| Comments: | I read with great interest the description of your father's service in WWII. I was an 18 year old radio officer on the Pachaug Victory in 1945-1946, on a one-year voyage that started and ended in Brooklyn N.Y. The ship was meant to be a cargo carrier, but was fitted with accomodations for 1500 troops. We picked up French volunteers in Marseilles and carried them to Saigon for the beginning of the Vietnam War. Most of the trip was in tropical climates and conditions were to say the least hot and uncomfortable.We then made several trips to Labuan (off Borneo)and Morotai (New Guinea) where we picked up battle-hardened Australian veterans and took them home to Brisbane and Sydney. From Australia we took on another group of mostly young and unbloodied troops for occupation duty in Japan, first to Kure and then to Yokohama (Tokyo's seaport) . Your dad was probably aboard the first of those trips. Incidentally Kure was a large naval base, very near Horishima. several crewmates and I visited Hiroshima to witness unimaginalbe horrors of atomic weapons. After our last trip to Japan we began our retutn trip New York. We picked up British troops in Singapore and Bombay for their return to Liverpool. The Pachaug Victory was then given to the Brits. My crewmates and I stayed in not-so-wonderful (before the Beatles) Liverpool for several weeks. We were repatriated in July 1946 and transported on a not-very-comfortable American ship to New York. Not one piece of mail addressed to me during that year was delivered until we returned to New York. Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but zero mail finished off my first serious romantic relationship. My wife and I recently celebrated our 50th anniversary. We've travelled a lot mostly with our two daughters. I took advantage of my university position to spend a year each in Tehran and Paris and shorter professional stays in Berlin, Vienna, Ghana, and Brazil. We've not been to Australia in all that time, but maybe will make it some time soon. With best regards, Edward Sussna |

My father, Private Ova W. Ratliff, was killed in WW II. He was killed in Hurtgen Forest, Germany, on November 14th, 1944. Dad was only in the Army for 8 months from his induction to his war time death. During that time he wrote 84 letters home and I have compiled them into a book, "I Can Hear The Guns Now". I let him tell most of the story of how WW II affected him and I tell how it affected his family. How can a Navy psych not approve someone for submarine service based on the fact they enjoy outdoor activities such as surfing and motorcycling and when on deployment, experienced what every other sailor experiences in the first three weeks of being away, a condition commonly known as "homesickness" I went through the correct channels to deal with this, eg chaplain and psych with the full intent to stay on board for the deployment. Unfortunatly later i fell down a ladder, and have full medical evidence plus operation scars to prove to my superiors, and was posted off the ship to gain further medical attention. I'm sorry i can't put it into easyier words for you but this is the only way i can explain it. Do you have an answer? Thanks. |

I think it quite accurately and realistically portrays the problems associated with readjusting to australian society after being exposed to such a stressful and highly-charged situation for an extended period of time. but what about adfa graduates?? is it just me, or are they also being exposed to a similar synthetic psychological situation for an extended period of time at, what is, the most impressionable time of their lives?? Could this in part explain their initial difficulties in fitting into post-training RAN/RAAF routines? or is it just that they have had a very confined and limited set of life experiences during their degree program which may not help them in assuming their leadership roles? do you have any thoughts on this?? I am looking for the book written by the aust army col. in psych corps regarding modern military training methods and their psychological impact on the trainees.
