading through the list below and someone asked about a solution for 'de-skunking' a dog. I did a search on yahoo and several other sites and the best idea that I've read is a mixture of: 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap (possible dawn since it cuts grease so well, or ivory because it's very mild.) This amount will take care of a cat-sized critter, so adjustments need to be made accordingly. There is also a product called "Skunk Off" that I've personally tried, and it worked quite well. I believe I purchased that from the vet. Both solutions must be mixed only at the time you need them and any unused portions thrown away as it becomes ineffective. Hope this helps anyone who happens upon one of those pesky beasties. By the way....tomato juice DOESN'T WORK. Just an old 'wive's tale'.

Comments:I hope someone can help us! We were accepted for adoption
@Dairyland in Wisconsin. We fell in love with a beautiful 2
1/2 year old beauty named Aaron. The only problem...our 7
year old cockapoo got a little nasty on our 2
meetings...but we discovered it was fear! When Aaron tried
to play with Queenie she became so scared she started
foaming at the mouth and then our 18 month old silver male
poodle got scared and was standing over her in protection.
As much as we loved Aaron...in our hearts we knew it was
not fair to all concerned. We already have purchased all of
Aarons food, toys, bed, and kennel. We just left there
this morning with heavy hearts. Could you please tell us
if you ever get a mom with pups...We know if we get a pup
she will be great just as she was with our Cody when he
came to her as a pup...now he is 3 times her size but she
is not afraid as the growth was gradual and she attached to
him immediatly as a babe. Yes...we could purchase a pup
and it's not the money...we want to adopt and feel like we
are rescuing a babe! I have read where people have adopted
a mom who is pregnant...If you can help us,
PLEASE...contact us by e-mail or telephone: 630-204-
9807...We are just so sad...We really thought we would be
bringing our Aaron home but we were reassured today that he
has others interested in him and should go to his forever
home next week. Thank you,
Patti

soon I found that my grandma was looking for a dog like a
greyhound. We found REGAP on a pamphlet in the vets office.
My grandma sent a letter to REGAP. After some more research
she found it was the right breed for her. It was a long
wait to adopt our greyhound, but that's because they wanted
to give us the right dog to fit our needs. A year later we
got Berkley! He is a very friendly brindle greyhound. I
would recomend REGAP to anyone who is looking into adopting

Comments:Hello all greyhound owners and lovers. My boyfriend and I just adopted aour first greyhound about two months ago. Her name is "Yucon Frosty" (Frosty for short). She is 4 1/2 and was two weeks off of the racing track when we got her. Her body is all white with a half dollar size brindle spot on her left lower back by her spine, her ears and face are all brindle but her muzzle is white. Very beautiful. She has takin a liking to our youngest siamese cat and carries him in her mouth as if it were here baby. They play for hours until Frosty gets tired. We had to bye a bigger couch (as she is a BIG couch potato) and moved the loveseat into the bedroom, where that's has become her bed at night so she don't sleep with us because there is no more room on the bed for two people and greyhound, however she is a BEDBUG and enjoys sleeping with me when I am alone.
We are looking to meet anyother greyhounds that live in Oregon and wouldn't mind if we found a few new friends to play with when we go to the beach, as we go very often. We live in Coquille and would love to meet new friends of her kind. So if anyon is interested in meting at the beaches in Bandon we would love for you to e-mail us at Lonnie411@webtv.net. Can''t wait for a reply.

We also would like to know why she ws retired, as she is only 3 years old. We think that she may have had back problems, as she has back pain if we allow her to run. If anyone knows how to find out such info, please Email it to us!
Also, does anyone out there have a grey who does "goofy Greyhound"? When we take her out to do her puddle, she will often do play posture, and then race back and forth, sometimes doing a complete backflip! I only worry that she will get away, or injure herself. Sometimes, she will do this in the HOUSE, which we call "house horse"..she races around like the wild man from Borneo!
Since wehave only had her for 5 months, we would appreciate any advice!

