Teeter and I am an artistic director with a small theatre company in Rochester, NY. As part of a festival on gay/queer themes I am trying to collect real-life stories from the public on the topic of SPIRIT (also known as the color VIOLET on the rainbow flag.) Below is a press release on the project, giving more indepth information, please consider participating and passing on this press release to any newsletter or group e-mail list that u might have. Teeter Artistic Director Lambda Project tackles Two-Spirits for Upcoming Rainbow Theater Festival In 1978, Gilbert Baker, a San Francisco artist designed the Rainbow Flag so that the gay community could have a symbol. This original flag had eight stripes each representing a different facet of gay life. Pink (sexuality), red (life), orange (healing), yellow (sun), green (nature), turquoise (art), indigo (harmony) and violet (spirit) were part of the flag design. When the flag was later mass produced pink and turquoise were dropped and indigo was changed to blue due to production constraints. Using the original color scheme as inspiration, The Lambda Project as part of the Rainbow Theater Festival searches far and wide to collect stories from the general public on one of the eight rainbow colors coinciding with the theme of that year's festival. The Rainbow Theater Festival for 2005 is a series of performances that will be dedicated to queer Spirit inspired by the rainbow flag color, violet. Spirit as it is currently defined in the American Heritage Dictionary has fourteen different meanings that vary significantly in their interpretation. Spirit could refer to the soul, pride, or even alcoholic beverages. "This will make for a very compelling event," said J.R. Teeter the author of The Lambda Project and Artistic Director of Bread & Water Theatre. "In researching the use of spirit in gay life I came across the term 'two-spirit' which comes from Native American culture. It is how they describe homosexuality, bi-sexuality and transgenderism in their world. Two-Spirits were revered by their tribes, held sacred positions, and allowed to participate in both traditional male and female roles. The general term of two-spirit comes from the idea that a child could be born with both a man's and a woman's spirit." This year's project is tentatively titled Ode to Two-Spirits. The Bread & Water Theatre is asking for queer and queer-friendly people to submit their stories of Spirit for this year's project. Their real life stories will be used to create a performance piece to be performed at 2005's Rainbow Theater Festival. Below is a complete definition of spirit as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary. Founded in 2000, The Bread and Water Theatre, under the artistic direction of J.R. | Comments: | yoz just my two cents' worth after reading all the entries in your journal. i think it will be stupid/fruitless to say that to move on because it's quite apparent that that's what everyone has been telling you to do... in a way there is never a moving on till we close the chapter and really not look back anymore. but what i really want to say is that there's nothing wrong with loving someone. look upon this experience in a positive light, at least you know what loving is even though it hurt like hell, feel as if a thousand and one needles piercing through you at the same time or someone pulling these needles out in one yank... but more importantly i think you need to get back some self-esteem... alot of thing in life are there to demoralise us but they are also the experiences that will strengthen us if we only allow them too. if we survive through the deepest shit, then it's real survival otherwise it's just some blooney rubbish and we kill ourselves for no good reasons... i had a friend that killed me once figuratively speaking, sad to say we are no longer friends... but i cannot let go because we din have a talk to resolve matters... the book is still left open, the chapter still waiting for a resolution. i don't know if it will ever come... at least you were able to write a letter to Amos... me? i can't even start ok... a lot of people won't understand because they don't know what kind of pain this is really... not that i'm saying that i understand your pain, or maybe i do... but i guess we all have our own way of grieving... but pick ourselves up we must because there is no other way... don't let one person have the ability to kill whatever good in you. right now the way i look at it... you are really in this totally negative self-image thing. you try to hide... boy i think you try to hide almost too hard...i admire your courage in telling your friends about your sexuality, i even appreciate the fact that you can tell it to me. hiding is a chore... but we have no choice sometimes right? :) i won't claim to be the resident expert... but sometimes... it's not easy to expose ourselves to the possible dangers of being hurt again. we don't dare to take risks anymore. But hold on to the belief that there will be one who will cherish you and your love and you in turn will cherish him/her and love him/her. i don't want to marginalise/trivialised your feelings for Amos. there is nothing wrong with loving. keep that in mind. the only wrong, sometimes, is that we love too strong and too hard. :) and then we go crashing on the hard rock and all and we kill ourselves with a fatal head injury... and bleeding heart and what other you can think of...you must LOVE YOURSELF first before OTHERS CAN LOVE YOU BACK! smile, life's like this. face it with a smile and your days will be better... |
