Comments:Due to ever-increasing attempted spam and hacker attack attempts on our SBM web site, we have installed some seriously hi-tech 'block' and 'trap' types of protective functions for the SBM site that operate invisibly in the 'background'. These act when suspicious sources access our site.

Recently, however, such an attack crashed our isp host's server assigned to us for a period of time.

We therefore have instituted a specific total block on ALL of the known source-isp's of spam and hacker attempts. This means that anyone using any of THOUSANDS of isp providers around the world that have been identified as sources of problems will no longer be able to access our SBM website.

This will unfortunately result in some unavoidable 'collateral damage' wherein some good users located outside of the USA may not be able to access our site. This may occur if the isp/web service provider that they use has also been identified as a problem source.

Country-areas involved in current spam/attack attempts are primarily, but not limited to: China, Russia, Nigeria, Rumania, Panama and many others.

I make my own molds so I can make custom sized soap, and just love the convenience of plugging my recipe in, adding dimensions, and having all the amounts figured in an instant! So much easier than resorting to math and doing it myself!!! :)

Comments:Hi Delores

This is a new website for us as of May, 2010 and is still being developed as we go. All should be well and functional & has been for quite a while, now (email me if you find any 'glitches').

We normally sell retail, but we will certainly honor a NY tax resale certificate.

I've sent you a direct email re how to get a certificate copy to us.

Comments:The Summer Bee Meadow website uses a program called "Mollom" to block spam access attempts - about 160 each day!

In answer to customer requests, we've removed the "captcha" gateway from our site account registration page and the 'request forgotten password" page.

This should be more convenient for users (and Mollom has other ways to block spam access).

By the way, one does NOT need to create a site account to place an order! Just go ahead and do your order and the site will create a username and password for you. In the future, you only need to use your same email address to log in or to place an order (with or without logging in).

Having an SBM site username and password allows one to view orders status and history and to post at our new SBM Soapmakers Forum,

Comments:It's finally done!

Two month's work and many insomniac nights have gone into our new Summer Bee Meadow Advanced Soap Calculator.

The new Advanced Calculator is now available at our SBM website's blue navigation buttons bar.

With it, you can formulate solid, liquid or cream soaps. For liquid and cream soaps, alternate water-only or water-plus-alcohol methods are presented. Mixed alkali - potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide in any percentage proportion desired - are available and accurately calculated. You can now make correctly calculated mixed-alkali liquid soaps - something entirely new! Try making a 5-10% NaOH/95-90%KOH liquid soap instead of adding thickeners.

I have some work left to do on the 'help' links, but the calculator itself is fully functional.

It's 3:00 am here and this should be the last late-night on this project...

Enjoy using our new SBM Advanced Soap Calculator. It's my gift to you.

Comments:A note to our customers and users of our SBM website:

I have been burning the 2:00 am oil working on a new 'Advanced Soap Calculator' for the last two weeks.

The new calculator is able to give results specifically for Solid, Liquid or Cream Soaps and allows for alcohol or non-alcohol methods for Liquid and Cream Soaps and mixed sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide alkali types for Liquid or Cream Soaps.

As the new calculator is intended for more advanced soapmakers and its various options can be somewhat off-putting for novices, we will continue to host our original SBM Soap Calculator as before.

I cannot at this time promise a date for the public debut of the Advanced Calculator, but estimate it to be done around the third week of April.

Keep on soaping!

