Please share any family accounts during the war::Belle Rowins lived in my house during the civil war and heard of Morgan's approach. She took her horse into the woods to hide from them. The family later filed claims with the State of Ohio for lost property from Morgan's men. She told of their approach, large number of men and a small skirmish with farmers between my house and Miamitown,Ohio.

Comments:Congratulations on a very informative site! I am looking for any information regarding a Joseph Scott (B. 4/7/1829 - D. 9/18/1865) from Lexington, KY. There is sketchy information that he may have served with Morgan's Men, and other info that perhaps he served in the confederate army and died shortly after. If anyone should have any information about this man, please email me. Thank you - Tim

Please share any family accounts during the war::It has been a mystery for my family ever since John C. Sanders enlisted to join the Confederate army as to what has happened to him. After researching heavily online I have found that he was originally apart of the 7th Cavalry of Tennessee and then later the 22nd Cavalry of Tennessee. He was capture in Mississippi in early May of 1863. He then was transfered to various places throughout Tennessee including La Grange, Memphis, Nashville, possibly Columbia, and then to Louisville, KY. From Louisville he was transfered to Fort McHenry on May 29,1863. He was paroled upon being received, and within a month joined with the Kentucky 14th to be around Gen. Bennett, whom he was with in Tennessee. He was captured at Bluffington, OH and transfered to several prison camps where he eventually was located at Ft. Dawson. This is where he died on January 7, 1865 (contrary to the roll report on this website of July 7, 1865). This is an interesting journey from a boy who identified himself as 19 on the 1860 U.S. Census. Our family for the past hundred and some odd years had assumed that he died in the Battle of Shiloh. After careful research, I have found that this was a great journey indeed. Thank you for dedicating this website, and if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask or keep in touch.

Ancestor's name, rank, unit:: John Wesley Collier or Colyer 1st Lt 6th Ky Reg C
Please share any family accounts during the war::John Wesley Colyer, of Perry, Houston Co., a veteran of Morgan's cavalry, was born near Somerset, Ky., May 8, 1834. His parents were John Colyer, a Virginian of Revolutionary ancestry, and Lydia, daughter of John Purvis, of South Carolina, a soldier of the Revolution. Mr. Colyer, a resident of Kentucky when the war began, and engaged in mercantile business, joined the famous cavalryman, John H. Morgan, when the latter was in command of a squadron in 1861, and served with him for nearly a year in Kentucky and Tennessee, participating in the daring exploits in middle Tennessee that first made the name of Morgan familiar throughout the country.
In the summer of 1862 he took part in Morgan's first great Kentucky raid, from Knoxville, Tennessee, and was in battle at Tomkinsville, Lebanon and Cynthiana, where he was wounded July 17, 1862. After his native State was occupied by the armies of Bragg and Kirby Smith, he organized a company of cavalry, of which he was elected first lieutenant, and M. B. Perkins Captain.
This was made Company C of the Sixth Kentucky cavalry, under the command of Col. J. Warren Grisby. On the return to Kentucky he served about Murfreesboro under General Buford, and took part in the battle of December 31st and the raid to Lavergne. Joining Morgan again, he participated in the battles of Milton, Snow's Hill and others, early in 1863, and in June set out on the memorable raid through Ohio.
Before reaching the Ohio River he was in battle at Green River bridge and Lebanon, and after riding through Indiana and Ohio around Cincinnati, he took part in the fight near Buffington's Island, on the Ohio river, July 19, 1863, where the greater part of Morgan's command was captured. Here he was wounded and made a prisoner. After some time in a hospital at Covington, Ky., he was held at Camp Chase three months and subsequently at Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, until June, 1865.
During this imprisonment of nearly two years he had frequent opportunities to gain his liberty by swearing allegience to the United States, but this he steadfastly refused to do as long as the Confederate government was yet maintained.
Lieutenant Colyer came to Georgia in December, 1865, and made his home at Fort Valley, where he engaged in farming and merchandising.
He served two terms as alderman of Fort Valley, and in 1883 was elected sheriff of Houston County. He was retained in this office six years, and after that he made his home at Perry, busying himself with farming. He assumed management of the Wells Hotel, a popular hostelry. Mr. Colyer was married in 1868 to Mary C. Lomman, and they had a son and two daughters.

