REO DISCONTINUES FAN MERCHANDISE

REO Speedwagon has finally discontinued offering personalized keychains, mugs, mousepads, puzzles and posters to fans on its corporate site. After numerous complaints of undelivered merchandise over the past year, the band finally addressed the situation. Keyboardist Neal Doughty stated, "The personalized items section has been removed from the site and we no longer work with that company."

"That Company" was WebPhotos Entertainment, hired by REO Speedwagon to fulfill fan merchandise orders. The company, representing the band, has long been a source of frustration for many fans. For well over a year, the band was aware that fans were not receiving merchandise they had ordered. Particularly frustrating was the fact that no contact information for either the company or the band was available. Without such basic information, assistance was not available through typical watchdog consumer agencies such as the Better Business Bureau.

There's no word yet on how the band will address the situation where credit cards were charged months ago for merchandise that was never delivered. Neal Doughty stated, "They [WebPhotos Entertainment] say no credit cards were ever charged for unshipped items. Check your statements to be sure." However, many fans reported their credit cards were indeed charged.

In addition, fans reported that they received unsolicited spam email from subsidiaries, affiliates and other vendors for whom WebPhoto Entertainment was providing products or services. The terms and conditions of ordering merchandise required fans to disclose their name, email address, mailing address, day and evening phone number and credit card information.

This information was then shared with other undisclosed commercial vendors. WebPhoto Entertainment stated, "We...share information with subsidiaries, affiliates and other vendors for whom we may be providing products or services. Although our subsidiaries are subject to this privacy policy, affiliates and third party vendors...may receive information that you provide when ordering a product from our website."

We are grateful the band has finally attempted to address some of these issues concerning fan merchandise. We trust there will be restitution in the future.

Comments:Judy, I saw that $120 grand per show for REO in some trade publication a couple years ago. It may be higher now. My point is that if REO really wanted to help out their crew, they could easy donate just 10% of ONE SHOW'S earnings and make more $$$ than 10 meet & greet fundraisers. It doesn't look to me like their heart's really in it.

Comments:Well, I knew roadies didn't get paid anywhere as much as the bands, but you think they would make at least an average income. At least $35 to $65 thousand a year. Or am I wrong? Hey I'm a little over that range and my children have most of their college tuition. I guess it's the way you live, and how you save.

Whoa! REO is averaging $120,000 per show? I didn't know it was that much. Is that before expenses, for road crew and stuff?

Comments:Early REO fans will remember Bill Fioro, later known as "Duke Tumatoe," who played guitar for REO during Alan & Neal's college days in the late 60's, before REO cut their first record deal.

Here's an update from the Pal-item.com on Dr. Duke and the Power Trio, who are still rockin' the midwest. If you've never been to one of his shows, you'll enjoy it.

TUMATOE WOWS CROWD ON RETURN TRIP
August 16, 2002

By Karen M. Puckett
Staff writer, Palladium Item

Jimmy Buffet fans are better known as parrot heads and Grateful Dead fans are deemed dead heads. So what on earth do you call a Duke Tumatoe fan? A tomato head.

Roosevelt Hill at Glen Miller Park was filled with tomato heads Friday night as fans surrounded the band shell to hear the famed singer. Duke Tumatoe and the Power Trio were part of the park's summer concert series. They shook the stage and charmed the crowd with their unique musical style and sidesplitting tunes.

"I've probably seen him 10 times," said Lynne Greene as she set up her lawn chair. "I went to college in Bloomington; he was popular there." Greene wore a black t-shirt bearing the tomato design that has become the sign of a true Tumatoe fan. She came to the concert with friends and her daughter, Emily, who grew up listening to the band. "My favorite song is 'Gonna Tie You Up'," said Emily with a giggle. "We have a bunch of CDs. I really like his style."

Heads were bobbing as the band played a wide mix of bluesy music with howling guitar riffs and comical lyrics. Many in the crowd could be seen singing along as they tapped their toes to the deep backbeats. "I love this stuff," said James Tremble, who was also wearing a Tumatoe t-shirt. "I don't follow him everywhere, but that's only because I have to work."

As much as the fans love Tumatoe, Tumatoe also loves his fans. That was evident as he played audience participation songs, in which the crowd became a part of the music. "It's really nice to play here again," said Tumatoe, right before the show. "We've got a bunch of new songs and instrumentals to play for everyone tonight."

Tumatoe and his trio are promoting their eighth album, Big Bang, which is available for purchase. A native Chicagoan, Tumatoe was a founding member of the band that became REO Speedwagon. The musician went on to form The All Star Frogs, a popular Midwest college-circuit band, from 1970 to the early '80s. In 1983, he began performing with The Power Trio. "

Comments:Roadies never get anywhere near what the band gets paid, and they sure don't have some cushy retirement plan.

What gets me is this "charity" event will only raise a couple hundred dollars. That's just pocket change for multi-millionaires like the guys in REO. If they really wanted to help out, they could just donate a portion of their earnings. Last time I checked, REO was pulling in at least $120,000 grand per show. If they only donated 10% of that, it would be $12,000. Auctioning off four tickets like this will only raise a pittance.

I know it's not my business, but a production manager for Celine Dion and REO was unable to save for his child's education? I guess those people don't get paid as much as we thought.

Most of us on average incomes have savings bonds and such put away by the time our children are in their early teens.

