Comments:I'm looking for information on the Brady family. Patrick and Ellen Brady came from County Monahan, Ireland in 1868 and settled in Catasauqua where my grandfather Michael John Brady was born in 1870. We believe Parrick and Ellen were followed by Patrick's brother Martin in 1869. Martin married Johanna. We have a family legand that Ellen and Johanna were sisters with the surname Sullivan. By 1880 they were all living in the same house in Bethlehem. All four of them are burried in St. Michale's cemetery, Bethlehem.

If you know anything or are a distant cousin who would like to join the hunt, email or call me.

Comments:Thank you for a great site. I'm trying to piece together my Irish immigrant families of John Coyle and Mary McHugh/McCue. John and Mary married in 1847 in Carbon Co, were in Lehigh Co 1860-1880, and finished out their lives in S. Bethlehem. Some of their children married locally to: Dwyer, Henry, McFadden, Boylan, Maloney, McGowen. I believe John and Mary were from Co. Donegal.

Does anyone know who holds the records for undertaker Edward Schaeffer (Fourth/New Sts, S. Beth), 1870-1880?

Have the records for St. Michael's Cemetery ever been found?

Comments:My friends and I used to go on what we called "exploring." We go looking for the paranormal. While we were on our search one night we came across a park and hiking trail down in Freemansburg, PA. My Best friend who is a channeler became possessed by a little girl who we believe to be named "Samantha." We just wanted to know who she was and what had happened to her, but it ended up turning into more than we expected. Every time we would go back the possessions started getting more difficult to to rid her of. After that we apparently drew out the spirit of her father, who was not pleased that of what we were doing. Things started getting worse and worse. Eventually we stopped going down there. To this day we still have no information on her or even if she exsited to begin with. You see sometimes my friend can be a bit of a lier. But the rest of us, who have similar powers or greater, have felt the presence of her as well. I can't find her and I don't think anyone can.

Looking for information on that--ancestral memories, letters, pix that have not yet been published, etc. Ken can copy this sort of thing very easily, and return the originals.

Comments:I was in the Orphanage in Coopersburg, PA I believe it was the summer of 1969. I've since visited the building, which is falling down. I'm trying to search for any information on the orphanage I can find. (One day, while talking to someone, in a private club, somehow... and to this day neither of us can figure out how the subject came up in our conversation), but we discovered we were in the same orphanage, and most likely at the same time. Although I was only there for one summer, while he and his brothers and sisters were there for over 6 - 7 years, we hold very dear memories of the time spent at the Orphanage. (This is only a feeling someone who has experienced this event/period/knowledge can understand. Some may have negative/depressing/pessimistic feelings, others have a different memory/recollection of their time there. (Me, my mother had died, I had been an only child, and through a series of events I ended up in the Orphanage in Coopersburg, PA and for me, I loved it. 1) it was summer, and I didn't have to go to the schooling classes and 2)For the first time I had 'brothers and sisters'.
If anyone spent any time at the Orphanage in Coopersburg, PA, please contact me and let me know when you were there and share with me your feelings and recollections.
Sincerely,
Susan (Murphy) Roth

I am trying to track down records of ancestors in Moore,Northampton,PA.They were on the census in 1870 - John and Mary Anne Bellamy and their children Ida J and James T Bellamy. Also Mary Annes brother James Thorne.Mary Anne died and John and the children returned to England - James T Bellamy and a younger child Nora Annie have been located at different addresses on the 1881 census in England. We have know idea where Mary Anne is buried and no exact date of her death(although a Mary Anne Bellamy is listed in Ancestry .com as dying in 1879 - but no details ).We have looked through loads of cemetery listings but so far no luck. John supposedly returned to PA to wind up business concerns possibly slate quarrying /post office /butcher but vanished without trace as did James Thorne. We cannot find their names on any Passenger Lists.Anyone any ideas?

Comments:Your dedication and love of the subject show on every page. I commend you and your assistants.

I’m looking for descendants of Thomas Holder Morgan and Catherine (or Katherine) Osbourne. Thomas was probably from England, Catherine was probably from Scotland. Thomas ran (managed?) the Eagle Hotel in South Bethlehem from about 1831 until 1836 when he died. He may also have had an interest in one of the area mills. Thomas and Catherine had a total of seven children, but we’ve only been able to identify three – and they did not remain in the area.

