Hello. I have been enrolled in a private school for my High School and Middle School years. I will be heading into 11th grade this year, but my friend has piqued my interest in homeschooling.
I'm wondering: would it be a good idea to attempt homeschooling at this point? I'll be honest-the reason why I am interested is because I am tired of the system. It doesn't feel healthy-it's impossible to ever be fully rested. I'm tired of being forced to learn pointless things (Just so you know, I am at the top of my class. I feel like my time could be better spent if I was homeschooled. I could get a job, pursue art classes, work out, etc. Please contact me at my e-mail address to further discuss this. Thank you.

Hey, I am currently 15 and about to start 10th grade. I have gone to private school my entire life, but have always felt something didn't fit. At my old school I was called "perfect" beacuse of my grades, but at my new schoold i am "popular" but feel i can't show how smart I can be. I find myself sitting bored in classes at either school and not working at the fast pace I know I am capable of. I really am considering homeschooling, but don't know how to approach my parents ... any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Hey I go to the public high school and was thinking about simply homeschooling. Most of my best friends are homeschooled. i don't have a problem in school but i just want a change from the cussing and corruption. Do any of you guys think that's a bad idea? Also, what would my mom have to do--i don't think she's ready to teach me.

I decide I wanted to be home schooled last year after my high school screwed me over last year. I was really sick and pulled out of school by my doctor. And the school never sent me a tutor and I did the work that the teachers sent home but it did not count because I did not have a tutor. So I found this home school program Laurel Springs School and all my school works done on the computer. My only problem is that I can’t find any High School age home-school groups in my area of New Jersey and I was wondering if anyone knew of any groups.

Hi Leah,
You want to take online courses? A few options come to me. The college I went to (a community college) offered online courses, and they had people across the country (or even world) taking classes through them. That was Foothill College, in California. (being a community college, they will have pre college level courses, starting at pre algebra, basic reading comprehension, etc). I am sure there are MANY other college that offer online courses. Community college are generally cheaper, and as such perhaps a better avenue. Remember... if you take a college course it will likely be on your PERMANENT record. Keep that in mind. Another option is online schools for homeschoolers. If i can find a link for a few, i'll post here or e-mail you soon. There are also online courses for different subject material. That is online places that teach information. But this is usually skills, not course material. There are also various places that have suggestions on curriculum to use, but I don't think that was what you were asking for. Hope this helps. Sonya

Hi Gabrielle,
I think you need to respect that your family needs your help on the farm, yet you still need to stay up with your education. Don't get me wrong, i do think you understand and are considering both of these well. I think it comes down to which method of education will take less time (to complete about the SAME amount of education) upon your part, doing it at home, or going to the public schools. Also, are you pretty much independent on your home-education (ie, does it take your parents time also). For me, the answer would be home education saves a lot of time. however, you know your styles, and should decide this. If going to the public schools does save time, it is probably better to return. Nonetheless, i do not know what motivated you to start home education in the first place, so you have to consider what you lose by going to public schools. However, what i understand from your original post, is that home education is probably more effecient and preferable (sp?), if only your parents would actually allow you to study. Is this the case? If so, first I would decide approximately how much time you need to keep up with school per day (or week, or however you schedule yourself). Then, have a talk with your parents. Tell them, you are strongly considering going back to the public school, but you recognize this will take away from your duties on the farm. Thus, ask for a certain allocated time each day/week just for studying. I would STRONGLY suggest you go somewhere else, isolated from others, so you can focus yourself. It's also not critical, in home schooling to stay exactly on schedule with what it learned in school. Honestly, we did stuff extremely different then the school curriculum. But, this is wholly dependent on your methods and goals from homeschooling. It's also not the end of the world if you take until age 19 to finish high school. I am not saying you should take this long, for I do not know your situation. You have to decide how much your family needs you versus how you do with your education. I hope this is somehow helpful. Feel free to ask if you have any other concerns. Good luck, Sonya

To other homeschoolers; I need some advice on my education. If I were in public school I'd be going into 10th grade. Unfortunately, I'm not that far here at home. Due to my family's current situation I am working alot of the day, and I also help run a farm/ranch. Should I go back to public school? To "catch up"?I think my parents are refusing to admit I'm behind. If anyone has an idea on how I could change my situation, please let me know. Gabrielle.

Hello Mimi,
A good way to get in contact with other homeschooling families in through an online egroup; http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hshs/ Has good information for homeschooling at the high school level. Here is some information on places that offer diplomas: http://www.homeschoolteenscollege.net/diplomaisp.htm Keep in mind even if you get a diploma for your son, in college applications the SAT, GED, and/or ACT will particularly important for him compared to applicants. Hope this helps. Sonya

Your Question or Message: |
Hi Calliope's,
You do not need to pursue all topics in home education if you're particularly not interested in them (I got that impression from your previous post, I may be misinterpreting). If you feel you should do something related to health/safety topics, a good way to start may be to think about what areas interest you still related to health DO raise your curiousity(Human development/puberty? What are the roles of safety officials in our society? Maybe you enjoy writing your opinions about this more then actual studying, and can incorporate that into your studies). What I consider the benefits of homeschooling, is that you do not need to follow exactly what is traditionally done in the high school classes. (Especially for a less essential class like health/safety). This may be a good starting point for information on textbooks or resources: http://www.quailhaven.com/academy/hslinks.htm Going to the library and looking around is always a good idea. Talking with many homeschooling family's about what they use is also good way to get started, but finally it will be good to tailor homeschooling to your style. Hope this is helpful Sonya D.
