Punishment Bill was actually first put together by Kevin Ohmart and me as we rode back from a band competition with the South Salem High School marching band. The inspiration/melody-borrowing came from Monty Python's "I'm a Lumberjack." This is probably more than you wanted to hear about history, so let me just share a few more of the verses that have come about since that fateful busride. Oh, I know an odd fellow, who has a strange name With axe in hand, inflicting pain He whacks off limbs of the inane and his name is Punishment Bill (Chorus) Oh, Punishment Bill, Punishment Bill He'll maim for life, but never kill He trips the blind and the mentally ill and they call him Punishment Bill One night in secret rendezvous Bill found his love had caught the flu so he threw her into the sewage slough (spoken) hence the name, "Punishment Bill" chorus You say you don't believe in miracles, Well, that's a shame but don't scold Bill, he's not to blame Why, he took a blind man, and made him lame and did so with exceptional skill...now everybody sing chorus There are more verses if you're interested. By the way, how on earth did you get a hold of Punishment Bill? I know that in the 80's many friends took the song throughout Oregon, one to Florida, and one friend turned it into a Westpoint marching cadence during his 4 years there. Looking forward to hearing from you if you like. If not, just wanted to say thanks for keeping alive the legacy. As Bill would say, "Chastise is nice." All the best. |
