| Comments: | i'm very new to the worship of Maa Kali.it was in fact my 19 year old i'd like to think very wise son that brought the Mothers attention onto me and the rest of my children.you see,and i'll try to make this as quick as i possibly can.when i was 13,(i'm now 37),i stupid idly delved in head first i may add to the very black arts.in 3 months time i had a "familiar" of my own and with him i accomplished alot..or so i thought i did.i will not be mentioning his name for now because it's only been 4 days since his full departure.after so many years my familiar which later on down the road was no stranger to my family,my mothers side to be exact.he's been involved with some of these women for centuries.i know it sounds like something out of a bad movie but i swear it isn't and at times i wish it was a bad movie.well you need to remember that this "familiar" has been following me around for the past 25 years and I've dumbly allowed him to interfere with all of my children s lives thinking it was safe. it was eldest son that broke this 25 year bond and brought us to a better way of life and worship! had it not been for Maa Kali i just don't know what we would've of become....there is os much more to this story but this is the smallest i could get it..thank-you for allowing me to tell a little bit about me... | Comments: | I am from Delhi and was visiting Kolkata on a pilgrimage trip to Kalighat Temple along with my Guruji and friends.
We did eventually got the darshan (mataji was gracious enough to allow us in) but the experience from the main gate to the holy shrine was really horrific. It was like a gundaraj of local pandas who were not leaving any opportunity to extract money from the devotees. They would not allow to have proper darshan and instead find out ways / force people to pay money…could be for puja or to jump the line etc...infact my guruji was asked to pay 28000Rs for puja. Not just that, there was no mercy shown towards the devotees including woman & children who were being crushed in the crowd. There's no administration and people just pile on each other. Last but not the least, the temple and it’s surrounding is full of filth, there's no cleanliness and it is a sorry state to see Matarani sitting amidst all. It’s a shame on us that we are keeping our maiyaa rani in an environment where one wouldn’t even stand for more than a minute. I have a small request, we need to get together and fight for human right and bring in some administration with lot of discipline. These pandas / touts needs to go. I believe the government needs to take an active control and take action in the interest of people. Can someone help reach out to Mamtaji...I believe she would listen? Please help instill the faith back in common people and visitors who will surely enjoy coming back to the shrine and Kolkata time and again. |

fall as a prey to the pandas. Don't listen to them. Go in a general queue and offer twenty to fifty rupees and have nice darshan. I was also cheated by the middlemen two times and they pull out the money from your hand. But onething is sure. Whenever u visit the temple,and come back home, u will get some good news or gifts. I request the authorities to introduce some proper ticket system, so that everybody will have a pleasant and nice darshan. Jai Kali Maa!!! |

| Comments: | Recently I was reading a manuscript written in 1910 by one of my ancestors. In that manuscript it was mentioned that the golden Mundamala of Ma (Kalighat) as donated by one of my ancestors called Ramdhan Sarkar, possible in the 2nd half of 17th century. He was one of the revenue collectors in the Bikrampur region(Banglades) and used to live in Bagra village in Bikrampur. It was also written in that manuscript that this was confirmd by my another ancestor Called Dinanath Sarkar in 1875.

| Comments: | i hv always been curious about MAA KALI. on my first visit to Kolkata and the Kalighat temple i got a quick but satisfactory darshan by the help of dalals. a priest prayed in one corner of the temple asking for Rs 2,100. i first took out Rs 100, but he persisted, so i gave him the whole amount he'd asked for. tho my uncle who was taken in another corner was smarter and shelved Rs 1,100. while both of us were praying with the panda, someone suddenly appeared saying he'd rcvd so much amout, to the panda, which shook my cool. without asking my desire the 'priest' started blessing me with a long married life and a son, which i refuted. then i was taken to another corner where i was asked to pray quietly, which i finally could tho for few secaonds only. however they kept asking me if i was happy. i said yes, as anyone would be in the godesse's abode/temple.
surely the touts do mesmirize you and they are good at it but you offer the cash in faith and goodwill for your family. and if that's heard by MAA its enough. |

| Comments: | I have had translated to English, three Sanskrit texts of devotion to Ma Kali: Praise and Apology to Goddess Mahakali, Kali Chalisa, and Kali Aarti. I will send them for free, to any devotee who would like a copy. They are now in both Sanskrit and English.
It was impossible to find a translation of these texts anywhere, so I spent much time locating a brahmin in India who is both a translator and a devotee, asking him to please do these translations for the glory of Kali Ma, and then sponsoring his time to do so over a couple of months. He kept only what funds he needed for his livelihood, and donated the rest to temples. I am pleading with him to next please translate a short devotional text to Mother Kali written by Shankaracharya. I hope to have that completed within the next month or two. JAI MAA KAALI |

