Comments:Forgot to leave a comment when I signed-in. No surprises there! I attended that illustrious granite fortress 1954-61, the best days ever in Form 3b (Hut D). I 'defected' from the UK several times to Poland in the late 60s & early 70s & finally got banned from the country in 1979 -('activities incompatible with my offcial staus' as the put it diplomatically). Invited back in 1990 (all is forgiven, that was then, this now, etc.) & decided to stay here permanently in 1993. Those who knew from those far off days will not be surprised to know that I ended up working for the Polish Commission for the Investigation of Nazi War Crimes - exhuming mass graves & the like at death camps and execution sites. Not the slightsest intention of retiring although I've just applied for my OAP which has go through the POlish ministry first, thence to UK. I might get a few quid before I end up dead. Do they do pasties by air mail?

Some familiar names from '72 to '79. I went and did a degree in Computing at Imperial, joined a consultancy firm, got married, one son, made redundant, worked for another computer firm, another son, joined an IT department, separated, got outsourced to a consultancy firm, got divorced. (Ever think life goes round in circles?).

I remember Mr Neville (Physics); Ms Gartside (Chem?); Mrs Lugg (Maths); and can picture the faces of my English, RK (both of them) & Geography teachers, but then I always was crap at remembering names and dates and haven't got any better.

Still writing poetry and may eventually publish some one day.

Do you remember the Lane that divided the schools & the 6th form block where we were able to make coffee & (some of us) learned how to play chess?

I started at the Grammar School in September 1974 in form 7G and went on to the Penwith Sixth Form College in 1980. Three of us in this form had the same birth day - July 3rd.

However, I've lost contact with my friend Jeremy Tilley who was in another form but also started at the same time as me. If anyone has information about Jeremy please could they contact me.

I ended up going to Lancaster University (1981-84) and read history. I did my teacher training at the West Sussex Institute and have been a history teacher since 1985. Be interested to hear what happened to anyone else in my form.

I was supposed to be at home that night but lied to crumblies through my teeth...like yer did...and in the end I recall Chris's dad picked us up...

That night is as clear as day (i think...again!) but what on earth was it all about.

So if you guys see this....exorcise this ghost and tell me what that was all about!

Anyway, I love this site!....and I don't need drugs to get there (just kiddin!)..(I mean just kiddin I don't need drugs!)...(that sounds worse now....)....oh you know what I mean!

Comments:Greetings from Worcester Park. 1966-1972 Trelawney. School No.4301. On the first day Crask-Rising (spel?) wafted into the room to take our details. We had peviously been warned by Noddy to stand when he arrived. Being arranged alphabetically, I was first up. Name, Address, Date of birth etc. When he asked Religion? I replied "Christian". He sighed and gave me a pitying look. "What church do you go to?" he said with forced patience "St Mary's" I repled. He fixed me with those granite features and intoned "Church of England then". Total humiliation in front of thirty strangers first thing in the morning. What a school! what teachers! The last day. Noddy had asked me what I wanted to do for a career. I told him I liked art and science. He paused, then dived into a back room and came out in a cloud of dust with a small leaflet from Cambourne Tech about a Diploma in technical illustration . I had an interview, was accepted, went back to A level bio at the Girls School and handed back my disection kit. The teacher was always complaining that I put too much shading on drawings."You won't have time for that in the exams" Funny thing is that's exactly what I ended up doing for a living. I started the follwing Monday, six weeks into the term.

What happened in between these two pivitol monments of my life is something I'm still coming to terms with. Thank you Mr McCarthy for showing me how to hold a pencil properly. Thank you Zack for sorting my adolescent head out. Thank you Mr Harvey for explaining that nobody gets 100% in a biology exam, and all the rest for making me the person I am today.

Good idea for a site - Don't know many of you as you're from a different vintage but remember the Quixleys and of course Bob who used to drink with my dad in the Sportsmans and relay how many detentions and canings I received each week (I would have had more but you only got one debit mark for losing your journal which was a good swap when you had 9 already). Reading through the entries brought back memories of Pirates in the gym, the 3 a side football contests and chips from Treneere whilst doing the cross-country run. Be good to hear from anyone from a similar year and if any of the teachers read this - thank you all for beating a bit of sense into me and to the girls from PGGS we used to meet behind the canteen wall.

I just visited Pz for the first time in 25 years, got back a week ago (Sept 2002). Incredibly great time...thought of you all. Do you remeber we all sat alphabetically all those years and had to shout out our names for roll call. I can still remember parts of it...Kneebone, Lambe, Lester, Maule, Page, Pender, Russell, Sinclair, Sominka...remember Zbezack (phonetic sp)Sominka? David Kneebone & I were always in trouble for "chattering". I was allowed to bring my mini traveller (blue) to school & park it by the canteen (a huge deal)...and up to 10 of us would go to lunch most days to the fish & chip shop @ the top of Causeway Head, near the pig market!

