Comments:Have just stumbled across your website by chance. Although I'm not a skater my brother Graham McEachran (mac) was. He was one of the founders of deathbox skateboards, and did all the designs for the decks, wheels and t-shirts (tea pot, dodos, mr punch, hitler etc), as well as being a pretty damn good skater as well!!!

He's no longer part of the scene, although he's recently designed some decks for flip -you'll see which are his (the good ones -not the computer designed crap).

He's also very recently began taking his board for a spin - so if any old timers who remember him and are still skating in London -please reply to this email, and I'll pass on any messages to him.

I tried your email address and it bounced back, so I thought this may work.

My wife, myself and our son Oscar are visiting the UK, Ireland and the US in the next couple of months.

Where are you in Ireland?

We fly into Belfast and will be staying in Innesgillen at Tracey’s grannies house.

Is there much to skate, I’d love a roll with yourself and some of the old boys.

Anyhow, get back in touch and we can head out for a roll and catch up.

Cheers,

Tony

Comments:Hi. Just had a look at the site. Loving the old park photos. Thought I'd leave a message because I might have some useful stuff for you. Along with my brother Luke and our mate Nick Ross, I guess I was one of the last knebworth " locals ", having grown up in the village, we skated there religiously in the late 80s commuting in from nearby Breachwood Green, the village we had moved to. I make the bold claim of last local not just because we would skate there 2 or 3 times a week or more, but also because we almost always had the place to ourselves, lucky us I guess. These sessions were naturally recorded on whatever janky camera I had and I still have albums full of pics from Kneb, Stevenage and a host of other spots from our subsequent years of fairly nomadic skating. If I can sort out getting some pics into a digitl format, I'll pick out some good ones and send them to you.
Speaking of Stevenage, we skated there alot too and coincidently, my grandad, Bill Churchill, worked there in the early 80's and I have an early memory of him showing me some skaters riding indoor wooden ramps in the youth club, does anyone remember these or have any info about them?
Well, thanks for reading, I'll try and sort those photos out and pass them on. drop me a line, cheers, Mark

There was a skate shop there too, with a young lady called Sheena I think,Or as we called her, In a scouse accsent,"going in the van with Shogo" After we all went to colne to see him skate, with Shawn rouse? does any body remember any of us, I snaped my wrist in the half pipe in gillingham,Easter 79,"compound too",didnot stop me skateing, got wrist guards from John at Surry skate boards.Ripped the Lion's pool to shreds, bought some Lazer trucks, and ground the name of them in a weekend in the pool Gillingham.Got to say the best park I ever skated.Does any body remember ROLLINGTHUNDER,It was a ruff old spot in London with a masive half pipe that seemed to go on for miles.I would like to meet up with some old skaters, does any body organise any thing like that.Fantastic site as the saying goes "Ill be back" JimmyJ

I was looking at pictures of Paul Rocker Robson and the rest of the deathbox crew online. I used to help work and build the ramps at the Barrow In Furness infamous Skate Shack. I was there when it started as a humble little shop all the way up to when it was the full park. Even at the end when the Blanche family backed out and the skaters tried to run it. I miss skating with Milly, Taggy, Russ and all the guys. There was sooo many people, if anyone knows anyone's email addresses please send them my way...that would rock!

Well marraige saw an end to that with a move to Ardloui Scotland then later to Perth where i lost touch, still searching as pavlo is not great with calling old friends or writing.Anyone in touch with him let me know although i do have an address it is from Aussie white pages, after this long time it would be odd to call

Comments:Hello all,

I have attached an old magazine picture of the Malibu Dogbowl in Nottingham from an article in Skateboarder, I hope Stevie can place in his gallery. It was not a very complementary article , a very challenging park to skate but very rewarding once mastered.

I was a member of the team back then and still skate most weeks with one of my old team mates Kenny Prest and more latterly with another fine old Malibu skater, OZ. Unfortunately OZ broke his ankle this summer on a local half pipe but I know he's going to make a RAD comeback as soon as he's out of Physio.

I remember some of the names on the list below , Ally Barr from our competitions with Skateside, Dave Tring Malibu Skater and Rob Jones, Nottingham's own answer to the Z Boys as pioneer of fluent surf style skating at the early nottingham skate spot Hyson Green. I met Rob again a couple of years ago and still email occasionally although I don't think he's temted to get on the skateboard again yet.

Keep skating, I need the moral support.

