I found an old round top wooden trunk in a garage sale that had hand-drawn pictures of cowpoke topics and unsigned typewritten poems and songs. Every page is obviously about Montana (79 Ranch, etc.). There are copies of handwritten and signed works by Ben Garthofner (circa 1951), who contributed to your publication. There is also the original of an unsigned song, 'The King of Them All' (about Charlie Russell) that the unknown author notes he sang on KGEZ in Kalispell in the late 1930s. | Comments: | Thank you for posting the Fergus County History on the internet. I do have a correction if you can do it, as a name was inadvertently changed when the history was done. My Dad James Hallock of Belgrade Montana recently passed away (2009 Jan 15) while visiting my brother in Colorado. The information he gave as Fanny Langley Hallock and Abel Odell Hallock was correct. Somehow Able turned into Abraham. I think this is because when my Grandfather Victor Able Hallock was married to Lillian Christina in 1915 in Roy, there was a mistake on the marriage record and the father was listed as Abraham. I guess people thought that Able or Abe was a nickname for Abraham, when in fact the legal name was Able Odell Hallock. When I did a search on Fannie Langley Hallock your site came up, so your site is readable by the internet search engines. Great Job! The site is beautiful and I enjoyed reading it. Too bad we can't print out some of the pages . . . I don't have the copy of the book my Dad purchased. Are they still available? I can give you updates on my Grandparents. They traded their land in Fergus Co., sight unseen for an apple farm in Central Washington (Lake Chelan, Chelan Co., WA). They prospered there and my Dad was the last of five children and was born in Chelan. My dad married and had his three children there, but returned to Montana in 1970 - to the Manhattan, Gallatin Co., area. There we finished school and continued on to MSU. | Comments: | Lots of history...my grandfather was born in Forest Grove in the late 1800s. One of my great-great-grandmothers taught in a one-room schoolhouse. I have relatives buried at the Tyler cemetery which I hope to visit someday. Permission may be needed and a lot of clearing may be necessary, but I think it will be worth it.

The Thomas Francis McNulty who married Edith [Miller] was the son of Cormack McNulty b.1825 and his wife Bridget [also a McNulty] b.c.1827, both born in Dromore Parish County Tyrone, Ireland Cormack's parents are believed to be Charles and Mary McNulty of Dromore Parish in County Tyrone based on death certificates. Thomas McNulty was born to Cormack and Bridget McNulty in Shullsburg, Wisconsin, and baptized on February 9, 1859 in, Shullsburg which is in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. Thomas was the third child of seven children born to Cormack and Bridget. Cornelius the first child was born in New York the next six children were born in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. My great grandfather Bernard McNulty was Cormack's brother. Bernard was married in Shullsburg although living in Oakwood Township in Wabasha County, Minnesota. Cormack and his family located first in New York then in Shullsburg and then next to Bernard in Oakwood Township in Wabasha County, Minnesota where Cormack and Bridget's last three children were born. Note in your story Shullsburg and Wabasha are misspelled. |

Thomas Northy was born 27 January 1865 in Nyängen, Visnum parish, Värmland, Sweden. He emigrated to Rutland, New York 1881. Thomas mother died 1878 and his father died 1879. to Google and searched for: "Roy, MT" + "Peder Hanson" who was my Grandfather, (Mom's Father), who at one time owned several businesses in Roy, and is referred to in the page: "THE HISTORY OF ROY, MONTANA, 1913-1922 FROM TRADING POST TO TOWN" http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtfergus/homestead/old/roy01.htm . Mom, who actually has an email account is trying to write a book about her early days, and I have (scanned) graphics of the family taken in depression-era Roy. If you have interest in any of these suggestions, please write, otherwise, thanks for your work, it was fun to find Grandpa mentioned, but in all honesty, the one line given to our Family hardly represents their influence on early Roy. Among other activities, he owned the General Store, the Bank, and the wholesale lumber yard was owned by his brother, I think. Many of the farmers owed Grandpa money just before the depression, and afterwards, the government said they only had to pay back ten cents on the dollar, and of those, my family history says that Peder tore up the remaining notes, as they were all friends and he couldn't foreclose on friends! | Comments: | My uncle was Don Marso and I started spending my summers with Don and Margurite from the time I was 10 years old 1948 when they were at the Black Butte Ranch(Campain) and then at the McDonalds place West of Roy. Because of the 17 county drought in 1956 I returned to Minneapolis and started working for the Telephone Company. I returned, when Don passed away in February 1969 for 6 weeks to help Margurite with the ranch.
In 1956 I went prospecting in the Judith Mountains with Lynn Phillips and another person for a month and what an experience we had looking for uranium. Great memories! great job. I lived on a homestead with my parents 17 miles east of Roy. We left there in 1931 and moved to Lewistown. Have lived in Seattle since WW2. Still visit Lewistown every year and also Roy this summer. Have a sister (Edith Distad) and two cousins (Helen Bryson and Ann Morgan) in Lewistown. It is a great country to be from. One of the bars in Roy was formally the country school house where I went to school, and was moved to Roy. The small church next to a larger one in the south end of Roy was the Waverly Church moved from the hill just east of our homestead. I remember going to church there. My father did a lot on work helping to build it. Roy looked pretty good when we were there in July. God bless, Don Hull |

Fergus county. I enjoyed very much reading the chapters about what it was like to live there in the 1920's. The family still has a reunion every year in Belgrade and in 2001 some travelled to Fergus county to visit the original homestead. Thanks to Gene Horyna for the tour. |
