More photos, as promised:

Another close-up of my mask. Although it's hard to tell, there really are four faces. Maybe I can upload a video showing how it looks when I spin around...

Me again.

Small group shot-- From left: Gretel as the "Morton Salt" girl, PJ as a Corporate Dickhead, myself as the Four-headed Geisha, Coleman (hiding in the back) as The Internet (i.e. a "series of tubes"), Arielle (kneeling in front) as a Leopard-Bear, and Shawn as the Gas-mask Guy.

Gretel, in all her Morton Salt glory.

Coleman, flexing his tubes of the Internet.

Halloween photos!

This year I was a little art-ed out after a big photo show I had in September. I had a bunch of grand ideas that I wanted to do this year but my energy level was all but depleted. Instead of doing an entire outfit this year, I decided to make a headpiece that would serve as the main costume (a la my Medusa piece from a few years ago, scroll down for pics). Originally I had planned to make a gold Fu Dog head... which would have looked pretty awesome but when I started making it I had an epiphany: This is really not going to be fun to wear at all...

Sooo, after some swearing and more procrastinating, I decided to come up with something a little more abstract and just hope it would at least look cool and/or creepy. I guess I'd call it a Four-headed Geisha mask... I think it worked! I tied for first place at a costume contest at a friend's annual party which was super cool, but even better was that my costume freaked everyone out everywhere I went the entire night. So much fun! I have a couple of pics below, but there are more to come. Plus, as long as it doesn't rain, I am going to finally attend the annual Halloween Parade on Halsted on Wednesday. It should prove to be a feast for the eyes, so I will be sure to take many pictures there as well. Also I took a lot of 'production' shots of the Geisha mask and will post a tutorial soon. Enjoy!

A photobooth shoot at a local dive, Rainbo, with my favoritest ladies, Gretel and Arielle.

Myself and my boyfriend PJ (he's a Corporate Dickhead, haha).

More photos to come!

Medusa Headdress Instructions

Every Halloween season I tend to get a few friendly emails about my costumes and questions about how I made them. By far, of all the things I have on this site, the number one thing people want to know how to make is the Medusa headdress (scroll down for pictures). I try to email the instructions when I can, but inevitably sometimes I am busy and don't get a chance (or forget) to respond. I am posting the instructions here for easy reference. It will be too late to make one for this Halloween, but at least you'll have the info for next year.

ok, here goes... and good luck! send me a picture if you decide to make one :D

Medusa instructions:

I started with an old hat that fit me comfortably and cut the brim off so it was just a scull-cap sort of thing (I might recommend possibly using a light kind of hard-hat or helmet instead of a soft hat because i found that the hat shrunk a little after everything dried and afterwards it was a little too tight... or maybe if you get a soft hat that is a size or two too big it would fit when it shrinks...?). Then I took some heavy-duty wire and cut several pieces about arms-length. I wrapped the wires with newspaper to my desired thickness. These were to be the snakes, so I formed little paper heads at one end and a tapered tail at the other (I also used masking tape to keep the newspaper on, but dont use too much tape or you may have problems getting the paper mache to stick to it later). The paper snakes are bendable because of the wire, so I twisted them into snake-y positions and wired them to the skullcap base. I used cardboard that I attached to the skull cap for the "widow's peak" at the forehead.

then I paper-mache'd over everything to make it a uniform whole (I just used newspaper strips and slightly diluted elmer's glue-- I dont trust the flour-and-water paste for headgear! haha). It was looking good, but I wanted it to be sturdier. Here's my mistake: I used plaster strips (like the ones used for casts) to cover over the paper mache. It worked great to make it sturdier, but it was way too heavy (Duh! note to self: plaster is heavy!). I realized when I wore it out on Halloween that it put so much strain on my neck that I could only wear it for 20 minutes at a time because I was in so much pain. I would definitely tell you to just stick with the newpaper and glue-- it's much lighter!