Thomas and Catherine’s daughter, Anna, married David Wilmot (lawyer, judge, Congressman, author of the Wilmot Proviso) probably in one of the rooms at the Eagle hotel in 1835. Anna and David lived out their lives in Bradford County, Towanda, PA. Their three sons all died relatively young, none ever married or had children.

Thomas and Catherine’s son, Charles W. Morgan, married (1) Isobella HIPKINS. They lived in Leesburg, Loudoun County, VA in 1850 and in DC when Isobella died in 1864. Charles and Isobella had three children: Thomas, Louisa, and David. David Wilmot Morgan died at the age of 29 in DC (he never married). Louisa Fairfax Morgan married three times: (1) Charles Edward CROCKETT in 1877 in Philadelphia, PA; (2) Emille DITTRICH; (3) Pat J. McCAULEY. Louisa lived in Towanda, PA when she died. Thomas Holder and his wife Rose (Ragan) Morgan lived most of their life in DC. They had 12 children, but only 6 survived to adulthood. The surviving children were: Clarence W. Morgan (+ Julia Frances Edmunds), Donald C. Morgan (+ Sadie Unknown), Mabel Morgan (+ William Reitz), David W. Morgan (+ Eva Unknown), Rose G. Morgan, and Brent Morgan.

Charles W. Morgan married (2) Kate A. Parisen sometime after 1870 in DC. Their daughter, Arizona Amelia Morgan died as an infant in 1877 in DC. They had a second daughter, Emily, born about 1879 in DC. Charles died in Woodside Park, MD in 1895.

Thomas and Catherine’s daughter, Catherine, married a man with the surname of Reed. He died before 1870. In 1870 Catherine was living with her brother Charles in DC and acting as his housekeeper. In 1880 Catherine was living with her widowed sister, Anna Wilmot, in Towanda.

We may have found another descendant (or relative) of Thomas and Catherine Morgan, Daniel T. Morgan, in St. Mary’s County, MD in 1840. He and his wife Mary C. and several of their children (Eugene M. Morgan, Frances M. (Morgan) Colten, Thomas R. Morgan, and Mary E. Morgan), lived in DC in 1880.

This is pretty much all we know about the family. My great-uncle, Brent Morgan (great-grandson of Thomas and Catherine) tried to trace the line in PA during the 1940s. My granduncle, Thomas Morgan (great-great-grandson of Thomas and Catherine) tried again during the 1980s. In about the 1990s the Crockett line of the family tried to track them down. And now another generation of Crocketts and Morgans (I’m Thomas and Catherine’s great-great-great-great granddaughter) are trying again. Please if you know anything about this family (even family legends) contact me. Collectively we’ve been up against a brick wall for over 60 years.

Thanks,
Sharon L. Everett

We have traced our ancestry back to John James who came from Wales and arrived at Phila. in 1711 with his married children and purchased 1,000 acres of land in New Britain, just west of Doylestown. My brother, Davydd Mercer James lived in Bethlehem but, unfortunately, died last summer. I am trying to research my mother's family, Mercer, but without much luck; no one has ever heard of her Mercer family. I accidentally came across your item on Northampton County and had to check out my home county. In case you are curious, the first Robert E. James was a medical doctor in Centreville and married Caroline Dietterich. Good luck with your projeck.

Comments:Please tell all the people in PA to look into the cemetary at Grandin Church just below Phillipsburg/Stewartsville, NJ near Clinton, NJ. It contains "Col. Charles Stewart commissary general of issues" during the revolutionary war for Gen. G. Washington. Born in the county of Donegal, Ire. I know he visited the judge near by & was in love with Alexsander Hamilton's daughter whom visited the judge. Also, a soldier that died of yellow fever in Belle Plains, VA during the civil war is also buried there. These people are amongst 1800-1940 monuments, across from the church. Behind the church has old Monuments from 1910-1960+. People that belonged to the International Order of Odd Fellows are buried there, Obliques, Orbe types, Brown stones etc. Located Rt. 78 East to 1st Clinton exit(Walmart on left of exit) turn right off exit and go towards Pittstown NJ go a short ways than left at the "Y" go down the dip into to the valley farm fields and see the church on the Right. I have done rubbings of stones there since the 1980's it is fasinating! The Klater Family- Many Krater, Craiter, Krieter, etc brown stones in a row,in Hunderdon County at another location. Don't know if this is your family or not, you may email. Very small church. It is kept up but has not been used as a church for many years for it is very small.

