Comments:Hello my name is Charles Scott Davis, my dad was Rev Charles E. Davis 8-15-38 ( his brother is Gilbert )and there Father was Raymond Davis.

As I understand it you are the ones who run the family reunion and also are the person who published a book on our family.

1st I would love to buy a copy of that book, second I don't know much of my family and would love to know as much as possible. I understand that Donald was my dad cousin?

I have gotten a lot of information from my cousin Kathy Davis - Stanton.

I am the only male Davis from the branch of Raymond.

PS also if there is a reunion this year can you please let me know of the information, thanks?

Best Regards,

Charles "Scott" Davis

I miss that place. When I see pictures it makes me tear up. I miss my friends also. Most of my relatives are in WV. So, from time to time I visit. I love it here in NC, but WV is home!!!! Thanks for bringing back memories.

His wife Eva divorced him and went to Chicago approx. 1925. I assume he died in the W.Va. area.

Comments:Thank you so much for letting me read your web page. It literally brought tears to my eyes. I spent the whole day reading it from the beginning to the end. Laughed, and also wept. You see, my father was a miner.I remember him telling me about being taking out of school when he was nine years old and made to work in the mine at Cabin Creek W.V. (This was in 1915). Many stories still are in my memories. Most of them are sad indeed. The happy one far out weigh the sad for sure. All my family on dad's side were from Wv. Places like Cabin Creek,Oceana,Kopperston,Charleston,St.Albin's,Pt.Plesent and various other towns. I was born and raised in Ohio. My first visit was to my Uncle Willie's on the outskirts of Charleston at a place called Big Tyler Mt. I was 12 yrs old at the time.(1957) I fell in love with Wv. from that time on.
I may be a 'Buckeye' but my hart remains in West Virginia. Now at the age of 65 and in ill health, I know my life's journey will be ending soon. However this does make me said until I start thinking of 'My allmost home, West Virginia'
Again thank you for being part of my life,
William (Bill) Garrett

lives in mining disasters. My father, Paul L. Taylor, died
from black damp in the Willow Grove Mine disaster. He is the one that was not listed and he lived for six days after the explosion. He was known as the "Songbird of the Mines" due to his wonderful voice and appearance on radio programs in the area. My grandfather, Dr, Charles H. Cale, was mine doctor at Willow Grove and my mother, Helen Cale Taylor, assisted him. My parents were married for six weeks before the explosion.....my dad died on March 21, 1940 and I was born on September 9, 1940.......all I know of my father is what I read in great works such as yours.....THANKS FOR SHARING SO MUCH....PAUL L. I just finished reading "A Wife's Vietnam" I found this book in a thrift store. I too am a wife of a Vietnam vetern. The book has 2 personal messages to Linda Durnbough with manual corrections through out the book. A note card with a written message was left inside, there is wolf on the front and a poem writen by Knud Rasmussen. When I read the forward by Walter P. Knake I had a flash back! I attended the tale end of Dr. Knake's sessions for wives of Vietnam veterns at John Carroll in the '80's (were I worked) and my husband met with Dr. Knake at the V.A. in Cleveland. It was a whole new way to understand my husband and the Vietnam war.

If Dr. Knake reads this; I pray it finds he and his family happy and in good health. You are a wonderful human being!!

Regards,

Kathy Wallack

It is a very good article, though. It was great to be able to read something about these great forgotten men. I happen to be acquainted with a family member of Mr Tickle, and I forwarded this article to him. I'm sure he will enjoy it as much as I did. Thank You!

Comments:It was such an honor to do the tribute for the coal miners. My heart and prayers go out to all miners and there families. My brother was a coal miner. My friends are miners. When I heard about the tragedies that happened in so many mines, I had to do something about it. My heart was saddened and I was in tears when I wrote the tribute, "When Coal Dust Turns To Gold." I'm also honored to sign your Dreambook. So many miners call me from different states and they are touched by my tribute. I'm not the one to be recognized. I did it for the people. The miners and their families should always get the recognition that they so deserve. I will keep all of you in my prayers. Irving E. Rice

Comments:I truly enjoyed your website. My sister, Della Mae Smith was born at Rum Creek August 22, 1937 and I was born there August 30, 1939 but we each now live in Ormond Beach, FL. Our mother, (now deceased but she's still our mother) was Irene Lee Cole of Yolyn but she lived in Baltimore, MD from 1942 through 1995. She practically raised my sister and me by herself (our stepfather was useless and an alcoholic like our 'blood' father).

In December 1995 Mother moved to Ormond Beach, FL, to live out her life near her two children. She died October 8, 1999 at the age of 79. (That date was Daddy Cole's 104th birthdate.)

She had married Marvin Smith in 1936 and divorced him in 1940 for infidelity. (I have a two half-brothers and three half-sisters who live in Parma, Ohio and Las Vegas, Nevada.)

The last time I was in Yolyn was June 2, 2000. My sister and I had driven up for the Smith family reunion at East Lynn. While there we visited our grandfather's (Daddy Cole) gravesite. Ironically, as we were climbing the hill to the website I had a heart attack and spent several days at the Huntington hospital (where they saved my life!).

In the summer of 1954, the year I turned 15, I spent the summer in Yolyn and one of my gang of friends favorite past time was swimming at the Dehue Dam.

I'm blabbering! It's just that some of these memories flooded my mind and I thought I'd share them with you.

Have a blessed life.

Charles

I worked at the "Old Esso" station and lived in McConnell, rode the Rum Creek bus to Stollings Grade and Logan High, so I was very familiar with most of the "Rum Creekers" and most of the parents of the ones my age, since they stopped at the gas station for service or what we called "traded there" so I knew them also.
