| Comments: | I know that my great-grandfather was Gustav Gensch, and was from Switzerland. He came to the United States of America in the late 19th century and married Maggie Ellard (Irish). They had 5 daughters: Margarethe, Irene, May, Helen and Rose. Helen was my maternal grandmother, and she married Francis Halstead Edgette. They had two children: Frances (my mother, now 89 and living in Southold, NY at the end of Long Island), and Charles. Charles is deceased.
I am 65, married with two grown children, and am employed as the Regional Director of Church World Service CWS for the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. CWS is an ecumenical, international service agency founded in the USA after World War II and which took relief supplies to Europe after 1945. CWS now does Relief, Refuggee and Small Self-Help Development in more than 80 countries around the world. I was one of 3 United States citizens named a "Marshall Scholar" by the EU in 1987 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Marshall Plan. | Comments: | I found a great website where I was able to tie together my Gensch lineage through the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Evanston, IL, website (http://members.aol.com/BethlehemL/history/bapt01.htm.) This church lists history, baptisms and confirmations. I was able for the first time in my immediate family to find out much about our family's history to 3 and 4 generations ago and link these people with stories from my Father, Robert Gensch. In reading some of your entries below there is likely some connection to some of you as well.
In brief: My great grandfather and grandmother from Germany: August Gensch and Anna Hartig Gensch (joined Church in 1875): Children of this marriage: 1873 Heinrich Gensch, 1875 Louise Gensch, 1876 Minna Gensch "Minnie", 1878 Anna Marie Sofia Gensch, 1881 Louis August Gensch "Louie"(my grand father who died in 1950). Their mother Anna Hartig Gensch died in about 1884. August remarried Auguste Klatt in 1889 and they had several children who are half brothers and sisters to my relatives from the first marriage: 1890 August Anton Wilheim Carl Gensch, 1893 Heinrich Emil Ludwig Friedrich Gensch, "Henry", 1897 Emil Gensch, 1899 Eduard Gensch "Edward", 1901 Mabel Gensch and in 1903 Carl Ludwig August Gensch. You may want to check it out. We know little to nothing about most of these people. Maybe some of you know them. Let me know. |

| Comments: | Hello all you Genschies out there! I was born Annegrete Gensch in Hamburg-Finkenwerder in 1948. My grandfather was August Gensch who was a fisherman as was my father Hinrich Jakob Gensch and my brother Hinrich Nikolaus Dietrich Gensch. Our grandmother was Margarethe Mueller from Hamburg-Finkenwerder. Margarete and August had 9 children. As far as I know my grandfather stems from Madgeburg or Dessau in East Germany. | Comments: | Came across this site by accident. Have always wondered about my maternal grandmother's maiden name. Her name was Anna Sophia Gensch, married Frederick August Mueller in the Chicago area (was called "Niles Center" at the time). She died in 1919 (approx.) and is buried in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Glenview, Illinois. She was from a very large family and I remember her "baby" brother, Emil very well. I remember my mother talking about relatives in the Racine, Milwaukee area and an Uncle John. She was said to be quite tall (close to 6') and Uncle Emil was about 6'6"---very unusual for the 1880's. I'd like to think I'm related to some of you out there. Does this ring a bell with anyone out there? |

| Comments: | My last name is Gensch and I grew up outside of Milwaukee, never knowing any other Gensches other than my first and second cousins. Looks like there are a lot of other Gensches in Wisconsin and many in Milwaukee. I'd guess some of us must be more distant cousins. I never knew this was such a common name. I can't say that is was an easy name to grow up with (but I've kept it all these years :)) and am proud of it just the same. |

We live in Minnesota, and I see on of my daughters Caitlyn posted as message here as well, awhile back (Hi Cait!). My father-in-law Albert Gensch is an only child -- and now I will have to ask him more about his family history -- but I know he used to visit "Aunt Dorothy" when he was a younger man. And -- he told me he used to visit relatives in Wisconsin (older couple, I think) when he was a child. He was expected to help with cows and other farm chores in the summer months. Only my family's "Gensch" ancestry stops after WWI, when the Gensch's left Germany and Nazi's burned all our historical records there. Bummer huh? | Comments: | My grandfather's name was August Gensch born nov 11, 1892, died May of 1983. In 1930 he married Edna Viola Womble, born march 30, 1906. They had three daughters, Ida Mae (Rosman), my mother, Violet lee (Bittick) and Betty (Harmon).
August had three brothers, Willie, Adolph and Henry, and one sister (can't recall her name). I don't know very much about his family I know he told me his mother's name was willamena mann (sic). |
