//Carl Been a while since I checked in here, what's new in the world of SFN? I hear a new cd may be steaming our way. Is it true? Would be wonderful to see you guys recording more stuff. Apologies for not coming to give support at the most recent gigs, 'tis very hard to travel up country, but I'm always there in spirit. Be sure to know my weary copy of 'Remember to Smile' is still playing in my ear..!...as I stumble around ol' London town. Anyway, thanks for your music, it remains a constant inspiration. |

//Carl Hello! Chris and I were talking about the relevance of ''The Fish Tank'' gig, which we're very much looking forward to, and wondered if any more songs would undergo title changes to fit in with the place; as there's already 'Fishing for Compliments' and 'Fish Song'! Wondered about...; 'More Worms'...for the fish...'Finbreaker', 'Go Fucking Fishing', 'Joe's Tackle' (or 'Hobin's Hook'), 'Hats Off to Herman Melville', 'Far From Finland', 'Missed you by a Lake(Joggin')'Foul Pike', etc. etc.! Ha, far too much time on our hands, I think! Anyway, lookin' forward to the 29th, I'm travelling up for it so hopefully I make it! See you's there! |

//Charles Be sure to check out the new reissued musical set by The Fall, compiled by the late, great John Peel. Also, Rollins has rereleased 'Get In The Van' with forty-odd extra pages, an increasingly concise and hard hitting read! Despite these rebirths, and my discovery of a good band named Einsturzende Neubauten, SFN still dominate the airwaves. Have a Merry Christmas. Hope to see you guys perform in the new year! |

Keep rockin', and cheers for that Love/Hate recomendation, certainly worth a buy...or download. To return the favour, I recommend the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds double album...like forty novels across two discs...quality. |

