| Comments: | My uncle Phillip Paytash of Lafferty was killed at Willow Grove. My mother Helen Paytash Rizzardi kept his memory alive her entire life and I was not born until 7 years after the tragedy but also felt close to my Uncle Phillip because all my life people in Lafferty told me I walked, talked and joked like Phillip. There is a family story that on the morning of the accident there was a March snow storm and my uncle and three friends were not sure they could make it to work. The story goes that my uncle said that they could not miss a days pay and talked the others into going and they all died. I am not sure of the accuracy of the story but it is one my mother told often. I really enjoyed the information in your site. Thank you. P |

In my younger days he took me up there and showed me where they use to get clay from and farmed the hillside.The only reason they would go to the company store was to buy items they could not grow or raise. |

The Old Dehue Elementary school. My first grade teacher was Ms Jackson and my last one was Mrs MCDADE. MY GRANDPA George Hatton Sr worked in the lamp House and I use to bring him dinner in the evening and he would always buy me a 5 cent Pop. I too delivered the Logan Banner as a boy up until the time we left Dehue due to my health problems. |

| Comments: | What a GREAT site! I, too, am a Coal Miner's Daughter. My father worked for Consolidated Coal Co. until they closed his mine down just 3 yrs. before he was to retire. He has been gone now many years, but I know the life and struggles of the miners and their families. I learned of the Willow Grove Mine disaster when I was a teenager and have been interested in the details of mine disasters ever since. I just watched a documentary titled, "Harlan County USA" about one mine's membership into the union and it's 14 month struggle to get a contract. Very good doc. which happened to show a photo of Willow Grove Mine which I Googled and found your site...so glad I did! Everything on this site is just wonderful gems! |

| Comments: | Hello: I was looking for old photos of coal miners when I happened upon your site and read about the Willow Grove Explosion. My dad, John Hodorowski, was in that explosion but survived and as a child and young adult remember stories he told about what had happened. As an older man, he was there for the dedication of the site and interviewed for a local TV spot at the time. My dad has since passed at age 83 in the late 80s. I remember what my mother had said too and how she said she had a premonition prior to and said, "John, don't go to the mine today, I feel like something bad is gonna happen". She had to take my oldest brother, a baby then, look for a man with horse and buggy to get her to the mine site and wait for him to come out. He said lots of the men panicked but he had the good sense to drop to the ground where the fresh air flowed, that is if you weren't one of the unlucky to be in the cave in portion. He got broken ribs and carried a scar on his back for life. Just some of what I remember from his telling. I wasn't born yet. I didn't come along until 1952. Thanks for allowing me to comment. |

Eva Dingus married Jess Bryant and they made their home in Logan for a long time. When I was 18 years old, 1955 we visited them in Logan and I fell in love with that beautiful place. I KNEW I NEVER WANTED TO BE A COAL MINER, AND GREW TIRED OF HIGH SCHOOL, AND ENLISTED IN THE NAVY TO SEE THE WORLD. I MANAGED TO FINISH MY SCHOOLING, AND OBAINED A LAW DEGREE (NEVER USED), AND AFTER AFEW COLLEGE CREDITS IN ENGINEERING, I WORKED IN NUCLEAR TEST PROGRAMS. Dolores Davis, I was surfing the web about the 1988 FIRE BASE CLEVELAND,OHIO(VIET NAM VETERANS REUNION) and found your GREAT web site. VERY VERY NICE.......... I enlisted in the US AIR FORCE in December 1963 and served in Da Nang Viet Nam in 1966 guarding the Da Nang Air base perimeter as a USAF Sentry Dog Handler(366 th Fighter Squadron).See www.vspa.com/k9.htm In 1988 I was a member of the North Olmsted Viet Nam Veterans Assoc. Along with other surrounding Chapters we put together "FIRE BASE CLEVELAND". During that week-end I met a lot of GREAT PEOPLE who came from out of state and the USA to attend this reunion. They were VETERANS,THEIR FAMILIES AND PEOPLE WHO SUPPORTED VETERANS. I will remember this reunion the rest of my life. I'm VERY PROUD to have been a part of this REUNION. |

I am looking for a post on here that shows up in a Google search - from my cousin Pete Taylor, who lost his father Paul (my uncle) in the 1940 Willow Grove mining accident. Sadly, some accounts of the disaster do not count him as a victim but he was - in his heroic effort to help rescue other miners, he died (shortly thereafter) of a black lung type of disease caused by the disaster.
