| Comments: | CHINA DIARIES
Millions of Chinese in the eastern part of that country lived and died under forced occupation by the Japanese Empire in the 1930s and during WWII. The new book, China Diaries, is a historical-fiction, “must—read” on this forgotten subject. I could not put this book down! In fact my daughter kept telling me to stop reading and talk to her, this from a teenager. I have personally known American and Allied military members who were POWs of the Japanese, so I went looking for this book to read. The Holocaust in Europe continues to be well documented in both the press and Hollywood, but not the barbaric atrocities that the Japanese inflicted on China. For the most part the Japanese got a get-out-of-jail-free pass from General MacArthur. He told the occupational forces that controlled Japan after the war, to be nice to the Japanese and do not make them feel bad about things like war crimes. To this day Japan still makes a major effort to ignore their past. There is next to nothing about their war crimes taught in the Japanese educational system. Japan is winning with their efforts to hide their dirty large secret. Most of the world does not know or care about the horrors that this small island nation delivered onto millions of their fellow Asians but reminding the world of Japans crimes of death and destruction is the underlying theme of the China Diaries. China Diaries is a fast paced book with a great story that holds the reader’s attention, but more importantly it is a necessary history lesson. China Diaries is historical-fiction, but the events surrounding the story, unfortunately, are very true. As I read the book I found myself doing internet web searches on different points of history in the book, and the author Louis Stannard, got it right. After speaking at length with the author I learned he was an Air Force pilot for eight years, and then flew for Pan Am Airlines for 26 years, his book China Diaries is about a naval aviator turned Pan Am pilot. That naval aviator, Alex, meets and marries Anna, a White Russian woman, who lives in Hong Kong and also works for Pan Am, just prior to Pearl Harbor. Anna’s Russian parents are living in Japanese occupied Shanghai, and she is trying to secure their safety. She is the central figure of the book and I have no doubt her story will appeal to female readers. This is not to scare off the male, military-enthusiast readers; there is more than enough in this book for all readers, especially WW II veterans who fought in the Pacific. There are great detailed descriptions of the Pan Am “Clippers” and that contribution to 1930s world travel by air. These giant flying boats that connected the US and China in a matter of a few days travel where before it had taken weeks by ship. The story brings out the efforts that Pan Am made to support the US military in the early days of WWII. The mission of the US Marine Corps in China prior to Pearl Harbor is an active part of this story, a point in history that is not well known. I write this with two purposes in mind. First as a review of a well researched and written book that is great entertainment, there is enough “boy-meets-girl,” action, suspense and love to hold almost any readers attention. It is however the political side of the book that holds my attention even after finishing the enjoyment of a good read. Japan has been allowed to ignore what they did to China. They were in there killing, destroying, and subjugating millions of people for almost ten years prior to the US entering WW II. Their hate directed violence toward all things non Japanese did not stop until the second atomic bomb was dropped on that nation. The failure of the Allies (read General MacArthur) to try the Emperor of Japan for war crimes and hold that island nation accountable for their atrocities has allowed them to go unpunished for the millions that nation killed. But the US Marine Corp has not forgotten and that memory of Japans brutality is a primary reason that on any given day approximately one third of the world’s finest infantry organization is posted on Japanese soil. Read Louis Stannard’s China Diaries (www.ChinaDiaries.com), it is very entertaining, but more importantly, it is our history. Major Van Harl USAF Ret. vanharl@aol.com |

| Comments: | Thank you very much for this beautiful tribute to our heroic servicemen and women. My father was in WW11, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, he put off getting married and starting a family well into his 40's to fight for this great nation. Quite a few Auncles did too. Then my oldest brother joined the US Army and voluntarily joined the war in VietNam, though he came home 'unharmed', he was spit on, called a baby killer and was treated worse then any animal should ever be. But, I was, and still am, so very proud of him! He still fights that war each and every day of his life, through the flash backs and the memories that he alone must live with. Sure, he came home, whole, and for that we are grateful, but his body is now racked from the disease's he must live with from being caught in Agent Orange, and from the terrible dreams and memories that will never fade for him. I am thankful for my Dad, Uncles, Cousins and my wonderful brother, for friends, and the men and women whom I will never know, or get to Thank. Thank you so much for creating this site, where someone has the grace and the 'guts' to say what should have been said over 30 years ago. Bless you. Please keep up the wonderful work. Toni |

| Comments: | "The Man in Blue, Johnny Cash"
