| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | WELL I HAVE TWO "FAIRWIND 900" OF WHICH THEY BOTH HAVE HAD THERE FAIR SHARE OF TROUBLES FROM THE PAST, ONE I GOT OFF E-BAY AND THE OTHER I BOUGHT FROM A HOBBIE SHOP. THE ONE I GOT OFF E/B WHEN THE PERSON SENT IT THEY JUST PUT IT IN A BOX..AND IT CAME MESTED UP, I TOOK THE DECK OFF AND MADE A NEW ONE FOR IT, THE OTHER ONE SOME ONE TOLD ME I DID NOT PUT ENOUGHT WEIGHT IN IT, SO WHILE TRING TO GET WHAT I DID HAVE-- I BROKE OFF THE KEEL.. SINCE IT WAS MY FIRST BOAT AND IT SAILED RATHER WELL..I COULD NOT JUST DUMP IT. SO ME AND A FRIEND MADE A NEW KEEL THAT I CAN CHANGE IF THE WIND IS BAD..I HAVE A HEAVY ONE THATS AROUND 10 LBS, AND ONE THATS ABOUT 6 LBS. I KNOW THAT I CAN NEVER SAIL THEM IN A RACE. BUT THEY DO RATHER WELL ALL THE SAME. JUST THE WAY THEY ARE. WOULD SELL THEM IF SOME ONE WANTED THEM... |

I am looking forward to the time with my granddaughter as much as she seems to be looking forward to building and sailing the boat. |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I now have 2 Faiwinds, # 72 "Evolution" (picture on the registry) and have just finished # 721 "Blue J"
Both were stock boats that I stripped and converted, the first, Evolution, was my son's, and he lost interest in it so I renovated it, a document on my renovation effort is on this website under "files" (fairwind.doc), the second I bought on ebay and was a bit of a wreck but was given the same treatment as the first. Both boats have interchangeable rigs which can be affected in less than a minute. I haven't figured out which is quickest. Both are now, I believe, very competitve, they beat Victorias regularly in most conditions and hold their own, and sometimes beat, the local 36/600s in a good breeze when the 36's get overpowered and are difficult to control. Unfortunately there are very few Fairwinds in the Phoenix area so I am now building a 36/600 so I can compete with the other locals on a level playing field. |

We also have a Nikko Island Cruiser which we bought for our son at Toys R Us. It keeps getting stuck in the seaweeds! |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I currently own a Fairwind that I purchased about 15 years ago. She was sailed regularly. I eventually purchased an RC Catamaran kit and built it. It became my main boat and the Fairwind eventually became a garage queen. I recently sold the Cat and now have a renewed interest in the Fairwind. I just completely stripped her and repainted her to mimic a production cruising sloop.

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | Cedar Lake Yacht Club is located on Big Cedar Lake in West Bend, Wisconsin. We are a sailing and social club on a 932 acre inland lake in the southeast part of the state about 30 minutes from Milwaukee.
We have five fleets of scows (X, M, MC, C and Optimist) for which we are sanctioned by the Inland Lake Yachting Association (ILYA). Each fleet has scheduled races all season long. We also have a fleet of about 25-30 Fairwinds boats, which we call "F boats". We race every Sunday and Thursday evening from Memorial Day to Labor Day and have done so for about the past 9 years. A typical evening of racing allows 6-10 races depending upon wind, etc. Most of our Fairwinds skippers are also scow sailors or retired scow sailors. As you can imagine, the races get very competitive as racing sailors tend to be aggressive and intense during competition. We also have a judging schedule where skippers take turns setting up the race courses, calling the races and judging the events. Sailors are expected to follow true ILYA rules and regulations. Infractions thereof are penalized with restarts, 180's and 360's. We also have a slate of volunteer scorekeepers that track each sailors race positions, completions and results. At the end of the year, we have a trophy dinner/party where we celebrate the season's winners. |

It is a little rougher than expected and has seen a lot of salt water. A little TLC and some new paint will put it back in shape. the other one was bought off the e-bay......it came mashed/broken...an the other guy would not take it back..the keel an the part of the hull, an the mast were about the only things that came in good shape...took the from the deck main hatch back - cut it all away an refilled the deck area up with wood an glue- the boat will float again soon. plan on giving it away to a new friend, i met an showed how to sail.......it should make a good fun starter boat for some one. i have had many long hours of fun with my boats of witch are many now, been in r/c going on 10 yrs now. am building a 5 footer right now too. there a good past time that lasts for hours of enjoyment....... |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I have three, 1982 vintage, "Tradewinds" boats with home-made "no tangle" r/c (no direct servo) sail winches.
One of them cracked through transversally, allong a symmetrical arc(7in or 18cmm long) exactly behind the reinforcement of the keel rear bolt. The crack occured when the bow inpacted upon an immovable object at medium speed(~60cm/sec, or 2km/h). No wonder, considering the huge inertia of the heavy keel. The hull is made of injection molted high density styrofoam. I am at a loss as to how to glue the crack watertight, especially in the fringes of the crack, where epoxy cannot be applied. Are there any waterproof adhesives that whould seep into the crack and seal it without "melting the styrofoam? |

Thought a RC Yacht would go well. Used to fly RC Gliders and have done some full size sailing and also interested in boat building. Have a Joel White Nutshell Pram Dinghy sitting in my shed that I built. Looked around for a good entry level RC Yacht and came across the Fairwind 900. Really looks a great boat. I have it on order, just awaiting it's arrival. One concern, I live in Melbourne, Australia and there doesn't appear to be many other Fairwinds about downunder. Anyone in the Melbourne area that has a Fairwind please drop me a email. My boat will be called 'Madam Gull' and hopefully sail no: 607. Will build her largely to plan but will incorporate some of the design tips gleaned from this website. Cheers, Paul Thurston Melbourne AUSTRALIA |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I had a Fairwind II given to me about 4 years ago, but it wasn't built and out of my possession until recently, when it was given back to me. I finished construction on it a few weeks ago, and have had in the water once, and planning to go out again this afternoon. I really like the boat, except for the blue jib that came with that model. Though I will race some, my main enjoyment is the scale realism, and I have plans to work a small inboard engine with collapsible prop into it, along with running lights, and possibly a crew (with a dog on the bow). I am also a very big fan of JRR Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books, and have named my fairwind "Sul Melethril", which in the Elvish language means, "wind lover". |

Honestly, a buddy had one and it wasn't that good a sailor (and still isn't) but mine always sailed better than his original one and he's got a new race-ready one that DOES sail well....... |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I just have a Fairwind 900 (my second kit). My first one suffered a severe crack in the hull during a move across state. I've had my second one for a couple of years now. It's painted in a Stars & Stripes theme and is named the United States. I also built one for my brother for his 40th birthday. It is painted a base of bright banana yellow. At the keel it starts with a metallic red and fogs into the yellow as it flows up the hull (it is quite striking on the water). As far as I know, it is unnamed. When we sail at the beach that my brother lives by, we always draw a crowd. |

I named the ship "Grumble-weed" (which was the nickname given to him when he was born by the hospital nurses!) I enjoyed sailing it many times on lakes at Maidstone in Kent as well as Penzance in Cornwall UK.
Having enjoyed this type of sailing so much and wanting to get a larger craft that would cope with slightly stronger sailing conditions Stuart has now bought me a Fairwind 900 which I am about to commence building. However I have heard that there are some variants as regards the recommended ballast weight. 2kg is recommended in the instructions although I have heard alsdo that 2.5 kg would be better ---- ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ADVICE VERY WELCOME BEFORE I COMMITT MYSELF ?? |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | Well I too had a 900 until she sailed off into the lake and ultimately over the horizon never to be seen again. That was 4 years ago.The lake was Biwako the place otsu city ,Japan. The Fairwind is a beautiful looking yacht and looks and sails so well. The reason I lost her, was I think, Low Rx battery power ! BE CAREFUL I used to sail for an hour or more at a time and forgot the health of the batteries/nicads. This is a real issue as you will become totally engrossed in just watching the Yacht cut through the water up and down from all angles. DON'T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOU. Watch those Batteries.
I am going to be buying another 900 in the very near future, can't believe I have waited almost 4 years. Other boats I have are a Kyosho Jetstream with an OS 32 for drive. This boat is a lot of fun especially on a day with a bit of a swell and some small waves it love to get airborne and has flipped a couple of time, Everything is well watertight inside so there's no drama, just dry it off and off she goes again searching for the next wave to launch off. Happy sailing. |

I will be purchasing two boats this coming Spring, most likely Fairwind 900's. I've been considering several models such as the V-32, Soling, and a few others but I keep coming back to the 900. | Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I will purchase my Fairwind 900 in 3 days time, so I cannot give you any register details yet. I live in a smallish city called Bloemfontein in SA, which has an excellent "loch", surrounded by a waterfront complex. The loch has a connecting "island" in the middle with access to water all round it. There is very little sport activity happening on the water, with the occassional jet ski races perhaps twice a year and the odd paddle boat rental place. The weather is perfect all year round for sailing.I haven't sailed yet and know very little about sailing. I have a 5 year old boy, whom I'm sure would like to sail and learn the ropes with his dad. I'm a little apprehensive at this time as I don't know what is expected of me as a rookie captain on a maiden cruise. So, any beginner tips will be appreciated. I have collected and flown a number of kites in all forms in the past 4 years as well as doing the buggy thing with quad kites. I have learnt a little about tacking, which I'm sure is an important sailing pre-
requisite. I'm also excited as a little boy getting his first radio controlled car!!! I will report back once I've had the boat on the water. |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I've had a fairwind "Flying Dog" for about 6 years now, used to race with about 12 to 18 other fairwinds every Sunday but sadly the club fizzled. Im dying to start it up again. I've taken my boat with me everywhere, vacation on lakes in Maine, on big boat trips etc. , even sailed cold buds out to passing canoers which they GLADLY excepted. Last winter I dropped a chunk of wood on her and damn near split her in half.
Through much epoxy, lots of sanding, a new rudder assembly and fairing out the hull, Ive made it back to reinstalling the servos and repainting. I hope to have her back in the water in a few weeks. I have a mini race course in my pool I set up with fishing bobbers that makes due til the weekends in the big pond. Ive had hours and hours of fun and looking forward to many more. |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I've got several different R/C boats. I've got an R/C
tugboat from a Lindberg kit that I'm completing, a Traxxas Blast that's heavily modified (water cooling, bearing motor, and so on), an MRP Fountain superboat (41" long electric), a Traxxas Nitro Vee, a Kyosho Ocean 500 sailboat (cute little boat, really), and a Fairwind 900 that's somewhat customized. The Fairwind is the pride of my fleet, with a hand-laid marine-grade birch plywood deck, the metal rigging kit (which contains a brass ships' wheel, aluminum capstans, and brass turnbuckles), a two-tone blue and white paint job, and a lot of time and toil to make it as close to right as I can. I've had the Fairwind for nearly 6 years, and spent nearly 18 months in on-and-off time working on it. I am rather pleased with the results, but now need to take the time to get to know how well it sails. I've only had it on the water twice, mostly because I'd rather lose a smaller, less expensive boat if something should go wrong. I'll get up the nerve to sail it more, I'm sure...it's just a matter of when. |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I started with a small Cup Yacht from Aristocraft (though I think it was originally made in Australia back when Dennis Connor was wining)... Tiny, but lovely and fast.
Then I got a Fairwind hull at a scratch n' dent sale for $25. five eyars ago. Nothing but the hull, not even the top hatch. I have a very small hobby budget, so I make do. I re-used the radio from the cup yacht, made a clear plexiglass hatch with the servos, etc, glued under it, you could see everything working, and if there was any water inside, but it didn't look pretty in-close to shore. The masts were carbon fiber arrow shafts, the sails, dacron kite cloth. I also found what i later discovered was a Victoria hull, in black, very clean, no other hardware. Same deal, including making a lead keel from tire weights in a mold made in plaster from a foam positive. (lost foam process). I just came upon some spare masts and booms for the stock Fairwind, and am wanting to get it more stock-looking. My biggest need is acopy of the manual as scanned JPEG's or a PDF file, so I can do all the rigging right.... for now, I've been aping the cup yacht's rigging, and it's simple but not very scale looking. My boat, named after the Sinatra song "Summerwind", gets a lot of curious onlookers in the pond at Washington Park, Springfield, Illinois. Every time I go out, a couple wives come over and ask where they can get one for their husbands (this is as big a boat as my wife will let me have;-)). She sails really nice as-is, but I'm thinking about how to rig a 150% genoa on her, just for grins. I am also commodore and chief racing steward of the Washington park Yacht Club, with current membership of ....one... but I got a nice hat, got the scrambled eggsa and everything;-).......... If anybody can send me a copy of the Fairwind manual, I'd appreciate it: MSU1049321@aol.com JPEG, GIF, BMP, or PDF |

high custom mods. They all sail really fine with #7 being the best,(practice makes perfect) I have 2 new kits just delivered and looked at both hulls a couple of days ago.Only thing I can say is they really need to retool or do something with there moulding. The flashing around the deck and hull just keeps getting thicker with each kit. This is getting to thick to just trim off with a knife.Early kits had very little flashing and was real thin.I have overcome this in the last couple boats using a retract blade breakoff razor knife, and bending the blade in a U shape to get rid of the flashing. That works well, but these 2 hulls have flashing over an 8th inch thick.Russell |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | I have two kyosho boats, the fairwind 900 and the seawind.
I received them as gifts from my wife. The Fairwind was built for me by Hobbytown USA in Wilmington, NC. I built the Seawind over the winter. My goal was to have them both look like the pictures on the box. I'm a sucker for decals. I have an electric twin engine power boat, but sailboats are the most fun. I sail at Lake Waccamaw, NC, which can get rough, but any Sunday on the end of our pier with A tall Margarita and a boat in the water is a perfect day. My goal is to build a Fairwinds with racing look and a custom paint job. |

| Tell us about your R/C boats?: | o, i know that theres a lot of people that mite think a
teenager doesnt know much about sailing, but ive been sailing for over 12 years, and racing, including the port huron to mackinac race (any sailor in the great lakes region knows of it), so i know my sailing. ok, anyway. one of the biggest issues in sailing is the weight, right? the lighter it is, the faster it goes. but a light boat isnt good in heavier winds, so how do you get the best of both? heres what i did. i made several different removeable ballasts. im sure im not the first person to do this, but i havent heard anyone talk about it. i made a mold of the inside of the keel with plaster of paris, the made a mold of the mold, thus resulting in a form of the exact size of my keel. i then made several different ballast inserts of different sizes. there are light ones for when there isnt much wind, heavier ones for moderate wind, and then some good sized ones, for when the wind really picks up. they provide great ballast for the boat, and are easy to get out. putting a metal loop in the top before the ballast is completely hard makes sailing in different wind conditions a breeze (no pun intended). well, thats my tip. hope it helps. |
