My father was Sheriff Roger Dean of Calhoun County Michigan, the sheriff who notified California authorities of a Calhoun County inmate whom confessed to Sal's murder. My father passed away when I was very young, in fact, only a short time after he reported the confession of the inmate. I was just six years old when Sal departed this earth, but I have read a great deal about him through my research and understanding of my own father. Peace to all that loved Sal.

I had the fantastic great luck of meeting Sal Mineo, following his stage performance in: "Sunday in New York"
while I was visiting Orlando Florida (from Vancouver Canada) in October 1973.
Not only did I meet Sal but he then treated me to dinner, along with himself and 2 of the actresses following which,
we all went dancing at a nightclub.
I was heartbroken by his totally untimely death and
furthermore, my own birthday is on February the 13th. and so, only hours after his tragic passing...
In 1958 I sent him a letter (via his fanclub) and had the joy of receiving a "semi-God" looking photo of him, on which he replied to my letter...

Last night we watched Sal's first guest star appearance on the original Hawaii Five-0, via Netflix Instant. (Season 1, Episode 3, "Tiger By the Tail.") It's likely I watched this as a kid, but since that was longer ago than I care to admit, it was a pleasant surprise to see him in his role as a young singer who is kidnapped. (Of course there's a twist.) Sal was great of course!

i love sal in the same way all his fans do gay or striat. he was a very talented actor who had some great roles got labeled then worked tv only. his is a life that should not have been cut short. he had so much to offer as a actor and person. his was a smoldering sexualaity from rebel onwards he defined hot (happens to be gay) actor. he will always be remembered and live on in his work. I finished reading "Sal Mineo" by Michael Michaud tonight. The best two days of reading I've done in a long while! I was expecting to be moved and to learn a lot, but this surpassed my expectations. I am thankful that so many people were willing and able to give their personal thoughts on Sal. I am especially grateful Jill was able to give her feelings and memories before she passed in December.
He may not have thought he meant a lot to the younger crowd, but his life and legacy means a lot to me. I only wish he could be around now because I'd find his take on things refreshing.

Have been a fan of old movies for a long time, but have just recently begun to appreciate the legacy of the amazing Mr. Mineo. Watched the live "Studio One" version of "Dino" last night--the intensity and raw emotion of that live performance is still unsettling 55 years later. Also had a chance to revisit "The Gene Krupa Story" recently. Without Mineo, "Krupa" would certainly have been the usual negligible Hollywood pseudo-biography . . . but Mineo's electrifying portrayal raises it to classic status.

This is a great page for Sal Mineo. I just started looking into his life because my father told me they were friends. My father lived on 217th St in the Bronx and what a great guy he was.We laugh at pictures of my father because his hair was all greased and puffed up and he told me that Sal was the one who taught him how to do that, hahha. I have read a little bit about him today and he seemed interesting. My father and his brothers used to call his mom "Aunt" Josephine. They were close to his family. Hopefully his brothers and sister will see this and remember the Olivieri Family.Frankie,John and Sal.

I am enjoying the new biography very much. I just read the

In high school, circa 1974, I worked as the prop master for a dinner theater in Dallas. Sal starred and directed in a show (and I'll be damned if I remember the name of it) that ran for 6 weeks - the maximum we could allow before the next show came in. Even though I was only 16, he still respected me and worked with me as if I were his own age. To his credit he even volunteered to come to my high school and speak to a couple of our drama classes early on a weekday morning. He was a wonderful man - generous, kind, philosophical, and humorous beyond belief. It's odd how at one point you think you will be friends with someone forever, yet 18 months later that person is dead. I still remember hearing about it on the radio while driving to work. I just pulled over and cried. I still miss him; I can see his face, I can feel that hug, and I can still feel how proud I was of the professional respect he gave me. I'll just never be able to say goodbye....