Comments:I'd suggest using regular, milled oatmeal as if for breakfast. Not the quick-cook kinds. You can add it to the soap by pre-soaking it in hot water to soften it first and adding it as a 'slurry'. You can also use a blender to powder it. I use an old Braun blender to make soap with and it has an attachable small dry-ingredients chopper/blender that works just great for this. You can also use a coffee-grinder (new, no coffee in it) to reduce or powder dry ingredients. Larger quantities require a larger device - we have a small countertop food processor that works well. Don't add oatmeal to the water you will mix with the lye, as the lye will immediately attack the oatmeal and produce a foul odor. The same applies to honey and other organic food-type additives, including milks. Instead, add them to the soap at "trace" and mix-in to swirl or blend as you wish. Adding the additive to a small quantity of water or glycerine before adding to soap is a good idea. A hint - before adding honey to your measuring spoon or scoop, dip the spoon or scoop into glycerine, first. Honey won't stick to the utensil that way and you'll be sure to get all that you measured into your soap. I would limit any honey to small amounts to avoid the lye-breakdown smell problem. If it's the honey smell that you want, note that beeswax imparts some honey scent and doesn't suffer from the lye-reaction odor problem. There are some excellent honey or honey-oatmeal scents available on the internet, too. Sweetcakes.com used to have an excellent Honey and Honey-Oatmeal scent available in small quantities, although I haven't patronized them for some time. Keep any beeswax content small. We use 1% beeswax in all of our soaps. It also can help in emulsifying the initial reacting soap broth and seems to keep down the sodium carbonate "white stuff" you may see on the top of your finished soap block. (Covering with Saran Wrap right after pouring helps real well).

When you get a handle on using oatmeal and/or honey to your liking, you should try a Honey, Oats & Goatsmilk soap by using Meyenburg Evaporated Goats Milk or the powdered version of same. Milk soaps are another degree of project, as one has to add milks ONLY at the 'trace' stage, blending thoroughly. Adding milks to lye-water first will produce a smelly mess. In fact, all soaps with organic contents may have an 'off' smell when you cut them at first that goes away while the bars are curing/drying later. If you want to keep the finished bars from being a darker, brownish color, you'll have to control the temperatures used, keeping them down to 120 or so (that's not gospel and everyone has a different opinion on this). We process our soaps in a constant-temp 'soap oven' at 160 degrees for four hours and I personally prefer the complete saponification and smoother soaps we get that way to limiting the temp. to keep the color light.

By the way, I LOVE our Oatmeal, Milk & Honey soaps!

As to the benefits of using oatmeal, honey or milks in soaps, that gets into "soapmaking lore", not science. I'd suggest that you read various references for same on the internet or in some of the soapmaking books for sale at our site. You'll find various thoughts on benefits among them and you'll find which appeal to you. "Soapmaking lore" is a very individual thing that some have very strong and maybe conflicting thoughts on. Exploring opinions at any of the more polite soapers' forums would be a great idea, but watch out for the several forums that are dominated by a few who occasionally deride others' thoughts, as nobody needs that game....

If you have any questions on your soaping journey, feel free to message me through our sites' Contact Us blue-button link.

Comments:FINALLY.... I've had a chance to get quite a lot of work done on the SBM Advanced Soap Calculator (V2.0). It will do solid soap just like the old one, but can do cream soaps and liquid soaps, too!

The background program is almost all done and will shortly be fully functional for solid soaps (the old calculator will still be available as always, too). I have some output formatting work to do and have to do & tie-in the output/instructions pages for cream soaps and liquid soaps before those will be fully functional.

I actually started this project two years ago, but got sidetracked by the several thousand car enthusiasts that inundated us then and by a road accident and some seriously crappy health since then. I've finally had the time to work for this - a 'silver lining' to being mostly house-bound these days)

Next will come getting some really nice soapmaking molds done for sale - Another project that got sidetracked a couple years ago... I Have the prototype mold & cutters all ready and need to get my workshop area set up to make some more.

Then I hope to get some pictures posted at the SBM website of the homemade soapmaking oven we use to make our own soaps (hot process in-the-mold). Materials cost is about $100; has heat & light; a thermostat for temperature control & a timer. We pour the soap into the mold, cover with Saran wrap & "cook" it at 160 degrees for 4 hours. It shuts itself off & is ready to cut for drying the next day. Fully saponified, no 'curing' needed, just drying time. The molds, some nice cutters and the oven let us cut 36 or 48 bars that are all the same size & weight, so we can weigh them to decide when they can be cut & wrapped. It's a great system for production and makes beautiful, uniform bars.

