Comments:Was a 202 on Able Flight from 1964 to March 1966. Worked weather and also the big board. Mostly called "Stoney" or worse! Buddies with a 202 name of Joey Wender(SSgt) and a guy name of Ssgt Bill Opat (292). Remember Sgt Nehls(our flight caps had the patch Able Aces and Snuffy Smith's picture on it) and Sgt Tuley, our Flight NCO's, but cannot remember our Flight Lieutenant's name. He was a 2nd Lt at the time. Help anyone? Had a lot of fun at roll call after the mid shift and also trips to Baguio and Manila. If anyone has heard from Bill Opat or Joey Wender, let me know. Would like to hear from some of our old flight buddies from all the flights. Thanks, Stoney!

Comments:Just spent some time rereading the posts and started reminiscing about my tours at Clark 66-67, 77-79, plus numerous TDYs and leaves until '90 and one thing stood out in my mind when it meandered back to memories of sitting in the LBJ. Didn't have hardly a pot to piss in, but I did have that ice cold magoo, several strings of sampangita flowers around my neck inhaling the intoxicating fumes, listening to the Monkeys on the jukebox. Looking around checking out the famous "Angeles Street Scene" which hung over the juke box and of course practicing my fractured Tagalog on all the maganda girls in the place, especially Marci, if any of you can remember that beauty. I remember my 18 year old brain thinking it doesn't get any better than this. And then now a days I read "Harry the Horse" on line which comments on the modern day goings on in Angeles and that reaffirms I that I truely was in Town Rat Heaven.

Lots of fond memories about the PI: Chit and Rudy, LBJ, Cobra Den, Dirty Dozen, earthquakes, typhoons etc. Went to San Vito from the PI. Enjoyed both tours but the PI stands out so vividly! Ran into Al Hockley, now Dr. Hockely, at Andrews AFB. Good to see him!

Comments:Hey Guys;
I was in the 6922 at Clark Jan68 -Aug69 then I went to the 6931st. Several of us have claims into VA Re Agent Orange exposure.
We believe our worksite (Bldg 850 and the An/FLR CDA antenna site) was defoliated with agent orange. Remember the DOD did not consider AO harmful and routinely used it on friendly bases for defoliation without taking any protective measures. The picture of our worksite shows obvious defoliation. If it was defoliated it was with Dioxin (agent orange) which was in common use. Do you know what a stroke of luck it is to have that picture?
The VA will accept written statements from Veterans regarding their beliefs and experiences regarding facts not in the record. If any of you share this belief or have specific knowledge of this please contact me and I will facilitate the next step.
If we can substantiate the claim that agent orange was used to defoliate our worksite then VA will accept all of our claims. I know several of us have already been turned down others may have just given up, and others may have died. Until now we have been going at this individually and failing. Together we may be able get this done for all of us.

Comments:I was stationed with TRANSEC in Bldg 825 (Stotsenberg Station) in 66-67. Came back with other Shu Lin Kou refugees in 77 and remained through 79. Worked the aisle and in the S&W Center. I suppose I enjoyed my first tour better because the LBJ and the "Dirty Dozen" existed then. There were some bars on Fields Avenue and 7th Street too. I enjoyed a bunch of the bars included the El Rancho from down town. The Pink Elephant, U&I, 500 club, Annie's place, Mary's Place, Sampagita, Carpet Kiosk, Geisha A Go-Go,and others. In Balibago there was the jug, metro club, Paulines, Cavern, Blue Eagle, Buckaroo, Golden Caribou, Bugs Bunny (later the Horseshoe), Spider, Rabbit (later De Review) Chris&Salley's Kiosk, White Orchid, Aurora's Kiosk, Ruby's Kiosk and too many others to remember. I could get San Magoo for 60 tavs in the market place and a peso most otther places. I believe a bar fine was 10 pesos. Lived in open bay both in 5204 and 5205. I remember Sal and Rading from the Cobra Den. Smiley, the house boy, would always buy your excess cigarette rations. I remember going to the Airman's Open Mess and buying a cheap bottle of Seagrams 7 before getting into a taxi for the main gate. I was too impatient to wait for the bus. But regular jeeps were always a better deal than the special jeeps. Sometimes I wish I could transport myself back 40+ years to that time and place.

