| Comments: | Was in Port Moresby in 1960/61. Have never forgeten it. It was like something out of "Tales of the South Pacific". There were plenty of "Lotus Eaters" there and memorable people.
I played Rugby League for the Kone Tigers and our coach was Ian Skinner, then very high up in the Administration and was a decorated Coast Watcher from WW2. John Kaputin(or should I say Sir John kaputin) played in our team. Wonderful and unforgetable years. |

Ever notice sometimes how newspapers and movies get it wrong when part of an article or movie centres on a place we know in PNG? - my first experience of one such thing was while watching a mar movie, and part was about NADZAB Airfield, being high up in the HILLS, with heaps of JUNGLE! Well all the people in Lae Theatre (1968) burst out laughing! Now we have a Courier-Mail article with a sketch of "Kukukuku" at "Goroko" where the town is mis-spelt, and the people are definitely NOT Kukukuku or even Goilala. Raises a smile from those who knew. |

Also a Big HI! to Gil Harvey-Hall, whom I have met a few times while attending RSL re-unions on ANZAC days after the march in BRISBANE. I live in Inala (sub. of Brisbane)these days. Geez, I am 60 now, Gil, did you have to remind me? Feel like 40 though... dtr put me on natural organic supplements which make me feel so fit again, and lose weight. She signs up new agents who are interested in their own health for $70 plus any orders. My 1st. son Alex Jackway was born in Madang. His mum was from Kerema district. Thanks to dr. Sing Bing is the eldest followed by Sing Wah, Sing Fook and Sing Chee. Sing Bing and Sing Chee later went to the Scots College in Warwick and Sing Wah and Sing Fook to the Brisbane Boys College (BBC) in Brisbane. | Comments: | Mate - fantastic site and so many memories; took me half an hour to remember that I was still not back there ... we went into Lae after the war - November 1946 and lived in a shack out at the Lutheran Mission site past Chinatown; went to the Catholic Mission school in Lae - Sister Antonia, Sister Theodorus, Father (Bishop) Leo and his tiger moth, Mr Howard and his cubs/scouts - a thousand wonderful and fulfilling memories .. all thos friends from Chinatown and Malaytown that I am still running into 60yrs later.
Joined the PNGVR while in Lae (no choice - brother Bob was A Coys OC!) following the tradition of all my other older brothers and still in the association which is superb Could rattle on for hours - basketball, rugby, judo and so on until we where kicked out by the Australian government of the early 70's! | Comments: | The Rabaul Yang Ching / Sacred Heart School Reunion was held back on 30th June this year and so far no one has said anything on this site what the event was like. Come on, all you wantoks from Rabaul. Use this great site more often and keep in touch and keep everyone up to date with the latest news and gossips. I especially like the commemorative SHS Reunmion Magazine edited by Sylvia which has a lot of vintage and recent pictures of Rabaul. There are also many interesting experiences of old students one in particular from Sir Julius Chan who wrote about the early days at SHS, "They were very tough times and I can still remember Sister Michael who used to carry a rubber whip. She was very tough and I did cop a few from that rubber whip". Well, knowing Julius who likes the limelight and the centre of attention, he probably made a nuicance of himself in class and deserved the corporal punishemtn handed out by Sister Michael. It was a pity I wasn't there when Julius was being whacked by Sister Michael as I was probably down at Dowlands College in Australia. If I was, I would have urged the Sister to give Julius more with the rubber whip and hit harder. |

Went to Bulae 70/80's with my brother, Richard (who never left and is flying for Air Niugini). Looking for other Bulae Babies, especially Lili Petrou, and De La Cruz. Just hoping that they are well and thinking as fondly of PNG as I am. Have contact (through parents) with the Coplands (Jason and Linda), Porteous family (Michael and James). I guess the research is true about Third Culture Kids, we never really leave where were brought up. I left Moresby at the end of Year 4. As you may know my father went missing whilst sailing at the local club on the 22 August 1971 when I was 7. We found his boat and a life jacket with "bad pain in chest" written on it. We never recovered his body. I have been trying to locate any newspaper stories that may have been printed at the time. I went up to Lae in 1959, as a baby, my Dad (Bill) was with the 39th Battalion during the War, then he went back with the PNGVR & PIR in Moresby and Lae, we came south briefly when I was 5 then we went back to Lae. Mum and Dad worked for Carpenters ( New Guinea Co.) then when I was 7 we moved to Goroka where Dad managed New Guinea Co and Mum (Pat) managed both the store and him :-) We were in Goroka for 13 years until we came 'finis' in 1977. Dad didn't take too well to being 'south' and went back to manage Carpenters in Mt Hagen then Madang for 12 months, he never really settled back in australia and his heart was always in PNG,he never stopped talking about the country, often saying it was the best years of his life, he would often accost anyone who looked remotely PNG at the shopping centre and start talking Pidgin to them, much to the dismay of my kids! Dad passed away on the 1st of Dec last year and at the end of August this year, I am going back to take his ashes to either Kokoda or Ishuarva to spread them, and hoopefully make a trip back to Goroka as well while we are up there, I am taking my 19 year old son with me, to show him the beautiful country that I grew up in. |