I am a Kalibhakta from Finland, and I am planning to visit the Temple in the near future. I am residing at he moment in Tiruvannamalai. I have had several, most powerful experiences of Maa Kali. She is not only in India, She is in Finland too! and her true dwelling place is in our hearts. Sad to hear about the condition in the temple. I have some ideas for improvement, and I wish that many people would start discussing openly about the matter: I think that in some respects we should imitate fellow Catholic Christians who keep always their churches clean, and who accompany their worship with beautiful choir music, making the atmosphere solemn and devout. In that atmosphere there is no room for beggars etc. I was formerly a Catholic Christian, and there is something in it, which I still miss in the Hindu temples. When I go some of the many temples of India, the same question arises in my mind: where is the music and dance??? Sometimes in the temples you can hear pandits reciting Vedas or you can hear some studio-generated music ringing as a playback from a cd. But I think that is not enough for transforming culturally a "market place" into a most holy place. We need something which fills the space with divine vibration. I am a composer of Hindu music, and the choir is my instrument. I have music for several Kalimantras, and for the Thousand names of Kali. I have also music for the mantras for the 9 planets.In a local Kali temple the pujari and his frends liked it very much, and they even played it in the temple as a playback. My dream would be to perform this music in the Kalighat Temple. It is very mystical and majestic music. I believe that it could transform the atmosphere in the temple completely. But I would need the permission from the temple and some good singers, and perhaps even dancers to perform it. I have heard that Kalighat is good place for new experimental ideas. | Comments: | Some of my fondest memories of Kolkata are the pujas I gave at Dakshineswar, Kalighat, and Addapith.
Many people complain about the hustle of Kalighat, but it is a magical place and really has it's own unique charm. I used to visit almost every week and the whole experience changes once you become familiar with the location and the people. I never got cheated or harassed at Kalighat after I began to speak Bengali. Even though it may be a very face-paced temple, once I understood the workings of it I was able to go and experience the peace that I desired. I love Kalighat--JAY MA KALI! |

| Comments: | I reached at kalighat on a hot and humid afternoon. The moment i arrived near the Kali Temple i was approached by numerous hawker priests (A special kind of priest stand near most of the Indian Temples and try to persuade people use their service with hefty fees). Now i was approached by several of them on my way to the Kali temple, until now i have successfully avoided them. But finally when i reached at the temple i was trapped by one of the temple priest, who promised me to use his service for 51 rupees (Now you may ask why 51 rupees, because Hindus generally offer odd numbers to their God, that's why you could offer 11, 21, 21 501 etc amount of money to God).
Now the priest took me to a mithai shop (A shop which sells several offering which can be offered to the God) asked me to remove my shoes and keep in the safe custody of mithai wallh. The temple authority have not bothered to put up a shoe stand near the temple, so many devotees coming from far off places like me often fall prey to these illegal priests and mithai wallahs near the temple. After keeping my shoes at the shop, he asked me to buy offering from the shop, when i said i was not interested in buying sweets from the shop, the priest told me that in that case the shop keeper would not allow me to keep my shoes inside his shop. There i was forced to buy sweet from that shop only. He asked me to buy 51 rupees of sweets for the God, after bargaining for sweets for few minutes with the shop keeper, he agreed to give me sweets in just 11 rupees. He led to another shop to buy flowers and colours for God for 21 rupees. Now we are on our way to offer prayer to God. There were lots of people patiently waiting in the queues to see God. I wished i could not have trapped by the temple priest and i would rather wait outside until my turn to see God. Anyway, we went near the main temple, the priest told wait little behind the door, then the priest went and talked to a police, who was guarding at the temple gate. The priest then came out after his talk with police and asked me to give him 10 rupees. I gave him 10 rupees which he quickly delivered to the police man. The police man then let us go inside the temple. The temple was very congested and it is the worst managed temple of India. There were no queueing inside the temple. Although there were 20 people inside the temple i felt like breathless because lack of space inside the temple. People push each other freely within the temple. There were many women and children inside the temple but people do not care about anything. It looked like it was fun in creating chaos inside the temple. The priest told me stand aside and asked me to rush when they open the temple door. In the mean time he said some prayers and asked me to repeat and then he got red colour from the temple wall and painted the colour on my forehead. I waited nearly 10 minutes after that i rushed in to see God and after standing in the hassle bustle for 5 minutes i decided to leave. The priest then took me to another place and introduced me to his Guru. Now everything here is very well managed to cheat foreigners. As soon as stand near Guru, an old man came and told him that the man which Guru blessed earlier has given him 501 rupees. He handed over the money to Guru. Guru asked me my name and offered a prayer to my name and asked me to repeat after him. Then he asked me touch the dirt and told me that it was the sacred earth of Mother Kali (the Goddess). After the brief puja with Guru, he asked me to pay Daskhina (Money for Blessing) of 501 rupees. Here again after little bargaining i paid him 100 rupees. Then we returned from the temple, oh yes on my way back some one gave me a sacred thread and i paid him 2 rupees. We went to the shop, the priest asked me to pay 10 rupees to the lady for safe keeping my shoes, but i paid him 5 rupees. It was the time to pay the priest and head for home. The priest now told me that his charge was 101 rupees but again after bargaining for few minutes, i pissed off after paying him 51 rupees and promised myself not to pay any single penny in any indian temple. Everyone is corrupted in this place called Kalighat in Calcutta (Kolkata) India. So my advice is don't go to Kalighat temple unless you know what exactly you would be doing there. And always avoid illegal priests at the temple. The places like Kalighat are infested with corrupt individual in India, beware of these people before you make your trip to these places. At Kalighat, when I expressed even a slight interest, the very friendly devotees hurried me onto into the crowd so that I could walk past and take the goddess's darshan. Since I had a special scholarly interest in Kali, I was very grateful. But beyond that, I was deeply touched by the open-hearted welcome of the devotees. It remains one of my most treasured memories of India. |
