| Comments: | Just commenting on your beta reading article. Having beta read a goodly number of times over the years, I have to agree with the points you've made, to a degree. On the Mary Sues, as much I usually despise and avoid them (I come from the Herc-Xena fandom where Mary Sues are a plague), there *have* been a few MS stories I've come across that were well worth reading, so it isn't always true that you should either not write it or just write an original story.
I wanted to add two words to your "often misused list." For some reason this mistake is cropping up more and more frequently: "yeah" and "yea," the first being a slang term for "yes" and the last being an almost solely legal term these days that rhymes with "nay." I'm not certain why so many authors are confusing the two but it's highly annoying. Also, there is another issue that becomes a real problem in the Buffy fandom, that is the American characters suddenly sounding British. It's fine for Spike or Giles to go around "ringing" someone or "arsing off" or "taking the piss" but most of us Americans never say anything remotely like that and don't have a clue what it means. So when Xander is suddenly saying he has to use the "lamp" or "torch" to get back to his "flat" and Willow is trying to "catch him up" or Buffy is closing the car's "bonnet," it becomes ridiculous. A good American beta reader can usually catch these mistakes. (BTW, you have a typo in your last paragraph: "or Giles clenaing his glasses too often.") Good article. |

I tried unsuccessfully to wean myself off your DS9 fanfics since I happened upon your page the first time about a year ago. And now I love your Buffy stories too although nothing compares to the chemistry and situations you put into your Kira/Dukat and Garak/Bashir stories. Still Buffy and Spike are so much better together than her and David Bore-me-anaz. In your stories we get to see a gentle, vulnerable side to her that ironically she only shares with Spike. How romantic. Anyway Keep up the great work. I can't wait to order a copy of your Buffy print-zine when it comes out! ;-) |