Some names I remember were MSgt Greenly (S&W), 2Lt Bebe (or something like that), the Mission Sup was a cigar chewing old MSgt named Schally (or, again, something like that). There were a bunch of Russian trained 203's on the flight were were cross trained to 202 because they had too many RULINGs. There was an X1 named Ernie...Mace Johnson (X1), Pettyjohn (X1)--- and other's whose names I don't remember...too much water under the bridge since the 60's. Bars: Carpet, 500 Club, AWOL -- all in the Dozen...bunch of others I can't remember. Ruby's, Cock and Bull, The Caverns, Phil-Am and bunches of others in Balibago. Somewhere, I think I still have a list of 500 clubs in the CAB area...if I find it, I'll try to post some...oh, yeah...of course, the Rabbit!

Planted an enemy spy right on the spot. Then proceeded to take out his commanding officer. Seen anything like a cong headed right toward you, licking his chops, while you aim and try to hold steady?

Gets better. Saw a young laundry worker caught by the teeth in chicken wire. Fought for my life, took him out and supended my beliefs for a moment.

Was still in tech school in San Angelo when old bunkmate, Hugo Eckstrand wrote to say, "Hey Jeep! No matter what anybody says, get your ass over here!" so I wouldn't make a mistake and go to Europe or another base back in the World. Thanks Hugo! Wonder what happened to him and another great Okie, Jerry Trout from Tulsa. Didn't see any mention of the Melody Club, other side of the street from the Little Brown Jug (LBJ) or the Papagayo outside the side gate or Knobber Sally's. Lived in a house just outside the main gate then moved to an apartment just past the river. Miss bar hopping during typhoons when the base was shut down. Was back in the P.I. on business in 1983 and had a beer in Balibago. The magic was gone for me. The excitement during the Vietnam buildup was contagious - things were jumping and bars were sprouting up like mushrooms after a rain. It was the best party a guy could go to, if you kept an open mind and had an eagerness to embrace it. Oh, the good old days! Wish we could all get together again in Balibago or Angeles... Bill

I was a weatherman (W20230) on Baker flight (the best flight) when we were still 6925th RSM. I was also the team statistician for the basketball team. Our commander was LTC John W. Smith and my best buddies were John T. Smith (Smitty) from Cleveland and Jim Hinton and Al Langen, both from Calif.

Favorite bars downtown were the Rotunda and The Gaiety Club.

Always enjoyed the trip to Baguio. Much cooler.

Sad what ultimately happened to Clark; lots of good times and good memories their. Good thing we didn't know the disaster coming down the road (Vietnam).

All those years ago...wow!

God bless - drop me a line if you like.

My 2nd day back at Kelly I announced that that place was not for me, but it took me a few weeks to get orders to VietNam, just in time they were going to hang me.
Miss: Willie Boedeker, Cook, Scroggins (died, Chappel Hill TN.) Quellin, Franke, scads of others. Was there, antied to the kitty to build the Cabras Den, was there the night the termites ate the door so we had to dronk all the booze to prevent theft.

Forever shamed at having to go from C flight to days!

I have signed in before and always return to see the new posts and see if I recogonize any names. I was in the 6926th as a 306XX from 67-69. One time I rode with a group of guys from the 22nd to Legaspi. It was a 350 mile trip and it took us 24 hours to get there. The roads were terrible when they existed and at one point we had to take a ferry. Does any one out there remember this trip or is there anyone out there that went on this trip?
I recently tried to email Oz Cartwright but it was returned. Anyone have a newer email address for him?
Thanks and love the site,

I was a 306XX with the 6926th from 67-69 and hung out mostly at Annie's Kiosk but have been in most of the bars at one time or another. I went on a motorcycle ride with a group from the 22nd one time but can't remember any names. We rode to Legaspi which was 350 miles away and it took us 24 hours to get there. If anyone remembers going on that ride please email me. Also would like to hear from anyone that was in the 26th or anyone that remembers me. I'm still in contact with Rawley Burns and used to be in touch with Ed Thompson.
Thanks for the great site,

Comments:Been awhile since I've signed in, so just a refresher, and maybe I can add a couple of names to the Dirty Dozen. Arrived in the PI June 65, at the time it was the 6925th, shortly thereafter became the 6922nd SW, and SS (Support Group), I was support in Teletype Maint. Used to hate trouble calls with the malfunction reported as "printing upside down".

A few of the dozen I remember were the Pink Elephant (my very first PI adventure), 500 Club (upstairs over the PE), Esther's (down the block, across the "river" on the same side of the street as PE and 500), also remember the Elbow Room, which was maybe not technically in the Dozen - it was a half block or so up the street that the PE was on the corner of, think there was a church up that street the other direction. Once took a cherry girl to that church trying to hot breath my way into her bed. It worked, but she later tried to do me in with a "7 level" screwdriver - for you non maintenance people that was a little bitty one, as opposed to a "3 level" which took two hands and was more frequently used on tractors. That was a way of saying that the maintenance people with a AFSC of 36370 didn't do much.

