Comments:Interesting and informative site!

My ancestor Archibald Askin White (1828-1906) lies buried at the Santa Anna Cemetery. I post this note here in the hope that perhaps some White relative may eventually find it. Can anyone tell me why A.A. White left Farmer's Branch, Dallas County, Texas, for Coleman County about 1902? Was family there also?

Thanks!

Name: Jerry Coffee
E-mail address: j.coff@verizon.net
Comments:I have done historical and ancestrial research in the central Texas area and Santa Anna Mountain plays a role. Wallace Coffee, Chairman of the Comanche Nation made an attempt to make Santa Anna Mountian and the surounding prairie a National Sacred Comache Buffalo Grassland. Wallace Coffee is not related to my family. Apparently he took the name of Holland Coffee, the famous 18th Century Red River trader who first established a trading house near what later became Fort Cobb and what became the Comanche Reservation in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Due to lack of military protection on the frontier prior to 1840, Holland Coffee moved his trading activities back to the Red River near Sherman Texas in 1836. He was killed in a duel in 1846 and the trading house at Preston texas was operated by his wife, Sophia (Suttenfield) Coffee until the 1870s.

In 1879, my great grandparents, Joshua D. and Mary Lou (Blanton) Coffee moved from Fannin County Texas and settled on what became the Brown - Coleman County line. Joshua was a teamster from the time he arrived in Texas in 1855. He drove freight wagons from Brownwood to San Angelo and to the Door Key Ranch, about 20 miles southeast of the city until 1888 when the Santa Fe Railrod came through that area and arrived in San Angelo. The Brownwood - San Angelo Wagon Road passed through Brookesmith, Trickham, Rich Coffey's Flat Top Ranch and followed the Concho River to San Angelo. It took two full days to make the trip from Brownwood to San Angelo. The overnight stop was at a swing station established at Rich Coffey's Flat Top Ranch . on. My great grandmother Mary lou, was killed on his runaway freight wagon in 1884. Joshua Coffee and his immediate family are buried in the MukeWater Cemetery near Bangs Texas. During the War Between the States, Joshua Coffee served as a teamster with Lt. Col Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry Battalion - Arizona Brigade in Fannin County Texas. The 1st Texas Cavalry Battalion - Ariozona Brigade never set foot in the New Mexico - Arizona Territory. Joshua Coffee was among 25 pickets during the harsh winter of 1863-64 at Colbert's Ferry, north of Sherman Texas. He returned to Fort Warren in Fannin County in may 1864 and was reassigned to the Brush Battalio at Oxford Lake in Collin County. The Brush Battalion bivouac site is now located in the north end of Lake Lavon.

I plan on coming to Texas again this summer and going to Santa Anna is a part of the trip. My aunt also used to own the Pony Express home up against the hill. I was through there 2 years ago and the home (the Turner place)was for sale. We never heard back from the Realtor or the person we contacted to see about maintaining the structural integrity of the place. I still would like to know if it has been sold and if its been saved. I love that old town and hope its prosperous!

Comments:I have had the privilege of visiting your wonderful town twice. I came with my friend Dessa Rushing Mainor to her class reunion back in 2005 I believe it was and then again in April of 07. I have to tell you that you have such a remarkable place to visit and a town filled with such inviting people. We put the top down on Dessa's car and rode all around your area and she told me all of the stories of her childhood and as we passed the school and her home place I cold just see all of the tings she was telling me in my head. Dessa told me about her and her sister playing at the tank and all of the tings they would do for fun. It was a few days before I realized that a tank was what we in south Ga. call a pond. I was a little confused at first but we still have a good laugh about that. Hope to make the bison cook off sometime and no I didn't know what that was either!! You have done so much to bring your town back to life and from an outsider looking in you are a breath of fresh air. I may have Georgia in my heart but Texas is always on my mind. Can't wait to visit again and know that you have something special in your little town and you should be proud of it.

My father was from a farm between Valera and Talpa and my mother had lived in Santa Anna with her mother and step father Roy and Thelma Phillips and younger 1/2 brother, Lee Roy Phillips. My maternal grandparents (W.C. and Ophelia Johnson McGrew)operated a cafe there during the 30's until the death of my great grandmother. During World War II, my grandmother operated a beauty shop in Santa Anna and my step grandfather farmed between Santa Anna and Trickham. My mother went to Santa Anna High School one or two years I believe.

My grandparents relocated to the Santa Anna area between there and Trickham from Ector County during World War II, but returned to Ector County around 1948 after the birth of my sister. My step grandfather is buried in the Cleveland Cemetery in a family plot.

Great site.