Comments:A couple of announcements:

Pepsi just debuted their new "Vanilla Pepsi" product on August 8, and they chose Gary Richrath's song "Ridin' The Storm Out" to be featured in the ad. But don't look for Pepsi drinkers to be rockin' to REO. In this commercial, a Vanilla Coke truck driver is stopped at a light, listening to old school REO. In a slam that implies Vanilla Coke is behind the times, the Pepsi driver whips out a new CD which launches into a supposedly hip, urban score as he drinks his new Vanilla Pepsi. To view this 30 second spot, check out Pepsivanilla.com, then click on TV Commercials. Make sure to disconnect the annoying background noise on the far right.

Comments:How is everyone in REO Land? I forgot to post my review of the REO-Styx-Journey show in Duluth Georgia. This was at the Gwinnett Center right outside Atlanta.

REO opened the night, and played to a nearly empty house. I don't know if people just blew off REO or had trouble with traffic, but nobody was showing up until the beginning of the Styx set.

REO led off with Ridin' the Storm Out. It was the exact same set list they've been playing for 20 or more years, and the band was bored out of their mind. The only thing new was Kevin making cracks about going to the Playboy Mansion to oggle the girls. The lady next to me said he was too old to be pulling crap like that with little kids at home. We couldn't hear the rest of what he said, because his microphone was fuzzy. Something about people confusing the band with REM. My hubby poked me and asked if Kevin was gay like Michael Stipe.

Well, the more Kevin talked, the more people he pissed off. By that point, if people hadn't already gotten their beers, they were heading for the aisles.

If there was a highlight of the night, it was Dave Amato. He made all kinds of painful grimaces, and it looked like he was having trouble remembering the chords to quite a few songs. For a while there, his tongue was hanging out. It looked really, really gross, especially blown up on those big monitors.

Dave finally hit his stride when the band closed with Roll With The Changes. I don't know exactly what happened, but he must have been twirling around, acting like a hot shot, when all of the sudden he slipped and fell flat on his butt. I mean, we're talking sprawled out like a squished spider with arms and legs flailing. I laughed my ass off! He wasn't hurt or anything, but everyone thought it was funny. I guess even rock stars get a dose of reality every now and then.

REO's roadies were clueless and never even bothered trying to help him. I guess they figured he was down for the count. He'd probably still be lying there if it wasn't for Journey's singer giving him a hand.

When the lights went down after RWTC, I thought they might have to call the paramedics and get a stretcher for Dave. It can be pretty serious when a 50-year-old guy takes a tumble. He could have broken a hip or something, and been out of commission like Steve Perry.

Next up was Styx, and when that big freakin' carrot appeared on the Jumbotron, people were scratching their heads saying, "What the hell?" But they put on one heck of a show. Highlight for me was a song by Glen Burtnik that was called "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye." People were saying he wrote it about Dennis DeYoung.

Finally, Journey came on stage with their new lead singer. It was creepy. He sounded EXACTLY like Steve Perry, and I kept thinking "Where'd they get this guy? American Idol Steve Perry try-outs?" Neal Schon played the national anthem, which I thought was Journey's highlight.

In all honesty, Styx stole the show that night.

Comments:JBANDIT: We've repeatedly asked SONY/EPIC to re-release this album in the U.S., but so far they've declined. It was re-released in Europe in CD format in the early 90's. Copies occasionally appear on EBay, but watch out for the "Federalist" record label. This is just a poor quality bootleg from a scratched up LP recorded onto a CD.

As for the original RTSO vocals, it's a long story. Suffice it to say, the originals can never be released until the band finds them.

MUSIC DINOSAURS LIVE IN HALL OF SHAME

Mick Jagger has been named alongside Michael Bolton and Celine Dion as one of the 50 worst artists in music history.

Paul Oakenfold, Bob Geldof and cult band The Doors also made the list compiled by US music magazine Blender.

It ranked Jagger at number 13, mocking the Rolling Stones frontman's solo ventures as worse than something produced by a "tone deaf six-year-old".

David Bowie's ill-conceived rock band Tin Machine fared even worse, listed at number 12, and described simply as "really, really bad".

Jamiroquai's Jay Kay was on the list, named as the 25th worst music artist of all time, and dubbed "the white, talentless Stevie Wonder".

The magazine rated Bob Geldof's solo efforts at number 39, saying he "should have stuck to saving the planet", while Mike Rutherford's group Mike and the Mechanics was listed at 43.

Kenny G, Vanilla Ice and Michael Bolton all made the top 10, edging out Celine Dion who was ranked at number 26.

The Doors were named at number 37, with the magazine criticising singer Jim Morrison for inflicting his "terminally adolescent views on the wider world".

Rap-rock duo Insane Clown Posse were named the worst music artists ever by Blender.

The pair are best known for an ongoing feud with Eminem and for once asking Sharon Osbourne to "buff my pickle" on the Howard Stern radio show.

Blender's editor, Andy Pemberton, said: "If I were any of these groups, I would be angry about making the list - but they should be better. It's their fault they're on it."

Comments:Speaking of OLD GEEZERS like Neal Doughty, here's what the Chicago music critics are saying. You'll find REO in the final category of "Geezers who never mattered and are now less relevant and more offensive than ever."

EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE OF GEEZER ROCK
August 10, 2003

BY Jim Derogatis POP MUSIC CRITIC

Bob Dylan. The Dead. The Allman Brothers. Jethro Tull. Steely Dan. Aerosmith. KISS. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Scan the concert listings from the last few weeks through the rest of the summer, and you'll be forgiven for thinking that the year is 1973 instead of 2003.

There's a practical reason for the proliferation of dinosaur rockers this and every summer: The concert industry has a lot of large outdoor venues (including the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park), and it needs acts to fill them to draw customers who'll spend their hard-earned dollars on overpriced hot dogs, beer, T-shirts and parking.

