My O'Dell connection is on my mother's side - my grandfather, whom I never met, I believe was born in Dublin, Ireland in January 1867 - he emigrated to England, married Jessie Chapple and lived and died (1942) in North London. He had a brother John (Jack), who married Lena Simkins, and sister Mary, who married George Thomas. Henry's father was also Henry O'Dell (1835 - 1884), who married Ann Murphy, and I gather lived in Ireland. He had sisters Alice and (Kate) Caroline. I have very little information on the earlier generations, but suspect that there is a connection with the Bedfordshire Odells (with or without the apostrophe). I would be very grateful if anyone recognises any of the above and can help me trace further links in the families.

| My notice: : | This past summer I attended the Odelltown Reunion in Quebec Canada. It was very emotional especially when we visited Jackson Cemetary. | My notice: : | Hi I live in British Columbia, and my name was previously Sandra C. Odell. I am trying to find out some information about my lineage as well. All I know is that my Great grandparents were from Ireland, and that my Grandfather James Odell was born in Surrey England in 1887. His mother was either Hannah or Sarah and not sure of maiden name. I know for sure that he had one brother Donald who originally immigrated with him to Canada eventually and lived for awile in Scarborough Ontario. He also had at least one other brother names Alfred. I'm not sure if there were other siblings. And I'm not sure if they came straight to Canada or to the States first. My Grandfather James (Jim) and his brother Donald both acquired land to homestead in Saskatchewan originally in the Moosejaw district. Jim purchased 6 quarter sections of land. But my father Reginald Barcly Odell, Jims son, grew up in Shaunevon or Canuck Saskatchewan and Jim homesteaded and ran the mailroute to Montana. Donald and Jim were both councillors and on the school board there as well. Donald married a lady named "Florence" also from England. Jim married my Grandmother (June Hockley) who was born in Canada. Donald did not have any children, my father was an only child and we know nothing about what became of Alfred other than that he probably stayed in Ontario. My Grandfather told me when I was young that his Odell family had royal connections, I seem to remember something about an Earl. Also I know that his family in England were all very musical and that there is a square in London I believe called Odell Park after the family as I believe the family somehow ended up in London from Surrey. When James and Donald were in their 40's they moved to British Columbia. James living out his life in Surrey British Columbia and Donald in Duncan BC. James and June divorced in the late 40's and she lived out the rest of her life in Windsor Ontario. Florence, and Joseph both passed away in Duncan. Their son Donald lived in Duncan most of his life and eventually moved to Crofton near Duncan.
My immediate family consisted of my Father Reginald Barcly Odell (now deceased), my mother Violet May Odell, my brothers David Lynn Odell (deceased at 25), Dana (Dan) Odell, myself, Maureen, Gordon Odell, Ellen, Melanie. We all live in the interior of British Columbia. Any Odell to us is a friend. If you know anything about this part of the Odell clan please help fill in the blanks and if not it would be nice to know other Odells, so please write. Thank you for your time and help. Sandra |