I was born and raised there, some memories can never be replaced and that is the way it seems Santa Anna is. Wish I could have spend more time there visiting but our present lives call us away. I visited the old drug store where I worked while in high school, of course it is a furniture store now, remember Doc Barkley? The bluebonnetts were beautiful, have not seen them in years and I soaked it all up until the next time that I can visit my home town and the great state of Texas. Thanks for the memories and I will keep check on the site, it is great.

Comments:Several months ago while net-surfing and exploring writings in and about Coleman County I came across the site below:

http://www.texasescapes.com/TOWNS/Santa_Anna/santa_anna.htm

I wrote an article about the rock carvings I had seen on the west mountain as a boy and which I supposed had been lost due to the later excavation of the mountain.
When they published the letter, I contacted an old friend about it and he in turn related it to yet another old friend. The story then came back to me giving me the URL for this site.
Lo and behold, I find that one of the carvings was saved! Reading further on this site, I find that many old acquaintances have visited and signed in.
I too am pleased to find this site and will I’m sure spend many pleasant hours exploring and reading the comments of all and, answering some of them!
By the way, I was born in the Sealy Hospital in 1933 and Dr. Sealy’s name is on my birth certificate. One of five children to George and Bessie England.

My Very Best Wishes to All who read this,

Comments:Over the past year I had been remeniscing about Santa Anna and Coleman and found: <http://www.texasescapes.com/TOWNS/Santa_Anna/santa_anna.htm>
After reading everything I could, I wrote a piece about the Rock Carvings that I remembered from my childhood and how they had probably been destroyed. the piect was published at the above site and I later wrote to an old classmate of mine telling him about it.
He, in turn wrote to another friend who had read on this site that some of the carvings had been returned.
The Carving shown on the homepage of this site indeed is the one that I remember and the carving of the Eagle mentioned on the home page must have referred to the carving of "U.S.Marine Corps Emblem" that I spoke of which was a Globe with an Eagle on top and an Anchor on the bottom and the inscription "In Memory of my Buddie Ollie" . It pleases me greatly to hear that at least one of the carvings is there.
I find it difficult to express my feelings upon reading all of the many comments below. Many of the people mentioned were friends and acquaintences of mine and my family's.
The George T. England family lived in and around Santa Anna from the 1920's through the 1950's.

My best wishes to all of our friends still in that part of the country.

Comments:I don't know mu about Santa Anna because I was just there for a very short while back in 1961 and 1962. We were brought to Trickham by my father's boss and we(my older sister and I) went to school in Sant Anna for a very short while during my first grade and third grade. For some reason I hava never forgotten the few people we met from Santa Anna. One family in particular that I remember is the Trinidad family. And of course the one person that I will never forget is Mr. James Ferton Martin (to me he will always be "Felton" as my dad used to called him. The reason that I will always remember this man is because he was the one that believed in my dad and helped him bring all of us to Trickham from Mexico. I visted Santa Anna and Mr. Martin in Trickham in May 2004 after 42 years. I was glad that I visited the elementary school in Santa Anna and Trichham. I wish with all my heart that we had stayed in Santa Anna in 1962.

Dana was one of the members of the 1998 Lost Adams Diggings search in New Mexico. Fact is, there are even pictures of him on my website.

I'm thankful the lady mentioned she was among the legions of the female gender to have a crush on him.

Dana's (last I knew of him) re-captured a middling amount of his ancestral holdings in the Santa Anna/Trickham vicinity. Had more goats than most people aspire to. He and his wife built a beautiful home there and appeared to be thriving.

As I stood out side of a furniture store on the side walk I could see myself there a 120 years ago and all that was happening at that time, and it was beautiful. Seeing how the west was won. Wagon trains headed west to California. Wish I knew people there, I will be back every year to visit the stores. By the way I am not 120 years old, just visualizing what I can see when I go back in time. I am glad I found this web page, it is so nice. Thank you so much for this.

I have thought what would it be like to relocate back to Santa Anna. What kind of jobs do they have there. I work for the VA Hospital since 1987. Centeral Suppy Tech. I wonder if there is anyone still there that would remember me. Go Mountainners. Oh yes I remember the 2 burger places across from the school. Bet they are long gone but they sure were good.

Comments:I grew up in Brownwood, but my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Hefner lived in Santa Anna until they passed away in the early 1960s. Their house was the one just past the Gulf Station on the right as you drove in from Brownwood. My mother and aunts would visit there just about every Sunday and they'd take me with them. It was a great place for a kid to poke around. One of my big treats was to walk over to the Gulf station and get a Nehi Grape Soda on a hot summer day. They only cost a nickel then.

The last time I was there was on the way back to Austin from Abilene about three years ago and I didn't really have much time to look around. The Gulf station's gone now and so is my grandparents' house, but I have really great memories of visiting there. It's good to see what's going on with the town and that this website exists. Next time my wife and I are in Brownwood, we'll try to make more time for a trip back and for some exploring.