With a handful of exceptions--Pearl Jam, Metallica, U2 and R.E.M. among them--the '80s and '90s produced few artists who have sustained long careers on the level of the arena acts of the '60s and the '70s. So the older bands continue to dominate outside the smaller theaters and clubs where fresher, more vital sounds tend to be made.

But there are other factors at work as well.

Still the largest generation in American history (some 76 million members strong), baby boomers are reluctant to let go of their youth, though it is now several decades behind them. They remain nostalgic for the sounds of their teens and early 20s, and they are willing to spend money (sometimes quite a bit of it) to relive what Springsteen called the "Glory Days."

Nostalgia is still a relatively new concept, and many scholars view it as a byproduct of fears about industrialization and modernization. With Greek roots meaning "to return home" (nostos) and "pain" (algos), the word was coined in 1688 in a medical treatise by a 19-year-old Swiss physician looking to describe a severe and sometimes lethal form of homesickness. (The good doctor was studying soldiers suffering from a mysterious malaise as they served far away from their mountain homes.)

In the Victorian era, the word came to signify a spiritual sickness rather than a genuine illness. In 1874, the poet Arthur O'Shaughnessy called nostalgia "the disease of the soul." More recently, scholar Susan Stewart dubbed it "a social disease" and defined it as "the repetition that mourns the inauthenticity of all repetition."

Parse the academic-speak and Stewart is basically saying that it is foolish to live in the past--especially a glorified, rose-tinted past that is largely a fictitious re-creation. Or, as the columnist Art Buchwald once quipped, "Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a bad memory."

At the risk of waxing nostalgic myself (none of us is immune from this disease), I've spent a considerable portion of my career as a rock critic railing against artists who peddle nostalgia. As an editor in the early '90s at the late, lamented Request magazine (more nostalgia!), I initiated a column called "Geezers" to cover the latest offerings by stars who were well past their prime but refused to retire. It garnered more hate mail than anything else the magazine ran, and I was promptly branded a disrespectful ageist.

To me, the best rock 'n' roll is immediate, urgent and vital--it is music that celebrates living in the moment. It is also often (but not always) the music of rebellion, but crotchety senior citizens can rebel as much as youngsters, if not more so (having lived longer, they have more to be ticked off about).

Lapsing into geezerdom has nothing to do with aging; a handful of rockers are continuing to make essential music even as they prepare to begin collecting Social Security (though they are, without a doubt, the exceptions). And plenty of artists who are barely in their 30s have already given up the ghost and adopted the geezer mindset.

For the most part, geezerdom is a sin based on championing nostalgia--admitting that your most creative days are far behind you and that you choose to celebrate the past rather than look toward the future or making a truly joyful noise in the present. However, with so much nostalgia flooding the concert scene, it's becoming increasingly clear that all geezers aren't created equal.

It turns out that there is actually a range of geezers, from those artists who are basically geezers in name only (since they're still creating and moving forward with all of the energy of musicians a third their age), to those who are the musical equivalent of terminal patients on life support.

In an effort to make sense of this summer's many gray offerings, what follows is a graduated scale of geezerdom, with attempts to single out some of the most notable candidates in each category.

GEEZERS WHO STILL MATTER

As I said, this is by far the smallest and most select group, but it is also the most encouraging. Rock 'n' roll is an attitude more than anything else, and nothing says that you can't carry that defiant lust for life to your grave at a ripe old age, even if few of our graying heroes seem likely to do so.

Bob Dylan: At age 62, the voice of his generation still refuses to be pigeonholed in that role. Playing with one of the strongest bands of his career, he reinvents himself onstage every night, and he continues to write new songs that are good enough to stand beside some of his very best.

Neil Young: The crotchety old Canadian (he turns 58 in November) angered some fans on his last tour with Crazy Horse by playing his new concept album in its entirety, offering only a handful of his standards during the encores. But Young was obviously passionate and excited about his new music, and anyone who bothered to listen wouldn't have been disappointed at all that he skipped playing "Cinnamon Girl."

Peter Gabriel: The 53-year-old art-rocker's last album "Up" was his best in a decade, and on the tour that brought him in June to the Tweeter Center, he once again set standards for musical excellence and theatrical imagination in the concert arena.
OTHER GEEZERS WHO STILL MATTER: Laurie Anderson, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Wire, John Paul Jones, Brian Eno, the Buzzcocks and Pere Ubu.

GEEZERS WHO DON'T MATTER BUT STILL PUT ON A GREAT SHOW:

I maintain that there's nothing unfair about judging an artist by the best work that he or she has produced in the past; what other standard is there? The musicians here are no longer hitting those highs with their new material, but they aren't just phoning it in onstage. In concert, at least, they continue to take the music somewhere new and exciting.

Bruce Springsteen: The faithful will argue about slotting the Boss in this category, but this isn't the place to start squabbling about "The Rising" again. Even as a non-believer who's sometimes overwhelmed by the gospel-tent hokum, I'll grant that Springsteen and the E Street Band make an awesome noise when they're properly inspired. Let's hope that they are when they come Wednesday to U.S. Cellular Field.

Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (who turns 58 next month) was adopting the persona of the jaded aristocrat when he was still in his 20s, so it's no surprise that he's aging well. Though the singer and his core Roxy bandmates Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay aren't even pretending to move forward with new material, they still deliver a mix of icy cool sophistication and fiery art-rock excitement in concert.