Do you remember we could be stopped at any time & made to recite the school song? Uhh...
"King Arthur ruled in Lyonesse...

Happy Memories, All the Best, Tony.

I began in 1976/7 ? and left in 1980ish. I was in 1 Cooper and I think, 4 Wallis up in the attics!! Sarah Taylor, Bernice De Lord, Liz Evans, Jenny Reynolds, Mandy Fowles, Deborah Angove, Tina (Cook?) Helen Roberts, Sarah Peters, these are some of the names I remember from my class. Teacher's names that spring to mind are Mrs Gartside (Chemistry) Mrs Woollard (English Language) Mrs Chot. (Biology) and .....Mrs Byrne.
I'm now, after six years in London as a boring civil servant, living on Exmoor with my two beautiful children and an assortment of animals, making my mark on the fashion world as a milliner!

Comments:Funny how it comes back to you after a visit to this site. I was in 1D in 1977 - I like the class list section, I'd forgotten quite a few names but the class register is a reminder.

Anyone remember Wilkinson (Handbag) the music teacher, Mr Rowe the Classical Studies teacher who was shut in a cupboard (what happened to Simon), Steve Ashall the Geography teacher and, of course, Blackler the Maths teacher?? Also, what happened to Alan Thomas, the 1D form teacher in '77?

I'm now based in Plymouth after five years in London, and married with a five year old son.

Would like to hear from anyone else who was at HDGS between 1977 & 82, especially if anyone's planning a reunion.

Comments:Since 1977 (wow) I've been pretty busy. I went to St.Ives Comprehensive, (at last girls!) Cambourne Tech (dropped out), worked on Porthmeor Beach for a season so I could but a good camera, and went round Europe on Interail, twice. I ended up living in France for a while, then met a girl nice enough for me to move to Wolverhampton (her home) where I trained for 2 yrs as a land Surveyor. Worked in London for 6 mnths then got selected for Operation Raleigh, went to Chile (very adventurous) and made some Ozy and Kiwi connections. Applied for a job in Egypt, (1990) and worked as a surveyor looking for oil all over North Africa. My mum died (1992) and then I went to Oz for a year where I got a good job surveying in Sydney. I enrolled from there to get into the 2nd year of a mapping degree in Glasgow, flew back (Via South Africa where I met my biological father for the first time) and three years later graduated with hons in Topographic Science. I took a post immediately in Kuwait and spent the next 2.5 years in the Gulf, and back to Egypt. I left there and worked in Central America and the States for Exxon. (1998) I decided then to emigrate to New Zealand, where I have been ever since. I've just finished moving a wooden cottage 200Km and onto my piece of land and I'm in the process of completing it. It's amazing and weighs 28 tonnes and cost about 1000 pounds. I've spent 20000 making it habitable, though.

What happened to my pal Robert Ross. We used to manufacture and ignite hydrogen using zinc electrodes immersed in water and plugged into the mains at his house. What fun! What ever happened to Luke Piantino? I got the cane for making a precisely engineered pee-shooter, and for kicking the ceiling of the changing rooms down - remember?

Human Biology was a highlight for me. Frankie Hull offering to bring in his wife for a demo if there was anything we didn't quite understand, and Butch Matthews recommending a hot bath before intercourse.
The tuck-shop in the pavilion also comes to mind; the cold-drinks machine (lime or blackcurrant?); and a monumental scrap between Bayo and Ozzie over at the rec.
I became mentally scarred, however when Russel Jory called me a 'turnip' in choir-practise .
Recovery is slow, but a decade of coastal life in sunny California has helped ease the pain.

I was at HDGS from 1974 until comprehensive education finally caught up with Penzance in 1980 and then I got shifted to Penwith 6th Form College (as it was then).

Was quite good at music ( nice one "Juke Box" !! ) but bloody crap at sport ( though I still follow "The Pirates" from a distance). Am currently wreaking untold havoc upon the education system in the North of England as Head of Years 12 and 13 and Business Studies/IT teacher at Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College in Bradford. Those of you who "slag off" Cornish education should try teaching up here!!

Does anyone know what happened to Keith Bennett, who I remember with respect and affection as both a Form Teacher and the guy who got me throught "O"level Latin??

PS. I was there when Chris Cooper got the box stuck on his head!!! Priceless!!!

Anybody heard of any of the following recently?

Jonathan Lever
Mark Prowse
Tim Rowe

Andrew Wallace
Adrian "Tucker" Thomas

How times change, those of you that may remember me will probably not believe where I have been for the last nearly 18 years. Well have served as a Medical Technician in the Army and have travelled around the world.

Am married to Manuela (a b***** German !!), whom I met over in Germany during the 15 years I spent over there. We have been married for nearly 12 years and currently have two girls, Joanna 9 and Emily 3. Sadly we lost a son Kevin who died in 1996 aged 5.

