Sadly my mother passed away on 16th August this year after discovering she had a brain tumor in April of this year. Only recently we discovered through my father that my mothers favorite single of all time was Sanfransico which was played at her funeral. I want to thank you for a beautiful song. Lisa Gregory x

Thanks Scott, San Francisco is in my top 5 all time songs and will always conjure memories of an incredible time. And your song helped make it that way.

At the end of the New Mamas and Papas concert, I was the USMC Vietnam Vet that jumped the security ropes, and caught up with you and thanked you for your inspiring song. "San Francisco" was a special song in the hearts of those of us that were in such an unpopular war. I especially want to thank you for dedicating the song to the Vietnam Veterans. Thank you my friend. Maybe some day we may connect again. Thanks again, Dale

Comments:Hi Scott, I don't know if you bother reading this stuff but... I was 14 in 1967. Your hit single had hit number 1 in the UK and I was on a summer camp with the (boy) Scouts in a place called Symond's Yat in England (http://www.wyenot.com/yatrock.htm). We visited Ross-on-Wye (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/LocationPhotos-g190769-Ross_on_Wye_Herefordshire_England.html)one day and all the shops seemed to be playing "San Francisco". I had the choice - buy your record or buy my Mum a present. I'm afraid that the present for my Mum won but, here in 2010, now I'm 57, I've just LEGALLY downloaded your song from Nokia music. Memories. Nostalgia's not what it used to be. Peace be with you. Jon

To this day this song about love still stirs up a deal of emotion. It's as if the song came down down from heaven to help mend America's heart. Thanks so much for such a mending song.

Comments:Scott, I remember when this song came out, it was an instant FAVORITE of mine! Then Paul Mauriet did an instrumental of the song you sang. I would turn up the volume when I had to vacuum clean the house twice a week. That was FUN! Well, I seen you for the 1st time on TV as they are selling the OLDIES in CD's, so that is what you looked like! Then I would hear your song later as the OLDIE'S RADIO PROGRAM would play your song. Then I went searching for you online yesterday, and I see that JOHN PHILLIPS of the Mama's and Papa's wrote this song for you. He was a great writer, I always liked the songs of the MAMA's and PAPA's, and I found some MIDI's to listen to for today! I see you are now 71! Well, Scott, this is my NUMBER #1 ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG of all the songs ever made. Thanks to John Phillips. And you have one of the BEST VOICES out there. LOVE and Peace, to you.

Thanks again for making the BABY BOOMER GENERATION HAPPY WITH YOUR SONG!!!! Love & Peace, Bobbie

When my plane landed ( a farmers daughter from MN) my new husband met me and I got into the car and your wonderful song was playing. To this day it brings tears to my eyes, make me wish I was 18 again. I fell so in love with San Fransisco, but never got back, I did however live in Va Beach the same time you did. I think that is great. Thank you Scott

Comments:To Scott McKenzie: "San Francisco" is timeless for me, an army brat who grew up at different posts throughout the 50s,60s and into the 70s. The Vietnam war years were not only difficult for the men and women in uniform, but for those of us in career military families. The song is so much a part of the culture of the time and will always be. Today, whether it is when I hear the song or when I hear it on my ipod, the world stops for 3 minutes and the same is true for my friends if we're together when the song plays. I hope a simple thanks will do, though it's far from enough. All the best. TTrainer

Where are you from?: near Hannover, northern Germany
E-mail address: Heiko.Perkuhn@web.de
Comments:Hello Scott My Name is Heiko Perkuhn. I'm a 27 years old guy from northern germany, near Hannover. For my last birthday-party, friends of mine asked me what they could bring as a present, and I answered: 'Well. Since a long time I'm wanting to get a copy of the SanFrancisco-album on cd. I allready had it on vinyl, but no player for this anymore. Though I had 'San Francisco' on several other CDs, compilations and stuff, I liked to have the album with your other songs on it. Now i got it, thanks to my friends. But why do I write these things down to your guestbook? I started listening to music very late, I think I was about 14 and I started with those songs from the sixties. I had heard them from my father, who was born in 1943. My father, who after a few MED strokes a few years ago now is badly disabled, likes still to listen to your music. He normally looks TV, but sometimes I ask him if he'd like to listen to some music, for example your album. I think, your music has given him a feeling not just of peace but also for freedom since he heard it in the sixties, and that's the same it's giving me everytime I listen to it. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade, for somehow I feel home thinking about the whole Hippie-movement. Maybe it sounds ridiculous when I say that because I never experienced the cruelty and terror of war by myself or the political and social situation, when a whole nation is splitted into pro and contra-war people. Unfortunately, somehow war's alway an actual subject, because somewhere on the world people are fighting and killing each other everytime... and although we don't speak about it everyday, I think everyone knows it deep in his heart. And when people listen to your most well-known song 'SanFrancisco', I suppose they got the message: Peace and freedom. But why do I tell you this? Actually I don't really know. I'm some kind of musician (singer-songwriter), who in the next days should decide wheter to try earn money while making his own music or to try being an architect - which I studied. By the way: May be you'd like to listen to a song a friend of mine and me were working out together when the earthquake on Haiti happened earlier this year. I had the idea to write a song so people could give money for helping Haiti by downloading it, but in the end the people who I had asked to help (government of the community), a friend of mine and me took the idea and transformed it into some other way of aid, planning an event. Nevertheless the song's still on the homepage of the community's government, and if you'd download it and listen to, maybe write a comment to my email-adress, I would be so glad... This is the direct link: http://www.wedemark.de/ftp/one-mornin.mp3 Yeah... I think I wrote much stuff, didn't I? Would be very glad to recieve a comment on the song or the things I wrote... 'cause allthough there are friends with whom I could talk about, I suddenly had the idea of writing to you this evening... one of my favourite musicians. Best regards, thanks a lot for your time, Heiko