My Father, Joe Bell, My Aunts- Eva Lee Williams& Nell Bell Myers, my uncles- Tom Bell & Nowlin Myers and his family, my grandmother Dora Manda Bell and so many more all from Santa Anna.

My aunt, Nell Myers left Santa Anna about 3 years ago and now lives here in Arlington,Texas. I know she misses her home town and her friends. I spent may summers visiting there many summers when I was growing up as did my daughter Robbie Eaves.

Some of the stories about my dad, Joe Bell and his brother Tom and their friends growing up are interesting to say the least.

I know my aunt Nell would love to hear any stories or info you might have about their family and yours.

Love this wweb site.

I was born and partly raised in a little cement plastered three room house maybe 300 yards south of Harmony Baptist Church and Brown Ranch School crossroads where I attended the first and part of the second grade, leaving there in 1945 and returning for about a year in 1954/5 batching with my grandfather, H. C. Rude, before entering the Navy in 1955, January.
Spent many an hour looking at the Santa Anna Mountains from the front porch of that little house, which is bearly there to this day. Holy ground!
I would like to make one obvious correction about the buffalo having crossed to this Country from Europe some 25,000 years ago.
Folks, I don't think there was much of anything on the whole Earth that many years back. It has only been approximately 6,040 years since Adam was here, I respectfully submit.
Oh, the Earth was here much longer than that, but "without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep."
I submit my oldest sister's name as a reference, Betty "Minatra" Baber of Coleman, Texas.

We used to visit Grandma Pritchard back in the 60's and
I can remember many a day spent running up and down the mountain behind Grandma's house. We lost our Dear Mother this
past October (2005) and going through some of the old pictures
from that time really brought back some wondeful memories. I can remember Grandma's house being full of relatives and the smell of some good home cooking throughout the house. I am 48
now, but I remember those days like they were yesterday. God Bless you San'y Anna (that's how we said it then), and a big hello to any and all the Pritchard's from Santa Anna,Texas.

The people of the town that we met, who were eating in the Opera Theater, were some of the nicest people I have met in a very long time. It took me back decades when everyone was a friend and there were no strangers. The photo on your cover story is my great-grandfather - his name was (as the BIA spelled it) A-se-pemm-my, his english name was John Whiteman. He was born on the Brazos Reserve in 1858 and died on May 3, 1931. He is buried at the Cache Creek Indian Cemetery west of Apache, OK. The meaning of his name was "to look or see through Grey Eyes" or "Grey Eyes'. I have no problem with the photo being published if photo was idenified - most people probably think he was Santa Anna. Do us a favor and idenify the photo or remove it. Thanks PS Good article.

I remember sitting on my grandmother's front porch shelling peas and going out in the garden behind her house that my Uncle Ernest Roberts kept looking for horned toads - walking the dirt streets back around her area to pick up fresh eggs from one of her neighbors, waiting for the milk man to come, and putting the red flag up on her mail box so the mailman would know we had out going mail. I haven't been back since my Aunt Frances died back in 1998. There isn't anyone left really for me to go see and just making the trek out to visit the cemetary is just too sad most times because I can still close my eyes and remember all the wonderful times I spent out there and the most wonderful person in my life - my grandma Talley.

I have been reading some history of the Coleman county area and think that it is very interesting. I have also been to several websites to see photographs of buildings in the area. I would LOVE to see more and even visit the town. I am only a few hours away in San Angelo going to ASU and would love to have an excuse to come roam the streets and backroads!

THIS WAS THE WINTER CAMP FOR COMANCHE CHIEF SANTA ANNA A MEMBER OF THE PENATEKA BAND.

I CAME ACROSS THIS SITE AND AS I READ, ITS VERY INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE EVEN MENTION THE FACT THAT THE COMANCHES ONCE LIVED AT SANTA ANNA. I WOULD LOVE TO VISIT YOUR TOWN. AND SEE THE MOUNTAINS THAT MY ANCESTORS ONCE ROAMED. I WOULD JUST LOVE IT.

DO YOU HAVE ANY HISTORY OF THIS IN YOUR CITY HALL OR LIBRARY? WHAT IS THE POPULATION? FROM WHAT I READ, THERE IS A LOT OF HISTORY FROM THE CAUCASION POPULATION, ARE THERE ANY INDIANS LIVING THERE AT THIS TIME? I GUESS I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE CELEBRATIONS THAT OUR TRIBE HAD THERE. ARE THEY ONGOING?