Stayed in PI until Dec of 68, re-upped to stay there another tour, the went to the 6910th in Darmstadt.

Ran town hard for the first couple of years, then had a steady until I left. Mostly hung out at Remy's place as the Dozen sorta died out. Best running mate and best friend was Rawley Burns, who worked in our personnel office. We shared a house in Old Balibago, both had cars and motorcycles his was a Suzuki X-6 mine was a Yamaha 305.

I'm now 3/4 retired with a wife, two daughters, six (almost 7) grand children. Play a lot of golf and own a third of a little redneck bar and grill halfway between Mayfield and Paducah, KY. Wish I could load that sucker up and haul it to Angeles.

This is a great website. I was in the PI from 1964-1965 as a 292X1/Z on Able Flt. I see names here of guys I've had a San Miguel or two with, Mike Boyette (Baker) and Doug Quinn (Able) and don't see a lot more that enjoyed Town and the mission. I see a good friend each year a couple of times. He's Bob Barrett, lives in Buffalo, NY, was on Dawg Flt. and we fight the Battle of the PI. I remember the Town map in the Cobra Den and are trying to nail down the Dirty Dozen by name--those bars that you hit after mids rollcall at the Rotonda and exiting to the right. The Starlight Lounge, Betty's Place, the Kathaus, and would like more names if you can remember. Also, plenty good memories of Chris and Sally's, Mama Julies, trips to Dagupan, Maneeela, Subic Bay fishing trips, and Baguio to cool off. You had to be there. Anyways, wife and I live in Schenectady, NY, I'm a writer at
General Electric, do field manuals for turbine installations, etc. and fondly remember the PI. What a trip. Went 2T to Karamursel Turkey after that. Would like to hear from anyone stationed about that time period at either 6922 or 6925th.

Comments:I visited the Cobra Den websiteand saw some familiar names. Well, it's been a while since I bopped my last ditty. I was a 292x1/Z with the Able Animals during 1964 and 1965 when Gene Pacina was our flight Lt., Sgt. Nehls the sarge in charge, and Captain Moffatt watching over us all. I enjoyed San Miguels with a couple of guys I see at this website-Mike Boyette of Baker Flt. and Doug Quinn of Able--and with many others that I've not seen. I'll tell you, I thought it was a great tour of duty--Town was Good, the Magoo was boss, and even the mission was interesting. My wife and I live in Schenectady, I write manuals for General Electric turbine field personnel, and once or twice a year get together with my good friend Bob Barrett (Dawg Flt.) who lives in Buffalo and who was there at the same time I was and we again fight the battle of the PI. Between the two of us we remember a lot of people, a lot of places, and a lot of fun. We're trying to remember all of the Dirty Dozen, those bars that visited after the Rotunda mids roll call by turning right out the door and beating feet towards the Starlight Lounge, Betty's Place, the Kathaus, and the others. Spent some good times at Chris and Sally's, and downtown at Mama Julie's, where the chit book made it a little too easy to scarf up on the lumpia and buy a round or two. Town was Good. After the PI, I went 2T to the 6925th Karamursel near Yalova in Turkey, enjoyed trips to Istanbul, island resorts on Buyukada, and skiing at Uladag. But that's another story. I've fond memories of Dick Cook, Vic McGill, Pat Muccaccio, and many more. But enough for now. I hope this can be posted on the website and would like to talk to some of the guys that were there and remember how incredible those times were.