I also used this stuff called Paperclay that you can buy from an art store. It's a little pricey, but a little goes along way. You get it wet and it becomes like a mushy clay that dries as paper. I used it to fill in and smooth out any rough edges as well as to shape and sculpt the heads a little better, etc. After everything was dry and shaped the way I wanted it, I spray-painted it green (I found that it had too many hard-to-reach crevices inbetween the snakes to be able to paint it with a brush, so the spray paint worked like a charm). I also cut a stencil for a snake-scale pattern that I spray painted onto the snakes with a lighter green color. The rest was just decorative stuff (aka: the fun part)-- I added some glitter to the scales and added gold eyes and red tongues to the snakes. :)

Hope that helps!
love,
sarah

Upcoming shows!

We got the ball rolling early this year and the snowball effect has been nothing less than fantastic! I just found out that one of my photos has been accepted into the 2nd Annual Photo Competition at Morpho Gallery. :D This year's theme is "Metamorphosis". Please join me and the rest of the 'semi-finalists' at the opening reception on Friday, April 20th from 6pm til 11pm. The winner gets a week-long solo show completely sponsored by the gallery, so wish me luck!

Be sure to mark this Friday the 13th on your calendar as well-- it's our second collaborative art show, "Paraskavedekatriaphobia!". You can learn more about our art group as well as check out some images from our past show on our website:
http://www.deadlineprojects.com

The last one had such a huge turnout and we are hoping for an even bigger show this time around, so be sure to join us for an evening of superstitious art!

hi ;) I hope you all had a fantastic New Year-- in case you didn't know already, 2007 is the year we finally do the things we say we are going to do... so get motivated!

I've started the ball rolling and finally published my online photo-journal at http://www.thisisforyou.net. This year I'm planning to focus more on enhancing my knowledge and productivity in digital photography (so I've bought a few new accessories for my SLR to boost my motivation on that, haha). I'm hoping to update the photo-journal fairly regularly, so please check it out and bookmark it!

OK! long awaited Halloween pictures... Apologies for the blurry photos-- it turned out that the batteries in my boyfriend's camera were dying. But you can get the idea anyway. We successfully pulled off the centaur-family costume! Maybe too successfully.... a couple of girls got a little too drunk and thought they could ride us! I'm still unsure how the crazy girl with the blond braids catapulted herself onto me, but she totally broke the legs of my horse-ass... :( oh well, it was fun while it lasted. For you crafty-types: we built wood frames for the horse legs (to which we attached wheels), stapled and shaped chicken-wire to form the bodies, and then paper-mached over the chicken wire. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the horse-asses were completely covered in brown fleece, so they were extra soft and supple! Plus the tails were long flowing ponytails of synthetic weave-hair. oh, and my centaur-baby was also my purse!(there was a zipper in it's belly). I also made my sister a mermaid costume, so I'll be posting pics of her very soon!
p.s. That's my friend Gretel with her paper-mache sugar-skull-inspired head in the last photo :D

hey, by-the-way, I'm on myspace now, like everyone else in the known universe, so now you can keep up with my latest goings-ons via myspace as well:http://www.myspace.com/miss_sarahperez

also, I've got a piece that will be displayed and auctioned off this Saturday. Here's the info:

You like art. You like skateboards. You like art on skateboards. Perfect!

This Saturday, artist-designed decks will be auctioned off to benefit the Save-A-Pet organization. I made a deck that will be auctioned at this event, so if you get the chance you should stop by and check it out!

OK, the catch: the event is in Elgin.. But no worries-- either hop on the Metra or carpool it out to Elgin to join us for a fun time. Come to buy some good art for a good cause or just come to see the art, hang out with good people, and show your support. I'll be there on Saturday, so be sure to say hi if you go! :-D

10/03/06-- it's official, i'm old, haha. i'm 27 today. whatever, it's good to be alive ;)

i've always been bad with journaling regularly, so i guess the same goes with this blog. i thought maybe i could stand to post a new little update, so here goes:

1) I have a piece hanging up downtown on State Street, right across from Marshall Fields (aka Macy's). It's part of the you-are-beautiful project involving a bunch of other local artists. It's pretty cool! Mine is the 'M' in the Filipino translation. I worked with a Filipino tattoo artist from the Tatak Ng Apat Na Alon Tribe to decorate the piece with the sacred symbols found in the ancient art of Filipino tattoos. Check it out!