Iron Maiden and Motorhead: One of the reasons that heavy-metal bands age better than artists in other genres is that the music was never about celebrating youth. The other is that all that matters in this field is whether you can still deliver the high-octane goods. Both of these acts do, as they're sure to prove when they perform Sunday at the Tweeter Center.
OTHER GEEZERS WHO DON'T MATTER ANYMORE BUT STILL PUT ON A GREAT SHOW: Metallica, the Allman Brothers Band, Jethro Tull (performing Aug. 22 and Aug. 26 at Skyline Stage), Jeff Beck (Aug. 26 Arie Crown Theatre), Joe Cocker, Ringo Starr (Tuesday at the Rosemont Theater), James Taylor (Thursday at the Allstate Arena), Carlos Santana, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Arthur Lee, Robert Plant, Heart, Ted Nugent, ZZ Top, Blue Oyster Cult, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, David Byrne, Joe Jackson, Pink Floyd, the Pretenders, Yes.

GEEZERS WHO REALLY
SHOULD KNOW BETTER BUT CONTINUE TO DISAPPOINT US

Jane's Addiction: The twisted Los Angeles quartet and godfathers of alternative rock made a strong new album in "Strays," which should have qualified them for Category One. But during their headlining set at the revitalized Lollapalooza last month, they chose to live in the past, playing only a few of the strong new tunes and favoring material that was more than 10 years old. Shame on them.

The Sex Pistols: During their last reunion tour, Johnny Rotten and his mates contended that coming back to take our money was the ultimate act of punk rebellion. Even if you bought that flimsy justification, there's no defending round two of the cash-in. They may have changed rock forever by sparking the punk explosion, but when they perform at the Aragon Ballroom on Aug. 29, they will have become the greedy dinosaurs they initially sneered at.

R.E.M.: For years now, singer Michael Stipe and guitarist Peter Buck have been complaining in interviews about the impersonal nature of arena rock, and they've been promising a small theater tour of acoustic music augmented with strings. So what do we get? Another big stadium jaunt, coming Sept. 26 to the United Center. The favorite sons of Athens, Ga., also lose points for continuing without drummer Bill Berry (something they vowed they wouldn't do), and needing several hired hands to flesh out their sound.
MORE GEEZERS WHO REALLY SHOULD KNOW BETTER BUT CONTINUE TO DISAPPOINT US: U2, Patti Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

GEEZERS WHO REALLY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES AND OUGHT TO RETIRE IMMEDIATELY

This ignominious grouping includes any band that is pressing on despite the absence of one or more key members; which has somehow soiled its legacy beyond repair with the vapidity of its new material, or which is just so embarrassing these days that it should be paying people to come to see them instead of the other way around.

The Dead: Even before Jerry Garcia left this earth, diehard Deadheads and the band members themselves were granting that only "one in three" shows was magical and something really special. The other two could be dreadfully dull, plodding, pointless and sloppy. I don't know about you, but those don't sound like good odds to me.

Aerosmith: The hard-rocking Stones wannabes of the '70s have long since been replaced by sad and leering dirty old men who hire Diane Warren to write soggy ballads in a desperate attempt to score hits. Aerosmith circa 2003 is so bad that it makes you forget this group was once great. When it performs with KISS (which also belongs on this list) at the Tweeter Center on Sept. 5, the top ticket price is an unforgivable $128 plus Ticketmaster service charges. Will the show be worth it? Dream on.

Ozzy Osbourne: The Clown Prince of Darkness was never particularly cool, even when he fronted the pioneering metal band Black Sabbath. But in recent years (even before the introduction of his MTV reality sitcom), he's become a parody if not a laughing stock, dumping water on himself and his fans in a pathetic bid to generate excitement, but accomplishing nothing other than dousing our enthusiasm.

Other geezers who really should be ashamed of themselves and ought to retire immediately:

Fleetwood Mac (Sept. 13, United Center); 10,000 Maniacs; Dave Gahan; the Misfits (with Joey Ramone, et al.); Crosby, Stills & Nash (with and without Neil Young); the Beach Boys, and Chicago (which performs Sunday at the Rosemont Theatre).

GEEZERS WHO NEVER MATTERED AND ARE NOW LESS RELEVANT AND MORE OFFENSIVE THAN EVER:

There isn't much to be said about this sad lot, other than the fact that it's hard to believe these artists ever had a career in the first place, so of course it's impossible to understand why they're still alive and kicking. All of the names below have disgraced Chicago area stages this summer (or will soon do so). If you saw and enjoyed any of them, I don't mean to poison your memories. But be honest: You don't get out much, do you?

Here they are: Jimmy Buffett, Boston, Poison, Skid Row, Vince Neil, Rick Springfield, Huey Lewis, Dan Fogelberg, Pat Benatar, the Doobie Brothers, Bon Jovi, Journey, Sammy Hagar, .38 Special, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Night Ranger, Peter Frampton, Whitesnake, Warrant, Kip Winger, Slaughter, Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins (Aug.19, Chicago Theatre) and the Village People (Sept. 6, Ravinia).

Clinging to the sounds of their youth, nostalgic concertgoers continue to flock to big arena shows by the elder statesmen of rock. We contend, however, that not all graybeards are created equal.

Comments:OPEN LETTER TO MR. KEVIN CRONIN

Hey Kev.

The Lord blesses you every day, does He not?

I suppose you must be in a very hard position, in a way. You still have a cooking band, and yet people just wanna hear classic REO. You could sit and write what you would consider the best songs of your life and go through the motions and put out an album that kicks all the butt you want, but still you'd be out there touring and folks'd wanna hear "Like You Do" and "Lay Me Down" and "Any Kind of Love" and all that.

