Areas of Interest:Battle of Salineville Ohio, and any information on Camp Douglas POWs.
Family accounts:My GG-Grandfather rode with Morgan, (I'm fairly sure)was captured in Salineville Ohio in July 1863 and incarcerated at Camp Douglas until March 1865. He volunteered for service in the CSA at age 18 (1862)in Clark County KY. I have some of his civil war records that were obtained on-line, but not much else. Interestingly no-one living in my family knew these facts until just a few months ago when I discovered them through genealogical research. If anyone knows anything about him, his regiment or Camp Douglas, I'd be very interested.
Thank you.
D. Bonny
Other comments:I also had two other GGG-grandfathers involved in the war. Both fought for the Union; Andrew Jackson Nash, Priv., Co. G 101st Indiana Infantry, died in Gallatin TN, buried in Nashville (unmarked grave).
Michael Dennis, Priv., Co. H 75th Indiana Infantry. Wounded and released.
Last, my GGG-uncle, Francis Marion Cottman, CSA, Sergeant, Co. C 11th Cavalry. Mustered out 1865.

Areas of Interest:Company F, the Mississippi Company was led by Captain (Later Major/Brevent Colonel)Thomas B. Webber who appeared to be a wimp in his 1861 diary, but was unable to mount his horse at the start of the "Great Raid" and during this raid his men began to call him the Iron Man. Duke referred to later diaries in his early history, but I have been unable to locate them. Does anyone have a suggestion as to their location? I continue to research Co F.
Family accounts:19 of Company F were able to escape across the Ohio & some fought at Chickamauga, being the first to fire a shot and the last to fire in that battle according to Nathna B. Forrest. Among the group was E.H. Crump, the father of Memphis' "Boss" Crump. Robert Kizer was later captured @ Cynthiana. I have traced several members through the conflict and afterwards where many died an early death--yellow fever & acholism in addition to the beating they gave their bodies on the raids. They were a valiant group.

Areas of Interest:Interested in any of the battles 4th Cavalry participated in. Also information about Duty's Knob in Pike County. Is said to have been a hideout of Morgan and his men. My g grandfather was captured there.
Family accounts:My research has gleaned the following information: My 2nd great grandfather, William Sanders, mustered into the Ky 4th Cavalry on September 10, 1862. He was transferred to Company K under Giltner in December (would be interested in any battles therefter.) He was captured on April 15, 1863 and taken to Cincinnati (possibly McLean Barreks) He was released on June 4, 1863. He disappears from all records after that date. The family oral history states that he died in the Civil War and was shipped in a crate to Louisville from (either Illinois or Indiana) and when the crate was opened it was discovered that he had been alive when nailed in (scratches on top of box and he has pulled his beard out.) I am wondering if he had rejoined Morgan's unit for the Indiana raid - don't know what happened to soldiers when they were released. He came from South Elkhorn, Kentucky (Lexington area) and associated with many of the families that came from Virginia with the Traveling Church (Hunts listed, maybe the same Hunt family.) His mother was a Hunt and he may have been a distant cousin to John Hunt Morgan although I have been unable to prove the connection. Many of the sons of the families in this area were part of the same units, Ky. 2nd and 4th Cavalry and were loyal to one another and their ideals which leads me to believe he would have attempted to rejoin his unit. This is not reflected on is military record, only that he was captured. He was not in any census folling 1862 and his wife was living with her family in 1870.
Other comments:Would love to hear from anyone who shares a similar history and/or may be able to shed some light on this mystery of William Sanders and what became of him.