Comments:We have a brindle Greyhound named Magic. We have had Magic
for five years (almost to the day) and he is everyones best
friend here including our kids, we all love him dearly. I
think what you are doing for the retired Greyhounds is
wonderful beacuse they deserve a good home after retirement,
and they really do make wonderful pets. Keep up the good
work.

Comments:Great site!!! Can you include a few GH pics on it? I adore
the greys and hope that one day (when I have more yard
space and my husband decides a FOURTH rescue dog will be
ok...LOL) I can open my home to one of these great
animals!! Thank you for all of your hard work and
dedication to this wonderful breed!

Comments:I adopted a 2-year-old girl a little over a year ago from
REGAP of Connecticut. I must say, having a greyhound took
some getting used to...when I first got Sassafrass
(formerly Pullett/Mallory) she followed me everywhere, was
terrified of our 4 cats and one dwarf rabbit, and loved me
no matter what mood I was in! Well, after more than a year
Sassy still follows me everywhere (when she's awake!),
still loves me always, and is of two minds about the cats
and the rabbit...if they're coming towards her, she'll run
and hide, but if they're moving away she'll follow, ears up
and tail wagging, until they turn around to see what she's
doing. Advice to anyone considering adopting one of these
beautiful, sweet, loving dogs: make sure you know what's
involved...going out every 2 or 3 hours for the first few
days, being home all the time for the first week or two,
NEVER letting the dog off its lead unless the area is
securely fenced...I would also suggest reading Cynthia
Brannigan's "Adopting the Racing Greyhound", and then, if
you know it's right for you, go for it! Greyhounds really
are the king of dogs!

Comments:Hello,

I just wanted to tell you that I adopted a Greyhound 10
years ago from the REGAP in Indiana and have been enjoying
the wonderful companionship of Connor since then. He is a
lively old man now – 12 years young. He’s got his age
problems, as we all do, but continues to live up to
his ‘kingly’ name.

I also thought I’d send you a recent picture of him. Thank
you all for all the good work that you do!

By the way, the expression on his face came from someone
asking him if there was a squirrel around.

Sincerely,

Trish Rendon

Lafayette, Indiana

p.s. I tried to email this to you, but it got returned.
I've included a url so that u may see his picture - as well
as his younger brother, Cully, a lab/dane cross (Cully is
short for Cuchullain, the champion of Connor MacNessa in
Irish mythology)

Hello!
(I go by the nick-name of Lanie.) I and my husband,
John, want very much to adopt a beautiful greyhound. We
live in a small town and have a chain-link fence around the
back yard. My question is--Can we adopt if we have other
pets? We both work days, but our granddaughter is here at
lunch, would that keep us from adopting? We keep our pets
inside always and take them with us camping when we go.
Sincerely,Lanie Twigg

Comments:I have been delighted with "my fella", Taj (formerly Nike)
from Illinois REGAP, adopted in June last year with help
from the wonderful Michalskis. I am concerned about our
proximity to several large families of skunks by our home.
After two close calls already ( ! ), I'm anticipating some
smelly action this summer. Is there a decent remedy
(besides tomato juice, which doesn't really work) for
neutralizing the odor? (for him as well as me, since I'll
get "hit" if I'm at the end of a 6 foot leash...) Keep up
the good work - and every day, I'm happy to say I've been
running into more and more greyhound adoptees with their
proud "parents". Thanks! Danielle

Comments:I just recently got a computer and am learning to use it.
We are doing fine. Doc has had three battles with cancer
but is doing good. Mayo Clinic is keeping him alive. It
makes me feel so good that Regap is still alive and kicking.
I do see and talk with Marcia Latz of Rochester--her group
is doing well also. She helps us with our Greyhound when we
are at the Mayo Clinic. I don't know who reads this--but it
is intended for the Matras's. God bless all of you.