I'm gonna be honest with you bro, I own pretty damn close to every REO album and I have to say that nothing compares to the old stuff. It's not your fault: life's like that. We all grew up with REO being part of our life's soundtrack and the new stuff doesn't figure in it. That's just the way it is. I know you know what I mean, judging by the set lists of your current shows. I was super proud of you guys when during the Clinton administration Building the Bridge was the electoral theme; not a lot of bands have that honour, as you well know. I root for you guys. I own that Building the Bridge album, but it's far from being my favourite. You must have worked extra hard to get it out there by yourselves, bereft of commercial support. Kudos. Myself I like to pride myself on my past accomplishments and past memories of once having been some rocker dude out there who once had his day. It's over for me, but I think you guys still have it in you. (And God knows you must be so fed up to the teeth with all the Gary Rooters out there busting your chops to allow him back in; but you really can't do that to Dave, can you? He stuck by you guys and he's doing a dynamite job.)

Much as I dislike Building the Bridge, if you guys were to put out another album and another one and another one? - I'd still run out and get it. I'm a fan, Kev. I'm one of those guys who thinks the sun rises and sets in your pants. We still love you, guy. But if I were to just open up for one second and allow myself to speak freely? - I'd tell you to ... take chances again.

We all know that you guys tried really hard to break through and that when you did, you probably molded the recipe in concrete and made a plaque out of it: Thou Shalt Candy Coat Your Rock 'n Roll in Nifty Three Minute Packages That Play Well On Commercial Radio. But think back on when you guys first started - when you yourself first got hired. What were you like? You took your place, you allowed yourselves elbow room in your song - everybody had his little moment in the spotlight. Those unorthodox bridges and breaks out of the blue ("Any Kind Of Love", "I Believe Our Time Is Gonna Come", "Like You Do"), those lengthy guitar solos ("Summer Love", "Being Kind"), those long mood-setting moments (pick one)... babe, that's what made you guys special, along with all the other Supertramps and Bostons and Deep Purples of the world.

Sit the guys down - have a meeting. Burn incense, draw the shades and smoke your plant friend Lucky together and give us what still sleeps inside of you, guy: lay your testicles on the table and give us some rock 'n roll. Come on - how many more albums you guys got to you? And this is coming respectfully from someone who's a longtime fan, Kev: I'm not trying to be a smartass. You can reheat "Can't Fight this Feeling" for us as many times as you like for us when you tour, we'll come. But if you're gonna do the album thing again - and we all pray that you do - give us more of what set you apart in the first place. Set yourselves apart from all the candy-ass Top Fourty wannabes again, and do your fans a favour.

Let there be rock.

Your fan, very truly

Rockenheimer

Dave Amato slipped and fell on his butt during "Roll with the Changes." It was actually pretty funny. I don't think anything was hurt except for his pride. Lucky for him, Journey's lead singer was there to lend him a hand and wipe off his tush.

It is great to see REO cashing in on concert market. I am hoping for the Richrath tour with REO, now for that I would pay $100.

Comments:I have enjoyed your website. I went to school at the University of Illinois at the time REO was starting out there. I remember going to a club house at some apartment complex when they were just getting going and were practicing there. They had a guitar player then named Bill Fiore (sp) who later became Duke Tomato. When they first started performing live around campus, they had another guitar play whose name was Steve. I think his last name was Scarfino. He was great guitar player, and everyone was intially disappointed when he was replaced by Gary Richrath. But Gary soon won everyone over. They played for free on the University's Quadrangle many times and had a regular gig at a club called the Red Lion, where I say them many times. The band was primarily a cover band whose set consisted of such songs as Black Hearted Woman by the Allman Brothers, Southbound Train by Mountain, and Down By The River by Neil Young along with many of the songs that appear on the first REO Album. They always closed with the Rolling Stones Sympathy for the Devil. It was not unusual to see the band members around campus, shopping at the local grocery store, or at Uncle John's Pancake House which was a late night hangout. Neil worked at place on campus called No Hassle, which was kind of a hippie pants store owned by Irv Azoff, their manager and my fraternity brother at the time. They had a real big following on campus and everyone was anxious for them to record an album, not thinking that when they did become famous, they would no longer be the local campus band anymore.

We walked away dissapointed with Journey and Styx. When paying several hundred dollars for tickets we were there for the moment, not to be a captive audience, for there "new music". I would have probably purchased each of their new albums (CD) but they gave me a heads up to the dissapointment I would have experienced. Don't get me wrong about the new music, it was clean and managable, but it was not the top 40 classics I paid to see. I am not alone here either. During journeys 2nd new music song, It looked like a bear break as approximatly 20% of the audience had had enough and headed for the doors. Half way through there set at least 40% of the audience abandoned them.

I understand there were two created. The one I want is the one that starts with the picture of the baby at the beginning, fades into the Kevin and the band performing, then shows a little boy growing up, getting engaged, etc. The final scenes are a great fade of a couple growing older, their son leaving home, the wife disappearing.....and ends with Kevin as an old man.

It's a really cool video....I can't seem to find out if this particular video is the one that's on the Anthology tape.

Thanks a million...