George W. Bowman

Company/Regiment:

Areas of Interest:general interest in General Morgan and his exploits, as my Great Grandfather was one of his cavalrymen.
Family accounts:George W. Bowman, rode with General Morgan, from 1862, when he mustered in, until 1863, when he was one of about 50 of Morgan's men captured at Twelve Mile Island, on a feint-raid into Ohio. He spent his main term as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Illinois, located where later the famous Chicago stockyards were set up. George Bowman had three brothers that also rode with Morgan, and two of them were also captured at Twelve Mile Island.
Other comments:I am very fortunate to have a photo of my Great Grandfather in his cavalry uniform, the very one he wore when he rode with Morgan. I'm super lucky to have a lot of the buttons from that uniform, with original woolen threads still attatched on some, and the wool fibers are bright and unfaded. Thus, I know the exact color and texture of my ancestors uniform, should I ever want to reconstruct it. Almost all of the buttons are diverse types of Union buttons, very likely captured in one of the many raids that Morgan made. I have a silver pin that George Bowman wore when he rode with Morgan. It is a star in a crescent moon, and is inscribed with his initials, G W B, and the phrase 2d Ky Calvy. Around all this are some ornate curly-ques, engraved into the surface. I have some prisoner of war records of my G Grandfather, from Camp Douglas, and also a Carte de Visite type of photo, on cardstock, taken at Camp Douglas, and George Bowman is there posed with 4 other members of Morgans Cavalry. His, and their names are written on the back.
George Bowman had two children, my Great Uncle Julius V. Bowman, from whom I inherited my connections to the past, and my grandmother, his daughter Mary Elizabeth Bowman.

Areas of Interest:I am currently researching my Lewis Family roots. I would like to know where my Great,Great Grandfather saw service during the Civil War.
Family accounts:Howard Andrew Lewis is my Great, Great Grandfather. He was born in Morgan, Kentucky on 31 July, 1839 and died on 18 July, 1914. He is buried in Elliott, Kentucky.

He enlisted into the CSA on 29 December, 1861 with Company K, 5th Kentucky Infantry. He stayed with them from 29 December, 1861 until 20 October, 1862. He re-enlisted on 22 October, 1862 and was transferred to Company A, 2nd Battalion Kentucky Mounted Rifles. His company commander was Captain John T. Williams.

He was granted a furlough in January, 1865 and while visiting family in Magoffin, Kentucky he was captured by the Union as sent to a prison camp in Louisa, Kentucky. He was later moved to a prison camp in Lexington, Kentucky. He stated that while there the rations fed to the prisoners of war were very meager. At one point there was an outbreak of smallpox in the camp and he was worried after all he had gone thru up to this point, that it was a sorry thing if death came knocking to die in such a fashion.

He did survive and was able to return to his home in Morgan, Kentucky. He wasted no time once he got back and married his long time sweetheart Serilda Hulda Smith on 20 April, 1865. His firstborn was born on 21 April, 1866. He was named Solomon Buckner Lewis, my Great Grandfather.

Howard's Great, Great, Great Grandfather was James Theophilus Lewis. He was born in Wales on 9 August, 1736. He immigrated to the Colonies and lived in Ashe City, North Carolina. While living in NC, he joined the local militia and fought in the Revolutionary War. After the war he migrated west and settled down in Leslie, Kentucky.
Other comments:Both of my parents were born and raised in Boyd, Kentucky. My father Mack E. Lewis, Sr. graduated from high school in June, 1950 and immediately joined the service and was shipped to Korea. I was raised in the military. My fathers last duty station was in Virginia and that is where my parents decided to stay.

I was raised in the Richmond, Virginia area. I attended college at the University of Richmond and was a member of their ROTC program. Upon graduation I was commission a 2LT in the Army. I was sent to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and completed Artillery school their in 1975. Being from a military family I made a life of it and retired 25 years later. My rank is Colonel US Army retired.

Family accounts:I have heard stories about Gen. Morgan all throughout my childhood from my grandmother, Marjorie Sharp, who's maiden name was Marjorie Morgan. Gen. Morgan was related to my grandmother through her father Abraham Morgan who I'm not sure exactly how he was related to Gen. Morgan. I've been trying to do some research on my own to go back down the lines and see exactly how we are related but I haven't made any great progress in the search so far. I am a Kentucky native and was raised right down the road from Raider's Holler where Gen. Morgan and his raiders went through the valley on one of their raids. I am very proud to be an ancestor of Gen. Morgan and would love to receive any additional information about him if possible.