Comments:First off, Great Site....will look into the census later...when I have information as to where and when the families that I am about to list....

I am researching several families that have lived in the Bethlehem area.....so hopefully some one will recognize these names...

Joseph H. SMITH married a Mary DRUCH, daughter of Leidy & Ellen HELCHNER, they were married at a young age. According to the census information that I have received they were living in the Bethlehem area. They also, had Joseph's Mother Mary living with them sometime between 1910-1920, Joseph died in 1924. Mary remarried later, but before that she and Joseph had the following children:

Warren, Florence, Preston J., Ralph, Viola, Edward Peter, Walter John (my grandfather), Dorothy, Anna, Charles, Verna, Catherine.

My grandfather (Walter John Smith) married a Dorothy SIMONS, daughter of Reed and Cora REESE SIMONS. They had the following children besides my grandmother: Mary, Kathyrn, Evelyn, Archabald, Jacob, Gilbert, John A.

They too lived in the Bethlehem area, so I am hoping someone will read this post in the guest book and make a connection with either family that I have posted.....if so, please email me...Thank you for such a great site...

William emigrated approx 1870 from St Eval, Cornwall England; his family must have joined him later as they appear in the Cornwall 1871 Census staying with Ann Maries parents. William was a slater working in the quarries at Pen Argyl. Also found the Keat family. Fannie dau of William married a John Keat and Fannie lived to be 100 years old passing away in 1976 and I believe buried in Easton. I have learnt most of this information mainly through this excellent site. I am now working on tracing the Hawks/Keats in PA through to the present day. I believe some Keat descendants live in Bangar to this day but have no trace of the Hawks.

Comments:This is a super site. I am seeking info on George Reuben
Elder (b 1862 in Johnstown PA died 1930 in Easton PA) a
long time Easton resident who owned the house that is now
the Lafayette Inn at 510 Cattell Street. He was VP and
general manager of the Ingersoll-Rand Co., so a leading
citizen. He had a daughter Emily and I believe a son
George R. Jr. Emily married Theodore Fillmore and they had
at least two daughters who are said to have dated Lafayette
students (I suspect the daughters were born in about
1920). The family sold the house in 1937. I have some
reason to believe Theodore died in CA and Emily in IA.
Would love to have the obits for George and his wife (whose
name I do not yet know--perhaps Grace E. Elder, who
belonged to 1st Presbyterian, Easton). I am seeking living
descendents of George's parents, Cyrus and Nancy Jane Swank
Elder who figure in the story of the Johnstown Flood. Both
Cyrus and one of my ancestors were associated with the
Cambria Iron Company and its affiliates. Email me at

Leithsville area.I have found evidence they lived in
Bingen(near Hellertown)around the time of their
marriage.Their children were;Harvey(or
Harry),Robert,James,Lillian and Frank(my grandfather).
James abandoned his family in the very early 1900's when son
Frank was a toddler. He shows up on the 1910 census as a
"handyman" boarding at the residence of Milton Swink of
Bethlehem.Susanna died in 1910 and is buried at Nisky Hill

I've visited various libraries and searched cemetaries(to

I have two publications which I would like to donate to a
legitimate organization dedicated to preserving the history
of Bethlehem, particularly the South Side and the Bethlehem
Steel.

One is a copy of The Bethlehem Booster - Vol. 1, January 2,
1919, No. 17. It was published by the Bureau of Employment,
Compensation, and Welfare, Bethlehem Steel Company.
Considering the age of this magazine, it is in pretty good
shape.

The other is simply titled - Notorious Scabs. It is dated -
Bethlehem, Pa, March, 1910. The introduction to this four
page document reads - "Men who deserted their friends and
fellow workers during the great campaign in the year 1910
against the Bethlehem Steel Company for living conditions
and against Industrial Slavery." I think it is a safe
assumption that this document, which lists the names and
addresses of "Scabs", was published by the union.

Comments:Looking for relatives in Bethlehem PA. My grandfather is
Antonio Agusto Mendes from Portugal. It is believed when he
came over in 1917 he lived with relatives in this area then
moved to Erie Pa. Other name that maybe helpful is Phillips
Lopes who resides in Dansbury CT. If anyone has information
to share I would appreciate it.