2) Halloween is coming! and I've already started working on this year's costume(s)... (((drum roll)))... my boyfriend and are going to be centaurs..! I'm building some horse asses right now, haha.

3) Friday the 13th is in October this year! My good friends know that I watch scary movies every Friday the 13th, so this year is gonna be extra special! I'm hosting another horror-movie marathon, so my friends should email me for details :)

4) I have a piece in a show at my friend Kim's place this weekend. Details are below. I'm showing my most recent work-- I haven't titled it yet, but I'd describe it as taxidermied shoes... haha Hope to see you there!

HEY! yes I'm still alive. Between work and homelife I've been a busy busy bee, but now I'm hooked up to the internet at home again (x-mas present to myself) so I'll be able to post more often. Hopefully over the next few months I'll be able to give this site a bit of a facelift and add some new work. In the meantime, here's something funny.

ok, so I added the "JESUS ELMO LOVES YOU!" part. But isn't this graphic bizarre?? It's actually from a disassembled paper party cup from a set that I got at the dollar store (hell yeah, you know I got the matching party napkins too). why does Elmo look like a prophet? does Elmo regularly give subliminal religious messages?? I feel that this may require further investigation. Perhaps Sesame Street is using religous messages to counteract the Disney pink triangles...?

(yes, i'm just being silly :-P)

Hi :) I hope your Halloween was fun-- mine was too, but this year i totally forgot to bring my camera! And I went out with the boys this year instead of with the girls, and none of the boys brought along a camera either. oh well! my costume came out great though. when i get some extra time I will take some supplemental photos in my get-up for documentation purposes.

in the meantime, check out this photo of another Medusa headpiece that was inspired by mine...! I got an email asking for some info on how I made my piece, so I emailed back with some instructions. I was pleasantly surprised to get an email the other day with a pic of the finished piece: a medusa helmet for her daughter's Halloween costume. Thanks for the photo, Sandra--it came out awesome!

wow, time has been flying by lately. I've been busy working on some projects (and I just found out that the next DEPART-ment is coming up in October.. I think on the 7th, 8th and 9th). And Halloween.. don't even get me started. I don't have an idea yet for my costume, so if you've got a good one you should email it to me. Anyways, work is hella busy but I thought I'd stop in and say hello. I'll leave you with two things:
1. You need to read "The Art of Loving" by Eric Fromm. My friend Guillermo recommended it to me and I read it a few weeks ago. Its not a self-help book, even though the title sounds like it should be. Its really more psychology based-- very insightful and poignant.
2. Just for fun-- check out some old pictures that I forgot I uploaded to my server years ago (I dressed up as Madonna for an 8o's themed party):

Well DEPART-ment at Intonation was a success-- a big thanks to all who braved the heat (and spent some dough) :) The place was packed and I know we sold alot of great creative wares. I heard that the music was pretty good too ;)

I am a little disheartened by how much was stolen though. I knew it was bound to happen because of the volume of people versus the kind of security we had, but there is just something really low about stealing hand-made things from honest starving artists that live and work just like you do. Not that it's any better to steal from Wal-mart, but if you steal from DEPART-ment you should know that you are ripping off an actual person, not some corporate money-maker. I'm not upset about losing money. More-so I just feel kinda disappointed about my peers. Maybe you didn't know what DEPART-ment was all about, maybe you didn't realize you were stealing from real people. So then I'd just like to remind you that DEPART-ment is all about the artists involved. The artists that participate have spent real hours as well as real blood-sweat-and-tears making the items they sell.