Comments:Hi dudes.
I'm a Bradford (Yorkshire) lad. Don't know where to start but I have a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG History.
Started in the mid-70's at Peel Park, Halifax Skate Park and The Wheel Thing in Shipley. Dabbled with Wakefield a little. Graduated to Roxy Skate, Mexborough/Swinton (saw Shogo Cubo) and Colne, Lancashire (with the London dudes, Mad Max Baker, etc). Knew Steve Gratton and Andy Lomas.
Packed it in for a couple of years, then restarted when a half-pipe appeared at Manningham Sports Centre, Bradford (Bradpipe). Won the ESA 'junior skater of the year' award in 1982. Did Livingstone, Kidderminster and Horncastle. Hung around with Lee Bryan at his place in Cherry Willingham, Lincoln and his mate Pete Trevor. Good pals with Bryan Shaw, Ian Pemberton, Paul Tobin. All the dudes from the time. Skated with Neil Danz, Pete Shelley, Danny Webster, Sean Goff, Steve Reid, etc. Too many names to mention. Best years of my life. Where did it all go wrong?
What I'd give for a slice of the action again. What I'd give for any photo's of the parks I've mentioned above. What I'd give for some early footage of myself, vain twat that I am.
Seriously. I'd love to meet up with any of the Bradpipe or Cherry Willingham dudes again.

Comments:Just seen the site for the first time, was blown away by all the old reminiscences,I used to rollerskate at Farnborough skatepark between 77 and abuot 83.From the first half pipe and ramps built by the club, largely due to Chris Seaton and his dad,the Evans bros,Doug Cameron ,rOBBIE Charman and the rest. They all planted the seeds of hard gnarly riding {remember the dog town vert}that kept an interest in ramp and vert riding when every where else was being shut down. When we managed to get hold of Wokingham steel frame pipe and afew months later managed to get hold of Andovers identical steel box section shortly after, joining the two pipes together, replying and atatching a pool coping we thuoght that we had probably the best half pipe in the country at the time.It relly livened things up,people from all over the place got to no about Farnborough and some top geezers started calling it home, the club became more organised largeley due to the effrts of Shane Rouse,British freestyle champ for a while, the Abrooks,Gary Lee,DanZ,Danny Webster,Shaun Goff,Andy big bird Peerless, not to mention Robbie Charman,Stroppy,Ben Norris,Witty Mason,Mark Evans,Steve Bell,Neil Cocking and shit loads of others that came and went.Tis site did for me what the recent dog town movie did for me,it made me realise just how good it was to be part of the excitement that world was generating at the time.I'm getting my kicks from mountainboarding now,I live with my wife Sal and two boys {bmx'ers and budding mtn/brders}in north Yorkshire,Hallo to anybody that remembers me,take care y'all Mick Beausang

I bought a Santa Cruz deck about ten years back, then smashed my wrist to bits on a bank at Hull's tidal barrier! Does anyone remember Pure Fun skatepark in Scarborough? I spent a full week camping out there and skated all day, every day. God, I miss those fantastic times. I've now got a 12 year old son, who I sometimes go skating with in an empty car park on Sundays. The Dogtown vid brought back memories of all my heroes. My mate, who writes music as one half of Fila Brazillia, recorded a tune for Stacey Peralta, one of my faves of the 70's. Wow.

Comments:Some of you may remember me. I skated in Bristol and London in the late 70's. My claim to fame was a feature interview in Skateboard! magazine.

I used to skate everywhere. Totally obsessed. I spent all my time thinking/eating/dreaming skateboarding. I used to look at the countryside, buildings, and even trees, and imagine them covered with concrete. I used to see myself doing slides and all the other stuff on those imaginary slopes.

The South Bank was the best!

I have been living in Italy for about 20 years now. I’m 41 and haven’t skated for about 8 years. The last time I tried, I borrowed some kid’s board in the street. After a few attempts I managed a kickflip and a couple of 360’s and that was about it. I got out of breath quickly, and was worried about my old bones. However, I am quite fit (I ran my first half-marathon this year), and try to go skiing when I can. My three kids are at an age when I can take them skiing, so I might start skiing some more.

They have just built a new skateboard park where I go running. I sometimes think I should stop and have a go, though I reckon I would probably break something first time. Are any of you still skating?

A very warm hello to all of you that know me! It was great to see your names. I remember all these names (copied from someone else’s mail) Kadir Guirey, Simon Napper, Jeremy Henderson, Adam Peacock, John Sobloski, Mark Baker, Marc Sinclair, Tim Levis, Jules Gayton, The Cutts Bros, The Turnbulls Bros... I also remember these names: Max Kirsten, Simon Mail, Tim Walker, Jim Slater, Mark Slough. And there are others. It would be great to know what you’re all up to. And if you’re ever in Italy I’ll take you out for a pizza.

Bloody hell!

Comments:Thanks for the site, it jogged a lot of happy memories. I skated around West Yorkshire in the mid to late 1970s. To see pix of Colne was truly fab, it was the best park ever. Years ago I went back to look for it and found that the beautiful bowl had been filled in and the building was in use as a builder’s merchants I think.

