Was very surprised to find out my great great grandfather fought for the Union. I also am told his wife my grandmother was full Cherokee Indian. I wish I could have one day to go back and visit with them. I am very proud of them, may they rest in peace. I also see there was a !st. regiment that fought against Gen. Morgan, would like to know if it was my grandfather's regiment. I do know that they were stationed at Camp Dick Robinson, so it's very possible. Thank You for this wonderful website. |

She told her Illinois family (just before they headed via train to Reno, Nevada, to start life over after the Civil War: Her nephew (more likely a cousin) named John Hunt Morgan visited her in Illinois. Hepzibah Morgan Willis is related to both a great-uncle, General Daniel Morgan, whose nephew is James Morgan IV, son of the general's full brother, James Morgan II, named for James Morgan I wed t o Eleanora Morgan, mother of General Daniel Morgan. Hepzibah, therefore, is related through her grandfather, James Morgan I, to the frontiersman, Daniel Boone. His mother, Sarah Morgan, is the daughter of Edward Morgan and the sister to James Morgan I, who is also Edward Morgan's son. How is General John Hunt Morgan related to General Daniel Morgan? Mary Brawner married Dr.Augustine Shi who tooks some of the bride's brothers (also doctors) with him. They served for the South and stayed especially with the final days of the war in Virginia, particularly in Chancellorsville. After the war, some of the doctors left worn-torn Georgia for Florida and onto Indian Territory where they were doctors for many years. Dr. Pat Shi was a doctor (who also raised race horses) in Blanchard, Oklahoma, for decades. Dr. Augustine Shi was a horse-and-buggy doctor who wed a Chickasaw princess and they are grandparents of Dr. A. H. Shi in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Mary Ann Shi Miller |

His brother John W. Taylor was 2nd Lt. Co. E of 10th KY. Also Capt. Sam B. Taylor Co. E, they were all cousins. His brother Walker Taylor, Maj. staff of Gen. Buckner, wounded @ Ft. Donelson Tn. All served with Morgan. Sam led the steamboat crossing of Brandenberg into IN during the great raid. Two other Taylor brothers served in Federal forces. |

| Comments: | I have one relative for sure who rode with Morgan. He was Capt. T. M. Hammack, Co. D, Johnson's Cav. He joined Johnson's Rangers on July 20, 1862 and was with Morgan during the Christmas raid in Kentucky and the Indiana and Ohio raid in the summer of '63. After the battle of Buffington Island, he was captured July 20, 1863 - exactly one year after he joined the CSA. Was sent to prison in Ohio, then PA, then MD then DE, before being sent, as one of the Immortal 600 to Hilton Head, SC and Ft. Pulaski, GA. In March of 1865, he was sent back to DE and finally released June 17, 1865. |

He told my father that since he could not not swim, he held onto his horses tail as he forded the Cumberland River, They could not build fires to warm themselves as this would give away their location (the raid was in December and it was snowing). |

We are related to Jefferson Davis CSA president and if anyone cares to do the work involved, would find out that Morgan is also related to Jefferson Davis through the Welsh connection from the families Gwillym Morgan Davies. Lucy Williams, the place where Morgan was killed, is my relative on my grandmothers side.I have some information on this but it is sketchy at best.Many of the southern officers were related and some even fought their relatives on the North side. What a brutal senseless war. |

He and his brother David are the only know Confederate soldiers from our small community made up of primarily Union sympathizers from East Tennessee. Legend has it that Uncle John and David were captured while making and attack on Ohio and sent to prison in Illinois. There they escaped and walked all the way back to Sand Gap.By the time they got got home the war was over. |

| Comments: | My great grandfather rode with Morgan with the 5th Kentucky Cavalry and was captured and sent to Camp Douglas for the remainder of the war..His brother, William, also rode in the same unit. After the war, he married and moved to Arkansas, where he remained until his death. He is buried in Helena, I believe. |

| Please share any family accounts during the war:: | Pickard Vallandingham, my great-grandfather, left for war with the 1st Battalion, 4th Kentucky Cavalry in the late fall of 1862. His younger brother, John, joined him when he became 16 in 1864. John had been soldiering but a couple of months when he was killed from Union troops while defending a covered bridge crossing the north fork of the Holston River at Marion, VA.
Family story is very common. Father, Absalom Vallandingham, was a Major in the Union Army. Both of his son's fought for and one died for the Confederacy. |