//Carl SORRY FOR NOTHING Five star rating; ***** A three-piece musical force of unremitting musical honesty and insight, Sorry For Nothing appear the remains of rock n' roll as an art form in this manufactured age; an age which will seemingly never know the shame of poverty, the anguish of defeat, the fateful irony of the unexpected disease; the generation which, under its own blue skies and perpetual suns, needs to witness this bands compatability, rip-roaring dominance of a universal north-eastern culture, and most of all, the sheer sense of humanity with which they play. Formed in 1998, SFN seemingly blended all forms of rock diversity to spawn a rich, fresh sound of their own- each song an individual in itself. Rob Lowdon's, lightning guitar and vocals- dredged from hell's own gravel pit- seem to bear the possessive, fuelled energy of punk/metal roots with a sense of Rollins Band spontaneity and a blistering brutality reminiscent of Clutch in their prime. John Lowdown's perfectly measured drum beats are able to set scenes with precise and pummeling compositions, earth-shattering symbol crashes and heart-thudding pedal work can be imagined as having a place in the polarities of the music scene; whether that be a backdrop for an early ninetees underground rap track, or a heavy metal stadium anthem of the eighties. Stu's chunky, rib-cracking base lines provide a perfect backdrop for Lowdon's torturous thematics, the throbbing musicality bringing some of the greatest base-work to mind; the atmosphere of an early A Flock of Seagulls and fastidious Tygers of Pan Tang are awoken in the mind's eye. Even with these diverse influences in mind, the live sound the listener recieves is altogether unexpected time after time; unique and therefore unparalleled in its individuality, originality and artistic presence. For those who have been lucky enough to witness the band as a live forte, probably in some empty, smoke-filled and alcohol ravaged evening bar, will understand the edges I am only subsequently nibbling away at here; for only first-hand experience of such passion is able to carve SFN into any human beings psyche. To bear witness to it is to stand in a state of acute wonder, shock, afraid to move, afraid that the slightest note may pass through the air without biting into the ears. The outright force can bring a listener to life, there is nothing rhetorical or vague about it, as it smacks of something traditional, something unclouded by legerdemain and subterfuge. It has control over the listener, drawing them in with the pull of something scarcely remembered, elusive as integrity-a lost love, a forgotten childhood-and the recompense one gains is the reality of being alive Their music continues to progress, growing bolder, darker; charging at the irony of fate like a maddened, gored bull. Early tracks; such as 'All Mine', 'Dead Before I Die' and 'Chunk and Sloth' remain evermore striking, especially in recent performances, Lowdon realising the irony of the unchanging 'All Mine' from ten years previous, and it still manages to be a track of top twenty capabilities. Evidently, however, it is increasingly haunting at a deeper level to both listener and frontman; the life-quaking 'too good/for aplace like this' lyric raises too many questions for a normality stricken North Eastern music scene; that 'public toilet' culture evidently the ball and chain keeping this band from what should be. 'Dead Before I Die' remains one of the bands most prominent live tracks, with tongue-rasping, seizure-inducing pace, it shifts any audience to sit up and listen. The swift stylistics are matched by phenomonal percussion alterations, and equally energetic and intelligent lyricism. Lowdon explores, in less than three minutes, a rock figures' entire history; who perhaps, in their youth bore resemblance to him; their faded dreams, age-inducing self-abuse and former, as he puts it 'big fuckin' house in L.A' lifestyle. What seems the most heart rendering factor of this track is the tragic message within the retrospective slant on a wealthy professional career. The recorded E.P, the only tangible sound of the band available outside of the live context, is a remarkably professional piece of work. Set down upon disc in the latter part of 2002, its crisp, clean intensity rivals any professional output of recent years. However, as is the case with bands of musical stature, it may fail to capture their afterward live prolifics. That is, perhaps, what makes 'Remember to Smile' all the more memorable; each track is of single quality, poetic and balanced perfectly in their running order placement. These tracks draw listeners attention to perserverence against tragic odds, and help highlight the greatness of tracks written afterward, still managing to bear the integrity and brilliance to take their rightful place amongst the greats. 'Far From Fine' is an eminent opener, a power-driving riff with flesh-carving musical exposure, it would be a hit in any genre, world-wide chart; its tenor, that of time, change and the rapidity of determination, opens the listener's awareness; the 'All of you are getting in my way....' chorus resounds in defiance, and brings the three piece to the forefront of the imagination; the catchy initiation is increasingly absorbing each time it is heard and is perfect in establishing the traditional tragic heroes. The seven tracks that follow are just as remarkable, each with its own individual egotism. 'Bucket of Slops' is a modern rarity; equally unsettling melodics and rap-rocking, attention-gaining guitar fluency are complimented by a concrete-rubble realism in the drum and bass section, building an unforgettable essence of a decaying town, of rough-tough youth in the North East's grim, encroaching idyll. The lyricism is amongst the most subtle and effective, in its frightening complexity, that Lowdon has ever comitted to a song; the reminiscent; 'I remember when I used to be like you/Before my education had me standing in the dole queue' is astounding in its realisation , no-one who hears it is ever likely to forget such a revelation, such a comittment to a doomed existence. This track also opens up many of the themes the band continue to adress, both in what transpires on the E.P and in future songs; alcoholism, the impossibility of relationships and human instinct. It is an incredibly brave approach to confront such opposition with energy and angst, and where most bands would falter SFN remain strong, in such a constant struggle. The central tracks; 'The Nod' and Foul Paulo' ( an unexpected song in relation to