| Comments: | I've just come across your website by accident and WOW! I lived in PNG from April 1960 to April 1990. I was with the Burns Philp Automotive Division all this time (it became Ela Motors in 1969). I was in Port Moresby from 1960-1968, Madang 1968-69, Lae 1969-73, Kieta 1973-1974, Wewak 1974-79, Mount Hagen 1979-83, Lae 1983-87, Port Moresby 1987-1990 then "went finish" to live in Modanville just 14km north of Lismore in northern NSW.
In February 1993 I was recalled by Ela Motors to do consultancy work for them in their branches spread out through the Pacific Islands. I visited PNG seven times, Honiara three times, Fiji nine times, Western Samoa, Tonga and American Samoa once each in the ten years between 1993 and 2003. I met my wife Penny in Port Moresby in July 1966, She had arrived up from Sydney to work for the Department of the Administrator. We got married in the Catholic Church at Ela Beach in Port Moresby in November 1967. Our one and only daughter Ursula, was born in the Wewak General Hospital on Saturday morning 4th October 1975-just 18 days after PNG got its Independence so my daughter and PNG are the same "age". While in Wewak I did a lot of research on the wartime history of PNG and in particular the lead up to and the actual surrender of the Japanese in September 1945. I was also a Super-8 movie camera enthusiast and I recorded on movie film many items to do with PNG including the visit by Queen Elizabeth II to Kieta on Bougainville in February 1974 and Wewak's Independence celebrations on the 15th & 16th September 1975 which included the visit to Wewak of HRH Prince Charles on the 17th and 18th September 1975. The years I spent in PNG were the most rewarding and wonderful years of my life. I still keep in touch with friends up in PNG but it is very sad to see how the country is going backwards so fast these days. |

Far too many fantastic memories to share but highlights would be .... Rabaul and Goroka swimming clubs, Climbing and helping test the volcanoe activity, exploring and collecting WW2 stuff, outrigger canoes, ice cold lemon squash from any of the RSLs and peanuts in bunches!
Isn't it amazing how what comes out time and time again in peoples comments are that it is a country like no other and that 'it' never really leaves you - no matter how old or what your reasons for being there were! I feel very privilged to have had such a childhood. |

| Comments: | What a wonderful site you have Rob. My parents went to live in Papua New Guinea in 1960 and we left in 1977. We, my 2 brothers Peter and Barry began our New Guinea days in Rabaul, lived out on plantations for the first 5 years, my older brother Peter went to Rabaul High School in 1961-1963, I went to Lae High School which was opposite the primary school where my younger brother went he was in grades 2 and 3 in 1966 1967 then to Madang High School, before that I went to Boarding School in Herberston out of Cairns to St Mary's Church of England, my younger brother Barry as I said went to the Primary school opposite the High School in 1966/67 then went to Madang Primary was in grades 3and 4 then we moved to Port Moresby and he went to Boroko East Primary and was in grades 5 and 6 before he went to Boarding School at All Souls Ravenshoe out of Cairns. My Mother worked in Steamships in Madang 1968/69 and she also worked in BP's in Port Moresby in 1970/77, Mum used to also work in the milkbar where the picture theatre was in the heart of Lae (where all the shops were)it belonged to the Powell family. I worked in the Archives in Port Moresby for about 3years (under the museume) next door to the house of Assembly, then did Child minding until we left in 1977. My parents names were Muriel and George La Cerf and my brothers are Peter and Barry La Cerf. My elder brother's daughter was born in Lae and my nephew David Doyle lived and went to School at Finchhaven in 1971-1974

My Aunt, Deirdre Maclean Mclellan and Grandfather Frederick John Maclean lived Port Moresby, Daru and Madang in the 1940-1950 era. My brother Ross Maclean and family lived in Moresby and Lae. Found this site on a nostalgia trip. Hello to every one who remembers the good days of PNG.

Fathers name was Colin Stewart and he worked for P.N.T. Mothers name was Jean and she used to do child minding at home. Went to Boroko East Primary school when it first opened. My brothers names are Graham, Brian & Phillip. We moved to Lae in about 1965 and lived in Gurney Street, Bulae. I left Lae in 1972. Would love to make contact with any one that may remember us. |

Was just surfing the net when I found your website and saw that we attended the same school in Popondetta.I finished grade 6 at Bambusi St in 1966 and did my secondary schooling at Nudgee College in Brisbane. I have wonderful memories of growing up in Popondetta. Running wild with my best mate Peter Mayoh whose parents ran Bisi plantation out Sangara way. When I attended Bambusi St Mrs Lancaster was the principal and I still have a chuckle about how we ran her ragged at the little 3 classroom school. Chris |

| Comments: | I lived in PNG from 1972-1975 and again from 1977-1982. Most of my time was spent in Lae but I had 2 fabulous years in Goroka (1980-1982) and about a year in Madang as well as brief stints in Rabaul (too brief) and Wewak.
Interested to know if anyone has heard from Bill McKibben, who used be a surveyor (last heard of living in Kimbe) and Alan Jamieson, who used to be with Blackwood Hodge. I would also be greatful for any news of Bob Balenzuela (Goroka). Cheers |

Daumagini,near Kwikila in the Rigo District.My last period in PNG was spent as instuctor at Boroko Post & Telegraphs Training College.I would love to hear from anyone who attended the 7th E Course... they are very hard to find!! | Comments: | Hi all. I used to live in Boroko, Port Moresby, as a child in the 60's. Frequentley there would be a truck driving around the area spraying a thick white fog for controling mosquitos, which I took great delight in running around in.
Does anyone know, or tell me where to find out what the chemical in this fog was? I would very much appreciate any info anyone could give me. Many Thanks. Bob Copley |