Enlisted at Tunnell Hill, Ga in 1862 in Co B 4th Tenn Infantry Regiment and served until close of war, surrendered at Greensboro, NC in 1865 under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston. By this time, his unit was called the 4th/8th Tennessee Cavalry (Col. Baxter Smith's). He died in 1867, his Widow's Pension is #1094 (Mary Jane Davis Hicks). He is buried in Boy Cemetery, Bluff City, Sullivan, TN. He did not live to see the birth of his son, William Jacob Hicks, my grandfather, who was born on May 24, 1867. |

| Comments: | My gg-grandfather was a Raider. Enlisted in 1862 while Duke was in Rockcastle County KY. Captured July 26th 1863 in Salineville OH, first sent to Camp Chase and then on to the north's hell-hole, Camp Douglas; he was just 19 years old. Upon taking the Oath of Allegiance, he was released on Mar 24 1865.
He became a member of the United Confederate Veterans in Madison KY, which evolved into the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He married twice, fathered 10 children and died at age 58. I am proud to be his descendant. |

| Comments: | I'm trying to figure out the military service of my great-great-grandfather John Ash McGee of Spencer County, KY (1836-1896). I'm fairly sure that if he served at all, it was in the CSA. There's a John McGee listed in the AG Report in the 2nd KY Cav, CSA, who transferred to Byrne's Battery, but as there is no muster list for Byrne's Battery, I'm stymied. Could someone help me out, with either a yes or a no?

| Please share any family accounts during the war:: | from what I can gather Pvt Whitecotton from Union county joined up 15 AUg 1962 with Johnsons 10th KY CAV and was captured 8 miles north of saline 26 july 1863, went to Camp Douglas got small pox escaped from the smallpox ward and made it back to union county ky and fought till the end of the war with Nathan bedford Forrest. During his escape he was with another smallpox escapee named Pvt Benton 3rd GACAV. His faher (My ggg granfater) was in the same Gen Forrest regiment, A Major George Whitecotton (Adjutant). My mother is a whitecotton and I am proud to be a son of the South. |

Not only did Frank & Jesse ride w/ Capt. Quantrill, but that Commander's 2nd-In-Command, was a Black Confederate, as was the Chief Spy.
I rode with 'Capt. Quantill', as one of his 40 core troopers, some 135 yrs. later, across the same country, to whup yanks. |

The family later filed claims with the State of Ohio for lost property from Morgan's men. After researching heavily online I have found that he was originally apart of the 7th Cavalry of Tennessee and then later the 22nd Cavalry of Tennessee. He was capture in Mississippi in early May of 1863. He then was transfered to various places throughout Tennessee including La Grange, Memphis, Nashville, possibly Columbia, and then to Louisville, KY. From Louisville he was transfered to Fort McHenry on May 29,1863. He was paroled upon being received, and within a month joined with the Kentucky 14th to be around Gen. Bennett, whom he was with in Tennessee. He was captured at Bluffington, OH and transfered to several prison camps where he eventually was located at Ft. Dawson. This is where he died on January 7, 1865 (contrary to the roll report on this website of July 7, 1865). This is an interesting journey from a boy who identified himself as 19 on the 1860 U.S. Census. Our family for the past hundred and some odd years had assumed that he died in the Battle of Shiloh. After careful research, I have found that this was a great journey indeed. | Please share any family accounts during the war:: | John Wesley Colyer, of Perry, Houston Co., a veteran of Morgan's cavalry, was born near Somerset, Ky., May 8, 1834. His parents were John Colyer, a Virginian of Revolutionary ancestry, and Lydia, daughter of John Purvis, of South Carolina, a soldier of the Revolution. Mr. Colyer, a resident of Kentucky when the war began, and engaged in mercantile business, joined the famous cavalryman, John H. Morgan, when the latter was in command of a squadron in 1861, and served with him for nearly a year in Kentucky and Tennessee, participating in the daring exploits in middle Tennessee that first made the name of Morgan familiar throughout the country.
In the summer of 1862 he took part in Morgan's first great Kentucky raid, from Knoxville, Tennessee, and was in battle at Tomkinsville, Lebanon and Cynthiana, where he was wounded July 17, 1862. After his native State was occupied by the armies of Bragg and Kirby Smith, he organized a company of cavalry, of which he was elected first lieutenant, and M. B. Perkins Captain. This was made Company C of the Sixth Kentucky cavalry, under the command of Col. J. Warren Grisby. On the return to Kentucky he served about Murfreesboro under General Buford, and took part in the battle of December 31st and the raid to Lavergne. Joining Morgan again, he participated in the battles of Milton, Snow's Hill and others, early in 1863, and in June set out on the memorable raid through Ohio. Before reaching the Ohio River he was in battle at Green River bridge and Lebanon, and after riding through Indiana and Ohio around Cincinnati, he took part in the fight near Buffington's Island, on the Ohio river, July 19, 1863, where the greater part of Morgan's command was captured. Here he was wounded and made a prisoner. After some time in a hospital at Covington, Ky., he was held at Camp Chase three months and subsequently at Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, until June, 1865. During this imprisonment of nearly two years he had frequent opportunities to gain his liberty by swearing allegience to the United States, but this he steadfastly refused to do as long as the Confederate government was yet maintained. Lieutenant Colyer came to Georgia in December, 1865, and made his home at Fort Valley, where he engaged in farming and merchandising. He served two terms as alderman of Fort Valley, and in 1883 was elected sheriff of Houston County. He was retained in this office six years, and after that he made his home at Perry, busying himself with farming. He assumed management of the Wells Hotel, a popular hostelry. Mr. Colyer was married in 1868 to Mary C. Lomman, and they had a son and two daughters. Source: Confederate Military History Vol. VII, p. 573. |