Thank you,

Morgan's Ohio raid
Family accounts:A second story of my family's contact with the General's cavalry:
During his raid across Ohio he crossed Perry County and passed through the Buckingham area. While his men were resting and refreshing themselves at the Linscott farm, one of the Raiders leaned down in the saddle and scooped up the farmer's eight-year-old daughter, and perched her on the saddle before him.
He stroked her ringlets and said softly, "You look so much like my own little girl back home."
The little girl grew to womanhood, became a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother; she spoke fondly of "that big Kentucky man on his big horse" and remembered his voice was gentle, his hands as he held her before him strong, warm, reassuring. He had the bluest eyes, she said, and smelled of sweat and horse leather and Indian tobacco.
The little girl was my Great-Grandma Linscott.

Areas of Interest:General John H. Morgan in particular, Freemasons and Freemasonry in the War
Family accounts:My great-grandfather was about 16 when General Morgan and his Raiders passed through Perry County, Ohio. Great-Granddad Sullivan Maxwell and his brother were hunting on the family farm near Buckingham on Indian Run when the General and his lead riders came into view. Great-Granddad recognized who he must be and brought his rifle to shoulder, for he and his younger brother were hunting that day. His brother, having an attack of good sense, chopped his hand in between the percussion nipple and the falling hammer -- realizing, as Sullivan didn't, that they had only the one, single shot rifle between them; that there were several well armed riders with the General; that their position would be marked with a great cloud of smoke, and though they might kill the General, their own deaths would be assured.
Not realizing his close call, the General lifted his reins and continued with his men toward Corning, where they crossed Sunday Creek and proceeded up what is now East Hill and out the back bone of the ridge, now known as Chapel Hill Road.
Other comments:My ancestor's name was John Simmons. He was German and spoke with a heavy accent. I believe him to have been snatched up by Yankee recruiters when he stepped off the boat. He later went insane from the horrors he experienced during the War.

Family accounts:I'm looking for a listing of Morgan's Men at the time of his death. My Grandmother, who was born in 1897 and died in 1994 always told of a story of her grandfather who was one of Morgan's Men. As it went, one of Morgan's Men killed Morgan. He left for Texas and once he was pardoned returned to Tennessee to find that his wife had remarried. He returned to Texas and wrote a letter back to his wife (which I have) using the name of his cousin and talked about coming back to Tennessee and finding her going on with her life. We have always wondered how to go about finding out what happened to him and the history involved. Can you advise me as to how to go about this? I look forward to your reply. I'm sure there are gaps in this story, but this is the way it was handed down to us by our grandmother.

Benedict Flaget Lilly

M.M.A. member?:

Areas of Interest:I have a page from the Confederate Records I got in Missouri that said my Great Grandfather, Benedict Flaget Lilly enlisted in 1862 in Lexington, KY in Company K under General Morgan, he was a Private. He said he was in the battle at Perryvile, KY, taken prisoner at Bardstown, KY (where he lived) and paroled out of service in Louisville, KY
Is there any information on this battle and Company K?
Family accounts:"My greatest experience of the war was the batle at Perryville, KY., with heavy losses on both sides from there we went to Knoxville where there was a general review of the Confederate Army - with President Jefferson Davis and his guards. Then we marched on through Murphysboro to Hartsville, Tenn. where another great battle was fought and won by the Confederate troops. We were ordered to cut off all communication from Louisville, KY. The order was filled to the entire satisfaction of our commander. Then we proceeded on our way to Ohio on our journey we captured a regiment of Yankees at Elizabeth, Ky. From there we went to Bardstown where I was taken prisoner by the Yankees and taken to Louisville, Ky. They gave me a choice to put up bond or go to Camp Chase prison until the war was over and I choose the last of the two evens and gave bond of $4, 000 for my release."
Other comments:The above information I found in:
Confederate Records
from the United Daughters of the Confederacy Files
Volume Five: King-Mirrick
Complied by Joanne Chiles Eakin

Would there be any records I can get on my Great Grandfather's Confederate service
Thank you for your help!