I am still very keen on sport and have participated in biathlon at the National Championships, cricket of course plus X Country and Football etc.

I only wish I had come across the WEBSITE before, what an interesting adventure, well done. I only hope I can get the opportunity to come home for a reunion whenever the next one may be planned. Just to talk about the fun we used to have.!!!! Hope I don't get put back in to DETENTION AGAIN !!

Well if anyone does remember me please feel free and email me or even give me a call (01264 782143). We are currently living in Middle Wallop (sound like a cave out St Just !!!), near Salisbury. I do come home every year and would love to meet up with some of the other "rogues".

All the best and hope to hear from some of you dreckly !!!

Comments:Hi all, havnt visited the site for awhile, amazed to see how busy it is! My original entry is way down the list (third from bottom) Rather sadly though, I still have had no contact from any of my old chums :-( I was only there for a couple of years tho, leaving in 75, I was in 4H at the time (alpha I think must have been the house). Although I attended nine different schools during my childhood, the only one I look back on fondly was HDGS, its just that my memory lets me down on why! Love to be able to put names to faces and vice versa. Live in a tent in or around StIves for three weeks evey summer, barbies and beer every night with wife, 2 kids and anyone else whose welcome. Why not give me a call?

All the best Clive

Anyway, cut to the chase, be nice to hear from some of you who remember me (God! i hope no-one holds a grudge this long!) Cool site....still pooky tho..Paul Williams

Comments:Hi,
I began Penzance Grammar School in 1958 and left in 1965.
I then went to college at Bath and spent a lifetime in teaching - finally ending up as a headteacher at St. Mary's C. of E. School in Penzance.
Four years ago I took early retirement and have never looked back!
I live in Carbis Bay and can't wait for the summer to come round again.
Good wishes to all readers and old boys.

Comments:I am one of the 1972 intake year, came up with Martin Hocking and Leslie Davis from Mardron. Ther are some people I see on the site that I remember - Bruce Scobie for one and Mark Chadwick for another. I went onto Cardiff Uni after school- mostly because I couldn't see what I would do in Penzance. Ended up with a drinkers degree and after couple of years doing odds and sods (and being umemployed), went into the Oil Business where I still am. I've been all over the place, but home at the moment is near Beaconsfield in Bucks. Married a Cornish girl, Lucinda Brown from Carbis Bay and have two young children. I'll not be able to make it for the reunion unfortunately, the wheels of business demand my presence in Algeria. Great site - hopefully you'll be able to expand into the other years eventually - though I know it must be a huge task. Good Luck. Anyone wanting to contact me can

Comments:Sitting out here in Algeria reading all the memories of ex-HDGS is quite something. I have already sent the http address to as many people as I know who are spread all over the world. Being Bob Quixley's eldest did not make things especially easy, but overall good memories. We live in Buckinghamshire now, but still scan the Cornishman and West Briton just in case there is something that catches our eye to move back "home". It is fabulous to see how far people have spread themselves from the small beginnings of a Grammar school perched on the end of the county. My year into the school was 1972, along with Martin Hocking and Leslie Davis - we all came into the school from Madron (There was also Rosalind Norton and Emma Hart who went into the GGS). The only one I have seen since leaving school was Rosalind in the middle of the night in the middle of N. France. Hopefully the site will expand so others can see what became of their years as well as 1977. Great job though - well impressed

Comments:Living in Scotland and working for the National Archives of Scotland as IT manager and project manager for the Scottish Archive Network.... 2 jobs for the price of one :-)

I met Christine while at Uni in Kent. Once I'd graduated it was a case of toss a coin whether to move back to Cornwall or to Scotland where Christine is from ... I lost :-(

We have 2 children, Arianne & James. I am Hearts daft ... probably the only Cornish Hearts season ticket holder and still play cricket for our local side (and yes they do play cricket in Scotland)

I think I only recognise Mark Chadwick from the same class but years of register time means I can still reel off the whole class (1S) Ball, Billing, Bolitho, Chadwick, Durrant, Evans, Jeckyll, Jones, Lambourn, Marden, McDermott, Mildren, Nicholas, Reynolds, Richards, Roberts, Rowe, Sandys, Scobie, Semmens, Stone, Tonkin, Wallis, Woolf, Weekes, Wynter ... apologies for any spelling typos ... any omissions?

Comments:Great idea for a site. We had some friends round for dinner last night and they were talking about it so I decided to give it a try. The site conjured up a myriad of memories ranging from the good (Pirates in the gym) to the bizarre (I vaguely remember being smitten with Vaughan Andrewatha's sister - I think she was called Tanya; although let's be honest at that age I fancied almost anyone in a skirt). I am currently an Army Officer living in Bristol, married with 3 children. The idea of a reunion sounds great. I am disappointed that Richard Conybeare didn't become a teacher and keep the family tradition going.

I am contemplating legal action against my mother for letting me out with that haircut and those collars.