One (a 3rd Lt. John C. Terrill, Co. E) was captured south of the Cumberland near the commencement of the raid. The remaining seven were captured at Buffington Island and taken to Camp Douglas, IL to be released/paroled on Jan 12, 1865.

| Comments: | I have really enjoyed your website. I was born in West Virginia (another boarder state) and moved to Stanford, KY in 1983. J.H.Morgan is a local hero here, and I wanted to learn more about him. Some of our old privately owened homes display his picture on their walls. The last names of some of his men are still in our phonebook. It is local ledgend that Morgan and his men camped in Stanford several times during his raids. The field where this is said to have happened has turned up several Cival War artifacts. Does anyone know if there is any written record that J.H. Morgan
and his men had an encampment in Stanford, KY? I believe there is a record of one of his raids on Union soldiers in Crab Orchard, which is also in Lincoln County. I would greatly appreciate any information. |

| Please share any family accounts during the war:: | My great grandfather John James Price and his brother Thomas David Price were enlisted by Capt. Joe Desha in Co. L, 2nd Regiment of Colonel Basil Duke's 1st Brigade August 9, 1862 at Sparta, Tennessee. He was promoted 2nd Corporal Nov. 1, 1862. He was captured June 22, 1864 at Greensburg, Kentucky and was received as a Prisoner of War at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana July 17, 1864. He along with his brother Thomas David Price, who took care of Gen. Morgan's horse, and his brother-in-law William Bradley were all captured together. They were released on oath May 19, 1865.
There were a total of 173 men in Roster Roll of Company L, 2nd Regiment Cavalry. Company L commanded by Captain Breckinridge, was transferred to the 9th Kentucky, upon the organization of that regiment was replaced by another, lettered similarly recruited in September 1862 and commanded by Captain Samuel D. Morgan. After my great grandfather was captured until the time Lincoln was killed, the prisoners of war were threatened many times, at gun point, at Camp Morton, "to keep their damn mouths shut," and were threatened to be killed when President Lincoln was shot. The oath that he had to sign is as follows: I, John J. Price, Co. L, 2nd Ky Cav. of the County of Warren, State of Kentucky do solemnly swear, in presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all acts of Congress passed during the existing rebellion with reference to slaves, so long and so far as not repealed, modified, or held void by congress, or by decision of the Supreme Court; and that I will in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all proclamations of the President made during the existing rebellion having reference to slaves, so long and so far as not modified or declared void by decision of the Supreme Court; so help me God. Signed: John J. Price Subscribed and sworn to before me at Camp Morton, Ind. this 19th day of May, A.D. 1865. | Comments: | My wife Betty Brock Clark, had two great uncles that served under Morgan's command. Francis M. Brock enlisted in Gano's Texas Cavalry Battalion in 1862 and his brother, William I. Brock, with Company A., 11th Calvary. Francis Brock was captured on July 20, 1863 at Buffington Island and his brother a month later. Both were sent to Camp Douglas, IL and both survived. Francis M. Brock died in a Confederate Home i Austin, Texas on August 15, 1835 and is buried in the Confederate Field of the Texas State Cemetery for Confederate Veterans. William I Brock died Winchester, Clark, KY on March28, 1924.

