Same Lauren. Turns out the "black pages" was a really well-folded poster inside! Good to know. Thanks for giving us "Tim", keep on writing!
-Hi Lauren, Glad you found the poster. :) Thank /you/ for your encouraging words about my writing - much appreciated. Best wishes from London, Sam www.samenthoven.com

Mr. Enthoven,
One question I am dying to have answered is about your USA book edition, the one with the "glowing red eye". This book has 4 black pages in between pages 188 and 189. Is there a reason there are these black pages in the book? I cannot find this answer elsewhere. Thank you.

It's funny how I came across TIM Defender of Earth, I just saw a giant looking red eye with tim written in bold letters. I thought at first the book was going to be weird, boy was I wrong! I love it, and think it's pretty cool how it ended with [*CENSORED - SPOILERS!*]. My favorite character was the kraken! I hope to see some more of your awesome work!
-Hello Hannah, Your message has made me very happy! I'm delighted you enjoyed TIM, and especially thrilled by what you said about the ending: I'm just sorry I had to chop it in case anyone sees it who hasn't read the book yet - hope you understand. Glad you liked the Kraken: I'm very fond of it, too. In fact there's also a strong cephalopod element in what I'm working on now - SNEE HEE HEE! ahem, 'scuse me. Hope you get to see it one day, and that it makes you smile when you do. :D Thank you for your message, Hannah, it means a lot to me. Best wishes from London and power to your tentacles, Sam www.samenthoven.com

Is there going to be a sequel to tim i loved that book
-Hello James, I'm delighted you enjoyed Tim so much, and I really appreciate your taking the time to tell me so. Thank you! I hope this doesn't disappoint you too much, but the answer to your question is No. I don't plan to write a sequel to Tim or, right now, any other stories I write. It's a personal thing: I like it when stories leave you space to imagine what might happen afterwards for yourself. I just wanted to comment you on your amazing imagination in The Black Tattoo. It was enough of a fantasy to draw attention, but realistic enough to allow the reader to feel connected to the characters as they progressed. I read this book when I was 13 and it has remained my top recommendation to anyone that asks for suggestions (trust me, there are a LOT of people that search for books they'd consider "worth reading"). I hope to catch up on your work and remain a loyal reader in the future.
Keep up the good work. -Thanks, Christian! Your kind words and encouragement are very much appreciated. I'll do my best. :D Cheers from London, Sam www.samenthoven.com

i realy liked that book about tim do you think you could make a second one?
-Hello, I'm really glad you liked Tim - thanks for letting me know. :D I hope this doesn't come as too much of a disappointment, but my plan right now is never to write a sequel to any of my books. I think there are already too many sequels in the world, and too many of them are disappointing. I would like all my stories to stand alone. Hey sam i loved your book Tim Defender Of The Earth.
It was awesome! I loved it when Tim threw the Big Ben at Mallahide but with my personal passion for dinosaurs your idea for Tim was the best. I wanted to know if you were making a sequel to Tim Defender Of The Earth. Thanks for writing the book Sam -Casey. -Hello Casey, Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled that you enjoyed Tim, and I really appreciate your taking the time to get in touch to tell me so. :D I hope this doesn't come as a disappointment to you but no, I've currently got no plans to write a sequel to Tim, or any of my books. Right now my plan is to write stories that stand by themselves. Partly it's because I think there are already too many sequels in the world. And partly it's because I don't believe in holding things back for a book 2: every book should be as exciting and thrilling as I can possibly make it! ;D I'm very happy that you got a kick out of Tim (it was an absolute blast to write - especially the Big Ben bit! ;D) If you're interested in more of my writing you can find out all about it via my homepage, address below. You came to my school and you said you found it hard finding someone to publish your books. After you published your first book did you have the same problem with the second, or did the same publisher take your book?
-Hi James! Thanks for getting in touch. :D The contract for my first book The Black Tattoo was a two-book deal - so Tim, Defender of the Earth was included (even though, at the time I signed the deal, I hadn't written it yet!) However: a first book deal is no guarantee you'll get another. I was glad - and relieved! - that Random House Children's Books (who published the first two) liked the sound of what I was planning for books 3 (Crawlers) and 4 (?!) I had a great time at St Ivo yesterday. If you're interested I've just put a post and pics up at my current blog: www.theycrawl.com/news Thanks again for your question, James. All best wishes to you, Sam