People occasionally ask me if I's "the singer." Nope, can't carry a tune! But I still love your music. The Navy brought me to Virginia Beach three times - decided to settle. Been teaching and coaching - love it. My best Navy tour, though, was in San Francisco - ironic. Maybe we could meet someday! Best, Scott

When "What's the difference?" came out she nailed me at the breakfast table to make sure I heard it. I know she would approve of finding out that you were freaked out by all the girls chasing you and quite frankly, it's good to know that not every man out there thinks women are something he has to keep score on. Thanks for the honesty. Roberta

Comments:I remember the song AND the mood it created so well when it first came out. Something fine, yes, something fine. So today I am at Disneyland with my daughter to celebrate her 7th birthday (and I am 60!). While walking today thru Disney's California Adventure Park, where they play "California-based" songs all day, sure enough, today they played "San Francisco". It took me back and stopped me. I am sure my daughter and wife (she's 50) had no idea why I stopped walking while the song played. It did that to me the first time I heard it, with a world still ahead of me, and it still does it today, with a world behind me. Thanks for the moments back then and the memories now, Scott. Don Rothenstein P.S. - I also recall "What's the difference" - I first heard it on a Johnny Rivers album called Realization. Mighty fine song.

In addition to "San Francisco," I used to lip sync "Like An Old Time Movie" and Sebastian's "It's Not Time Now" to your voice while watching myself in the mirror. What can I say? -- I was only 17 -- and I'm 60 now. But I can still sing every word. Now I've got to get to work on learning "We've Been Asking Questions." Thanks so much for being a part of my life's soundtrack.

The following weekend, with the song still in my head, I went out on the Strip and purchased my first bass guitar. Fast-foward to '92. I read a piece in Bass Player magazine. Anthony Jackson did an interview with a "Joe Osborn." At the end of the article was a catalog of Joe's songs. I said to myself "Holy S***, I went through my entire life humming Joe Osborn's bass lines!" Joe Osborn - my bass player idol. Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" - one of my top ten songs of ALL TIME. Some songs make you smile; some songs make you cry. This one does both.

I can still hear "Dark As A Dungeon" in my mind with Scott singing, and many of the songs that The Journeymen recorded still come back to me as their version, even though others may have recorded a more popular version. Of course, I was also an instant fan of "San Francisco" from the first time I heard it. A group that I think compared favorably to The Journeymen is "The Limeliters," and I'm also a big fan of theirs, especially the Glenn Yarbrough phase and the Red Grammer phase.

Comments:Scott, Wow, what a story. I was in the seventh grade the first time I heard the song "San Francisco." It is an icon of the San Francisco Bay Area. I cannot help but think of that time. Haight Ashbury, the love and the freedom. Something that will never happen again for the next 100 years, at least. It changed the world and as humble as you may be, I think you know it. You may have no idea how deeply that song touched the lives of so manay people. It changed my life and I cannot express the sincere appreciation I have to you for singing it. There are simply not enough words to express that kind of appreciation. So, I will simply say thank you and enjoy the song as a trubute to what you have done for me and so many people. Thanks....................Joe

Since I didn't quite understand English then, it was the music that I was interested in . When you grew up in Borneo, you had no idea what was going on in the rest of the world. I listened to your song so much that I eventually got the meaning of the lyric and it inspired me so much that as soon as I was able to leave ,I packed up and left for good and it totally changed my life for the better. Thank you very much for the gift of this amazing song.