J.H.Morgan is a local hero here, and I wanted to learn more about him. Some of our old privately owened homes display his picture on their walls. The last names of some of his men are still in our phonebook. It is local ledgend that Morgan and his men camped in Stanford several times during his raids. The field where this is said to have happened has turned up several Cival War artifacts. Does anyone know if there is any written record that J.H. Morgan
and his men had an encampment in Stanford, KY? I believe there is a record of one of his raids on Union soldiers in Crab Orchard, which is also in Lincoln County. I would greatly appreciate any information.

I think, and have no real basis for thinking this, but since his nephews fought on the UNion side, I think maybe there was a rift in the family that stems to Morgan's raiders. There was a recount of a branch of the family, living in Lexington, Emory Mason that was victims to horse theives. Could our Benjamin Mason be one of Morgan's Raiders. There was a story of a horse thieve, could our Benjamin be that person?

Comments:Gentlemen;

Please check out my web site and the quotes posted. They say more about the causes of this war than any text book writen by the damnyankees. I want you remember all who served the South. I had 4 of which only one came home. We are being spit apon today out of P C and we need to address that problem every time we see a newspaper reporter. Put these quotes in front of them and ask is that what they were tought in school and why not. Then read "old Pats" Cleburne back to them again. It should be enough if the reporter is worth his salt to do some looking himself.

In return I raise a glass to fellow Southern "Bravehearts" and to the memory of Morgan. May he someday rest in Peace. With how things are today I don't think any of them are resting very well. Website: rebelyell1.com

My cousin then said he was the one that fought in the civil war, and he got captured. So today I was just looking things up on ancestry and got into it more and more and, wow, he really did fight. But I am not sure if he really got captured.

Comments:My 4th gen. uncle, Capt. William Decateur Wash, was a mathematics professor at Georgia University at the onset of the war. He mustered in as a pvt. into a Kentucky company- June 1862 transfered to Dukes Regt. Co F 2nd KY CAV. and quickly rose to the rank of capt. During my family reseach I found a wonderful write up of his gallant charge at Cynthiana, KY. as described by one of his comrade in arms. He was captured at Bradyville,Tn. on March 1,1863 and subsequently imprisoned at Camp Butler,Ill. He died of typhoid pneumonia on March 27,1863. I have a letter written by Joseph T. Hollowell Co. F, Dukes Regt. to the Wash family of Newton, Mississippi explaining the sad intelligence. The letter further explains that two of his comrades from Mississippi Hugh Franklin and Mr. Woods were with him when he died. From my research thus far, Capt. Wash was a very impressionable soldier. I'm very proud of him. I'm looking for any other info available. thanks scott

Please share any family accounts during the war::I recently discovered a cousin who was supposedly in Morgan's Raiders. I read about it in a bio from a history book on Nelson County, KY on Judge Wallace Brown. It said my cousin George W. Brown was a member of Morgan's Raiders and was captured in Ohio Raid and sent to Chicago where I assume it was Camp Douglas and that he and two others dug a tunnel and escaped. George then made his way to Missouri to Relatives.
For the other side of the coin it was written supposedly up in a newspaper about a girl cousin living in Ohio who threw rocks at the raiders as they passed and they just went riding on ignoring her.

The Battalion was known as the 1st Ga. Partisan Rangers at the start, so both names show up in the records of that raid. When Morgan got back to Knoxville, the 16th was attached to another command. I am a fan of Morgan and I am proud that my ancestors "rode with Morgan".

James surrendered and was paroled at Athens, Ga, May 8th, 1865.