Comments:Hi,

My name is Éric. I reside in Montreal, Canada.
I’m a big fan of rock group Survivor for nearly twenty years.
I seek your help today for good reason.
Survivor has opened for or was part of Reo Speed Wagon concerts when they toured.
I am certain that somebody has taped the Survivor gigs whether in audio or video format.
For those of you who would like to share your tape, which will a great favor to me, I offer to remasterize the audio format on CD + MPEG2 absolutely free.
The show you have with Survivor will be completely reformulated at no cost to you.
Plus if you have solo gig of Reo Speed Wagon I will convert that for you as well.
A VHS tape can be damaged with time – so it’s important to keep the show best quality you can.
I will even cover the shipping and handling fees.
The shows you have which are rarely listened to, can be enjoyed more often on your sound system or in your car with higher quality sound. I will cover all tranferral charges.
I can also purchase them from you.
If you have shows I can be reached at seal30@videotron.ca.
Please pass on this message to anyone who might be interested.
Thank you very much in advance and hope to exchange material with you soon.
Best regards, Éric Arbour

I just read all of your comments and I was very suprised to see some of these bands were not inducted into the Rock 'n Roll hall of fame!! Prince has some good songs and that but when you have no back to your pants that is just wrong and should be disqualified right there... But i guess that might just be me! Just from the descriptions of the websites themselves, it's pretty clear what meets her censorship standards. These are actual statements taken directly from the sites.

Rock 'n' Roll Fantasies: "I hope to allow fans to not be ashamed to share their fantasies...no matter how... romantic. Fantasies are a very healthy part of life, and can even be a positive key factor in the wellness of our emotional and mental selves. Everyone needs a release..... fantasizing is that release. Why not bring them both together, and add to that the music and musicians that feed our emotions?"

REO Babes: "Our mission, to drool over, gush about, dream of, discuss, and admire Kevin Cronin, Dave Amato, Neal Doughty, Bruce Hall, and Bryan Hitt.....as only women can truly do. To provide a place for droolers like ourselves... who enjoy the freedom of expression without damnation or judgment from fellow REO Speedwagon fans that may not approve or understand..."

Comments:If anyone is watching VH1's countdown of the top love songs, REO's Keep On Lovin' You is #34. It's refreshing to actually see REO on VH1 when they aren't bickering with one another like they were on Behind the Music.

I've always wondered how a band that has spent decades cheating on their wives, using drugs and fighting with one another could ever write such an incredible love song. Maybe what they can't achieve in real life, they try to accomplish through their music.

Comments:Anyone know how much was raised yet in that "Rescue the Rockers" concert? Did even a penny go to rescue anyone except a couple of aging classic rock bands in desperate need of publicity? Or was it like last year's Volunteers For America fiasco where less than half the money raised actually went for charity?

There are 2-3 decent songs on it, but some of the singing is off-key. You can tell they rushed to get this out because some of the songs don't really sound finished. Kevin sounds strange on "I Believe in Santa Claus." I had to hear it twice to believe it was really him.

Just a note about bands being spontaneous. With a concert like Rock to the Rescue, that would have been nearly impossible with all the logisics. Besides, Kevin Cronin isn't going to bust out singing "LET ME RIDE" when he can't remember the words, the guys have forgot all the chords, they can't remember what key it's in, and the last time they can even remember hearing it (all the way through) was in 1976.

Frankly I think Kevin should use a telepromter if he keeps forgetting the words so bad. I mean, he wrote these songs, didn't he? How old is he, anyway?

Comments:JC, you're probably right. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. But in the case of REO, it's really not teaching them "new" tricks. It's more like them polishing up their old tricks. I'd like to see them do that instead of playing the same 13 songs again and again. They are a band with a ton of songs, if only they'd stop being lazy, resting on their laurels, and get off their butts and do some rehearsing.

I kinda know where Becca's coming from. With every show, you think, "Is this the one where Gary Richrath will come back on stage?" or, will "Kevin actually be spontaneous and pull a song out of his hat?" Now, this summer he did perform that Xmas song a couple of times, but people laughed at him. I don't know what he expected. It's hard to get into a Xmas song in July.

Comments:That's my point right there, you don't want to be disappointed but you are, everytime. If you go to cafe' and you're not happy, do you keep going back? Maybe once or twice, but sooner or later you'll get tired of it and quit. Does that mean the cafe' will change it's menue, probably not, if they still do enough business to keep them going.

That's how REO is, there are a lot of people who don't like seeing the same show over and over, but there are still some that do. Unless that following dies out they will continue as they are. They're apparently still doing enough business to keep them going. You all say it's not much, but it must be enough. And when that following does die, they will probably retire. All's I'm saying is don't waste your money if your disappointed with the shows. I really don't think they'll change anytime soon.

Comments:Nobody goes to an REO show wanting to be disappointed. But somehow, the band just keeps turning out one lackluster performance after another. This band easily has 50 songs they could play over their 30 year history. And what do they do? They keep playing the same 10 songs over and over and over again.

For me, I keep clinging onto a kernal of hope that Kevin Cronin will step out of his comfortable hush puppies, and dust off a few tunes we haven't heard for years.

It's true that every concert, I'm disappointed. But I'm such a HUGE fan, I always give the band the benefit of the doubt. And although it's always an OK show, it's much less than what I know they're capable of.

The question is, how much longer are people going to keep paying to see these guys? I went to 3 shows this summer, with the crowd about the size of my high school gym. Unless REO is touring with some other band, they just don't draw people to come see them by themselves.

Comments:Why do you people spend good money on a show that you know your going to be disappointed with? Don't get me wrong you have the right to do what you wish with your cash, but why blame REO afterwards for your disappointment? Everybody knows REO hasn't put out any new stuff in years, so of course you know it's going to be the same old songs over, and over again. It's like paying to see the same movie over and over, and getting mad because the ending stays the same.

As far as bad reviews go, it seems not to effect REO too much. They still have a following that doesn't mind paying big cash for the same songs $50 to $70 a pop. If that following ever dies out it will probably be time to retire, after all they're not spring chickens anymore. And probably have plenty of cash to last them.

All's I know is if you don't like the shows you've seen, don't pay for anymore. I really don't think, it will make or break them either way. Just wastes your hard earned money

I can see why even die hard fans boycott these events. It just looks like that's what happened in Cleveland, with the place half empty.

Comments:I bought my tickets early to see REO at Rock to the Rescue in Cleveland. Here's my take on the whole situation. From the very beginning, the whole event seemed very disorganized. If I didn't know better, I'd say they were having a Chinese firedrill on the stage most of the time. Nobody (and I mean nobody!) seemed to know what was going on. People had about 10 minutes to perform, then they were wisked away only to reappear again with some other band. Very strange.

Waiting for the headliners took forever, and a lot of people left before they ever came out. I would estimate that not even half the people who bought tickets stuck around, and the place was more than half empty to begin with.

I agree Eddie Money and John Waite probably got the best crowd reception. They both seemed to have a lot of fans there. When it came to the headliners, Foreigner put on a so-so show, so even more people left. I'm sure REO and Styx only played just a few songs because there were so few people. But we were glad we stayed, because Bad Company, with Paul Rogers, totally stole the show. They were the best band by far, and I totally did not expect that.

I think it is wrong to blame the promoter when tickets don't sell. At some point, the bands need to take responsibility and realize that people get tired of seeing the same old songs always presented in the same way.

I stayed to the end of the concert, but it was a mistake. My ears are still bleeding! The sound was the worst I've ever heard, and they were way too loud. REO ended up playing only 6 songs (Ridin' The Storm Out, Take It On The Run, Time For Me To Fly, Back On the Road Again, Can't Fight This Feeling, and Roll With The Changes) so that was pretty disappointing, too.

For you, that worked out to 50 bucks a song!!!!! Was it worth it?

First off....REO SPEEDWAGON, DOES, WILL AND WILL ALWAYS ROCK! Yes, I may be a 37 year old who doesn't want to grow up, but these guys gave me all my fondest memories and for that I am grateful.

I paid an obscene amound of money to sit in the sixth row and The Meadowlands Arena. I found out after I got there, being the arena was maybe 1/2 full at that, it wasn't necessary.

I was really there to see Styx and Reo, my 2 favorite bands. The people who know me consider me obsessed!

RAVE REVIEWS FOR REO SPEEDWAGON. At first, they came out and only did a couple of songs. I felt cheated. I was expecting a longer set, but they came out later and did more which left me feeling euphoric. I thought Kevin sounded great, the guitars were amazing and everyone had a great time. I stayed through it all...Styx rocked, although without Dennis DeYoung, who I have also seen solo on every occasion, the chemistry was gone, just my opinion.

Foreigner...poor Lou, couldn't get it together, so us loyal fans helped him out.

Most of the crowd was gone by the end. This was a poorly produced 8 hour show with veeery long breaks in between sets. The crowd got restless. People get old, that's the bottom line. Not this Jersey girl. Any cute single rockers over 30 still loving this stuff????? Let me know!

REO was so together! The guitars were incredible, Kevin's voice, as usual, was pristine. Yes, as many others have said, the sound stunk, and I did pity Foreigner as the closing act. Comments:I am cracking up that REO and their hatchetmen are already blaming the promoter for poor attendance at these shows. Jeff Albright of Albright Entertainment is first class. He was the promoter for Rock To The Rescue. He can't help it if some bands (who are named after old cars) sing off-key, forget the words to their songs, and generally put on a show of tired old songs that people have heard again and again.
Why is it bands always blame the promoter? Didn't REO blame their promoter last year when their shows had to be cancelled because of poor sales? They should be glad that at least a FEW people took the trouble to come out and see them play! Wake up and smell the coffee, REO. You can't blame your promoters for everything.

Comments:The Rock To The Rescue Concert, October 19, Continental Arena in NJ

While the crowd I don’t think ever reached over 8,000 it was sizable enough to make this charity event all worth it. Tommy Shaw put this concert together for the families of the Port Authority Police lost on 9/11. Though we (as in myself, my wife and her friend) left a little early, it was a great night overall. About the only downside was having someone sit next to me who thought he could sing and shouted along with every song (just kidding Dave…you sounded great).

Damn Yankees – Jack Blades, Tommy Shaw and Damon Johnson kicked things off at about 5:15 by doing “Coming Of Age” as well as “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” and “Rock In America”. Jack was his usual energetic self and was good way to kick things off.

Derek St. Holmes – Jeez, can this man sing! Only out for two songs, St. Holmes made a lot of people sit up and take notice as many were not sure of who he was (he used to play with Ted Nugent in case you also don’t know). He played whipping versions of “Hey Baby” and “Stranglehold”.

Loretta Ponce – She’s a violinist for people like Bon Jovi and Sheryl Crow. We found this as a good time to get beers and hit the bathrooms. Her Celtic melodies did sound nice in the concourse.

John Waite – Truly the first big response of the night. The opening chords of “Change” got the place rocking and John continued through “Back On My Feet Again”, “Missing You” and “NYC Girl”. Fantastic.

Survivor – The band kicked off with a song I didn’t quite recognize but rocked pretty hard. “I Can’t Hold Back” followed. Of course, they finished off with “Eye Of The Tiger”, in which they brought out special guest Aaron Carter (!). I kid you not. It was surreal but the kid wasn’t half bad.

Mark Farner – The ex-Grand Funk Railroad leader, another beer break for us. He sounded pretty good though.