My earliest memories are of the Pig and Whistle in Leeds, where there was a big scene based around a bit of 1970s street architecture. There was also a nearby ski shop that sold skateboard gear. I spent a lot of time at the Wheel Thing in Shipley. It was not up to much, but it was on a good train line for me. Later there was a good park in Halifax and there was a very odd one in what might have been an old swimming pool in Leeds.

Further a field, I remember a great park in Scarborough, although it was wet several of the times I visited. And also one in Hove, the name of which I can’t remember. I have no photos of my own, but somewhere there is a big stack of magazines. If I can find them, you are welcome to them.

What about a section for Skatings dark years - the eighties ? South Bank was dark and windy in those Thatcher years, we had to hide out in the Royal Festival hall Gamelan room when it got too cold. LSD were the ones to take Hip Hop to the Californians as such pioneers as Spry, Floyd, Dobie and shaky Faky Mad Mike showed the rockers that the brothers could flex. The ethos of LSD really gelled with the Gonz, Guerrero and the then burgeoning street crew who have since revolutionised the whole of Skating and as a result THE BLEEDIN WORLD of youth culture. Times were hard and many sort the financial renumeration of the booming Music industry, taking the street global. Skating and Hip Hop was a natural alliance as we can now see.
Lest we Forget.......LSD always. Skate tough or go home.

I was compeeting in the comp at Billy Smarts Circus Windsor, I think it was 77 and little deaf John was there as well ripping in all areas.
I had been perfecting the miller flip (at least a year befor Miller got in the US mags with it)and had been trying it on the huge whiplash, I think they called it.
I think I had only made probably four or five in three months.
Any way little deaf John saw what I was trying, smiled at me made some kind of noise to let me know he was going to try it as well.
Guess what, the little sod made it first attempt.

Comments:Hi Robin,

Intresting memories you got there from Malibu.
John Turner (the deaf kid) carried on skating into the early 80s, he did begin to build a name for himself in London but it was already after the magazines had died down. "little John" had more talent than most of the skaters I ever met, he also had a winning way with the local malibu girls in the "team" room. I heard that later on he turned his talents to BMX and became pretty good at that. Kenny still lives in Nottingham and does skate when he gets a chance (or so tony simthson my brther in law tells me). Seb and Suasuge I have not seen since the 70s, you can find a post from Rob lower in the guest book and recently we have talked with a few of the malibu guys about a reuinion, it could be fun!
There is an article on my website about the malibu dog bowl and my exsperiances of skating in nottingham back in the day.....

David Tring
founding member of the Nottingham skateboard club 76
founding member of Malibu dog bowl 77
fomrer team captin Malibu dog bowl
founding member of F.I.S.T (freestyle in street terrian) 1988

hehehe I sound like a war vet....

Comments:Cool site - just revisited it after watching DVD of Dogtown & Z-Boys. I used to live in Derby & skate at Malibu Dogbowl in Nottingham most weekends in 78/79. Biggest memory from those times is when the Benjyboard team visited in 78 - John Sablosky, Jeremy Henderson and Marc Sinclair. Of the three, Marc Sinclair was the least well known at the time, but turned out to be the most impressive. However, even he was overshadowed by one of the local skaters - a 11 yr old deaf mute kid called John (can't remember his surname - might have been Turner or Wilson) who was the best skater I remember seeing- I always wondered why he never became more famous outside of Nottingham. I also remember John Sablosky falling off a lot in the split bowl and then standing and watching and nodding his head in respect at another local skater, Glenn Stubbins, doing non-handed backside airs (suppose they'd call that an Ollie these days) in that bowl.
The other local skater of note in those days was a lad called Kenny something. The other Malibu team skaters I remember were called Seb, Trotter (Trotski) and Sausage.

A few months later the Benjyboard team were supposed to visit Malibu again, but didn't turn up.

Comments:I too lived in London during the 70's. I used to skate Shouth Bank, Skate City, Dunstable, Stevenage, and anything at the time that looked like a ramp. I know live in California and have not skated for, "Let's say!" 20 years, I started skating again about 7 months ago, and am just starting to get the hang of it again. I'm now 41, but I still have not lost me touch. I have some old Skateboarder magazines from the 70's that covered the skate scene at that time. E-me and I'll scan & share some old photos with you, in exchange for a T-shirt. Great web site thouroughly enjoyed it.

Comments:32 years old now. Drove my parents mad in 1976 to get my first wooden board, with rubber brake on the back. Progressed to G and S Fibreflex, ACS trucks and 70mm red kryptonics, which I still have. I have just bought Dogtown DVD and can't wait to see it. I hate all these "ollie-obssessed" teenagers. Cruising is where it is at. Feeling the road or concrete underneath you. Taking control of that board and feeling the wind in your hair. Also, all of these skate programs on cable have this hideous US heavy rock soundtrack going on. Personally, as a UK boy, I prefer to skate to some intelligent electronica, such as Air or Kraftwerk. I'm a South London boy, so any others out there will know Fairfield Halls in Croydon, Crystal Palace Park, Kennington Park, Stockwell, South Bank and 45 minutes on the train from East Croydon and you are in the Holy Grail of tarmac cruising. Brighton Promenade. Keep the faith, keep longboarding and just ride!

