Comments:Concetto Avanzato (Jim Vance) was my grandfather. Unfortunately they misspelled his first name, had his age as 63 instead of 53, and only listed 4 children, he had 6.
It is a very good article, though. It was great to be able to read something about these great forgotten men. I happen to be acquainted with a family member of Mr Tickle, and I forwarded this article to him. I'm sure he will enjoy it as much as I did. Thank You!

Comments:It was such an honor to do the tribute for the coal miners. My heart and prayers go out to all miners and there families. My brother was a coal miner. My friends are miners. When I heard about the tragedies that happened in so many mines, I had to do something about it. My heart was saddened and I was in tears when I wrote the tribute, "When Coal Dust Turns To Gold." I'm also honored to sign your Dreambook. So many miners call me from different states and they are touched by my tribute. I'm not the one to be recognized. I did it for the people. The miners and their families should always get the recognition that they so deserve. I will keep all of you in my prayers. Irving E. Rice

Comments:I truly enjoyed your website. My sister, Della Mae Smith was born at Rum Creek August 22, 1937 and I was born there August 30, 1939 but we each now live in Ormond Beach, FL. Our mother, (now deceased but she's still our mother) was Irene Lee Cole of Yolyn but she lived in Baltimore, MD from 1942 through 1995. She practically raised my sister and me by herself (our stepfather was useless and an alcoholic like our 'blood' father).

In December 1995 Mother moved to Ormond Beach, FL, to live out her life near her two children. She died October 8, 1999 at the age of 79. (That date was Daddy Cole's 104th birthdate.)

She had married Marvin Smith in 1936 and divorced him in 1940 for infidelity. (I have a two half-brothers and three half-sisters who live in Parma, Ohio and Las Vegas, Nevada.)

The last time I was in Yolyn was June 2, 2000. My sister and I had driven up for the Smith family reunion at East Lynn. While there we visited our grandfather's (Daddy Cole) gravesite. Ironically, as we were climbing the hill to the website I had a heart attack and spent several days at the Huntington hospital (where they saved my life!).

In the summer of 1954, the year I turned 15, I spent the summer in Yolyn and one of my gang of friends favorite past time was swimming at the Dehue Dam.

I'm blabbering! It's just that some of these memories flooded my mind and I thought I'd share them with you.

Have a blessed life.

Charles

I worked at the "Old Esso" station and lived in McConnell, rode the Rum Creek bus to Stollings Grade and Logan High, so I was very familiar with most of the "Rum Creekers" and most of the parents of the ones my age, since they stopped at the gas station for service or what we called "traded there" so I knew them also. All without failure, honest, hard working people. Seems like only yesterday......

Comments:I was very touched with your web site. I am also a Coal Miner's Daughter born on a mining hill and raised in Gary WVA. I can relate so much to the wars. I have two brothers who went to Vietnam never came back the same. My brother Eddie wa 17 when he joined went to Vietname at 18 as a combat medic. He died in a coal mines in Pinevill WVA after many years of struggling with his demons from Vietnam. My brother Jimmy served his country for 21 years but Vietnam changed him and to this day he is fighting demons from there also. I joined the Air Force in 1970. I was stationed at Dover Air Force Base, as seen to many bodies coming in to the military morgue. I was very proud to serve. My husband spent 25 years in the Army and worked 14 years with the High School JROTC unit. I have a daughter who spent 6 years in the Army and my only son is a Captain in the US Army. He just got back a few months ago from Iraq (his second tour). As you can see I have seen the toll that wars can take. I do appreciate all your kind words. Our military never get enough credit. I would like to print some of your site for use in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp class room. I work at the local high school and my daughter that spent 6 years in the military is now a History Teacher at the High School. I have been blessed because I raised my children the way I was raised back in the Coal Fields. May God Bless You.

Comments:Hello to all, absolutely well done on a beautiful site.
I came across your site looking up the phrase Snow Bird which Dorothy and I had heard shortly before we returned from Florida last week. Though I,ve only had a short while to look through I must compliment on your efforts to date and I look forward so much to revisiting.

I'm putting together a small flyer as a pretend magazine for our friends whom we left recently in Florida and I wondered if you would mind if I used your "Little Bird" introduction for a section of it.
We got ourselves appointed the Entertainments co-ordinator for next year but we miss the U.S and all our friends so much we thought that we would put a little paper out during the period to help our continuing bond.
You need only reply if there is a problem as I can tell from your super efforts you dont need any additional pressure.

Meantime..."La Pheile Padraigh" ( Happy St Patricks Day)
To You and all yours.
Our Kindest Regards,
