Comments:I found this site looking for info regarding Bloodsworth Island. I have Bloodsworth ancestors from Dorcester, MD, and would love to know if anyone can tell me where to find the history of the early island inhabitants. I have heard of a book called "The Disappearing Islands of the Chesapeake" by William Cronin, published by John Hopkins University press. I just found out about the book today from someone who contacted me through Ancestry.com. He, too, is a Bloodsworth descendent. I ordered it, and hope it has some historical information. Any info about the Bloodworths and/or the island would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Comments:Recently bought my first house in Cambridge! (still a shore native, born & raised in Talbot). I have a small photo album during/after civil war era. One carte de visite is of THOMAS HOLLIDAY HICKS & appears to have been signed by him (as compared w/ documents at the court house). I'm looking for photos of his family to compare / identify the other photos in the album. Curious note: one photo is of a little person (dwarf, to be direct) wearing what appears to be a civil war uniform. Any Dorc.Co historian have an idea who he might be?

Comments:I am interested in finding information about Anthony HOLLAND who was born in Virginia in 1641. He was taken to Anne Arundel County, Va by William Burgess who had brought a number of Quakers from Virginia. HOLLAND may have been a worker on one of Holland's ships. In Maryland, he had 3 children by his first wife (name unknown): Benjamin, b c. 1677, Elizabeth and John. By his second wife Isabella PARSONS, he had 8 children, Thomas, Richard, Jacob, Capell, Susannah, Mary, Abraham and Sarah. I am interested in more information about the HOLLANDs of Virginia including Anthony HOLLAND.

He returned to Englnd sometime thereafter and made another trip, this time to Dorchester County, MD where he permanently settled circa 1662 near Taylor's Island. His place was called "Anthony's Fortune" which consisted of roughly 50 acres of tobacco. I have a copy of the original charter granted to him by Charles Calvert. Anthony died in 1678.

Comments:Mine is a genealogy question. My Great grand-father, Josiah Mitchell was born in Maryland around 1837 but the only other connection I have found is his father Cyrus - a Cyrus Mitchell married Betsy Richardson in Dorchester County in 1793. I hope the two are connected but is there, by any chance, any Mitchell family from Dorchester being researched by anyone? Can anyone recommend a good genealogy researcher who might be able to assist? Maryland looks a wonderful place to visit - if I ever get any firm evidence of ancestry I'll make a visit to the state.

Comments:I too am seeking ancestors for William TURPIN, b. 1650 (I have for his birth location: "at sea, on way from France") who m. Margaret IVERY. Here is some history that might help someone: from book, “Turpin of Maryland”, by Mrs. Mary Turpin Layton, Tacoma Park, MD.: “William Turpin, the progenitor of the Turpin family of Maryland, was transported into Maryland by Captain Luke Gardiner of St. Mary’s County, Maryland, in 1661. The same year Luke Gardiner transferred these rights to James Lindsey, who claimed the rights of the 50 A. of land which was given by Lord Baltimore for each settler transported into the Province to inhabit. William Turpin remained on the Western Shore of Maryland for several years, as in 1664 we find Luke Gardiner and William Turpine as witness to a deed in St. Mary’s County. This is the only record we find of his signature and shows that he wrote his own name, spelling it ‘William Turpine’. On all other records, recorded by others, his name is spelled ‘Turpin’. He later settled in Somerset County, Maryland, where he was married by Mr. John Winder, January 16, 1668, to Margaret Ivory, born July 7, 1654, in Hungers Parish, Northampton County, Virginia.”

Comments:Dear Dorchester County, MD Historical Society: I am trying to see about a potential program to compare and contrast current Escape and Evade tactics of the US Military with those of the slaves and conductors on the Underground Railroad. I do volunteer work with the Friends of Oakley Cabin and the Underground Railroad in Montgomery County, Maryland. We are about fifteen miles, NNW of Washington, DC. On July 8 there will be "Montgomery County History Day" and November 4 will be the "Maryland State Emancipation Day" programs. Also, on this date will be the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Underground Railroad/Quaker Legacy Trail that will run from Oakley Cabin in Brookeville, MD to Norwood, MD. I am trying to be given the contact information of a person in the Washington, DC/Baltimore, MD/Maryland Eastern Shore area whose related to Harriet Tubman or could tell us about her use of escape and evade tactics before and during the Civil War. I would like to have this person that may know about Escape and Evade tactics who would be able to come out to one or more programs at Oakley Cabin and/or Woodlawn Manor. Another person, versed in the Escape and Evade tactics of the US Military would then be able to give a comparison talk. My contact information: 202-501-5395, ext. 376 work 301-869-1306 home hugh.clayton@nara.gov Thanks. Sincerely, Hugh

Comments:Hi there. I'm interested in purchasing the Tombstone Records book for Dorchester County if it is still available. Also as Jim Bloodsworth commented below, I've been interested in the history of Bloodsworth Island and Hollands Island and the original inhabitants. If you have any information or can direct to where I can find information on this subject I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
