I have a son who has hydrocephils and has what is called hydrocephalany (which means he will grow and stay an infant forever). The doctors said when he was 6 weeks old that he would live for only 12 - 15 months and he is now 4 years old. He is our little Angel. God gave him to us for a reason. We thank God for him every day. We celebrate every day we have him in our lives.

I would just like to tell you that I am touched by your courage towards EB. I ran across it in a completely non-related site, and was curious what it was. The girl was nineteen and looked six. So I Googled it and came across your site. Your child is beautiful, such an angel. And you are a very couragous woman. One day, maybe EB will have a cure, or at the very least, a non-narcotic treatment that works wonders. Until then, mothers like you keep up hope and inspire others.
Words cannot describe the feeling I have right now. Miranda 09 April 2006

Wow, Silvia . . . your last entry really opened my eyes. I'm kind of reminded of the day that I found out that there were "pro-ana" and "pro-mia" (anorexia and bulimia) groups on the web, and that people with these diseases supported them as a "lifestyle choice." I had no idea that there were people who embraced their afflictions so closely that they would fear a cure, or refuse it. To me, EB is nowhere near the same as being uhmm...black or Belgian or whatever. Of COURSE you'd want to be cured of your disease - how is that offensive or backward-thinking?
I agree that it's a personal decision, and I know personally how a disease can become a part of your identity. But me? Type-I diabetes might be a part of me by now - a part of how I see myself and how others see me - but if I had a chance to have no part of it anymore, I would gladly take it. "No-brainer" indeed! Thanks for your thought-provoking website :)

I just read your most recent entry and was glad to hear you have rec'd a proper diagnosis. This was the comment my daughter's geneticist made after some obvious things to test for came up negative:
"Well, there probably are some more things to test her for, but there isn't any cure for those things so it's not really worth it." (jaw drops to ground) We'll be going back in a year (too many expensive bills for now) and try to do some of those tests. I have to say that after almost 4 years of "no diagnosis", it's not the most pressing thing on my mind anymore. Take care. Love your site! Becky

It's just such a terribly brittle illness to have to wake up to every day. Suddenly its morning and your in agony over what needs to be done and you face the morning by walking into the room and looking at your beloved child, knowing full well that you are about to cause him pain, but the pain is needed, for without the pain, he would not be where he is today. Alive.
I feel for you and your 'baby' and all other EB families and victims of such a horrific and debilitating illness. One that robs not only the one suffering, but those that are caring for him/her as well. My best to you and your son...to all who read this and suffer through it daily, and yet, in spite of the horror, come out stronger and more determined to live lfe in a full and productive way. God bless.

I was watching a special on TLC about EB. It was about a 36 year old man with EB. It was heartbreaking to say the least. I am a teacher, as I think I was born to be, and I needed to know more. This was the first sight I saw, and I think it has got to be one of the best sights from a parent I have ever seen. It was not only EXTREMELY informative, but it was upbeat. (I LOVE SHREK!) I can only imagine how difficult it is to stay happy when your child hurts. I commend you!

God Bless You, and your beautiful son! I would have loved to meet him! You are a truely strong and blessed woman to go through such bitterness and come out with such a loving, supportive heart. Thank you for your words. It is hard being a mom of a special needs child (my daughter has autism) but it is also one of the most wonderfully precious gifts God could ever have given to us! Most life changing events seem so wrong, yet they are the most rewarding. Keep up the great work!

You probably get this a lot, but...I just want to tell you that I think you are an amazing, awesome Momma!! I was researching excema & somehow, jumping from a link to a link to a link, ended up on your site. I soon found myself in tears, feeling so grateful that all my dear son has is excema & then feeling guilty for feeling grateful. I hope you find my honesty refreshing & not insulting. I am probably one of those people who would come up to you in public & ask you the name of your son's disorder & want more info. Also, I know what it is like to be in public with a loved one who is stared at. I have worked for years with adults with developmental & physical disabilities. You have a lot more insight & wisdom on the topic of dealing with other people's reactions to your child than I have ever been able to attain. I used to get so angry at the staring & whispering, & sometimes my reaction in trying to be an advocate for the person I was supposed to be supporting only served to further alienate them. Anyway, I hope if I ever see you & your son out & about or another child with EB that I will be one of the poeple who catches that childs eye & shares a smile. My heart goes out to you & your son. You will be in my prayers from now on. ~Jessa Fee

Hi! I just wanted to say THANK YOU for writing from your heart. You have written about things that are SO hard to even talk about to people that don't have children or children w/disabilities. I appreciate your honesty, your encouraging words, and even your words of frustration. I have thought many of these things myself even though our children have totally different challenges. SO thank you very much, and God bless you and yours.

Support for parents with special needs children is very important. I know as I work for 4 families with children between the ages of 2 and 5 diagnosed with special needs. Sharing the feelings and experiences you have with one another is essential to maintaining strength and stability in your families as well as your relationship with your spouses!