Comments:what a great site brings back some great memories,
my mum used to be the manager of arrow skatepark
in wolverhampton ,i will try to find some old photos,
my older brother (eggy) won the british open halfpipe
back in 1978,before we moved to australia.
will never forget when the american pros toured in about
1978 Dave hacket doing kick flip airs on the tracknology
bowl,it would still be considered sick today.
the park was owned by chris claton wright, who went a bit nuts and eventually closed it down, but not before a long
fight by locals to keep it open, there was also a good
out door park in wolerhampton but it was abit kinked
and anyone who skated arrow knew how spoilt we were to have
such an awesome timber indoor park.
it consisted of two foors of an old wearhouse with two half pipes a bowl an two full pipes down stairs and another
capsule halfpipe upstairs, a large bowl, a capsule bowl
the tracknology bowl, and two mini bowls.
any old skoolers out there who were skating around 1977
1979 drop us aline at major2@bigpond.com.au .

Still have board - Tracker Trucks, YO YO Wheels. Building a mini ramp for my son this summer, Im going to have a go myself. Dont think much to these new boards and set ups. My boy cant believe how fast those old set ups go. Keep skating.

Goffy Tarot Cards, Dossett Mr Punch and Rocker Street Kid always have pride of place for me.

He's really happy and a family man now, he's doing well and Bod is now running Giant. Bod's moved down from San Francisco to Santa Monica with Teresa and is still just the same as the day I first met him over 15 years ago. Both have had knee problems and no longer get to skate much, but are still fully committed to the industry and live for skating.
Douglas is Lagunas only Chelsea football thug. Still wearing the blue shirt with pride.

Comments:Hi there Stevie,

I just found your British Skateboarding Museum website and thought it was geat! You have obviously put a lot of work into it!
It was really cool to see all my old skate team buddies from Benji boards team, the Alpine sports team, and slick willies team on your list.
It was great to see Kadir Guirey, Simon Napper, Jeremy Henderson, Adam Peacock, John Sobloski, Mark Baker, Mark Sinclair, Tim Levis, Jules Gayton, The Cutts Bros, The Turnbulls Bros... etc all listed...but I noticed sadly that both Max Kirsten (myself), and my old Benji skate team buddy Simon Mail (who now lives and still surfs regularly in Cornwall) are both missing from your British Golden days skate history....

From your list, my oldest skate buddy Kadir guirey and I were both founder members of Benji's original team, which came out of the oldest and coolest surf shop in London, Jay's Surfshop on East Hill in Wandsworth (long gone), Through Jay (himself), we met Benji (Ben Howard) and John Povey from the original Pretty Things band, who incidentaly also shaped the Surfboards in Jay's shop, and was also our most loved Benji Team crazy tourbus driver.

In the winter months Jay used to show Surfing movies at the Fulham town hall once a month, and we used to dream of riding a wave like our hero's Jery Lopez, and Larry Bertleman... So, believe it or not, when Kadir and I first discovered the South Bank skate area.... all those years ago..we were stoked! Our first concrete waves...WOW! but I guess a number of people will have already claimed that one for themselves in the past! but thats how I remember it!

Also my buddies Adam Peacock, who i first met at the Southbank, (first guy i ever saw skate real Z-boyz Peralta style), and Kadir and I were the first UK skaters I believe to drain a kidney shaped pool, which Adam found at Rohampton sports private club, in Barnes, London.
We snuck in at night, drained it all with buckets and rope, and then dried it off with towels, it took forever... then at last we finally skated by torchlight...Mmmm, To us it felt historical...doing what our hero's Alva, Jay, were doing inthe states), God, Skateboarder magazine was the Bible...I remember every issue!

This was all long before the first skateparks like skate city had even opened their doors...ah those were the heady days...

What about the TV commecial I was asked to skateboard in for Blue stratos mens aftershave back in 1976, (possibly the first ever skateboarding advert for TV)... it was cool to get paid for something I loved doing... (probably would have done it for nothing if they'd asked!) yeah, getting paid to skate was cool! not just free equipment!

Do old veterans like Simon Mail and I deserve to be left off your list? well, thats up to you...
Talk to the other guys who were really there... It would be great to get us all together again?

I look forward to your response... at 43 I still own a great long board.... and that Dogtown and the Z-boys movie really took me back!

I can still remember getting rad doing a "bert on the vert" in the bowl like it was all yesterday!
So drop me an email! There are still so many great stories to tell, or they'll be sadly lost forever!

Regards,
Max Kirsten Please contact me! max@dial-m.com