Anyhoo, I know we got the word out about DEPART-ment to a whole new and diverse crowd at Intonation, so hopefully we'll see some of you at our next sale :)

07/14/05

Hey guys, last minute note: DEPART-ment is having a booth at the Intonation Music Festival this weekend at Union Park. You should look for us if you are going-- as always there will be tons of great stuff and I have made a plethora of leather journals and candles and leather bracelets. And don't forget that 90% of the purchase price goes directly to the artist who made it, so you can feel good about yourself for supporting the arts whenever you buy something from us. Have a great weekend!

May 21st, 2005

good morning ;) well this DEPART-ment was even better than the last one, so I hope some of you got to check it out. They've been advertising more and they keep attracting new artists, so if you didn't make it to this one be sure to catch the next one!

on a different note, I recently went to see "Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation" which was AMAZING. Back in the good ol' eighties when the original Indiana Jones movie first came out, three 12 year old kids fell in love with the movie so much that they decided to film their own version. These seriously ambitious kids studied the movie backwards and forwards to reenact a shot-by-shot remake. It took them 7 years and five thousand dollars to complete. Never intended for any type of public release, many years later (through a 'six degrees of separation' type of thing) a copy of the "Adaptation" fell into Steven Spielberg's hands. He loved it, and sent them a letter of recognition.

Now, twenty years after their film was born, the 'kids' (now all grown up, of course) show the film at colleges all around the United States as a motivational and inspirational thing for future filmmakers. The film quality is awful (think about the old-school camcorders we had in the eighties) and many of the scenes are laughable, but the kids are endearing, charming, and inspiring. Anyone who loved the Indiana Jones movie will quickly get into their version, and will appreciate the complete attention to detail that these kids produced. I thought this movie would be good for a laugh, but I came away in awe of what a little spark of motivation created in a few kids and how they followed through, even to the tiniest details. They had costumes and scenes set up as identical as 12-year-old kids could possibly create them. It's really an amazing thing to see, and it sort of reminds you of that feeling like nothing is impossible that you had when you were that age. You can't purchase this movie anywhere and it won't be shown in any theaters (due to copyright infringement reasons) so if you hear that it is playing at a school near you- I highly recommend it. In fact, you should just convince your school to book a showing with them. You can get more info about it here

Save your moola and come by the Open End gallery space May 6th, 7th, and 8th (just in time to get your mama something nice-- mother's day is the 8th!). I'm selling some really great stuff this time around: hand-poured candles inside of vintage *ultra-kitschy* beer cans, leather bracelet cuffs recycled from old leather belts, leather journals, the 'ex-boyfriend' books, some new cards, and maybe some new random artwork..?!? Hope to see you there!

Feb. 12th, 2005

Yeah, so I've been hibernating this winter :) I feel bad I've been neglecting this site, but it's amazing how time just seems to slip by. It's 2005-- how messed up is that? I had a real wake-up call this New Years, since it marked the four-years-since-I-graduated-college thing. Whoa. How the hell did that happen? It feels like it was only yesterday. So it's a natural re-evaluation period then, and I've been caught in that headtrip about the meaning of life and the fact that we are all going to die and that I should live for today because who knows how long I have on this earth. I think my resolution is to make more out of each day, and work towards really being happy, because I when I die I want to be satisfied that I enjoyed the life I had, you know? People get so caught up in trying to be successful, working hard now to reap the rewards years later, being stressed and unhappy. I am on a quest to find out how to be happy and survive stressfree in America. I'll let you know how it goes :)

Nov. 29th, 2004

Come and support the arts (by buying my merchandise!) this weekend--> The winter DEPART-ment art sale is going on Dec. 3rd, 4th and 5th down at Open-End Gallery, 2000 W Fulton *310. Friday night doors open at 7pm and close at 11pm, drinks and snacks and a party atmosphere! The good (and inexpensive)stuff tends to sell out fast, so I would strongly suggest stopping by the opening on Friday to peruse the selection early. Saturday and Sunday we'll be open from 11am until 5pm. DEPART-ment is a one-stop shop for all hand-made gifts created by local artists. Your money goes directly to the artists involved. Show your support and get some Christmas shopping done at the same time! See you there :)

Yay! This year's Halloween costume was the best ever! I was pretty pleased with it, and I got tons of good reactions. I did run out of time to make everything I had planned (things my costume is missing: a real crown, the snakes on the aura behind my head, and I am supposed to be holding a conch shell, a staff/wand sort of object, and a lotus flower). BUT I think the idea came across beautifully regardless. Enjoy the photos!