They had three other brothers serving in the Confederate infantry from Georgia. They survived the war.

I am proud of all of them.

I am trying to contact as many Civil War scholars, descendents, re-enactors, and buffs as possible to let them know about my new novel, Bright Starry Banner, a recreation of the battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro). Please take a minute to visit either the publisher's site www.sohopress.com for a short preview or my www.aldencarter.com/BSB.htm for a longer one. I would appreciate it if you would pass this information on to your fellow Civil War enthusiasts. (If you have trouble with the links, cut and paste to your menu bar.)

A few brief review excerpts:

"Exquisite and graphic... For a depiction of war [Bright Starry Banner] is as good as it gets."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Rendered with the creative force that amounts to a sense of mission."
—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“Crackles with action, suspense and drama. A must-read for Civil War buffs.” —Booklist

“Carter brings…Civil War conflict to life [like] no novelist since Joseph Pennell.”
—Peter Cozzens, No Better Place to Die: The Battle of Stones River

Comments:I just found my great grandfather, Henry Clay Mills in a Confederate soldier's pension in Tampa, Florida. He was in Co. E. 7th Calvalry enlisthing July 5, 1861. He was wounded numerous times. Said to have surrendered with Gen Basil Dukes in NC in 1865. His pension application was D22495 service unit Kentucky. Application Hillsborough Co, Tampa, Florida, 1923. Would you have any other information on him. He is listed as H. C. Mills. I haven't been able to get the entire document to print out yet. Where else could I search for information. He is buried in Tampa in the United Confederate Veteran section, Camp Loring # 1126. He applied and approved in Oct 1923, died Dec, 1923. Is there a place to access his wife's getting his pension? Charlotte Mills. Thank you very much for any suggestions.

Comments:Hi! I was wondering if you could help me. As a child, my grandfather gave me the gold buttons he said were from his father’s Confederate uniform along with the gold tassel that goes around the hat among other things. The problem is that all the buttons are Union and of a wide variety of Northern Militias; with a high proportion leaning to the Minnesota militia buttons that I see in books and museums. My great grandfather is on the roster of both Company A, Battalion 35 of Col. Elijah White's Laurel Brigade and Company G in the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry that is also known as Mosby’s Rangers. He is buried with his wife in the Confederate section of Arlington, filled a 5 page pension application in 1924 for disabilities received being wounded on 3 separate occasions, was with Lee at Appomattox and broke out with his brigade rather than surrender and still ended up in Capitol prison after the war. The family house he lived in at the time is now owned by IBM now and the other by Xerox. His farm is almost always mentioned in Mosby books. Other family members have other items that he used during the war and I’m guessing they have his real uniform, which I’m hypothetically guessing he didn’t use often. My grandfather’s providence is without question, but the buttons don’t make any sense. Does anyone out there know why he would have a box of Union buttons? Were buttons exchanged after the war at the Confederate Veteran Camp meetings? My great grandfather was an active member as I have memorabilia from that as well. Are the buttons of men he shot, took prisoner or exchanged with? Any information that would help clear this up for me would be appreciated. Thank you. Richard Kephart.

