It's been a long, tough road with some really hard days but I know that despite all the problems my 'strike' has caused, I am still pretty lucky. | Comments: | Here’s some info you might want to add to your site about being struck by lightning. I was in my car and the vehicle was struck but I was uninjured. Other than the smell of singed hair, I suffered no other ill effects. I also can not bend metal with my mind… haha My insurance provider is trying to tell me the damages shown in the photos is rock chip damage. Anyway, here are some good close photos of physical damage done to my 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII. The incident happened July 2004. I’ve looked all over the place for images of lightning damage to vehicles and haven’t found any so I posted my own. | Comments: | I too have been struck by lightning, and survived. At age 12 (I'm 17 now) on August 6th, 1998 at Rock Hill Boy Scout Camp PA, myself and three friends were caught in a terrible storm. The camp having only a few REAL buildings that would provide 4 walled protection from the elements decided to race up the hill to the Trading Post *general store*. The storm was like nothing I've ever seen before. It felt like being caught in a hurricane, which I had only experienced once in Floridia. The wind was blowing about 100 miles an hour. The lake had virtual water spouts coming out of it, something I had never seen on a lake. The entire camp activities for the day were cancelled, and the everyone was ordered to stay at their campsites. The problem was that this storm had come w/o warning. We were at the bottom of the hill at the lake, and our campsite was a mile up the road. The word "pouring" cannot describe what the rain was doing. It was as if Heaven opened up a bottomless ziploc bag of water, and let it drop on the ground below. We made our way past the dining hall and up the winding road to the trading post. Thunder louder then I have ever heard cracked over head. It was then we began seeing the lightning. I had been told two myths conerncing lightning: 1. You never see lightning bolts unless you are near enough the storm to get hit. Instead you will see a bright yellow flash of color hundreds of miles away. 2. Count in mississippi seconds from the lightning flash to the thunder crack. For every second you count, add 10 miles and that is the location of the lightning. Well I was seeing detailed bolts of lightning, and I was freaking out. Counting, the lightning/thundercrack was about a half of a second which scared us even more. I remember seeing a bolt of lightning hit right in front of the trading post. It hit the dirt which stirred up a plume of dust. It worked as a cosmic distraction to keep us from our goal. Regaining concentration, I knew we needed to get inside. I looked at the trading post, a shoddiliy built little shack with boards and nails sticking out all over. No doubt built by some of the older scouts themselves on some nameless year. It didn't look much like salvation, but what the hell. Looking at this structure I remember thinking "Oh good, it's made of wood which doesn't conduct electricity" It was hours later that I thought why are so many trees hit by lightning, when the earth is 2/3 water... Making it inside the trading post, we looked around at others. My party was me (Josh), Brian, Jimmy, Billy. The guy who ran the trading post was around 16 he nicknamed himself Tree Frog, and his buddy Pete were the only ones working. I vaugely remember a little spanish kid who had sought shelter in the trading post too. "Yo you gonna buy something?" came Tree Frog's request. "We almost got hit by lightning dude we're scared" something similiar to that came our reply. I don't know who said what, it all happened so fast. Tree Frog dismissed the claims of how we were almost hit by lightning... The Trading post door, a metal frame thin piece of nothing had blown open in the fierce winds. The window was also open. I don't know how any of what happened next is possible, because replaying the situation it doesn't make sense unless lightning really does strike twice, or wood conducts electricity... I slammed the door shut, reaching into the storm. Part of me knew what was going to happen, and I jerked my hand back as the door shut. Too late. Lightning had struck the powerlines, yet also the metal door. I felt a tingling sensation in my right arm, which I had begun pulling away. As I managed to pull the arm free of the current, I lost my footing. What followed next really scared me. It wasn't until I hit the ground that I felt the pain. A burning, then numbing sensation. As I sat upright, I saw a blue glare. I blinked but it stayed. I wasn't blinded, I could see fine, yet a bluish glare stayed with me for at least 10 minutes. Witnesses there later told me that they could see electricity crackling in and around my eyes. I refuse to believe this, but some part of me thinks it too be true. I did see the lightning going from my fingertips to the door... Instinctivly, I turned to see if everyone else was ok. Thats the kind of person I am, I can be dying and will still check on others. My friend Brian lay prone on the floor. He was convulsing violently. He been standing by the window. I think either a second bolt hit him, or it travelled into the nails in the window. Tree Frog was standing over Brian shouting commands for him to wake up and asking if he was ok. Frog now had a bandage on his left hand. He had received a shock from the phone on the desk. Everyone else was fine. After a scary five minutes, Brian stood up like nothing had happened. He had not gone into Cardiac arrest, like we feared, he was shaking out of fear and trying to ease his burning pain. Now that everyone else was ok, I surveyed my own injuries. My vision had returned to normal. I had burns on my fingertips, right arm, and my shoes which had melted in some parts. I went to the bathroom mirror, and recieved a horrifying