John R. Cash died today, 12 September 2003. Everyone knows him as Johnny Cash the great country and western singing legend. But what a lot of folks do not know, is Johnny Cash was a military veteran before he was a country singing star. Before he was the “Man in Black”, Airman Cash was the Man in Blue-Air Force Blue. He was born in 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas and grew up on the family farm. He finished high school in 1950 just in time for the Korean War. While most young men, waited for the Army to draft them for two years of service, Johnny Cash joined the Air Force for four years. He trained in Texas, where he met his first wife and then shipped out to Landsberg, Bavaria, Germany. He spent most of his Air Force enlistment in Germany. He came from a family with a musical background, but was extreamly poor and buying musical instruments was low on the priority of needs. He was able to purchase his first guitar at the Base Exchange while stationed in Germany, using his military pay. I remember hearing an interview of Mr. Cash, talking about the fact that his military pay, regardless of how little Airman’s pay was back then, was the first real money he had. The guitar was most assuredly a luxury he could never afford back home, as the son of an Arkansas sharecropper. He formed his first band while in the Air Force, called the Landsberg Barbarians. It was made up of his fellow Airmen. He entertained GIs as well as the local Germans. The difference was, unlike Private Elvis Presley; Airman Johnny Case was not already a famous singer while “posted” in Europe. In the Air Force, after teaching himself to play the guitar he started writing music. He served in the Air Force until 1954, when he returned to Texas to marry his wife and eventually moved to Memphis, Tenn. Now as a civilian, veteran Johnny Cash used his G.I. Bill benefits, to attend a radio-announcing course, at a broadcasting school in Memphis. When you look at his singing career from the 1960s through the 1990s you don’t think of Johnny Cash as a veteran. His “Man in Black” image, partly came out of his feelings for the Vietnam War. However I discovered that Mr. Cash toured Vietnam for the U.S. State Department and performed for the troops. His hard living, alleged drug and alcohol abuse and run-ins with the law did not set well with some in the Veteran community. But this was his life after serving his country. I can remember being on leave with my career Navy father, headed home to Iowa when I was in grade school. It was a long drive from where we were stationed in Idaho and we listened to Johnny Cash on the radio singing “Five Feet high and rising.” All that summer, much to the chagrin of my family, I ran around sing “how highs the water mama - how highs the water papa.” I couldn’t remember the rest of the words. It was the front lawn of veteran Johnny Cash’s home, that a young Captain named Kris Kristofferson landed on, in an Army helicopter. He presented himself as a songwriter to Mr. Cash. After Captain Kristofferson left the service, it was veteran Cash who helped launch the music career of veteran Kristofferson. Veterans helping veterans in the entertainment industry is becoming a thing of the past. The main reason is there are so few veterans in the music, TV and motion picture business. Even with all the patriotic music coming out since 11 September 2001, most of it is written and sung about veterans-not by veterans. While it is wonderful music and great performances, I still have to stop and remind myself these performers have not “been there.” The entertainment industry and the country music world lost a great performer today. They however are not the only ones who felt a loss. The veteran’s of this great country lost one of their own. Former Airman Johnny Cash is gone, but I can assure you this is one veteran who will not be forgotten. “We buried another veteran today-it seams all my life it happens this way.” Major Van Harl USAF Ret. "The Handcart boys" He's lying in the tree line, blood running down his arm. Listening for the sound of the Handcart boys, to remove him from this harm. He flew in on a modern jet that got shot down in this affray. But he is no different than the wounded at Shiloh, trying to survive, till they safely take him away. In the dark of the night she waits with so much pain to bear. Injured in the crash of her aircraft and now this seemly endless nightmare. Where is the chopper that will lift her from the smoke, the fire and the pain? Where are the Handcart boys, hurry, her life is beginning to drain? He was wounded when a round slammed onto the "cruiser's" deck. Shards of metal are protruding from his arm, shoulder and the right side his neck. The corpsman has stopped the bleeding; he's been prepared, to be extracted in the night. The Handcart boys are racing his way, and will be there before first light. Get in, get them out, and hurry back, inside the safety of our lines. It has been this way since ancient wars, to the battles of modern times. The two-wheel Handcart is the way the wounded were removed from battles in past wars. Our modern Handcart has a rotor-blade and sliding doors. Look at history, look at artwork, recent photos or at movies if you will. When it came to removing the wounded and injured off of some war torn desolate hill. It was a Handcart carrying the broken and the dying with their screams of pain. It was a Handcart transporting at Normandy in the cold June rain. Every branch of the service has its modern version of the Handcart boys who respond to the call. They go out for the wounded and dead, bring them back, get them all. Some times the Handcart boys are brought back in a Handcart not of their own. Some times they become the wounded & the dying, and for their efforts, they never come home. There are also women who work these, latter-day Handcarts and their lives too, are on the line. It is a dangerous mission, but just as their predecessors they to make that recovery in time. They move out over the desert, into the night as the sand blows and swirls. These Handcart operators are our Handcart girls. I have a two-wheeled wooden handcart with an old worn flag sitting out on my front lawn. It is not a protest, it's a reminder of our dead, who returned by Handcart, lying there upon. In order to defend this Nation, we will continue to send the brave & young, our freedom they earn. And we will always have a need for the Handcarts, for our wounded and dead, they must return. | Comments: | The Lady Machine Gunner goes to War.