| My notice: : | Hello everybodycalled Wadhelle[1086 Doomsday], Wadhul, Odell, and over a hundred variations of our name - I was born to an Alexander Woodall Waddell so never was quite sure what my name was!
I have had great fun for the last 20 years trying to work out who we are and I think I have some of the answers. My oldest Odell is Peter de Odell de Haga de Bermisyde -ancestor of the Haig family in Scotand who lived in the 1100s -he was probably a grandson of Walter de Wahul son of Walter THE Fleming who was granted the Barony of Odell by William The Conqueror in 106 Walter and Sier were the sons of Lambert of Lens whose 2nd wife was a sister of King William and they had a 1/2 sister called Judith They came to England in 1066 with their grandfather Count Eustace of Boulogne but were too young to fight at the Battle of Hastings Eustace fell out with William and Seir fled to his cousins in Scotland. I reckon Walter was held hostage for his grandfather's good behaviour because all the earliest Charters granted by William to places such as Wells Cathedral have Walter as a witness It is probably right to say that the original people called Odell were younger son of the de Wahull family. Do'nt forget there were no surnames and people were called after the land they held directly from the King, or one of his great nobles. When it comes to Ireland I have found de Lens in County Down at the end of the 12 Century, D'oudle [Dowdall]in the 14th Century, Woodall in Down in the late 16th Century [my family] and Odell in County Limerick inthe17th Century. And before you say anything in one generation of Odells I found 72 first cousins + 6 more I found later !Now I know there was a Limerick Odell on the 'Titanic'and I know she came off at Cohb [Queenstown] the 'Titanic's' last point of call. I am not going to tell you any more now for I am a one finger typist and I am trying to finish a book about 'Waddells of Ireland' that has bits about all our othe families as well. Then I want to do another book about all I have our English connections. A friend called Gavin is doing Scotland and then I would like to show how I have traced the family back through Emperor Charlemagne to a chap called Fiojot who died in Finland in 600AD So you see we ARE VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE - related to Alfred the Great as well! My grandparents also were also from Luton. The name odell came from the small villiage of odell in bedfordshire. The name odell is often being miss-spelt O'dell to which is the Irish name. My father (Herbert Jack Odell) and I ( Peter Odell)met the Herbert jack Odell who is famous for the 'lledo cars' at a Duxford lledo exhibiton some years ago. My father and i both collect the Lledo cars, who i beleive have been taken over by Corgi, but at least they have kept the 'Lledo'name. Obviously Lledo is odell spelt backwards. His second wife was Margaret Tilford Lawrence's parents were Lewis Odell and Basheba Valentine (no dates) I do know that in the same area (Rye, New York) there are earlier records of William Odell son of Isacc Odell. I am searching for the following info: Rev. Thomas Odell immigrated to the States early in the 17th century from Bedforshire, England. He was one of the survivors of the "Virginia Merchantman" lost in a storm off the coast.....am guessing somewhere around Virginia,Maryland, etc. He married a widow, Sarah Rigley Brauer in Maryland. She was the widow of John Brauer the 2nd. From this marriage there was one son...Reginold born 24 Oct 1705. Reginold Odell married Sarah Beall, daught of Col. Rivian Beall. From this union there was a son, James, born 12 Jul 1731. James married, but his wife's name is unknown. They had a son named Thomas, born 15 May 1752. He became the Reverend Thomas Odell. The Rev. Thomas Odell married a daughter of Nathan Garrott. They had two sons: Natahn Garrott Odell, born 9 Nov 1772 and a second son named James. The Rev. Odell's first wife died and he married Grace Auston. They had 10 children. One of the two sons born of the second marriage was John Wesley Odell, a Methodist minister preaching in Ohio and Michigan. Nathan Garrot's will of 1776, willed to small grandsons 10pounds each. He stated that these were the children of his son-in-law, Rev. Thomas Odell. (Nathan Garrott Odell would have been about 4 years old at this time). The sons were: Nathan Garrott Odell and Nathan Odell Garrott. Family history says that he was a member of a Loyalist family, but I have no solid proof. Around 1881 he moved to the Argyle area of New Brunswick with his wife Mary (maiden name unknown) and his youngest son Edgar H. | My notice: : | I am looking for any information about Joseph Odell born approx 1847 in Bedford. He served with the Army in Ireland in 1877 when he had his first child with Rebecca Grouitte (she was born in Plymouth).
His name was Joseph Henry.The other children were Violet, Annie, Charles, George, Alfred, Elen, Alice, William and John. Joseph Odell served in Jersey from about 1888 and retired from the Army there. He died in 1917. I am looking for any information anyone may have especially about Charles who is reported to have died in Ceylon in about 1922. |

John Odell was an army major and obtained estates in county Limerick in 1667 (after the Restoration of Charles II). He became High Sheriff, and MP for Askeaton.. The Odells were part of the Protestant
Ascendancy, who ruled Ireland from the seventeenth through to the nineteenth century. Thomas Alexander Odell (1803-1870), the son of John Westropp-Odell, came to England and lived in Liverpool and then in London.