I haven't decided if I will make any ovens for sale, as time & shipping might be a problem. If I don't, I might make plans available, instead.

Stay tuned, please, and I'll keep you updated.

Comments:Thank you for your comment/suggestion, Eleanor. We are located in Baldwinsville, NY 13027.

Please note that shipping via USPS Priority Flat Rate options is priced independent of location. Effectively, the only purchases for which ship costs are dependent on location are those that might contain sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, as we don't ship those any way other than UPS Ground service (to avoid the considerable 'hazmat' fees and regulations).

Potential shipping costs for any purchase can be easily estimated without any obligation by adding items to our shopping cart and using the "estimate shipping" feature. This will allow selection of ship method and respond with applicable expected costs.

As to your suggestion, we will include "Baldwinsville, NY as part of our copyright statement so it shows at the bottom of every website page. Thank you for your suggestion - I'm open to any other comments/suggestion you may have.

Comments:12/29/2009: My health is better and I have appropriate time to work on SBM. The result is a brand new website while keeping the familiar feel and features of our old one. Systems are in place and stock counts are being entered now. More coming - stock levels will be a bit light for a while, yet.

We're almost done & ready to re-open on Jan 3rd. If you're a soapmaker and a prior customer, look for coupons worth 15% off in your email, soon!

Some major changes:
--We dumped the "Cool Cart" system we were using, as it charged purchases to accounts immediately. Our new integrated "Ubercart" system places an approval authorization on accounts, but does not charge the account until the purchase is shipped. Credit cards are accepted securely through the PayPal system for now (no PayPal account needed). A more direct credit card payment function via our own secure (ssl) link will be installed shortly, though it will still route to PayPal's "Pro" system.
--Our new website (constructed over 3 weeks with the Drupal CMS framework) integrates a full inventory management system. If an item is out of stock, you will see it as such. The system will block any attempt to purchase an item that is out of stock.
--Direct links to USPS and UPS provide shipping cost quotes based on customers' inputs. UPS shipment entries are automatically input by our system, eliminating much work and speeding shipments to customers.
--Status of your shipment can be checked through the clear link at top right of our pages at any time and prior orders can be reviewed, too.

It has been, as they say, "a hell of a year"... Chronic almost-disability flaring up seriously; the economy shattering; employer lay-offs; banks dropping financing for small businesses (way to go, Wells Fargo); an absurd invasion by thousands of 'hydroxy' car enthusiasts who want hydroxide chemicals to build arcane devices to do miracles for their engines (while voiding their warranties); sudden large increases in chemicals' wholesale costs and a road accident on a homemade electric commuting bike that cost me a cracked skull and almost cost an eye (despite the helmet).

2010 should be a WHOLE LOT better!

--Steve M.

"3-Oils Soap Recipe For Beginners" gives our 3-Oils formula, which is an average of fifty 3-oils recipes that we surveyed on the net. As such, it is literally an average soap recipe formula and is a great place to start your soapmaking hobby experience. It goes on to explain how one can use our SBM Soap Calculator and Recipe Resizer to use our 3-Oils formula for your own mold size and how to move on from there to experiment with new formula recipes.

"Properties of Soapmaking Oils" gives lots of useful information on the many oils that are available for use in soapmaking and the qualities that they can impart to your resulting soaps. Also given is information in massage oils and lotions applications. Lots of interesting information here! (If you wish to contribute to this info compilation, please email me).

Comments:We've made some small adjustments to our SBM Soap Calculator...

We've adjusted alkali computations to reflect the fact that neither sodium hydroxide (NaOH) nor Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) are 100% pure.

For NaOH, we've adjusted to a 99% expected purity of NaOH used. You'll see a little more NaOH required for a given soap formula at a given superfat percentage. This more accurately reflects reality.

For KOH, we've adjusted to reflect the fact that KOH flakes always contain a significant proportion of water bound up in its crystal structure (that's why liquid soap recipes are so tricky to handle - more on this later...). We've assumed 1% impurities and 9% water content for KOH to make liquid soap calculations more accurate.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
