A month ago, i travelled with a Canadian delegation on the March of the Living. Though i swore i wouldnt, my mind has drifted away from remembering my experience to my utmost ability. Thank you for your recollections of your journey, for you have inspired me to record my own. Am Yisrael Chai. |

| Comments: | Hi Sara,
Like everyone said, thanks for sharing your experiences! It's been a long time since you put this website up, so not sure if you still check your guestbook. I also went to the MOTL in 1994, I'm originally from Mexico City, now living in Canada. When I went to the MOTL I went with the group from Israel (the Latin American subdivision because I spent a year in Israel before this trip)... Even though it was sad, I felt good seing your pictures and remembering what being 18 while on the MOTL felt like. The 1994 generation should get together and make a bigger website about the trip, with dairy entries and pictures per country... so we can all see that even though we might come from different countries now (South Africa, France, Australia, Mexico, Canada, etc.) there is something much greater that brings us together, BEING JEWISH!!! and for 15 days the heart of every jew that goes through the experiences of the MOTL beat and feel as one. Lets keep marching FOR life!!! Abe abrahamworno@hotmail.com |

We enjoyed your photographs. My wife and I are going on the March next month. I am a physician and my cousin Fred Guttman is rabbi in Greensboro SC who has taken groups on MOTL for many years. He has asked me to go along as the doctor and chaparone and my wife and I are really looking forward to it. Your sharing your photos and experience has helped us both. Bob and Julie |

| Comments: | Sara, what a beautiful tribute to those who have gone on before us. One of my grandfathers was Jewish and though I am Christian, my ties with the Jewish community have always been strong. When I was a very young child, I read the Diary of Anne Frank and have never been the same. I have read everything I could about the holocaust, with fascination, disgust and awe, never able to understand man's inhumanity to man, grateful to those who were able and willing to help those who were persecuted, heartbroken for those whose lives were lost and/or forever changed because of the atrocities.
Thank you for sharing your experience. While I will probably not get to Poland or Germany, I do hope to experience the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, sometime in the next few years. Your Dreambook is an inspiration. Shalom. |

I share with you and our extended family of Jew's from around the world both pride and joy at being part of such an life changing experience. I began my journey with questions ranging from How? Why? and where was G-d??? even is there a G-d??? My experiences with individuals , groups and survivors, helped me come away with a sense of healing,. and the understanding that although we have been the focus of many attemps thru history to eradicate us, we are still here, still thriving, still holing our shared values and our love of life, and family. |

Please go into the site. http://www.kaufmann.co.za/mike/myjourney/ Click on the painting to get in,then click on the right on each red line which are some writing and click on each photo to enlarge. I hope that you find this interesting and helpful. Kind regards, Mike Kaufmann Prologue ________ I went to Poland in April of 1995 on the March of the Living Tour. My intention was not to have an exhibition but to have photographs for my own use. I took along several cameras including black and white film, being the photographic medium of the time. There are a number of photographs that are out of focus for which I do not apologize, as it was difficult to focus through my tears. There were many pictures that I did not take like the barrack that was full of shoes that as I walked in I choked on the smell after 55 years, the barrack that was full of suitcases and the barrack that was full of children's toothbrushes and personal effects. These photographs are scanned from contacts. The exhibition photos were professionally done (some were redone a number of times) to get certain effects accentuated like darks darker and lights lighter and to try and create moods. These effects are not possible to produce on the computer monitor. The exhibition was held at the Albow Centre Cape Town , South Africa in April 1996 ,was 13m long and 2,7m high, and the background was painted black. I tried to create a feeling of the viewer being overwhelmed by the blackness and size and drawn in to the beauty and by the deception. The idea is, that each picture is in the order that the person who went into the camp, walked and saw what I saw. As you look at each picture try and imagine yourself walking through this camp not knowing what to expect next and in great conflict. The conflict being that as you entered the camp, there was a sign that said "Arbeid Macht Frei" (Work Makes You Free) and these bureaucrats, in and out of uniform, who are only doing their job and carrying out their orders, (which was to process your death) who view you as the scum of the earth, demanding your number(your name is irrelevant) etc. and recording this in a tome. (How much has changed?) While on the trip I asked many questions:Why? What is the same now as was then? What is different now? What makes the situation now that something like this cannot happen again? I have not yet found the answers. The level of deception, distortions, myths, the coverups ,the spin ,deception by omission and outright lies by the government, the media, corporations, organized religion, the scientific establishment, and others who want to keep the truth from us,is something that is so great the public has no clue as to what is really going on at any given time. "The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State." - Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels He Believed, was written in April 2000 to try and get some clue as to what my Grandfather may have thought at each year and to try and put an age to ourselves and those people who are dear to us who do things that we really do not understand why they do what they do and think what they think, when he only did what he felt to be right, only to be wrong! "The condition upon which God has given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break , servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt." John Philpott Curran 1750- 1817 I want to thank my family for their continuous support, Grant and Anthony and Gary who have made this presentation possible. http://www.kaufmann.co.za/mike/myjourney/ Thank You, Kind regards, Mike Kaufmann |

| Click here if you have been or plan to go on the March of the Living: | Dear Sara,
Your web site was beautiful. My daughter was on the 1990 March and I went in 1994. I trained with the Miami group and was assigned (as nurse chaperon) to the Boca/Broward group, on buses # 510, 511 and 512. Like you, I also feel that the March has changed my life. I look at things differently - we learned so much about the Holocaust, Judaism, Israel, the U.S. in which we were born and raised, and, most of all, about ourselves. The Shabbat in Poland in the hotel was one of the most incredible one in my life. They could never understand why we could sing and appear happy - what could they imagine about Shabbat? We were celebrating life - Am Yisrael Chai! I lost it at Majdanek, with the baby shoes. Having been through Hurricane Andrew, I was able to save my children's shoes. When I saw the baby shoes there, I thought about all the mothers who could not have their children's shoes, and more importantly, their children! My outstanding memory of the Wall was when they told us that when the world prays, we face Jerusalem, when we are in Jerusalem, we face the Wall, and when we are at the Wall, the whole world is facing us. When I mentioned to one of the bus captains that it would feel strange to go home, she said "Marilyn, we are home." Thank you for a beautiful site. Shalom -- Marilyn |

I was moved to tears and feel as though through your pictures and words, I was there with you. The March is such a beautiful way to honor those who were murdered as well as obtain first-hand information about the atrocities committed there. My father is a survivor, having lost two siblings in the Holocaust, so it's by the grace of G-d I'm here today. The March of the Living is something I will definitely remember when, hopefully, I have children old enough to participate. Thank you for sharing your experience. |