Halloween is almost here!!! I am working around the clock on my costume. It's coming out great! Halloween is coming! And I finally know what I am going to be this year. OKay, I am going to be dressed up as Vishnu, the Hindu god. I was debating back and forth whether to choose him because was/am really concerned about offending anyone (you know, since he is an important religious figure). But I am planning on doing the image as correctly as possible (although since I am a girl i will have to modify the outfit just a bit) and I have even gotten some really great body makeup to paint myself blue (his unearthly form has blue skin). I think it is going to come out great. I really just love religious icons and how beautiful they are depicted in all religions, so I hope no one will be offended by it. Anyway, I will definately post some pictures when I get them :)

Well for those of you without a fast connection, I apologize for the big pics, but it's worth the wait. July 9th, 2004

Hello everyone, it's been a long time since I've posted but worklife and homelife have taken their toll on me lately. The big news of late is that my fiance and I are parting ways, and I am moving into my own apartment in a week. Before you feel all bad for me, let me tell you that we are separating on good terms, in the hopes that maybe someday we could pick up where we left off. In the meantime, I am looking forward to spending some time working on new art, and I have big prospects of finally putting together a darkroom in this new apartment. Well, thats the news, and hopefully when I get settled in I will get some pictures posted of the new place. I am thinking I will not be getting internet access at home when I move in order to cut costs, but I have it at work now, so we will still be in touch. Thanks for your continued support :) Also, this weekend I am having a moving sale, today (Friday) the 9th and Saturday the 10th at 1030 N Winchester from 8:30 am to 3:00pm (possibly later if the weather allows)-- all women's clothes are 25 cents, unless otherwise marked. I've got tons of stuff to get rid of, and everything must go! Hope to see you there ;)

We have a winner for the snake name contest:

(This is a real pic of her, isn't she cute?)
Thanks to everyone who sent me names and congrats to John Pfeifer who sent the suggestion "Weinerdog." I didn't name my snake Weinerdog, but strangely enough that was one of the first name ideas I had come up with on my own before John emailed me. So John must be psychically in tune with my snake, and that deserves a prize. He will be getting something artsy in the mail from me sometime soon :)

I named my snake (who I have decided is a girl, based on some research and an educated guess) Sepia, but I tend to call her "SnakeyPoo" as a nickname. I know. I'm weird. Meanwhile, things here have been busy and work is hectic but Chicago is warming up and new projects are in motion. Its gorgeous out today and I'm feeling that creative itch pulling me away from the computer, so off I go. More later :)

I need more snake names! email them to me.

I just got back from visiting my friend Kelcey in D.C. and I had a great time. It's a beautiful place and I was in need of a minivacation. We marched in the pro-choice rally and it was amazing-- thousands and thousands of people showed up to march. But I'm beat and not looking forward to work tomorrow. so it goes. hopefully I will get my pics developed tomorrow!

Hey, mail out your taxes, you slackers

ok, I'm totally obsessed with looking up care info on cornsnakes. I love my little baby corn! I really need a name for him though. I'm going to try out a little experiment here... I'm going to take some name suggestions via email and if I choose one of the names you suggest I'll send you some sort of cool artsy thing in the mail (not sure how international shipping will be but I'll try to work that out). If I don't pick any of the suggested names, I'll atleast send something to whoever suggested the funniest or most creative name. So if you have a moment send me your name ideas in an email and don't forget to give me your email so I can contact you if I choose your name. Thanks for the help!

Yay! This is what my new baby looks like (this is a photo courtesy of this website, so it's not actually my snake but this is exactly what he looks like):

Isn't he great?! He was scared at first, understandably, but he let me handle him later on and he seems really sweet. He was fed yesterday so I'll get to try my hand at feeding him on Wednesday. I love him! Now I have to think of a name (and I don't really know if "he" is a boy or girl...)