Comments:Hello All

I used to live in Trickham Texas, and went to school in Santa Anna from 5th to 8th grades no one liked the dairy hands son back then and I went on to help feed this great nation of ours as a ranch hand.
So think back on historical quotes and you may find that farm and ranch hands arent such bad folk after all.
"For am army travels on thier stomachs."
also please remember that our children can not learn without a healthy diet.
And though some of you did not like me I am sorry that I bothered you hope that you now understand because I'm not sure that I do but I keep trying.
Blessed Be
Wade Brooks aka Talen GreenDragon
PS
And yes my family moved to Bangs, so I became a bangs Dragon but that is not where the greendragon come from.
The dragon can be found through out the world and usualy means great knowledge and power, and prosperity.
It is this that I hope for each of the Santa Anna Mountainiers.
With great Love Blessed Be.

Comments:Santa Anna is very much a part of my family history. My great great grandfather, Joe Hicks, owned a little hamburger joint just off the main drag around 1930. His daughter, my great grandmother, Georgia Hicks Routh Wagner, also owned a little cafe and sold Avon in her "retirement". My grandmother, Linnie Routh Biggs Bartlett, had a beauty shop for several years, and my grandfather, Willis Bartlett, worked for the Santa Fe Railroad until his death in 1970. My uncle, Jack Mobley, was postmaster for many years. My dad, H.L. Biggs, was born in Sealy Hospital.

My husband has family there as well and his cousin, Gary Patterson owns the Coleman County Cabinet Shop. Deep roots for us in Santa Anna.

If anyone knows where in SA my great great grandfather's cafe was located, please contact me at the listed email address. Joe Hicks' page in my geneology research is pretty empty!

I loved reading all the history, thanks!

Reading about the commanches reminded me of the lease I grew up on, had a site in one of the pastures with what my Dad considered to be indian mounds. We never dug in that area , but have always been curious what those two mounds really were. The location wasa adjacent to a small valley that sweetie creek flowed though and a small wet weather spring flowed as a tributary to sweetie creek. the sort of site that indians looked for to set camp.

Great website

Comments:What is it about small town living...?

there is a certain atmosphere within the city limits that you do not feel, find or sense elsewhere.

Try as one may to live in a larger city after growing up in Santa Anna, Texas or other "Santa Anna's" abroad; one might find themselves questioning in the back of their mind what is missing, what have i forgotten, something just isn't right. Go back in your memory bank and recall the times you had as a child, a young girl/boy, a young man/lady, and then look at where you are now as a man/woman. There it is the very thing you have been searching for. Roots. Roots. Roots. What roots have you put aside? What roots have you let slide? Which roots are ritht there on top? As well as, to whom do you owe the credit for these roots? I can almost guess it is someone you grew up with, someone that raised you, or someone that looked out for you and they just happened to be your neighbor from YOUR home town "SANTA ANNA".

I graduated in 1967 from SAHS and my 2 sisters, Wanda and Kittie graduated ain 1969 and 1971 (I believe)! ... We have come a long way since those days of pepsquad, Mr. Gravit's Civics class, Ellyn's trysts, and Butch Makuta's eyes. I understand several, including Butch, have passed from our world and into the next. I have such fond memories of Wendell Rice, and Dana Evans (lord the crush I had on you sir!) and Loretta Broadway (whew!) --- and how could I forget Yvonne Rushing and Neta McClure? What fun we had - and back then, we thought life was so complicated!!!

Beth Irick, Marguerite Horner and The queen, Sonja, along with Ms. Robinette ... and all the rest --- well ... it was a trip ...

I'm now raising 3 grandsons who are 16, 13 and 12 ... so I have little time (or energy) for much else.

They keep me young (i wish!!!)

Comments:Sometimes a walk down memory lane does one good
Sometimes a walk down memory lane leaves on sad
Sometimes a walk down memory lane keeps one going
Sometimes a walk down memory lane brings you back...

Santa Anna was just that.

Simplistic, basic and nothing like the taste of gram's peach cobler or pumpkin cake or seeing grandpa out in the field on the tractor and as you walked thru town...(who needs a car in this town...a walk teaches one so much more) you heard the laughter of children, the conversations among the elders in the local coffee shop and the 'guys' discussing last weeks football game or the the 'gals' sharing their stories.

Santa Anna was the place to be when growing up. Parents were involved and concerned more than we ever realized. The support they gave and the time and efforts they put into us kids will forever be remembered.

It has been somE time that I have entered into the city limits of my hometown but as i recall from the last that feeling will forever remain.

Kenny Chesney has a song "I GO BACK" that would be a song that says it all for Santa Anna. What about the movie Hope Floats, as "BIRDIE" walks across the football field and remebers her days as a cheerleader?

It seems there is a little bit of something in everything that brings you back...