I only met the Lady Gunner once, when she was in grade school. Her father had come to visit me at Chanute Air Force Base, in the little town of Rantoul. She was quiet and did not say all that much, in fact I hardly heard her speak. One might have gotten the wrong impression she was timid or a little meek. I had known her father’s family since I was in high school. I would go over to her grandparents house and try to be my “70s” cool. Her father was younger than I, and he would hang on my every word. When I suggested he not join the military, unfortunately these words he heard. Vietnam had just ended and staying out of the Army was on every ones mind. I was not going to go into the services either, I admit in those days I was a little blind. Who was I, giving advice on such an important subject – I knew so little about. But the military in those days was something you worked hard, at keeping your children out. The Gunner’s grandfather was a Cavalry Officer back in 1943. His old military memorabilia kept in his den, held a strong interest for me. He started out on Army horses with a scabbard rifle at his side. He finished that war going through Germany on a long tank ride. The Gunner wanted to go to college and then on to Medical School. The Illinois National Guard, with its tuition assistance was just the tool. Go to basic training and get a technical skill. Then go back home to college, and just do your weekend drill. In the Guard she started out as a Medic and then became an Army M.P. I was a cop in the Air Force, so her being an M.P. was just fine with me. She attends Eastern Illinois University, out in the prairie, in the land of very few trees. Again this was fine, that is where I got my masters degree. I have a tradition of phoning “old” veterans on Memorial and Veteran’s Day. The list gets ever longer, but some years my condolences to the family is what I have to say. The Lady Gunner’s grandfather is at the top of the list, I use to make the call. Last year on Veteran’s Day I added the Gunner and we talked on the phone in her dormitory hall. The Lady Gunner’s unit got called up for the second Iraq war and send to Fort McCoy. I did not get to talk to her this Memorial Day because she was preparing to deploy. We did a few e-mails and a letter now and then. Then she went “in-country” and the communication has gotten rather thin. The Lady Gunner is now in Iraq trying to sleep at night in that miserable desert heat. As an MP she works a checkpoint on a dangerous Baghdad street. In the turret of her Humvee she scans the area for terrorist activity in that town. Every mindful she is a ready-made target for an RPG round. I watch the news about the Middle East on TV every night. I am always looking for the Gunner, in hopes to see, she is all right. We keep loosing fine young troops to attacks every week. I keep watching the TV screen, looking for the Gunner on a bloody Baghdad street. It looks like the Gunner is going to be there for at least a year. That is a long time to live with a tent, the damned heat and the constant fear. They don’t really want us there, they allege they want their country back. But that is politics and for the Gunner, she only needs to worry about the next attack. My daughter and I sent the Gunner a “care-package” and I heard it finally got there. We sent a couple of Air Force T-shirts for this Army Gunner to wear. I hope she uses them and her limited ties to the Air Force not sever. Because they have American Flags on them and the words “Freedom-Forever. We as a nation just need to get this over with and get our troops back-that’s all. I want her back by next Veteran’s day so I can make my regular “old veteran’s”call. This time she will be a combat veteran who has matured beyond her years. We just want her home, to see she’s well and relieve her family’s fears. The Lady Gunner has seized the moment and met her Nations Call. She is not like a lot of young people her age, who have in life, no-clue at all. She cares; she knows what she needs to do and what is profoundly right. Please God, keep Lauren safe in that dangerous Baghdad night. The Lady Gunner goes to War. Major Van Harl USAF Ret. 4 August 2003 Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM vanharl@aol.com . |