i remember my cousin marie pezzuto lived in the same primarily italian neighborhood as the mineo's in the bronx. since i was a drummer(and, still am) and loved the way sal played the drums, my cousin set up a day with his mom when i was to meet sal.that was the late 5o's early sixties(i was about 12).unfortunately, he was delayed in california his mom said ,and after that, i never got to a chance to meet him again.
of course i was a big fan and saw him in the many rock n roll films he made like "rock pretty baby"......but, his oscar winning performances will never be forgotten like rebel without a cause and exodus.
my all time favorite performance of sal's was the gene krupa story. i did get to meet gene krupa before he died circa 1973 at the outrigger in freeport, long island.my band the good guys were the house band. when i brought up the gene krupa story, gene mentioned that sal did a fabulous job acting on the film.he told me that sal called him up once a year to let him know how many royalty checks he got .....gene said "i should have listened to him-and took the royalties!

A fellow bronx boy here. I always felt Sal Mineo was taken much too soon. So was James Dean & Natalie Wood. My heart goes out to his family who must still feel the loss. I only hope Sal gets his star in Hollywood. Truly gifted Actor ,with two academy nominations before the age of 25.
He is not mentioned enough in the film world,or by the industry, and that is Sad. I really feel because of his so called life style. He is not honored, and that is very Sad.
He deserves to be honored and I hope I see it happen.

In my life, now approaching 66years, there are only two actors, and one actress, that have ever had a profound effect on me through their performances; Sal Mineo, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor. Icons isn't the word, "immortal" is. Every performance Sal Mineo ever did was him actually living the part. My admiration and affection for him lives on fifty years after the first time that I saw him. He didn't need Oscars, he won the hearts of all who saw his work. I would, very much, imagine that those trophies were much more important to him.

My name is Joseph Fiero (stage name). I wanted to know if anyone could put me in touch with Sal Mineos Family, I'm a aspiring actor/musician and singer. Its really strange because I've always wanted to be a actor ever since I was a little kid. I also love music and have such a passion for things and no one else inside my family shares this passion. I also look just like Sal Mineo, I know its kind of weird but people say I do. I can give you the links to my sites at the end of this email so you can see as well as videos.
I have been contacted my some look a like sites to play him but before I do I want to know everything about him because I want to follow in his footsteps.
I'm married and have two kids and and every time my wife shows people they freak out. I also have a strange passion for the era that he lived in, like I was suppose to be in the 70's. You can see from what I've done that I have a passion for those times as well as muscle cars.
My ultimate dream is to play him in a remake of one of his movies or a story of him. Anyways, please let me know if it is possible to contact the Mineo family.
Here are my links and pictures:

The weirdest part of it all is that I feel a connection to him and I just recently discovered who he was...
I also felt that I was going to die young ever since my teens I would tell my mother that I felt I wasn't going to live long. When I look at his older pictures when he was in his late 20's early 30's it seems like I'm looking into the future...
Maybe I'm just crazy! Either way I want to play him one day... I know I can.
All of them.

I looked for the name Sal Mineo on internet because two days ago I saw the film "Thunderheart" with Sam Shepard and Val Kilmer. When they meet the first time the first says to the second that he looks like Sal Mineo in film about Indians, ment as a cynical joke. I wrote the name Sal Mineo down and so I came to see this website about him. Because of wikipedia I know also that he played Plato in "Rebel without a cause". Internet is a great thing. In its universe I found this site.
Val kilmer turnes out to be also a kind of "rebel", but wíth a cause, when he is confronted with corruption etc. in an Indian reservation in the seventies.
Greetings from Holland,
yours sincerely,
Paul.

I came upon a reference to Sal Mineo while more or less just surfing the web. But it brought back memories. I grew up in the Bronx, and for some reason I do not remember, Sal Mineo was an actor whose name came up alot in conversation. I guess someone who grows up in the Bronx takes a lot of pride in Bronxites who do well.
Years later, I lived in Westchester county, north of the City. There was a town I lived near, called Mamaroneck. On its Main Street there was a sort of deli. It was rumored that Sal Mineo's parents owned and worked at this deli/grocery store. I bought things there, but never asked.
Well, just a memory. I often wonder if the rumor was true. Was this store owned my the parents of Sal Mineo?

I have been a fan of Sal's for 30 years or more. Living in Indiana I can't remember a time that I didn't know about James Dean. As a matter of fact James Dean was 1 of the 3 James's that I named my son after.
Anyway---once I saw Rebel Without A Cause I was hooked on Sal. He was such a wonderful actor and from all I have read was and even more wonderful person. It is such a shame that he was taken away from us the way he was.
This is a great site and I am so glad that I found it.
I love them all.

I was always a huge fan of Sal. In the late 60's I was in a place in Amsterdam the Netherlands and Sal came in. All alone, he stood in the back and looked around. I went up to him and started to talk, at first he didn't say to much. But after a while the ice melted and he was very nice. A death what never should have happened.

I have enjoyed Sal Mineo's work for many years - and I hope that one day - in the not-too-distant future - we will see his story made into a film. In my opinion, the perfect performer to play Sal is Jai Rodriguez. He can act, he can sing, and he has a physical resemblance to Sal as well. My fingers are crossed that it will all come together!

A very impressive website. I only found out recently how he died, although I knew he had died young. He was so beautiful and an icon to all, not just a gay icon which I immediately thought. It's such a shame he was taken from the world so young. A man you fell in love with as soon as you saw him.

I was 9 years old when Sal Mineo tragically was murdered,I
as a bisexual man respect the talent as an actor he had. I
wonder what he would say about Hollywood now if he were alive and breathing today. (For myself:now 39 years old) I
hope some of us fans could make a memorial service for him

From the first time I saw Sal in a tv movie when I was fourteen I was a fan. The movie was "Escape From Zahrain" its been twenty years since that day and I still get butter flies just hearing his name. I love this site and I am so happy to know so many feel the same about him as I still do. I am still looking for a copy of this movie if anyone can help me it would be wonderful.

Great site. I am suprised there is no mention of Sal's radio show. He had a show on KABC radio here in Los Angeles around 1974 or 1975. The show was on Saturday nights from 7pm - 9pm I believe. His show revolved around movies and theater talk. He was quite good. As I remember he quit the show just prior to his last play. I wonder if there are any tapes of his broadcasts?

I married Sal's first cousin Joe Mineo and it seems like just yesterday that I came into the Mineo family. I can remember uncle Sal & aunt Josie as well as his siblings, Victor, Michael & Sarina. We speak of Sal on a regular basis and my husband can reimnise about the days that he and his cousins spent together. We tell out children and grandchildren all about Sal as well as the rest of the Mineo clan and hope that Sal's legacy lives on for many more years. He unfortunately was taken away from his family much too soon but will be remember for his wonderful sense of humor and loving sense of family togetherness. We would love to be back in touch with Sarina and Victor if at all possible. We now reside in Connecticut and hope to hear from family members soon.

Good job Samantha with the web site. Other than Sarina and
Victor, I am probably the closest living cousin to Sal.
The relationship is Sals father and my father Anthony were
brothers, which make sal and I first cousins.
What remains in my memories of Sal is how we would get together when he lived in the house off the Hutchinson River
Parkway near the Whitestone Bridge in the Bronx.
The best memory I have is when Sal was going to Manhattan to
take dancing lessons and got his big break when he got his first part in a play called The King and I with Yule Brenner. They needed a young dancer to say a few words in
the play. That was the break Sal needed. The part lasted about four years for Sal. The rest is history.
Give my love to my cousin Sarina and Victor.

Great to read other fan's comments, it is what really keeps Sal's memory alive. The website is FANtastic and a credit to John and Karen.
Sal said in an interview, the best way to remember him was to watch his movies which all of us fans do.
It is also important to consider "Fortune and men's eyes" and "P.S. your cat is dead" the movies of the plays Sal put a lot into and was so passionate about. While watching them, one can easily picture him playing those roles as he had many times on stage. They give an insight to a mature Sal in other roles and facets of theater he chose to be involved in
The dedication to Sal at the end of P.S. your cat is dead, is particularly touching, also of course, it was what he was working on at the time of his death.
In a few days it will be the
30th aniversary of Sal Mineo's death.

wow...this is a real nice website in honor of Sal Mineo. It is great to know that people will carry him on, so he is not forgotten. Though he was well before my time, I feel as if I know quite a bit there is to know about him. His work is marvolous (sp?), through family I've heard stories about how big he was at the prime of his career. Once again it is nice to see that him and his work will not be forgotten. Sal Mineo, I've been told is one of my second cousins. His father had immigrated here with my grandfather(his brother) and our family. Then later had seperated to two different cities to make a living. There are many questions that my family had always wondered about the Mineos, if there is anyone that could possibly contact me with information, we would be greatly thankful.
Thankyou for sharing this information about Sal with me,

What an incredibly realized site. All praise for what has to be an absolute labor of love & respect.
The recent release of "The James Dean Collection" on DVD & this evening's PBS airing of the George Stevens' documentary, put me to the task of looking for web info on my eternal, albeit unrealized, crush, the late Mr. Mineo. First on the Yahoo search was this site. Praise to Yahoo for cutting to the chase.
Being the product of a conservative & sheltered childhood, I was only marginally aware of him prior to his murder [when I was in high school]. Most notably became aware after coming upon [& saving] a copy of In Touch with "the nude.†But once graduated, I visited L.A. [a year or two after "it happened"], I was able to “visit†the apartment complex [actually, loiter on the sidewalk outside].
In the mid-80s, when I was later living/working in West Hollywood at Tower Records, during breaks, or walks home, I would often take leisurely strolls by the building; his presence was obvious & ominous. Even later in life, I would ultimately, but briefly, date someone [ironically, also named Sal] who looked amazingly like him [oh, how he hated the references...too bad for him].
When the Taragon compilation CD was released I wasted not one moment. When, in the early 90s, I was doing regional theatre in central CA, I acquired a copy of the play Fortune & Men's Eyes; how I would have loved to produce, direct, act in or otherwise be involved in a restaging.
Why I didn’t investigate films, books or web info any further was unforgivably due to “real like†getting in the way. No more. Thanks for a great overview. I will be visiting frequently in the future.
[Sorry for being so wordy, but I can't seem to stop...edit at you see fit].
"Rebel...," but outside of "Giant" I haven't seen any others yet, that I recall.

A bit of detective work here. In the A&E Biography documentary there is footage of Sal in the 70s...eg when he's speaking on the phone trying to get a backer for his play, and when he's out on the street dressed like Huggy Bear welcoming people to the theatre. This was clearly from either a documentary about him or Arts programme of the time. Can anyone identify what show that was...and whether the documentary in question still exists? Unlikely to be available I know...but its nice and rare to see him walking and talking and moving as the real life actor, rather than as a role in a movie! So does anyone know?

Hi everyone - I am tearing my hair out trying to find the A&E Biography of Sal and can't find it anywhere. I'm from London, England so ideally would prefer a DVD as I have a multi-regional DVD player. Can anyone tell me where I can get hold of a copy as the VHS on Amazon is just no good to me as have PAL format only. My collection of Sal memorabilia films etc. grows stronger every day so if any of you guys would like to email to swap stories etc. I would be happy to hear from you. I have recently watched "Who Killed Teddy Bear" which was fantastic and am thrilled that upon visiting NY in March managed to photograph an area in Central Park (outside the zoo) where Sal would have been standing whilst filming part of Teddy Bear!!! Am also hoping to go back to NY again later this year to visit Sal's grave although it will be a thoroughly moving experience it's one I am desperate to do. Guys, am happy to chat about Sal so please email me.Laura.

