Comments:I went to Appleton Bike and Fitness to have a shower chair wheel evaluated. Besides getting good advice on the wheel's integrity, I noticed Therma Fleece Leg Warmers (Pearl Izumi, #9073, made in the USA)for sale. Bicyclists cover their legs with them when cold. They remove easily, with a zipper (smooth and easy to operate) at the bottom 6 inches that makes going over the heel a breeze.

My 'waffle' patterned long underwear was hard to don and doff. My legs get pretty cold, so I was on the lookout for an alternative.
Fringe benefit of the lycra surface material is that pants slide over them easily. For incontinence episodes, they cover legs only and are out of the way.

I agree, lots of great ideas for 2005 were discussed at the January meeting. It's quite clear that Disabled Citizens, Inc. is a multifaceted organization with lots of potential to do good things for our community and in the surrounding region.

The point that Rene made regarding peer support was the one that really hit home for me. Whether we admit it or not, we all need people. To be able to learn from, listen, and relate to others who share similar experiences is extremely valuable. That's by far the biggest benefit that I have found in being a part of this organization.

I hope to further discuss the idea of establishing a peer support network for Northeastern Wisconsin. I believe it is necessary and that it will be a worthwhile goal for us to pursue. Hopefully others will add their input on this whole concept.

Take care,

Steve

Comments:Stem cell centre to give UK world lead
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
21 June 2004

Britain is set to become the world leader in stem cell medicine with the announcement today of a new £16m research institute for developing the transplant operations of the future.

The decision to build a national centre for stem cell research follows the establishment of a national bank of stem cells to hold future "lines" of cells for use in transplant medicine.

Professor Roger Pedersen of Cambridge University, who will be director of the new institute, said that no other stem-cell institute would be able to match its scale or expertise in an area of science that could revolutionise the treatment of incurable diseases. "By pulling together the intellectual capital here in Cambridge, this would make us the largest centre focused on stem cell research anywhere in the world," he said.

In less than 10 years, stem cells have become one of the most promising developments in modern medicine with the hope that they will be used to treat chronic disorders ranging from brain disease to diabetes.

Stem cells, especially those derived from early embryos, are generalised cells that can develop into any one of the scores of specialised tissues of the body such as nerves or muscles. It is envisaged that future transplant operations using stem cells will repair damaged tissues or organs in situ rather than attempting their complete replacement using donated organs.

Professor Pedersen said: "Thousands of people live with the effects of juvenile diabetes, even though they take insulin, and existing therapies for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis also fall far short of a cure.

"The new centre will help scientists bridge the gap between fundamental stem-cell research and clinical application, speeding the delivery of treatments for diseases, many of which are currently incurable, from the lab to the clinic."

The new centre will eventually house up to 150 scientists and is being paid for by a £9.3m university grant, a £1.5m grant from the Medical Research Council, a £2.8m private endowment and smaller donations from charities such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Support for the centre has come from Professor Stephen Hawking, author of the best-selling book A Brief History of Time, who suffers from motor neurone disease and is confined to a wheelchair.

"If DNA is the software of genetics, then stem cells are its hardware. What better place to study them than in Cambridge, where the structure of DNA was discovered," Professor Hawking said in a statement.

Professor Pedersen said: "The institute has two purposes. Its mission is to bring together basic stem-cell biology with the clinical directive to deliver this to the patient. There is a great deal that we don't know about stem cells which revolves around understanding what is this capacity for specialisation that stem cells have and maintain."

One of the immediate aims of the institute is to devise a way of growing stem cells in the laboratory that would be pure enough to be classed as clinical-grade material. "A clinical-grade stem-cell line is one that can be used in patients for transplantation. It's pristine and has a history that is unblemished, without exposure to anything that could be hazardous," he said.

Many existing stem-cell lines - continuously growing cultures - have been grown using cells from laboratory mice. They would not be suitable for transplant operations because of the risk of contamination.

"You would not consider anything exposed to a mouse or any other laboratory animal as a clinical-grade line. Some people aspire to do that; I would not because I would not want to be responsible for a pandemic," said Professor Pedersen, an American who came to Cambridge because of the opposition to working on human embryonic stem cells in the US.

Comments:Self-assembling scaffold for spinal-cord repair
'Liquid' bridge could help severed nerve cells grow.
23 January 2004
HELEN R. PILCHER

It may well be the smallest scaffolding in the world, and the easiest to set up. Researchers have devised a tiny self-assembling structure that they hope will help repair damaged spinal cords.
Every year in the United States alone, about 15,000 people damage their spines. Few recover fully as it is difficult for damaged nerves to grow across the gap in a severed spinal cord.
Researchers have tried to build bridges across these gaps, so that nerves can grow. Most of these are made out of a solid material such as collagen, but require invasive surgery that can cause extra trauma to the injury.
Samuel Stupp and colleagues from Northwestern University, Chicago have now found a way to build a bridge out of liquid instead1.
When the solution is injected into a damaged rodent spinal cord, it turns into a gel-like solid, says Stupp. The scaffold is designed to disintegrate after four to six weeks, hopefully leaving healthy spinal cord behind.
Self-assembly
The liquid is made up of negatively charged molecules. Normally, they repel one another and keep the substance in liquid form. But when the fluid encounters positively charged molecules - such as the calcium or sodium ions found in living tissue - they clump together. "The effect happens almost instantly," says Stupp.
The molecules are designed to aggregate in a particular way, forming a mass of tiny, hollow tubes. Each tube is about 5 nanometres wide - 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair - and several hundreds of nanometres long. The structure is porous, allowing nerve cells to grow through and around it.
The team also laced each molecule in the liquid with a tiny protein fragment that nerve cells can recognize and latch on to. This may aid the development and growth of nerve cells, speculates Stupp.
It's a sophisticated system, says David Mooney, who studies tissue engineering at the University of Michigan. It allows you to control the physical and biological make-up of the structure.
Bridging the gap
But there are many hurdles to overcome. Even with the chemically laced scaffolding in place, nerve cells may still struggle to regrow.
After a spinal-cord injury, the surrounding cells multiply to form a dense scar, explains spinal-cord researcher Elizabeth Bradbury from Kings College London. This barrier is impenetrable to nerve cells, so enzymes that can break it down may also need to be added, she says.
To give spinal-cord repair an extra boost, the team also tried introducing fresh nerve cells into the system. When they added stem cells - cells that can turn into other, specific types of cells, such as nerves - to the scaffolding solution, they turned into neurons and began to grow within the solidified bridge. The team plans to try to do the same thing in damaged rodent spinal cords.