Happy Easter!

Unfortunately I'm not eating carbs this month so I won't be enjoying my yearly tradition of frozen peeps (you thought those things were good for nothing? try freezing them-- seriously they actually taste good that way! they dont quite freeze... they just get really chewy and cold). But whats even better is that yesterday I found an aquarium that someone was throwing out and I am going to the pet store today to see about getting a snake! I read up on them and I want to get a corn snake. I called around and one of the PetCo's around here has 5 different ones-- and they're actually open today. Weird, huh? I'll update more later-- and maybe I'll have a picture of my new snake!!

It's been awhile since I've had time to write-- work has been hectic and my artmaking has slowed down a bit. As you can see I had a bit of fun with adobe today and changed the look of this page and the mainpage. I was supposed to do some more spring cleaning but the day got away from me today :) I will think of more to post later.

Hey, it's St. Patricks Day

I found out that the show will open on March 24th at Gallery205 at Radford University in Radford, Virginia and will be up until the beginning of April. I've got three pieces in the show-- two experimental abstract sculpture things and a work of two racy mini-polaroids embedded in an old 1941 sexual education book. heehee.

Oops! I forgot to change my email addy with my domain registrar so I never got the notices that it was expiring. Anyhoo, Its taken care of and the site is back online :) The Crowing Glory show went well, thanks to all who came to see it! And I'm very sorry to anyone who couldn't get in to see the show. There was an overwhelming turnout and I don't think the Cultural Center people expected it. Some of the door ladies were exceptionally rude about it, even to me and my family. But other than that, the show seemed to go on without a hitch. I am currently working on some new projects, and if anyone is in Virginia my friend Logan is having a show at a university there (I'll post the details when I get them) and I will have a couple of pieces in the show. More later!

Hey, its leap year.
Here's a pic of the postcard for the show. Keep an eye out for it and pick one up!

Feb. 27th, 2004

March 10th at 6pm at the Cultural Center-- Don't forget! I have official postcards for the show too. Later this week I will be dropping some off at Quimby's and some other local places. My scanner isn't working otherwise I'd post it here, maybe I'll try to take a decent digipic of it later today :)

Things have been chilled out lately, thank goodness. I'm trying to get more in touch with my diet and health lately. It's time for a change, you know? I have to eat better, sleep more, and try to reduce some of my stress. Damn, I sound like I'm getting old, haha. I'm also looking to cleanhouse, literally. I think I am going to try to organize a day where I basically take 2/3rds of my stuff and put it in the kitchen and have an open house where people can come and take away whatever they want from it for free. what do you think?

Feb. 8th, 2004
So I made up a fake headshot yesterday and went to an open call for extras in the new Nicolas Cage movie "The Weatherman" which will be filming here in Chicago over the next few months. We'll see if I get a call back!

In other news, my headpiece for the Crowning Glory show is finished! I'm only giving you a teaser photo here because I really want you to come to the show-- It's going to be on March 10th (a Wednesday) at 6pm at the Chicago Cultural Center. I think its going to be a really good show. If you go because you read about it here, try to find me and say hello! I will post some more reminders about this event as it gets closer to March.

It's a winter wonderland today in Chicago. As if snow isn't annoying enough, I totally fell headfirst down an entire flight of stairs at work today. I'm sure if anyone had seen me it would have been a sight! Luckily I didn't break anything, but I banged up my leg pretty badly. What a dork, huh?

Anyway, I have finally broken through a huge creative block and my headwear piece is finally making some good progress. It was coming out nice before but it needed something and I was forcing the creative process. Its finally making me happy again and I'm looking forward to working on it some more tonight. I'm going to wait until it's finished to post some pics because I think it will be worth the wait :)

Meanwhile, you have to watch these cartoons here: www.billyblob.com They're so great!

