| Comments: | I stumbled upon this site whilst I grumbled to myself about my feelings on grammar. I just finished writing a 600 page book and I paid little attention to grammar as I let the story flow forth out of my mind. I have yet to do anything with the book, because(among other reasons) I fear the reprisal of grammaticians and think I need to edit.
I believe Math has definite rules that are necessary for the subject to function, while reading and writing should be subjects with as few rules as possible. Thus, helping language to remain as artistic as possible while still being understandable from one person to the next. Grammar is something I tire of. I've read countless sentences with proper grammar and said to myself, "what in the world did that mean?" The word ain't is outlawed, while crazy vocabulary words are acceptable and the reader is the fool for being ignorant of what viviosynthratic means(I made that up, I think). I'll bet that over 90 percent of the people in the world who speak English fluently know what ain't means, while many acceptable words fall well below 10 percent. My personal pet peeve is the word whom. The fact that the majority of people struggle with the word proves a lot. Personally, I don't care about subjects and objects in the case of the words who and whom. Show me one person who is confused when I use "who" instead of "whom". If they're confused it's because they ain't sane..........did I use ain't incorrectly? Anyway, thanks for the history lesson on grammar. At least now I know that the church is to blame in some way for trying to control the way I write. I would wonder which is more taboo: Using the word ain't or something such as a woman not shaving her body hair. It depends on which part of the country you live in. |

| Comments: | Your examples "I was teaching him to accurately shoot his annoying neighbor," or "I would like you to rapidly run through those crazy grammar rules again." are lousy examples. "I was teaching him to shoot accurately his annoying neighbor." sounds better and has descriptive meaning. Tell me what "to accurately" and "to rapidly" describe? Any person with common sense can see "to shoot accurately" is descriptive and prescriptive in meaning. Also the book "A short introduction to grammer" authored by Lowth was written quite a few years before he became bishop. Do some history research! You can argue till your face turns blue but I will never follow. |

Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (Lord Jesus Christ) |

| Comments: | I appreciated Bishop Lowth... Found it at The Humble Farmer's site. Mentioned it in something I wrote "To end crimes against our language, kill its idiot-syncracies." If my "home-town paper" doesn't print it, I expect another will. Will send a paper copy if you give me a papermail address. Am at a library terminal with no use of disks. I didn't comment about ain't. 2 out of 3 isn't bad. PLEASE! Get rid of that damned purple on black. It's difficult to read and turns people off. |

| Comments: | I appreciate your commentary on split infinitives and other Mavenesque approaches to grammar; however, your commentary seems to repeat what you have "heard" other folks say about Lowth. In fact, his approach to prepositions (and other traditional grammarians' approach to split infinitives) is far less dramatic and prescriptive than most folks claim. That is, unless careful thinkers actually read the original work they are critiquing, then they are perpetuating myths not unlike the myths folks throw around about the prescriptive rules of grammar. Nonetheless, here is a quotation from Lowth that reflects his non-prescriptive approach to grammar study:
This [ending a sentence in a preposition] is an idiom which [note that he uses which rather than that even though this is a restrictive clause, a convention Fowler recommended much later] our language is strongly inclined to; it prevails in common conversation and suits very well with the familiar style in writing; but the placing of the preposition before the relative is more graceful, as well as more perspicuous; and agrees much better with the solemn and elevated style. This does remind me of Churchill's response to a stuffy grammarian's dislike of ending a sentence with a preposition: "that's an arcane rule up with which I shall not put." As you can see, he is not forcing English grammar into Latin grammar. Henry Alford (1864) is the first to mention the split infinitive. Similarly, his rationale is NOT based on Latin grammar. He notes that it merely indicates the infinitive mood, and like many other conventions and common sense aspects about language, native English speakers prefer like elements to be as close as possible. It is not a rule; it is a suggestion. This principle is the same principle that notes that readers prefer writers to keep elements such as "rather than" close to one another. Joe Williams devotes a half of a chapter to this idea, although he fails to see the same logic when it comes to split infinitives. Alford bases his argument on usage rather than Latin grammar. This seems similar to Pinker's approach; that is, predicating his rationale on usage and not on Latin grammar. Even Fowler says, in the end, the writer must rely on his ear to tell him when to split an infinitive. Perhaps our problem is with the people who have misread people such as Fowler, Lowth, and Alford. I think 20th century folks have inherited their descriptions as if they were speaking about unbreakable rules rather than principles (Williams' approach is principle based as well). I guess my point is this: I believe most the attacks made on "traditional grammar" are based in transformational grammar. Not that transformational grammar is incorrect but that linguists use the spoken language as their data rather than written language--a technique that is produced outside of Pinker's language instinct mentalese. Richard Lanham addresses this issue in Analyzing Prose and Revising Prose. He encourages writers to look AT rather than THROUGH their style choices. When Chomsky was still dealing with language issues, he often made it clear that he wasn't talking about written language. He even encourages the use of traditional grammar--Kellog sentence diagramming--for young students. Perhaps I came across too harsh. I agree with much of what you say, but I am a bit concerned that your blame on Lowth et al. is misplaced. No need to respond. This has helped me think some issues through. Thanks for your time and efforts. |