Comments:Fellow Travelers-
This is a great website, but to understand this you really had to be there, in the PI at Clark. I was in the 6925th on Able Flight from 1964 thru 1966 as a 292x1 dittybopper with RFP training. Our Flight Officer was Lt. Pacina and Sgt. Nehls was the flt. sargeant. Some names here are familiar, although a few years have gone by, Mike Boyette (Baker Flt.)and Doug Quinn (Able Flt.) to name a couple. I had a couple of Mgoos with both. I keep in touch with Bob Barrett (Dog Flt.)who lives in Buffalo and a couple of times a year we resurrect a lot of great memories and again fight the Battle of the PI. I lost contact with others such as Jim Hicks, Dick Cook, Vic McGill, Pat Mucchachio (sp.)who whipped up Able flt. into a frenzy after the last mid--"Let's go to Town!!!!!!!" Town was good. Mike Boyette mentioned the town map that hung on the wall of the Cobra Den. Where did that go? Is it possible to get a copy, ecopy or paper copy of it. Barrett and I remember a number of the bars (the Dirty Dozen) you hit after roll call at the Rotunda--Betty's Place, Kathaus, Starlight Lounge--and would appreciate anyone with a keen memory to supply a few more. The object is to name the Dozen, preferably a baker's Dozen.
Just across the field from checkpoint past the Sari Sari's was Chris and Sally's, a good meeting place, and, of course, Mama Julie's downtown, with plates of lumpia and the chit books, making it a little too easy when buying rounds. Anyways, it was a good time and place to be young, so many experiences--trips to Maneela, Baguio for the cool, Subic Bay for bonita fishing, Dagupan for the beach and bowls of fried rice and prawns. From the PI, I went 2T to Karamursel, Turkey, hung out in the Bul, skied Uladag, summer place on Buyukada, but that's another story. I have really great memories of the PI and Turkey. Even the mission was fun! My wife and I currently live in Schenectady, NY, where I am a tech writer at GE, but occasionally my mind drifts back to a roll call at the Rotunda, baluts, the Doz and the mission.

Comments:Hey guys,

I was a 203 at Clark from 69 to 71, then divided my time between Yokota and Osan for a year.

I remember almost nothing about Clark -- except the Cobra Den, Building 850, the FLR-9 and the main gate. I guess I had a real good time. I do remember a few bars -- the Jug. Was there an A-Frame? My memory is shot.

Still, I am attempting to write a novel set in Clark/Angeles 69-71. About a guy and his hammer. I would really love to hear your stories -- the bars, the hammers, all that stuff. As I may have said above, my memory is short, so I need to borrow some memories.

Does anyone out there remember the great PI earthquake? We drank a LOT of San Magoo that next day. It was a real trip watching the field behind the barracks roll for what seemed like forever.

My son is a 6th grade student at the Jakarta International School and one of his history projects is to research and document a significant event in his family history. So, he picked my time in USAFSS. I told him about the 6922nd Cobras and all the adventures I had in 1965-66, including my TDYs to Nam. Just on a whim I googled "6922nd USAFSS" and up pops your site. I was a x-2 and 203 Thai Linguist (my recollection which is foggy after 40 years). Reading the dreambook brings a flood of memories of my time there. One of my buds was Jim Van Delly from Michigan. Last time I talked to him was in the 1980's when he was a history teacher in the Arlington, VA school district. Believe it or not I still have a color Cobra drawing and my USAFSS patch. I remember the Cobra Den, the Pink Elephant, baluts and those trigger happy PCs. I was also in the 6948th at Goodbuddy from January 1964 to July 1965. I spent 1963 at FSI's Intensive Thai Language Program in Arlington. Hope to hear from others there at the same time.

First and last time I ever ate a Balute, was at their establishment, proceeded by about 3 kegs of beer. Sometimes I can still taste it. I still email Dick Coffina, (great guy) bowled on our championship bowling team. And Jerry Brake. What a guy to help make the long hours go quick. and Rabbit and Rat and Caldwell and all the rest of you guys. Give me an email or call -- 601-796-5717. Suffered through Katrina, (we live just 30 miles north of the gulf) but still kicking. One of my most proud moments, was when I won Champ of the week at the bowling alley. I beat a man by the name of Bill Peirce. He was a great bowler, and I was just a hack, but that was my day and I won. Well, I just wanted to let you know that I was proud to live and work with the heros of our time. God Bless you all -- you earned it.

I was at Keesler 1966 and then on to Kelly AFB for about 6 months and then on to the fantastic Hakata Admin Annex, Japan, 6918th SS Dawg flight, and then left Japan in May 1968 and headed to the LOVELY vacation spot located in Peshawar Pakistan and known as the 6937th! (Charlie Flight) Almost stayed long enough to shut the place down, but left in November 1969, and left the Air Force. CONGRATS on a wonderful website. The USAFSS was, in my opinion the best assignment ever, and even though I still sometimes hear those damn dots and dashes, I enjoyed it all. Anyone that was where I was during those times, please email. I would love to hear from you and swap a few lies......

Comments:Just wandering through and saw a lot a great comments about eveyone and things that everyone like to read about. Had a great time in Crete and of course all of the other places I was stationed at. Met a lot of great guys, but old age is starting to fade little by little. I belong to the Misawa Site and have attended their reunions for the last three years and they are a great inspiration to this old mind and brings back a lot of memories of the good times. Over all I've been very lucky to have been assigned into the USAFSS and got to be part of an elite group of great people.