I'm a busy busy bee, trying to work out the kinks in my headpiece project. I'll have pictures soon as it wraps itself up. I can't believe how fast this month is going! deadlines kinda suck, oh well. not much in my near future but some more work, maybe some margaritas, and definately some movie watching. Go see Big Fish if you haven't yet. it was cute and nice looking. But stay inside tomorrow, its going to be damn cold out, good hot chocolate with marshmallows weather. Okay, back to work!

I'm now faithfully working on my headpiece for the "Crowning Glory" show coming up in March. It's starting to look good-- I will try to post some pictures of the different stages soon. I am keeping my eyes open for innovative ways to create plumage... any ideas? email me

Phew! It's been a busy few weeks for me :) Plus I'm getting ready for new year's eve-- my friend Logan is throwing a "Plush Party" extravaganza... you have to be dressed as a furry animal or you can't get in. I've got a pimped out sexy cat costume in the works-- I'll be posting pics soon!

I have good news! i just found out that i got into the "Crown" headwear show at the Chicago Cultural Center in spring of 2004. yay :) i guess they are going to have an exhibit of authentic hats, crowns, and headdresses from different cultures of the world and the "crown" show is going to be a complimentary exhibit with culturally-inspired headwear made by artists. i submitted a couple
of designs and they said they loved them, woohoo :) i don't really know much more about it but i'm excited and ready to get to work on my pieces! I'll fill ya'll in on the info when i get it :)

Man, I've been kinda busy lately. It gets hard to balance work with art sometimes, ya know? Oh well. I just got a membership to a health club a few days ago and I'm pretty excited about it. This place is great-- it's called X-sport and it's located in Piper's Alley in Old Town. It's almost brand new and the day-spa is still being built. It has a pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna, rock climbing, tanning, and shitload of machines. All the treadmills have their own personal cable tv's and they have alot of interesting classes (membership is really cheap right now, so if you are interested I say check it out). Michael and I went yesterday for our first workout and it felt great. We hit the hot tub later and I went into a sauna for the first time ever. I can't wait for the day-spa to open up. We are going back tonight-- hopefully I can lose these ten pounds that don't seem to want to leave me, haha. Other than that, not much going on here.

How was your Halloween? Mine was okay, the parties were kind of a bust but our costumes went well. Here is a mini photo essay of the night:

This is my fiancee in the costume I made him. He is Lo Pan from the movie Big Trouble in Little China!

This is us, I think I blinked.

Why do I look scared here? haha. From left, me, Laura, Kelcey, and Amy. Kelcey and Amy flew in from MD for Halloween.

These are the Mexicandies we handed out all night. from left, a fizzy soda pop, some weird gooey stuff on a spoon, a spicy chicken pop, and a fizzy beer pop.

It's done! it doesn't show up as well in this photo, but the snakes are all glittery, have gold eyes, and red tongues! I realized that it was squishing my brain though, but a quick solution saved the day-- i shoved a shoulder-pad in the "helmet" to cushion my poor head. it works and now its comfy, yay :)

Tonite is the nite-- Lumpen fundraiser party at Buddy, 1542 N Milwaukee Ave, 2nd floor. $10 bucks to get in, film showings start at 8pm, party starts at 10pm.

I went to the Simon and Garfunkel concert last night at the United Center with my mom and my aunt. It was really awesome. It's amazing how great their voices still sound after so many years. They prefaced a song with "The last time we played this song in concert was in 1967." Wow. I know alot of people my age might not care for them, but their songs are so representative of their time. I can't even describe it without sounding like a hippie, haha, which I am so not! It was just really great, and I think it's safe to say this will be their last tour. There will be an encore concert on Sunday because this concert sold out so fast. For some of us it will have been a once-in-a-lifetime event. Have fun, to whoever is going on Sunday. You won't be disappointed.

Elliott Smith is dead. He supposedly killed himself yesterday by stabbing himself in the chest. He was my favorite musician, so I'm not sure how to take this. I'm upset, understandably, but it seems like such a surreal thing. Stabbed himself in the chest? That's strange. He will be missed by alot of people though-- how could things be that bad when people all around the world love you? In the words of someone I used to know, "Well, I hope you're happy." He was a great talent, but also maybe another example of how true artists are tortured souls. Rest in peace, Elliott.