I am working on a history of Major Thomas B. Webber & Co F, the Ms. Co and am seeking info, esp trying to locate Webber's 1862 diary. I have a copy of his 1861 diary & Basil Duke quotes from Webber's later diary in his book "History.."
Family accounts:Robert Kizer's grandfather who lived near him in N. MS. remained a Union supporter, including a statement that Jefferson Davis should be hanged. The grandfather owned a large farm and fought in the War of 1812. I have written a book about the loyalists in MS. and esp. Marshall County, MS, "A Respectable Minority". Webber was a part of the Jefferson Davis guard when Davis left Richmond, but he did not surrender with the rest of the remnants of the 2nd Ky.

He was captured and according to one of my relatives spent time in a POW camp in Douglas Il. He was released in a prisoner exchange and went back to his Cav unit. He had his jaw shot off at Lookout Mountain and spent time in another POW Camp Delaware. Apparently he had horrible infection and became religious. He \was released and returned to Tennessee and from there went to Texas

Areas of Interest:WILLIAM MILTON PATTON, PRIVATE CO.I 8TH. KY. INF. (mounted)
Family accounts:My Greatgrandfather William Milton Patton (1828-1911)
Born in Wilkes County N.C. died in Nashville tenn.
He served with I Co. 8Th, KY. INF. (mounted). His unit was attached to Morgan's Calvary on the raid. They were ambushed by Union Calvary my GGranfather while trying to avoid capture was pinned under his horse when it stumbled and fell on him. He broke both of his legs. He was sent to Camp Douglas Chicago and because his legs were never properly set he could not walk therefore he could not attempt an escape as some of the other prisoners did, many sucessfully in the early days. He returned to Nashville Tenn
and even though he was crippled he was married an raised a large family or else I would not be writing this report.
"PAP" died while living with my Grandparents. He was granted a pension by the State of Tennessee (s5412), he was also given a POW medal. He had to produce two people who were witness to his confinement and injuries in order to get the pension he found a Captan and a Private. My Grandfather was with the N.C.& St.L. RR(later became part of L and N in the fifties.) My Grandfather learned that there was to be a Confederate & Union reunion at a city in the north. My Grandfather arranged for train passage and my
Grandmother was to accompany him to the reunion. My Grandfather approached "PAP" with the offer and he replied
"they went off and left me and I will not go to see them."
There is a large statue in front of the Partheon (side facing vanderbilt) his name and several other Confederate Veteran's names are on the statue. The statue was dedicated in 1900 and all the living Confederate Veterans had their name on the monument. The statue is of a mother cradling a
dead Confederate solider in her arms. My GGrandfather's life would make a good movie. Born and married in Wilkes county North Carolina migrates to Aaron's Run Montgomery County Ky. 1880 U.S. census he later moved to Greene County
Tennessee. My Grandmother was born in Greenville Tenn. I am not sure if "PAP" was with Morgan when they raided the banks in the montgomery county ky. and Lexington Ky. Being that my GGrandfather was a resident of Montgomery Co. Ky. and being that is where many of the banks were robbed I assume that is why he moved to Tenn. They robbed the bank in mount sterling and north middleton Ky. they made off with a large amount of gold.Morgan then cAptured Lexington Ky. again they robbed some banks and then headed to tennessee. This was shortly before John Hunt Morgan was killed when he was betrayed by a woman at whose house he was reating.
Other comments:I want to learn more about company I 8TH. KY. INF. (mounted)
I know that some of the men in his company are buried with men from other Ky. units in the Clarksville Ky. Hospital Cemetery. "PAP" had a half brother Samuel E. Patton however I cannot find any record of his service during the war.

They made a point of saying that Morgan's men were the toughest - very few or none of them agreed to join the Union and fight the Indians - they stayed in the prison camp where many died. Cyrus Wingate (4th KY Cavlary) finished the war and survived into his late 80's being one of the oldest living survivors (died in 1926 - but I understand one of Morgan's men lived until the 1950s!).

I believe he is also mentioned in Captain Edward Guerrant's journals fleeing Abingdon before Stoneman's raid. Other comments:I am interested to know more - if true - about the fact or fiction on J.H. Morgan's children. I ran across a reference to a Sydney Morgan ("the son of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan") in reference to Garrett Morgan the inventor. What is the story here. The reference also sattes that he and his wife were former slaves.