The name is Walker, and I read an account about a George Calvin Walker being a member of the 43rd Battalion. It described him as living after the war in Great Falls VA and Georgetown - passing in 1910. That fits right into our family history. We are decendants of Richard and Annie Walker..who lived below Leesburg (where my great gandmother Cora Mae Walker was born circa 1876) but they then settled in Dranesville. They were both residence of Winchester, KY. Their inlistment was at Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County. Lt Taylor Tracy's older brother Cpt. Buford Tracy of the 11th Ky Calvary had previously inlisted at Richmand, KY. |

Buford Tracy was imprisoned in Ohio. Obediah Tracy died as a POW in 1864 at Ft. Dougles. His wife Martha Thomson Tracy was able to retrieve his body and he is buried at Winchester Cemetery in Winchester, KY.
Taylor and Buford Tracy were exchanged prisoners. Buford surrendered Washington, GA 1865. Taylor was captured and surrendered at Franklin, TN. Cpt. Buford Tracy is also buried at Winchester Cemetery in the family plots. |

I have his papers showing his capture and transfer to Camp Douglas. His papers with his transfers to both the hospital, and his release to begin his long walk home. A family member(Great Crossing,Ky), wrote in her Bible of the return of a different man than left, but he followed the Wright's of HIS past. Serving in the war of 1812,(an uncle,who left us some few words),and his Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, who served with General Washington, thus securing the land grants that moved the family to Scott Co.Ky. More is available and I'm looking forward to sharing and hearing more at the upcoming meeting. I've just finished checking "Buffington" and hope to again find wise fellowship to assist me in my life journey to discover the true past, and how I got as far as I have. I hope to find more on the troop movements of the 2cd under Duke to follow more closly the past,and see what changes Morgan's Raiders really gave to the cause that will not pass away. My Grandmother told me when I was young that her father was one of Morgan's Men. She was from Hart County. She said he told her that he was there at the burning of the railroad bridge at Falmouth, and about burning a feather bed in a stairway to capture some Northern Soldiers that were upstairs. She said that later on he quit and went home. |

My cousin then said he was the one that fought in the civil war, and he got captured. So today I was just looking things up on ancestry and got into it more and more and, wow, he really did fight. Family still mad about this in 1930. G-gfather is now buried near Chapel Hill, Tenn, which is birthplace of Nathan Bedford Forrest. |

| Comments: | My ancestor was a member of 2nd Batt Ky Mtd Rifles; He was severely wounded at Bulls Gap in Nov '64 and was not paroled. I live close to Greeneville, Tn and every year if possible I place a mini-Battle Flag at the place General Morgan was killed. When talk to folks who are not so familiar with the War, I begin to tell of Gen. Morgan and start by saying "You could not make-up a storied life to compare to the real life of John Hunt Morgan. |

| Please share any family accounts during the war:: | Henry, John and Perry Sandridge joined 2nd Batt Mounted Rifles when Col Johnson was in East-Tenn. Henry was wounded at Bulls Gap, Tn Nov '64, John and Perry were sent home to recover from frost-bite in Jan '65. I think John made it back to Saltville, Va to fight in the March '65 battle and was wounded there. None of the three received a parole after the war (to my knowledge). |

lawson greenhill general died chanceerville virigina, mr. greenhill was my great grand father. mr. hilderbran was my husband granfather .he lived in burke county i know so little about mr greenhill .he had several sons one of which marion f. greenhill owed a lots of land in lincoln county nc. may have been or lived in cleveland county, marion is buried in mt vernon cementary he died 10-28-1929 borned 10-8,1861 he married charlwsce jane jeffers mar 1870 til 12 24 1920 she died may 14 1953 which i can remeber she was borned 2-10-1871 thier daughter Ira milton gantt was my grand mother . she married harrison gantt , Ira had a sister crayal who married roy taylor ,lincoln county nc. do you know anything about lawson greenhill or the family they were married into the hulls of vale, the brendles. have a few pictures but i want to know more |