Ancestor's name, rank, unit:: Patrick Gardner - Morgan's Raiders, C.S.A.
Please share any family accounts during the war::I have an ancestor that was enlisted with Morgan's Raiders. His name was Patrick Gardner from Hart County Ky. My family has a sword & case that belonged to him. I have a book from the Hart County Historical Society that list one other soldier from Morgan's Raiders. The 2 names listed under Morgans Raiders are: James R. Adcock & Patrick Gardner. One quote from the book says, "John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders often made their raids at night and rested during the day. In warm weather they often camped atop the knobs overlooking Green River and Camp Wood (I assume this is in Hart County since Green River runs thru it). Atop one such knob there is a very large stone (approx. 18 feet across) where today one can see many initials carved - one set reads "JHM." " Other info. about JHM states his wife died shortly after their marriage and he did not become active in the Cival War until after her death. He was sworn into the Confederate Army on Oct. 27, 1861 on the steps of the Green River Church in Woodsonville. The historic steps of the little log church still remain on this site which is located in the cemetery in front of Ford Craig. Records show Morgan spent enough time in Hart and surrounding counties to become well aquainted with the area and citizens. His brother in law and second in command, Basil W. Duke, who wrote several volumes on Morgan's movements, indicates that the majority of southern Kentuckians were sympathetic to the cause of the Confederacy. Morgan was able to recruit several Hart County men to ride with him however the lists of Hart County men who fought in the Cival War show that most of them enlisted for the North. Stories handed down about Morgan were of good horses being taken and worn-out creatures being left in their place, if any exchange was made at all. This practice was known as 'Horse Pressing'. Others tell of their smokehouses and chicken houses being raided. In Cave City Ky, in May 1862, Morgan captured a train loaded with Union Soldiers and their wives. A newspaper reported the incident which allegedly took place during the capture: one young woman pleaded with Morgan to release her soldier-husband. "I did not know that you had a husband" Morgan said. "Yes Sir," the woman answered. "I have. Here he is. Please don't kill him." Morgan bowed and smiled. "My dear madam, he is no longer my prisoner. He is yours."
This info was taken from "A Fort Craig Reader, Cooking and History in Hart County Kentucky". The book should be available for purchase through the Hart County Historical Society in Munfordville Kentucky. Mine was given to me as a gift and I have enjoyed reading all the history and recipes in it. Let me know if this info helped anyone. I'm sure the historical society in Munfordville has more information if anyone would like to contact them. Oh and my brother was named after our ancestor.. my brother is named Patrick Gardner.

Please share any family accounts during the war::Married a war widow, whose 1st husband was killed at Petersburg, Va., leaving his widow and two daughters. The family history only states that her 1st husband never returned from the war but did not know what may have happened to him. During research in 2002-2003 his name, unit, and place of death was discovered.

After G.C's marriage to his first wife he fathered seven sons...his 1st wife was either murdered or committed sucide...no offical record has been discovered as of Sept 2003. G.C. later wed three additional ladies, some with children from a previous marriage. The only other children sired by G. C. was two boys and a girl by his 4th wife.

Records show that he enlisted in Clarkesville, Georgia in the Partisan Rangers which later became the 16th Georgia Calvary and finally was combined to become the 13th Georgia Calvary.

He filed for pension in Dawson County, Ga, and later transferred his pension to Hall County, Georgia. His 4th wife also filed for her pension based upon his service record when she was in the years of her life.

Comments:My family hails from Mayfield, Kentucky, and one of my Grandmother's uncles, James A. Pirtle, rode with General Morgan. It is unclear from family history whether he was a Captain, 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry or a private. My father (himself a retired General Officer in the U.S. Army) is inclined to think he was a private soldier; I saw his grave (near Water Valley, KY) years ago, and my recollection is Captain. I defer to my Dad, naturally. In any event, excellent site; well laid out and, above all, worthwhile. It's important for those of us so far removed from the era that our forebears fought well and bravely, and that they returned to rebuild the Commonwealth after the war. It's also remarkable that the 7th Ohio hosted their former foes in one of the early reunions -- it's a measure of respect that was, obviously, earned. God bless all. -- Ed McAlister

Please share any family accounts during the war::I don't have any stories from James A. Pirtle. I am a former Army officer, myself, however, and on a drive from Chicago to Richmond, Kentucky for a family gathering, drove essentially the route of Gen. Morgan's raid. I was constantly struck by the feeling that my great-great uncle had taken the same route, and I saw the tactical possibilities of the terrain; thought about how one might deploy at this or that crossroad or hilltop, and wondered how our forebears moved over farmland so similar to what they left behind. It was a pretty moving experience.