I need the reference to place a connection with the family of Garrett Morgan.

Thank you for any refence or information.

We are in the process of restoring the church and were this summer the sight of the SCV and UDC picnic which promises to become an annual event. Fr. Ryerson

I am an ex- cavalary trooper too. I enlisted in 1936 and served until 1940 when the government took away our mounts. Then I went into armor to join George Patton. I was at Fort Knox as an instructor in 1944.

May the Good Lord bless you.

M.M.A. member?:

No
Areas of Interest:It is unclear if Richard James, brother of David Hunt James is the same Richard James who was captured in Ohio when David Hunt James was captured. The family assumes they are one and the same.
Family accounts:There is little if anything that has come down in the family about the war experience of David Hunt James or Richard James, except the fact that they served under Morgan, were captured, were ultimately released in Virginia, and walked home to Lexington, Ky. Anything more that is known about their service would be information dearly welcomed by the family. Please contact me, Eric James:
ericjames@ericjames.org

Other information about the David Hunt James family can be viewed on the family web site, Stray Leaves, identified above.

Of particular interest currently (2005) would be the possible link between the family of Basil Duke and the James relatives of David Hunt and Richard James who lived in Rodney, Mississippi. The James brothers' father, John Graves James, migrated there from Lexington KY in 1842. Other James family members operated a slave trade there, transporting surplus slaves from Lexington Ky to Rodney MS for auction. The three brothers who operated the auction were John Duke James, David Daniel James, & Thomas Green James. These three brothers were sons of Thomas James of Culpeper Co VA and spouse Elizabeth "Betsy" Duke of Beaufort Co VA who settled in Nashville TN. Betsy Duke's parents are John Duke Jr. and Charlotte Green.

The statue of John Hunt Morgan erected in Lexington KY in 1910 is a few hundred feet distant from the Second National Bank of Lexington building built by David Hunt James and his bank in 1883.

Morgan's Men Ancestor:

Yes

Ancestor Name:

Arkie Taylor

Company/Regiment:

Not sure,

M.M.A. member?:

No
Areas of Interest:It was told to me by old family members that he joined company B, 2nd Ky calvary.
Family accounts:Arkie Taylor was married and had a daughter when he joined the CSA calvary. When his unit was near his home in Harrison county he was allowed to visit his wife and child. He complained of his hat blowing off when riding fast. His wife punched a hole in each side of the brim and put a ribbon in it so he could tie it on his head. The next day he was in a battle in Cynthianna, Ky. and was shot off his horse in the Licking river. His brother, Hickman, who was in the same company, searched for his body but never found it. He did find the hat with the ribbon in it.
Other comments:I would like very much to be a member of Morgans Men.

Morgan's Men Ancestor:

Don't Know

Ancestor Name:

James Morgan

M.M.A. member?:

No
Areas of Interest:I am interested in finding out if Luther Morgans son, Alexander Gibson Morgan was married. Who he was married to and if he had any children, before he was killed at the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War.

Any help would be greatly appreicated.
Family accounts:My Great great great grandfather James Morgan was supposedly one of Morgains Raiders. However, I have not been able to prove that yet. He married Pinina Bright, and their children were Narcissis, Fannie, James Walter, & Rawley. Narcissis would have been my great great Grandmother, she married David Wiley Reagan in 1874, Franklin County, MO. Any informatin on them would be appreicated.

Morgan's Men Ancestor:

Yes

Ancestor Name:

Capt. Ralph Sheldon

Company/Regiment:

C/2nd (Duke's)

M.M.A. member?:

No
Areas of Interest:Learning more about the pre-war and post-war history of Ralph Sheldon.
Family accounts:Per family history, Ralph was born in Chili, Monroe County NY in 1829, 2nd son of Norman Sheldon. We believe he migrated to Kentucky in 1859 or 1860 and later joined Morgan's Men. He lived in Nelson County (BArdstown?) after the war and married the sister (Rebecca Josephine Simmons) of a friend and business associate, Ransom Simmons, in 1876. She died in 1892 and I believe Ralph died in 1895.
