Comments:Hey there Karen!
I see the temperature is in the nineties out there in the St. Catherines-Niagra Falls, Ontario, area. Keeping cool?
It has been VERY hot here in Minnesota's Twin Cities ever since last Saturday. So hot heat advisories have been posted since Sunday.
You may recall in my last note that I like to hit the beach on hot days. Well, it has been so hot it is too dangerous to be outside for long, so I haven't beached it these past few days.
The Chaska library, thank God, is a nice place to visit in hot weather, so I've saved myself from becoming stir crazy by being cooped up at the hotel by visiting here in the late afternoon. They got some good Korean War and World War Two books here that I've been browsing.
Did you know the Korean War is celebrating its 50th Anniversary? It began last year.
Oh the "forgotten war". How close we were to total victory in late 1950...until China crashed the party.
I hope the Koreas become one again. It would only be proper that the Korean people were together under one flag like they had been hoping to do around the end of WWII...only to have their hopes dashed by division, war, then division again.
But enough with the history musings. How have things been with your job(s) lately? Bet it has been a pretty busy summer for you, and now that going back to school is on the horizon, it must be doubly hectic.
Still, I hope you have had fun during your summer vacation regardless, and that summertime in general has been pleasant.
Much more than can be said for my own summer, which has been spent in virtual LIMBO thanks to the family being stuck between homes.
I am happy to say, though, that it will soon be over and we shall be safe and sound in a new home at last. Although it might not be the one we'd bought in May: we're thinking about giving up on this exasperating mold cleanup work, dropping the house, suing the people who'd sold it to us, and buying another house-one that is empty and ready to move into, in fact-and hey, presto. Home problem solved!
:-)
One thing I didn't note before about where we are camped out presently, Chaska, Minnesota: while a swell town over all, it seems to have a nasty habit of violent crimes occuring within it's borders. TWICE during our stay here the town has been hit by shooting incidents, both at trailer home parks.
The first one wound up with one poor guy dead, and the second-just happened last night-wound up with one policeman wounded (thankfully not mortally) and the crazy guy who started the shooting dead from police fire. Some people...I just don't understand them, do you?
Anyway, I hope you and your family are keeping cool today out there in St. Catherines, Ontario.
See ya!

Rich

Comments:Well Karen, since I was able to find an open computer at the library again today, thought I'd drop you another note here at your Dreambook. Heck, I need to talk to a fellow Titanic buff right now, for I just read that a couple plans to get married...at the bow section of the Titanic in a Mir sub! (For *obvious* chick flick-related reasons, if you catch my drift.)
I wish it all had been just a joke or an unture rumor, but yes, two people going on a tourist dive to the wreck shall tie the knot at or near where Samuel Hemming and a fellow sailor peered into the forepeak tank vent at the tip of the bow wondering about all the air hissing out of it just after the ship had brushed the berg on that tragic night(but who remembers THEM in this post-chick flick age? *sigh!*)
Naturally, the organizers of the event, plus the groom, are all defensive towards the (*rightful!*) criticisim being hurled at this recent bit of truly titanic bad taste.
Will Murdoch lamented to a steward as the doom came ever closer to the Titanic on that night 89 years ago "I belive she's gone, Hardy."
Well Mr. Murdoch, I can say to ye that I believe she's lost to decadence now, Will.
NOBODY cares anymore about those who died on the Titanic!!!!
THANK GOD the recent movie "Pearl Harbor" flopped: I would have been more enraged than I was at Titanic mania if the memory of those who died at Pearl (plus the heroes of the attack) had been as eclipsed by shallow cultural trappings like that which have befallen the Titanic, for not only do I care about those who were at Pearl Harbor as much as I do about those who were on the Titanic, I also once knew a Pearl Harbor survivor named Guy Flanangan. In fact, I am a nephew of one of his daughters, and it was thanks to that family link that I met him.
He was aboard none other than the USS Arizona on Dec. 7th, and he was an unsung hero of the attack too!
He was trapped with many other men in a hallway outside a compartment that offered safe refuge from the choking smoke filling it as the Arizona sank, and he finally beat out "SOS" with his wrist while praying earnestly and loud...and someone inside heard and opened the door!
If it wasn't for him, they all probably would have died...
Alas, the makers of the recent film decided that compelling stories like his were not good material for drama, and instead dished up another batch of banal fictional nonsense.
Oh well, their loss.
Happy to relate, an upcoming miniseries named "Band Of Brothers" is the antithethis of "Pearl Harbor" in that it is based on a history book by Stephen Ambrose of the same name and is all about the men of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, and follows them from their days in boot camp to the end of the war.
This company was one of the best outfits the U.S. Army ever fielded, and it fought in Normandy, Holland, Belguim, and took part in the capture of none other a place than Adlof Hitler's Austrian retreat. An easy capture for the German army was kaput and in retreat by May of 1945.
As I told you before, I am a rebel when it comes to telling the stories of history on film, and I am PROUD OF IT too!
:-)
Say, I saw that the weather is getting warmer out east. Is it affecting you all? Ontario may be part of the Great White North, and Minnesota can also be named MinneSNOWta, but the heat of summer still calls in both places.
When it's not awful out, it does make nice beach weather. You ever visit the beach on hot days? I do, for it beats sweltering or being cooped up inside someplace.
Say, I know you're probably terribly busy with work and getting ready to return to Trent, but could you drop me a note here at your Dreambook? I would love to hear from you, for it's been awhile that we chatted last.
Anyhoo, see ya later!

Rich

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say that I miss you very, very much, nay terribly, and look forward to seeing you again after I get back online for good...oops. Looks
like I was a wee bit as mushy as Dill was with Scout. :-)
Right now, I'm sitting at a computer in the Carver County library in Chaska, Minnesota. My family is camped out at a hotel in this town while we work on the problem of what to do about our mold-plagued new home. It sure is hot outside at the moment. Wonder if it gets so hot in your neck of the woods they post heat advisories? :-)
Anyhoo, just wanted to drop you a line, and hope all is well with you.
