I am a 42 year old african american black female. I am a journalist and a mother of 2 daughters ages 20 and 22. I have been widowed since 1999 and am currently seeking to find some direction. I enjoy writing but my job is very, shall I say, one way. I write a monthly newspaper regarding issues pertaining to military benefits etc. I have many talents and hobbies. Or maybe I should say many hobbies. For example, I enjoy acting and have been in several plays. I am very good at a specific form of martial arts called "Tai Chi." I do some painting but nothing that would be suitable for sale. I guess I appear to be my worst critic. Mainly because I really don't believe that I am good at anything. There! I said it. I don't believe that I am good at anything. Well, maybe one thing and that is I raised 2 beautiful and smart women. One works for a law firm and interested in becoming a lawyer and the other is away in college seeking a degree in Mechanical Engineering. God is good. the mother of four outstanding African-American adults. Two years ago I relocated from Cleveland, Ohio to southern Oregon where I currently work for the local ABC television network affiliate. Only five years ago I obtained my bachelor's degree in English literature and language with minors in theater and communications. My goal is to complete my Master's in African-American literature (with a focus on Harlem Renaissance women) and teach at the college level. I would value contact with any and all of you with interests and talents in these areas whether as creators of those expressions or as readers. Our stories are not generally appreciated for the wealth of wisdom they offer. I was amazed at the number of our authors whose names I had never heard until I enrolled in a Masters program in Cleveland. I can only imagine how many more I still have not heard of. I am the author of "Water Dancing," short stories and a contributor to, "A Rock Against the Wind: African- American Poems and Letters of Love and Passion," edited by Lindsay Patterson. I an discussing some of the themes in my new book, still being edited, about our ancestors I traced to West Africa in the 1660s. The site is Atlantic Unbound, of the Atlantic Monthly magazine. I also commented on the question about Magical Realism, as it applies to African-American writers. Toni Morrison dramatizes re-memory and re-remembering. Pope John Paul II asked for a "purification of memory." Malcolm Gladwell, in his Atlantic Unbound interview for his new book, The Tipping Point, discusses "transactive" memory -- the theory that "one of the places we store a lot of the information in our memory is in other people." The new transactive theory says important pieces of memory of our experiences and of historic events are stored in the minds of friends, co-workers, mates, lovers, spouses, neighbors, relatives, children, and people with whom we come in contact. My question is: Can our memory of experiences and historic events be purified?