My son, John Seger(of Los Angeles) owns this Sal Mineo site and I am James Dean's first cousin. I knew him as Jimmy!
I knew him as a child and until 18..his mother and my father were brother and sister...She was such a delightful lady,
she made a big impact on my life as a child as we were in there home 2 and 3 times a week until I was 7. His dad was a sweet guy and very loving father...don't believe all you hear. he never deserted Jimmy. Most people do not want to hear of Jimmy other than being a movie star.
I was interviewed (my first and last) by a French movie company who are doing a documentary on James Dean the man..will be shown in France in Sept., La in Aug. , James Dean festival...either or both, Marion and Fairmount. To my knowledge there only 3 of us left who knew Jimmy as a young boy...The last member of the immediate family died 3 yrs. ago.
I only agreed to the interview as a tribute to Aunt Mildred and Uncle Winton...so much as been said about them that are not true..
so I had my 15 min. of fame and that is my tribute to a loving couple...
My oldest son lives in Bonita Springs, (his name is James also) and my only daughter, Terese, lives in Southern California.
have a great day and believe it or not...Jimmy Dean was human...a very caring fun loving child, who was so loved by his parents. and such a tragic moment when Aunt Mildred died...she and Uncle Winton would have been so proud of Jimmy.
The interview did not bother me, they were very caring group. I only wanted things cleared about his family with the truth and regardless of what they believe...when you know what is right, and they state other facts, there is a "Wilson " challenge and look out!!

I first saw Sal Mineo in Rebel Without A Cause when I was a junior in high school. I remember sitting in our school auditorium so happy to be out of Math class, then "Plato" came on the screen and I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I was hooked I became a Sal Mineo fan then and there. I remember the morning I heard the news he died. It was a year after seeing him on the screen in our school, I was a senior. I remember feeling so sad...like I lost a good friend. This past Friday I went to the Gates Of Heaven Cemetary to pay my respects to my grandfather who died back in 1980...I hadn't been there in a while. Since I was there I went to see Sal Mineo's final resting place. I couldn't find it at first because there was still some snow on the ground, I was just about ready to give up when I came across a stone that said Mineo, the first name was covered with snow. I removed the snow and discovered it wasn't Sal...then I made out the name Mineo on the stone beside it. I felt so sad for him because it was covered with mud from the melting snow and you could barely make out his name. I cleared the mud the best I could and placed a red carnation there for him. It was the least I could do, it was my way of saying Thank You and that he will be remembered.

I had seen Rebel, Crime in the streets, Dino and one or two other Sal Mineo movies in the past, and I had vague recollections of his awfull murder and rumors about his sexuality. This may be a little controversial but my interest has only really peaked after watching "Who Killed Teddy Bear"! Yes it`s cheap and a little tacky, but the performances are excellent (well all except Jan Murray anyway!)particularly Elaine Strich and Sal. Juliet Prowse is very appealing- don`t get me started on that one! and I loved the scenes of Sal working out, go-go dancing and cruising along sleazy 42nd street. It may well have damaged Sal`s career in the long run to have played a stalker but it is a truly unforgetable film and performance!

I have so many questions I'd love to ask Sal if he were still with us today...and hearing from those who knew him well, or are in some way connected to him is more than I could have ever hoped for.

What a truly wonderful person Sal was. I so admire his strength of character for being the person he was, and not what society and the film industry wanted him to be. He has left behind a legacy of brilliant performances that will entertain for decades to come. They say the good die young, and in Sal's case this is absolutely true. He derserved so much more out of life. But to be so very popular many years after his passing says it all. He must be looking dowm with a huge grin on that handsome face.

I found this site in the webtv.users news group of all places. (Yes, computer users, we're still aound :) The poster John Seger said without Webtv this site, the official site on Sal, wouldn't exist. I can relate to that because my Del Shannon site was the first on the internet to get any recognition.
So good luck to you on this site for Sal. Congratulation, it looks great!
~~well wishes~~