shock. My eye color had changed. My eyes are very green. My parents and friends can only describe the color as GREEN!! it's a mix of bright and dark and it changes between the two. Now, I have a bright blue band that runs along the outside of my pupils in both eyes. The green color is still there, just with the blue around it. (It really sucks cause it looks just like the outline of my contacts, which when I lose one think are still in.) They took us to the camp medical center and no further investigation was needed. My parents upset me, cause when they picked me up at the end of the week and were informed about the incident, my mother refused to believe that I was hit, and my father said "Well you weren't directly hit so you are ok". Since then I've found countless survivor stories to show him that he was wrong. My long term effects are: A high threshold for pain, which is a gift and a blessing. I received shots in the face for acme medicine, and the doctor yelled at me for not wincing. I do not feel most pain, except internal (back, stomache, headache) extreme pain goes away almost instantly but it takes its toll on me first. *I broke my wrist when I was 14. I felt the pain from that, then something happens where I flood with adrenaline, and anger the pain feels like heat, my body temp escalates, and I'm left with no pain just anger/heat/adrenaline. I don't get cold, unless I am wet. In 10 degree weather I can walk around in shorts and will not shiver. I get hot VERY easily. In 45 degrees in will sweat. In 80, I need to pour water over my head continuously. I will get symptoms where I periodically shake. I have an awareness of when a storm is coming. I cannot keep my fingers steady. Ever... Brian who I haven't seen in years did not end up with any of these, his burns went away and he was fine... ~Trunks |

Once again rounded up my two small boys and made the 3min. drive to a friend's house with a basement ,in only a min. flat! Mad dash down the stairs, all the while the storm sirens and my 7yr old screaming all around us.Threw blankets and pillows and mattresses over everyone, and a small, thin voice next to me asks " mommy? the lightning cant get you in HERE can it?? " He witnessed me being struck in 99 and still worries about that! Evev took them to therapy 4 awhile! They were 5and 3 at the time and still say one min. I was there, the next min. I was flying through the air! Will write my whole story soon, they are predicting same weather for tomorrow, so when all the sirens calm down around here...i'll have time! | Comments: | I am a Electrocution Survivor. Was Electrocuted on a Construction Site (12.5KV) in 1984 and received burns over 32% of my Body ranging from deep 2nd to 4th(hand). Spent a month in the Burn unit and approx. 18 months recovering from various injuries. Should not have survived the initial shock and had complications in Hospital that almost killed me. I was in Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, Calif. and the staff was just Awesome. I owe a lot to them and I was fortunate to have a World Renown Plastic Surgeon do my Skin Graphs. I also did Volunteer Counseling for approx. 2 years at same Burn Unit until I moved out of the area. Although I have some residule effects to my injuries I really can't complain as I'm still alive and kickin'.. To me it was not a Negative experience but a Positive one by far. | Comments: | Hi Larry, I am very impressed with this website! I am 38 and was struck by lightning May 1999. It has, and continues to be a long road toward recovery...however, I have found comfort in friends from a support group over the internet. I now know that I am not alone in all that I have and continue to experience. The lightning has caused much turmoil in my life, many medical problems, including amnesia (I have lost 35 years of my past). I am grateful to people such as yourself who are sharing and educating others of the effects of lightning, and re-assuring those of us who have been struck that we are not alone. | Comments: | Hello..just a quick note to let you know that my 14 yr old daughter was struck by lightning on May 21, 2001 while we were on a family camping trip. While sleeping in the tent, lightning hit a pine tree, followed the root system and came up through the floor of the tent right where she was laying. It entered her left shoulder and exited her right ankle. To make matters more complicated, healthwise, Taylor had already had over 30 surgeries and had kidney failure. Today, she is on the National Waiting List for a kidney transplant and on dialysis 3x per week. We have a terrible time trying to figure out if some of her symptoms are from the strike, rather than the other illness. We have been fortunate, somewhat, with our doctors who she has had since birth. They have been pretty good at NOT dismissing the strike as a possible cause for some "not-so-typical" kidney failure symptoms. Mainly they just say "We don't know" Taylor thinks her strangest phenomena/symptom is a heightened awareness/intuition...this is a longer story though...you're site is great!! |

And it is for sure that Dr's downplay our physical complaints and don't know much about lightning survovors. I have trained 2 our of 3 of my Dr's and they are believers now. | Comments: | Quite a wonderful site, Larry. I used to be a moderator for the lightning strike group you mentioned and was very active for a couple of years. I have since fallen away from the group, although still keep in touch with a few of the members. I hope that many of them will take the time to contribute their stories. Perhaps I will, as well. In short, I was hit through a telephone via the left ear and had bleeding exit burns between the eyes, out the forehead and out the crown. All in all I'm lucky to be able to hit the bowl when I pour milk on my cheerios. Will check in again. I will need more time to explore your site. From all of us, thanks for what you're doing.