its antithetical, comic, shit-moustache title) open the pain, rejection and loss centrefold in novelistic terms, evermore ambitious in their lyrical conceits and vivid shape. Prior to these, we get what is possibly the CD's most diverse achievement; 'Wake Up'. A ghostly verse melody accentuates the complexity of the band's talent; Lowdon's vocal is taken to a new, unexpected level. This is shattered, crushed by the furious chorus wail 'Waaaaaaaaake up' over thrashing riff-raff, screaming only two words, the evocation is devastating; there, within that scream, lies the impossibility of life, anguish and hurt. It stands alongside Cobain's four syllable 'P-a--i-n' in its reflection of a frontman's existence, yet in 'Wake Up' we are awoken to much more than mere self-indulgence. Nowhere on the record is the band's heroics more prominent than in the heart-pumping jumpiness of 'Second Best', the choric screams 'Fail-ure, Fail-ure, Wast-ed, Our fuckin' time' shatter the bones with tragesty, yet to confront such aspects, and then end the E.P upon the optimistic chugs of 'Fishing For Compliments', SFN draw awareness to the strength of the unimaginable outer-reaches of the human soul. What followed the E.P was a continuing parade of its quality upon the north-eastern music scene, with many new songs being written in that time. If 'Far From Fine' was the bands' mainstream parapet no.1, then 'Fuck Apologies' is their anthem. Against the tide, there is no self-doubt here; the incessant repitition of 'Never wanted any part of this....' preludes a feverishly uplifting 'I'm sorry for nothing this time...' again, this is heroic in its defiance, gut-wrenching in the beauty of its melody and transcendent in its ambition. They became increasingly demanding of themselves as a live act, more solo's and complexity were attributed to transpiring tracks; pace and energy were also increasing- 'Heck' is a forcefull onslaught of stormy directness, comparable in its racy flight to Rollins' 'Whats the Matter, Man?'. Many of the bands greatest tracks emerged from a gruelling writing stint in the summer of 2003; 'Joe's Cockroaches' is a poignant, personal revelation of pressurised tuition, false friendship and legend; further reinforcement of Lowdon's songwriting brilliance when reflecting the irony of shuddering every day surroundings of idiosyncracies, here providing one of the catchiest choric pentameters ever comitted to music, and the undeniable 'Joggin'' is certainly no less. With progress, however, came the need to stand up to increasingly difficult aspirations. 'More Words' is a heart breaking piece of work; Lowdon's recognition of audience compliments is the band at their bravest (this song also possesses, perhaps, Stu's most touching base-work) and no other musician would be able to access such grief and devastation without imploding their artistry. 'Talk to me and make me tremble, make me wonder;WHY?' will bring any notions of the sense to the desperation, subject to time and change, which is at hand. The truth lies heavily in the brutality of a means to an end; 'Sorry about the words;JUST MINE'- and where some of us audience members may have glimpsed domestic violence, failed in a strive for decency and staggered in our isolation; only Lowdon is the true author of his work, therefore it is his pain, his burden. Yet, any of us with blood pumping through our veins can understand this, and why it is a realisation which can only be made with a heavy heart ; helpless and tangential in its overwhelming power, and noteably now the soundcheck track, it stands as a recognition which those of us striving for kudos and prosperity can only recognise in parts, as we are not fully aware that life is continually slipping out of reach. 'Better Off' may be the band's masterpiece and, as with 'Pardon My French', it hits all emotive targets and manages to splay the band open in full flight. No introductory riff, base or beat with this one, just straight into crushing blows of consciousness being irrevocably laid on the line. It seems the epitomy of SFN's past and present musical landscape-progressive in its riff alterations it is complimented by a feverent, inordinate tension of lyricism-displaying the last Lowdon is going to take of alcohol, its destructive capabilities in rendering the sadness of self and others; it is the final straw, the last stand; SFN now prepared to move on to better things, the riveting couplet; 'Comatose and bandaged up/That's not bad its just my luck' is the step into a new elevated sense of self and anger, identified in the latest three tracks. 'Hats off to Larry' is one of the most forward moving, clean-yourself-out, ostensible songs of recent years. The chest-splitting 'I'll never drink again' proclamation, and the sky-scraping scream over the chorus riff are symbolic; an attempt at ridding oneself of demons, hurt and life in a striking composition. The other two newly developed songs often serve as bookends in recent sets, shrouded in darkness and atmosphere. 'Bad Apple' has the capability of 'Far From Fine' anthemics, and is even more intricate; the visceral 'In your past...' verse footnotes are torturous and unique, displaying a worldly, macrocosmic scope within the band's inner circle. The other, 'Go It Alone', is perhaps Lowdon coming through everything;scarred but stronger than ever. It is an admirable recollection, riveting in its raucous anger. With basey, smokefilled feedback atmospherics and fire it is possibly their most exposingly darkened, almost hellish, song. Yet the slicing lyrical arrow; 'I'm amazed that I'm still standing/With all the shit that I've been through and in...', reminds the listener that this is SFN, as strong and impending as ever, now ready to confront anything; even a support slot for the UK Subs on July 30th at the Newcastle Archer; which must bring back memories of Misfits and Hundred Reasons past support. Sorry For Nothing are as important to music as music has been to them, and all of us who possess any strand of dignity should hope that, for the sake of the music industry, they do not remain trapped in this cultural stationary train; as they are a universal force. They are pivotal to our culture anyway; there but for the grace-and occasionally the hand-of God go we. |

//John S*F*N //http://www.sorryfornothing.com Hey everybody, bit of confusion about gigs eh? We are playing at Blyth tonight and not the Archer. Don't know where the Archer one came from but the Blyth gig has been booked for months so we are doing that one. Next one for the Archer is 30 July with UK Subs. |