Dear Sam
I really like Tim Defender Of The Earth. I hope you write second one. I`m a big fan of yours. your fan Jeffrey -Hi Jeffrey, Thanks so much for your lovely message! I'm thrilled that you enjoyed Tim, and it's very kind of you to write and tell me so. Right now all my stories are standalones - self-contained books. So (and if this comes as a disappointment to you, I'm sorry!) I've got no plans to write a second Tim book. But if you liked Tim, I hope you might like my other books, too! The Black Tattoo has been out for a while now: that one's full of swordfights, flying kung fu, vomiting bats, the end of the universe, and other fun stuff like that. And my new book, Crawlers, comes out this April: that one's a horror story! For the latest on what I'm up to, keep an eye on my homepage, address below. Thanks again for your kind words, Jeffrey. how did u get the idea for all the demons in hell?
-Hi Ethan, The ideas for the demons in The Black Tattoo came the same way I get all my ideas. I don't wait for ideas: I make them come to me, by asking myself questions, and the main question - particularly in the demons' case! - is, simply, What would be fun? I love monsters. I love thinking about them; I love writing about them. So the demons in Hell in Black Tat were all about having as many different monsters as I possibly could! There was another element to it, in that I wanted to include a large percentage of demons who were monstrous, talking/flying/whatever versions of animals that can be found on Earth. The idea was that a certain person (being careful of spoilers here!) might have used those demons as inspiration for... another of his little creative projects. :D Anyway: the main thing is, don't wait for ideas. Think instead about what you would love; what would make you excited. That's the best way to start any big endeavour, particularly a creative one. All best wishes to you from here in London, Sam www.samenthoven.com

ME AGAIN! Why did it take you 5 years to write The black tattoo? And how is it fun?!
-Hi Derek! Hope you enjoyed the talk today: I've written a silly blog post about it over at www.trappedbymonsters.com Why did Black Tat take five years? That's how long it took me to get the book written and polished into the best shape I possibly could. The polishing was what took the longest (you can find out more at www.theblacktattoo.com) Black Tat was a big project for me, no doubt about it. But like any big project, if you break it down into manageable chunks (small steps towards your goal), and you do them, and keep doing them, because you want it, and love it, and believe in what you're doing, then you can get there. If you approach it like that, you can achieve anything you want. Some of writing Black Tat was definitely fun. I was excited about the story. I had to be, because most of the process of writing it was work. But I did it, I'm proud of it, and when people write in and tell me they enjoy reading the book, that makes me very, very happy. :D I'll answer your other question below....

Was at Pizza Express on 22/10/09 (wooodberrydown). Got your autograph. Just want to ask how you became quite famous. Has anyone inspired you???
-Hi again Derek! "Quite famous"? Hee hee hee! I wouldn't even go that far! :D I'm not famous. Most authors aren't. But I am published: my books are in shops and libraries and online, and people can read them if they want. For ten years that was my biggest ambition, and now it's happened. How? Again, no easy answer I'm afraid: I worked for it. I wrote stories. I sent them off to publishers and agents and anywhere else I could think of. I built up a pile of 134 letters saying 'no'. But I kept working on my stories, writing new ones, pushing myself to get better at this job of writing. I kept sending my stuff out. And eventually, one day, someone said 'yes'. Who inspired me? Lots of people! In particular, there were two terrific authors who came to visit my school when I was young: a comics writer called Alan Grant and a poet called Ted Hughes. Both of them absolutely amazed me: they made this ambition of mine seem possible enough for me to decide to give it a serious go. It's my hope that by visiting schools now and speaking to young people such as yourself, I just might -- might -- pass that sort of inspiration on to a new generation. Or, heh, that's what I'm aiming for, anyway! ;) Thanks for your questions, Derek. All best wishes to you, Sam www.samenthoven.com PS: I've just put your excellent questions (and my, um, answers!) up on my blog, at: www.timdefenderoftheearth.com/news Thanks again, Derek!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the visit, and are enjoying Black Tat: thanks so much for writing to tell me so! :D The current publication date for the new book, CRAWLERS, is this coming April. There's going to be a special Crawlers website: that should be going live in January (my mate Katie is working on it right now - I'm very excited!!!) The plan - as with the Tim and Black Tat sites - is to have the opening scene of the book be up on the site for anyone to read and try. Keep an eye on my homepage (url below) for the latest. ;) Thanks again for the kind words, Addi. They're very much appreciated. All best wishes to you, Sam www.samenthoven.com

hey Sam! You visited the Harwich School and I came to see you. You were really funny- so I brought both of ur books! LOL! U kept saying Buy my books, so I guess u sort of hypnotised me! LOL!
Anyway, I forgot to ask this question- whats it like being an author, cause I wish to be one when I'm older! -Hi Bex! Are you the same Bex as in the message below?? Well, Hi anyway! :D I love being an author. It's my dream job. But like any job, it's not for everyone. Luckily, however, it's an easy one to try: all you have to do is sit down, make up a thrilling story, and write it - it's as simple, and as difficult, as that. The internet is full of thousands of blogs and websites by authors, which may also give you an idea about what being an author is like. For a place to start, try: www.trappedbymonsters.com It's a (quite silly!) joint blog I'm involved in, with seven other authors: all their websites are fabulous, and they're easy to find if you follow the links on the 'authors' page. But nothing will show you what being an author is like as definitely as making the time to give it a go yourself. Whether you find it suits you, or you don't, I wish you the best of luck. Hi, Sam! You visited my school Cornelius Vermuyden on the 1st May 2009. I was soooo excited to hear an author was coming, since I have been writing stories since I was 5 (they were a bit rubbish back then...) and I wanted to hear about it all from someone who writes for a living. I just want to say that it's great that you tell kids to go for it. You totally inspired me that day and I have two fantastic ideas for some books! Thanks so much, I wish I could be you!
-Georgia, thanks so much for your wonderful message!