I am 53 and never been there but have always been sort of an aged hippie with a 32 year old hippie son. His five year old son calls me his hippie grammal. Comments:I have always had a passion for music and constantly listened to the radio, singing along with the hits of the day. In the summer of 1967, I was singing to the tune of San Francisco, learning every word. It was a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, I was not in my favorite place! I was in Vietnam. On Nov. 13,1967, I boarded a 707 to leave Vietnam and as we flew out over the South China Sea, I began singing San Francisco because that's where you went when you left Vietnam. Before I knew it, everyone on that plane joined in. I still had friends in Vietnam and I wrote letters telling them of the exhilarating experience on that plane. The word spread and it became tradition to sing San Francisco as you lifted off toward the USA, but November 13th was the beginning. Heard the song yesterday and decided to find a website to tell my story. That's it!!!

It gave me a longing to go to the city, at fifteen in the 60s it seemed an impossiblity, I eventually made it in 2001 and am returning this year. Thanks Scott. The song gave me a dream. Comments:My wife (then girlfriend) bought Scott's "Sanfranciso" in 1967, back in Ohio, where we both grew up. We started to date that summer, which ultimately led to our marriage in 1971. We're still going strong in 2010 at this writing, and that song brought us together. It still sends chills down my spine when I hear it. I recently watched the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival on Sundance channel and this was the opening song. Same chills and it caused me to check on Scott. Glad to see he's alive and doing well. His song will always be a strong and memorable part of our life. I don't think that I've ever heard a stronger, clearer singing voice.

Comments:When I think of Scott's most famous song, some forty three years after it became an anthem for the peace movement, I realise that when he sings "For those who come to San Francisco...", he isn't really singing about San Francisco at all - he's singing about people choosing to subscribe to a simpler, more peaceful, alternative world - the very same world that John Lennon was thinking about in "Imagine". Thank you Scott - for figuring in the soundtrack of my adult life.

Comments:Dear Scott, I am so excited to find this website. This is your long lost niece, Marlie. I am your sister Margaret's first daughter. We only met once and that was on a trip across the US when we came to Arlington to see you and your mom. Your sister is living in a lovely retirement lodge in Charlotte, NC.and will turn 88 years old this next month-she doing well. She lost her oldest son, Robert, last month. Your nephews, Kenneth and Doug are living in Texas (and what a family resemblance)and your niece Dorothy (named after your mom) is also living in NC. I will send them a link to your website. We have certainly enjoyed your music over the years and look forward to reconnecting soon as we have often wondered where you were living. My oldest son's daughter (my granddaughter) was doing a homework assignment last night and called me to as if there were any famous people in our family...I told them about you and they googled your name and lo and behold they found your website and forwarded it to me. I will be seeing your sister, Margaret and my mom next week and will be sure and let her see your pictures and music on your website. I know she will be so excited. Love ya, Marlie (your long lost niece)

Comments:Dear Scott My only visit to the USA was in washington DC years ago. But I fell in love with your song the first time I heard it. Partly because I was fascinated by the era (still at boarding school at that time), partly because of the music and lyrics and partly because of your gentle voice (almost inviting people to come to San Francisco). I am of mixed race: one half from France, the other half from Madagascar. But back in 1967, I was pleased I could speak and understand English. Otherwise, I would have missed the meaning of that beautiful song!!! Take care and God bless you for this gift (I feel young again every time I listen to it!!!) Jeanine

Comments:I also was 17 when the song was released. Our country, like the USA, was in turmoil. This song promoted a movement that really did a lot to stop the Vietnam War. It is very sad that there is no such movement today that targets some of the carnage that is taking place. Scott, you and John Phillips have left the world something that will last a long time. Congratulations and thank you.

Today we will be listening to San Francisco. I love that you've provided the history on this and why it was a significant song at the time. I was born in 1973, so obviously, I did not experience this first hand. I appreciate your artistry and thank you for your contribution. And, despite what you think about your voice, I think it's amazing. Jennifer Welter, Florida

'hey Friend wake up, I'm throwing rocks at your widow pane . . . ' Thank you for your music, it defined a time in my life, and has always been a great memory. Comments:I grew up in Southern California in the 50's and 60's and played in local rock and roll bands. In the 60's a song came out that would change my life forever, San Francisco. It had a message that to a young teenager spoke volumes. It still does. I am 59 and am a two tour Vietnam Vet and this song is still one of my favorite from that era. I am still playing music and I always try and play San Francisco. Scott McKenzie, thank you from the bottom of my heart for that song and for Just Like an Old Time Movie.
