Comments: Hi,

I have been poking around on the internet and have been fortunate enough to email a couple of breeders of this lovely cat. I notice that either the persian/exotic or the BSH is used - and I truly like the BSH look over the persian/exotic. Any ideas where this breed is headed in looks? Also, (and I've already mentioned this to the very gracious Pam Sharp) but I'm interested in a male SH cream/red or blue. I like a large cobby cat - and BSH looks NOT exotic/persian. I like a cat with a nose and eyes that point forward!! Also I'd love to hear your information about the temperment of the Selkirk. I want a cat who wants me back and who will allow me to pet him/sit on my lap. Is the Selkirk smart? My devon rex spoiled me in that regard.

Thanks,Val

Comments: I'm looking forward to my new Selkirk baby girl in a couple of months. We lost our beautiful curly boy last month to congenital heart disease at only 18 months old. Selkirk-seekers, please be careful where you buy your kitten. You can tell a quality breeder by talking to them directly and the good ones offer lifetime health guarantees for CONGENITAL diseases. My boy had runny eyes and my vet sent me to a compounding pharmacy where they made up drops that helped considerably. I do not know what they were made up of thow.

Comments: We own Penelope, a straight longhaired pure white selkirkrex. She is spayed and 3.5 years old. She has been having wetting "accidents" on the carpet. Can you give us some suggestions to stop this behaviour. We've had to the vet and there doesn't seem to be a medical or physical reason. We also own Sebastien, a SHD grey cat about the same age. He is a nuetered male who joined our family a month prior to Penelope. We love Penelope so much and hate to give her away. Thanks

Comments: Bo and her sister Muffy constantly have runny eyes. My vet said that due to the structure of their face tears can't run down as easily. They build up and can cause an irritation. I am not aware of any thing over the counter. I have found that wiping their eyes each morning when it is the most prevelant helps them.

Comments: Yes, I'm happy & in love with my great big Selkirk.

I have a question, however. He seems to constantly have a problem with his eyes "weeping". I am concerned that he may have a inherited deficiency. My vet says that his facial structure is just prone to this kind of condition and that he picks up eye infecions easily.

Does anyone know if there is an over-the-counter eye treatment solution that could help me to help him?

We have 3 other cats & he is by far the most fun-loving but independent of the bunch. He is very affectionate but wants it to be on "his terms".

Thank you.

Comments: Hello i just wanted to let everyone know that I recently got a Selkirk, I was buying a himalayn kitten and the breeder gave me the selkirk because she had way to many kitties! She is the best cat ever, her name is Lucy she has a dark brown face, tail and legs. The rest of her is a light brown and she has bright orange eyes. She is so curly our neighbors refer to her as "the jerry curl cat" she's very round I just love her!!!! She's very well behaved and she'll even carry on a conversation with you! She loves to be brushed but always ends up looking like a big poof after we brush her. I couldn't ask for a sweeter more loving animal, i would reccomend this breed to anyone looking for a sweet, well mannered cat.

Comments: We live in Australia and have just started to show our first Longhaired Selkirk Rex kitten. For one show I bathed him the day before and did not brush him. He looked like he had tiny little tight ringlets all over him but the ringlets layed very flat. His second show I bathed him 5 days before and brushed him after bathing giving his coat time to go curly again before the show. He had bigger fuller curls and his coat was fluffier but not as curly as the first show. We are the only people showing Selkirk rex's with our association so we can't compare our cats. Could someone tell us what the prefered coat presentation is in the US. Any tips on how others present their cats for a show would be fantastic. Thanks - Gary and Jenny

Comments: I am interested in finding out more about whether this breed (esp. the short hair curly's) create allergy problems for those who with this propensity! I have found I am ok with some cats and not others - not himalayans for instance. Can anyone advise? I live in kingston On and would be interested in actually being able jto see/play with one for a bit to get a better 'feel' for them. They seem absolutely wonderful. Had cats for many years and would like to consider a kitten. Like the appearnce of the plush curls!

Any suggestions from anyone re locations nearby?

Comments: I am very interested in making my home a Selkirk kitten's own. Any breeder out there who has a litter can e-mail me at squidgirl@hotmail.com I live in Michigan, USA and am currently looking for a female. I would prefer to pick up the kitten (will travel to Ontario, Canada, Illinois and Ohio) but shipping is always an option.

Okay, with that out of the way.....I have been researching the Selkirks for a while now and I am very impressed with them. I am very eager to purchase and play with one. What are some experiences you have had with them? What, in your opinion is the #1 reason to own one (or let one own you)? Is there anything negative about them (besides the general litterbox mainenance EVERY cat comes with)? Do you have anything to say that would help me out in my quest for a kitten? I would appreciate any comments you have on the felines! Cheers!

Comments: Hello from Canada
Wow what a breed! I own Precious Curls Cattery, and thanks goes to Mary Devilian Jones, for her help and mentorship. She has given me my Anna and Blondie which started the whole dream. I now am on my 3rd litter with 3 show/breeder prospects. Anna had a blue and white male and a cream tabby and white female and to cream pointed. I also have Jenny (Blondies baby) due on June 3rd,02 she is a beautiful short haired cream point with tabby markings. She has been breed with a silver chinchilla male persian. I expect beautiful Silver babies. SO RESERVE now. Hopefully show/breeder prospects out of this litter too! I also have a new litter of Blondies, straight haired (long and short) with blue eyes and they will all (6) be cream pointed. If anyone is interested in one of these Selkirk Beauties, or to look at pictures of my kittens please email or call me!

Comments: I love showing my Selkirks. It's exciting introducing a new breed. Selkirks do have infinite patience like I've seen everyone writing. They are a very loveable cat. We have a few litters each year, always watching to see if we're going to get curly or straight. It's a mystery, it's love at first sight!

Comments: Hello! I just aquired 2 Selkirk kittens this summer - A
shorthair orange cream (from Dahozho) & a longair smoke/
black (from Reigningcats). They're both curly girls. As
for "infinite patience", mine certainly qualify! Both go
limp when held & rarely struggle or claw. The little black
one sits peacefully on my lap as I read outside the coffee
shop below my apartment, totally unaffected by the blareing
traffic & loving the constant attention of the patrons.
They're angels! I also notice, however, that they are
probably the clumsiest cats I have ever known! Is this
typical of the breed? They're constantly falling from
tables or bookshelves & colliding with eachother (and ones
almost a year old!) the one ran down my hall headfirst into
a closed door the other day! Question for black Selkirk
owners - my black girl is about 7 months old and recently
her coat is becoming very grey (with the exception of her
face, paws, & belly). Is it a winter coat? Will it effect
her show potential? (I know nothing about show quality,
etc, but I'd like to try showing them)

Comments: Strange..my creme Selkirk absolutely loves eating plastic,
too! The sound of rusteling plastic bags evokes an
exictement in her of unbelieveable proportions. Another odd
obsession...one day I came home to find a pack of Wrigley's
spearment gum completely ripped to shreads & scattered
throughout the apartment (small bites taken out of each
piece, foil & all) At first I immediately blamed the
younger, black (& ultra mischevious) Selk.kitten, holding
the gum under her nose "Does this look familliar???!!",
strangely, she did not crumble under the interrigation (she
is almost always guilty). Then, very calmly, her usually
mature creamy step sister walked over, sniffed the gum,
daintily pulled it out of my hand and walked away.
Pepermint Chicklets have the same effect on her- she will
walk across my chest & sniff my lips obsessively every time
I chew it.