Oct. 19th, 2003
The independent film last night, "Nitwit", by Xan Price was THE WORST excuse for art I've ever seen. I'm sorry I even recommended it here-- I seriously had no idea it was going to be so awful. I'm also sorry to/for anyone who enjoyed it (I'm sorry about THAT on so many levels). My fiancée and I held our tongues during the Q&A after the show for two reasons: 1. to be polite, 2. out of sheer speechless-ness of that monstrosity of a movie. Words can't even describe how terrible it was. I have been robbed of two hours of my life that I will never get back, which is something I can't forgive. The movie itself was a self-gratification filled with badly portrayed fetish scenes and painfully drawn out sci-fi horror. The strange, almost redeemable, random quality to the weirdness was ruined by undecipherable, poorly conceived scenes and the addition of an outer-space conflict turned juvenile when the resolution was to rip the lead actress "a new butthole." I would have enjoyed watching the filmmaker masturbate more than watching his film-- it would have been quicker and would have amounted to the same thing. It's amazing how many lunatics avoid being locked up by using the guise of being an "artist."

I know what you're thinking-- "C'mon, Sarah, tell us what you really think." Haha, I can't help it. I didn't get a chance to tell my opinion last night because I didn't want to offend anyone who actually liked it. I can appreciate bad art, and I know alot of work went into making the film. But to make other people sit through something that bad for that long is something else.

On a lighter note, I have today off and I am going to start sewing up some Halloween-costume action. My fiancée and I have Halloween off of work and I think we are going to get dressed up early and walk around downtown, do some shopping maybe, haha. Maybe we'll give out candy or something. We'll see :)

Two upcoming events in the Chicagoland area:

Saturday
October 18th
Showing of some "bizarre" film by Xan Price. Visit www.heavengallery.com for details. Admission is $7, show starts at 9pm. I'm not sure I'm going to go to this but it sounds cool(I'm poor and 7 bucks to see art is kinda expensive, haha, plus I'm saving my money for the next event.)

Saturday
October 25th
SAVE AMERICA!
This is a fundraising party for Lumpen, a local independant "underground" magazine that deals with local and national issues including art, politics, fashion, music, etc. But don't let the fundraising aspect scare you, it's only $10 to get in and atleast you know your money is going to a good cause and not padding someone's wallet :) There will be a pay-bar with cocktails (f.y.i.-- the invite doesn't specifically say no b.y.o.b. but they have been expressing this at most of their parties latey because of problems with people throwing bottles off the roof). There will be showings of some independant films, political-remix karaoke, plus you'll get a free copy of the new Select magazine (the sister publication to Lumpen) just for paying admission. Event starts at 8pm. You can read more about this at www.lumpen.com I am definately going to this event. You should check it out, their parties always turn out pretty fun :)

Does anybody really celebrate Columbus Day? I had today off since I work at a bank (bank holidays totally rock), but it made me realize what a weird "holiday" it is. I can't complain though, I guess.

Halloween is coming! It's my favorite holiday. I love playing dress-up. I've finally decided that this year I am going to be Medusa and I am going to make a crazy wig of paper-mache snakes. I am going to make sure I take pictures of my halloween excursion and post them. My friend Logan was supposed to have a party but it has been canceled due to complications. Does anyone know of any good parties on Halloween? Email the info to me if you've got the scoop :)

I'd like to make a public apology to the guy driving the car that I ran out in front of today. I'd also like to say THANK YOU to him for braking. Yeah, seriously I almost got killed today, and it was my own stupid fault. Yikes. I was running late for work as usual and I was busy hurrying instead of looking where I was going. Anyway, yeah.

On the brighter side, my vacation starts in two weeks and my mom bought me a ticket to see Simon and Garfunkel with her on the 24th, yay! (hey, maybe Simon and Garfunkel sounds like old fogey music to you but it reminds me of when I was little, you know?)

here's a link to check out, its stupid but for some reason i keep going back:
