I live in the South and all we hear is the blacks this and the blacks that. They just think they have a problem - they need to read you books and think about how it would be if they were still back in Africa. Yes slavery was horrible but now all they want to do is sit back and just wait on the government to sent them a check each month for doing nothing. We get calls all the time from orginazatins wanting money for Indians and we have sent some money but we just don't trust those people. I am the founder of the Lakota Oyate Information in (East)Germany. And I am a member of the network for psychological health and srlf-help groups in Saxony. I read, that incidence of suicide among Native American young people, ages 15-24, is nearly three times than of the U.S. national rate. Lakota-therapy-center for psychological health - open letter Dear Mrs. Means, I admire Russell Means already since 1973 for his work for Native Americans. And I would really do my best to support Russell Means and his projects for Lakota. I am working too since 1997 for the freedom of Leonard Pletier. May I ask you why you do not wish that I list Russell Means in association with me? And what do you mean with "your organization"? I am a member of the network for psychological health in Saxonia in East-Germany. Do you mean this network for psychological health? Concerning psychological health: I would like to know, if on the Pine Ridge Reservation does exist a therapy center for Lakota who are at risk of suicide and dependent on alcohol? If such therapy center does not exist, are you (the Lakota) interested that such therapy-center comes into existence - (of course leaded by a Lakota psychotherapist)? What do you think, could we do against the high suicide rate of Native Americans? I would appreciate a honestly reply. |

I am trying to reconnect with my family's ancestory (Comanche/Cherokee) I'm teaching myself and my sons the languages and culture. I recently found my father and his family, in 2001. Though my grandfather passed in 1999 he is guiding me on my journey, I've always had a connection with my people though my stepdad and my mother moved us around (US Navy)due to reassingment. My mother instilled a lot of Her Cherokee values that she could remember being taught, but since her father was in Air Force he didn't stay connected to his Cherokee roots either. I hope you read this. I have read your “Where White Men Fear to Tread,” and it has changed me. I am only a small part blood Seneca, yet my heart is 100% tribal. Growing up, I never understood why I felt differently about litter, animals, Indians. I was born, not raised to believe that Mother Earth was more important, sacred than the god ‘they’ made me pray to. 'They’ never acted liked Jesus, and ‘they’ despise any Jesus-like feelings and behavior-but this is the man ‘they’ worship. When I began to look for my belief system, nothing fit. Every one wants to make rules, yet their rules always put themselves as number one. Until I read your book, I was so lost, powerless. I now realize that my searching for someone else’s right or wrong was infinitely silly. Mother breathed right & wrong into me, many lifetimes ago, and I still carry that. I had been told about my heritage, but very little. My great-great grandfather may have never been registered, but I think he went to Carlisle because of the traumatic childhood has been experienced through the ages. Your book showed me why we have always clung to our heritage, but in a very tenuous fashion, almost ashamed. My great-great grandfather even changed his last name. I have believed in reincarnation for many years, and because of your book I can see that lifetime with more clarity. It truly makes sense that I would have my indigenous ties, without being taught, because I have lived and loved from Turtle Island’s shores. Your book has shown me that and I carry it with me everywhere in my heart. Thank you, thank you. |

great accomplishments in helping the true and first people of this land. Some people think I am crazy, but I do not want him to be emersed into my culture. Currently, my 8th graders have selected a tribe to research and write about; of course, your name has been introduced with other great leaders. Once a leader in this community, a school superintendent at the Wichita Public Schools, sat in a meeting with the Council of the Indian Center, to discuss the education of Native American children in the district,and he made the comment, "America is a melting pot." I sat waiting for some reaction, but there was none. Finally, I said, "That, sir, IS the problem. No one is encouraged to live and celebrate their culture." Needless to say, I am not a favorite daughter in this district. Although, because I am white, I have not been overly welcomed at the Center, I have found some who welcome me and believe the same as I - assimilation was never the right, true answer, nor is it now. I was raised that my ancestors were not to be praised because they had no honorable history in the New World. But- Means has a pumped up opinion of himself, taking credit for much he did not do. First, he did not lead the seige at Wounded knee. Read the history of this and see for yourself. Second,it is my understanding that AIM has broken their relations with Means. But , again check to be sure. And has anyone ever asked why Means sells everything thru his school.Has anyone ever visited the school ? I had a good laugh when i read where someone is taking a collection to pay the Mean's way to North Carolina for the Mohican Reunion.Saying the Mean's would not charge for their appearance but would have wares to sell..Get real. This is the type stuff that has ruined Mean's credibility . He also failed to file for running of the govenorship of New Mexico ontime, then sued the state. Lost that suit. Then tried to run for president of the Lakotas in South Dakota. Lost that big time. See, you cannot be a full time resident of two states at once...Russell--you are a smart man and you have done much good. There is much you can still do. But you need to get it to gether. | Comments: | I have been in need of information to help someome in my country. For no apparent reason Russell appeared in my searh window. I never typed it nor heard of this site before. And yet not matter how many times I searched for something else, it returned, not allowing me to view anything else. So I viewed this site, and much to my suprise, it holds lots of information that I can use help other people understand my friends quest.