Felix Cavilere – The ex-Rascals frontman. We were still on beer break, listening from the concourse.

It was about this time we hooked up with Dave Baldwin and his wife for another beer and then headed to our seats for the headlining sets.

Styx – The first headlining set of the night and also, amazingly enough, the first time my wife or I ever saw Styx. They played about five songs and brought the place down. Now I can say that Gowan fits in with the band nicely, his vocals were great and he’s got a great sense of showmanship.

REO Speedwagon (acoustic) – the boys from REO came up to kill some time and were pretty impressive.

Mark Farner/Derek St. Holmes (acoustic) – more time killing and they were a lot of fun on “Some Kind Of Wonderful”.

Bad Company – Some sound problems did not get in the way that this was the highlight for me. I’m what you call a casual Bad Co. fan but they just kicked ass (and I hate that phrase). Kicking off with a new song (no idea of the title but it was good), they rolled through all their expected hits including an incredible version of “Rock And Roll Fantasy” which incorporated a Beatles medley. Paul Rogers sounds astounding.

REO Speedwagon/Foreigner – An absolutely horrible sound (it was WAY too loud) had us fleeing for the doors. As much as I like REO, we stayed for only two songs as the brash mix just was painful to our ears. But since we’ve seen both bands before, we felt it as good time as any to call it a night as it was already pushing 11PM with no end in sight.

CLASSIC ROCKERS HALF FILL GUND
10/21/02

By Anastasia Pantsios

An overflowing stage of classic rockers joined forces last night at Gund Arena in an nearly eight-hour event dubbed Rock to the Rescue.

What headliners Bad Company, Styx, REO Speedwagon and Foreigner, along with 11 (!) opening acts "rescued" was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Educational Fund and the Port Authority Police WTC Survivors Fund. The same ensemble performed the previous night at the Meadowlands outside New York.

Given the lineup, one couldn't help reflecting that rock itself had supposedly been rescued from this sort of white-male guitar-oriented hard rock. When the headliners were in their prime (mid-1970s for Bad Company, late '70s to mid '80s for the others), bands such as the Clash, Talking Heads, the Pretenders, R.E.M. and U2 were emerging in droves, sonically diversifying rock.

Well, there's justice, I suppose. U2 still sells out Gund Arena. And these acts, which routinely sold out such facilities once, didn't even half fill the building. (Another factor was likely the plethora of high-priced, special-event, classic-rock concerts in the area recently: Springsteen, McCartney and the Stones.)

All the acts showed lots of enthusiasm if uneven musical results. The show itself felt like two separate events: the headliners and the three-hour nonstop opening set with acts performing brief sets of their hits in front of an all-star house band.

Best received were Cleveland favorites Eddie Money and John Waite. A low point was the rock-god preening and jingoistic rambling of Grand Funk's Mark Farner.

Show organizer Tommy Shaw of Styx, Nightranger's Jack Blades, ex-Ted Nugent vocalist Derek St. Holmes and Survivor provided yet more '80s rock.

Young violinist Lorenza Ponce was either a favor to someone or a desperately needed token female. Her droney ethereal music was out of place, as was her lack of a classic rock connection.

Rock hall inductee Sam Moore was the token black presence, capping a mini-soul/funk segment that also included the blue-eyed soul of fellow inductee Felix Cavaliere and Edgar Winter. He closed the set with a heated jam on "Soul Man" that brought on most of the other musicians. In fact, one of the nicest aspects of the show was walk-ins. Shaw dueted powerfully with Moore, and Farner provided backing vocals for Cavaliere. Shaw and REO's Kevin Cronin were on and off stage all night.

The four headliners each performed 40-minute sets whose hit-oriented composition any classic rock radio listener could guess.

Comments:I'd just like to register my dismay about REO doing another one of those so-called "benefit" concerts. What the hell are they thinking? Why don't they just come clean and tell people the only ones really "benefitting" are the bands? They collecting millions of dollars, and wind up giving hardly anything to charity.

Case in point: Last year's "Volunteers for America" rip off scandal. With full houses in Atlanta and Dallas, SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS in ticket and memorabilia sales should have been raised and given to charity. Instead, the "victims" only wound up with a couple hundred grand.

Instead of "Rock to the Rescue," they should call it "Rescue the Rockers." Bands misusing charities to bolster their sagging attendance and CD sales should be hung out to dry.

Comments:Hey Don/Buford! Elkhart was a rockin' concert, and we've got some fabulous pictures. Hope you enjoy 'em!

Bill: R.E.O. stand for Ransom Eli Olds, the inventor of the Oldsmobile. REO keyboardist and founder, Neal Doughty, actually came up with the name of the band while he was sitting in a "History of Transportation" class at the University of Illinois in Champaign in 1968. When he walked into the class, the words "REO Speedwagon" were written on the blackboard -- the very day the guys were searching for a cool name for the band.

An REO Speedwagon is a flatbed truck, first built in the early 1900's. It was very high-speed and heavy-duty for its day, and was considered a milestone in the history of transportation. It was sometimes outfitted as a fire engine.

Hope this helps! Thanks for a timeless question about a classic rock band!

Comments:Rebecca -- All of Kevin's "Keep" songs are on the Time Flies Anthology: Keep Pushin', Keep on Loving You and Keep the Fire Burnin' plus the Key, I Need You Tonight, and Time For Me To Fly. Gary Richrath's songs include Only the Strong Survive, Shakin' It Loose, Say You Love Me or Say Goodnight and Ridin' the Storm Out. This one is a "keeper!" LOL
