I like your website very much! I work in the departemnt of Adventure tourism, Birmingham college, and am also a keen climber.

according to the statements on your homepage i need to clearify some topics.

vang vieng , tam nam cave was bolted and climbed by a german and us climbing group with the help of our friends from wildside. it is not possible to climb in laos without a permit, wildside shared their permit and we did all the routes. wildside offers climbing courses, but every climber can go there free off charge!!! just apply at wildside office, because the government may make restrictions not wildside!
all routes were done by, gerd and volker schoeffl, carsten seidel, radovan capek, sam ligthner and tina mueller. we thank wildside for their help and frienship.
sure some routes are still dirty, so was phra nang when we bolted the first routes in 1990!

Your Comments:Just wanted to drop a line and first of all say thanks to Simon for such a great website. Every time I try doing other searches for climbing in Thailand, I end up back here because it seems to be the most comprehensive. I'm currently in Chiang Mai and spent the day at Crazy Horse Buttress near Muang On Cave. The climbing wall in Chiang Mai called The Peak refused to give me information or sell me a map of the place, so we went alone and with little or no expectations of finding the place. Luckily, we had the directions posted on this site and they were perfect. A friendly local showed us all the way up the the wall itself (although once parked there, it's fairly obvious). The only thing I'd like to add is that the parking area and the three "dirt roads" mentioned were not highly visible, so you really have to keep your eye out for them. As far as access and permits goes.......All I can say is that I really got the run around from The Peak who does tours to the area for 1500baht each. Obviously, they're more concerned with making a profit than sharing the experience with others. The manager finally offered to "let me" hire one of his employees for the day for only 1000baht since we had our own gear, but I didn't get that offer until I told him that his shop was listed in Lonely Planet as an information source for climbing in the area, and that I'd call them and let them know that The Peak was no longer selling maps or giving out information (I know, it was borderline blackmail, but....). In the long run it turned out to be a great day and we were the only ones on the rock. We rented a motorbike to get there (150baht) and that was our only cost. We didn't get to climb for long, but the routes seemed good and fairly clean. It's definitely underused. If anyone is in Chiang Mai and has their own gear, give it a go. I don't know too much about the philosophy behind keeping information from other climbers, but 1000baht for a guide to show you how to get there and then point out the routes seems a bit greedy to me. I believe they put up the routes, but still........There wasn't even anybody there, so it's not like we would have been intruding on a lesson or another group. Anyway, happy climbing.......

I'm looking to come to Krabi later on this year. People have told me that its fine to go in September (the Rainy Season) as it doesn't rain for very long each day and dries out quickly. Is that right?

Also, I'm looking to book some cheap flights but the cost seems to be very high everywhere - does anyone have any idea of how much I should be looking to pay and where the best deals might be?

Your Comments:Då jag varit ett flertal gånger på railay beach och sett klätterbutiker växa upp och klätterbutiker byta ägare m.m måste jag säga att den som håller sig och kör sin bana är Hot rock climbing school och Luang med hans svenska fru saralisa.De låter sig inte styras av vad andra håller på med de vet att ha kvalitepå sin utrustning och sina guider och det är väl därför som deras guider stannar hos Hot roch,annnars så äs det vanligt att klätterguiderna vandrar runt hos olika shoper med de har samma personal och det maste ju tyda på ett bra samarbete i butiken.Jag har själv erfarenhet av Hot rocks guider och de ar proffotionella och håller en låg profil liksom ägaren Luang som har gett besökare många goda skratt och är snabb att ge tips och hjälp till sina kunder,en kille som alldrig är omöjlig.Han tar god hand om sin klätterskola och får bra hjälp av sin lilla Tuvalisa som idag hunnit att bli 3 år.Så jag rekomenderar varmt Luang och hans Hotrock climbingschool som du hittar bredvid YaYa resturang och Luang håller öppet de flesta av dygnets timmar allt för att serva sina kunder gott..

Your Comments:We are in Chiang Mai right now, and that bloody people from The Peak don't want to tell us were the climbing area is. They take us there (about 30 Kms.) for 800 bats per person or 700 bats without gear. They are not climbers, they are fucking business men. So please erase Chiang Mai from your web page. They told us there are around 40 routes between 5th and 7b plus, but it seems to be a private zone. Kill them all!!!!

I was in Tonsai in March. Met a guy with your same idea and I bought his rope for 800baht (~$18). Apparently he couldn't find many people interested in his gear.
This is just my experience--note that most folks are VERY leary about buying a used rope.

Your Comments:Just to follow up from Isobel's comments about gear. I would take everything if you are coming mainly to climb. Even if you are travelling i would still being shoes and harness. Rope is the only real thing I might hire. The only reason for this is that the sun, sand and sea is real hard on your rope. The down-side is the hire ropes have a history that you know nothing about.

And seeing these photos again really makes me miss Thailand even more. If any of you out there are considering going to Thailand, GO!!!It is paradise, and cheap!!! Your Comments:Does the climb that goes up to an opening in the mountain itself,(then you go down a ladder and through the mountain) exit in Princess Cave? I can't remember, and I'm trying to write an article. Also, I know it's an easy climb but what's the rating? Thanks for your help!

Your Comments:Seeking partner to climb-Thailand, Laos, Vietnam...From Jan. until end of March (or any part). I lead 5.8, follow 5.9 trad-mostly at Gunks in New York-and I lead 5.9-5.10 sport and follow a little higher. Have full rack. Owned my own climbing gym. I'll go with stronger or weaker climbers but you must be safe and know how to lead belay.

I am coming to Thailand the 20th of januari 2002, staying until end of march. Looking forward to go rockclimbing (..although I am still suffering a bit from an injury...) with a group of nice people.
