| Comments: Hi, I live in Florida and I have rats. I bring home girl rats from the animal shelter where I volunteer. If they are alone there for a long time and seem lonely, I adopt them. I have two girls now, ages 1 and 3. I lost my old friend Ratta Sue at age 4 to cancer earlier this year, and I replaced her with a young rat that I named Caprice. My other rat, Sissy, is enormous. Their big cage sits on my coffee table so I can see them all day. I love to hold them and they like to "ride around" down my shirt. I also have two indoor cats, two feral cats outdoors, and several raccoons that I feed every evening. I love animals, and I think rats are adorable, sweet natured, affectionate pets. I am 60 years old and I will keep rats as long as I am able to. I recommend them to anybody who is lonely or has time to fill. They are little trouble to keep clean, actually my Sissy is litter trained. My new rat Caprice doesn't have the hang of it yet, but I keep hoping she'll take to the litter tray. It keeps the cage so much cleaner that way. I make their food from things I get at the health food store, along with cereals,and every night they get a bowl of fruits and vegetables. They particularly enjoy jars of baby food, i.e. the corn casserole, peaches, pears and peas. My husband built them little wooden houses and they store their food in the large one and then both pile into the little house to sleep. They fight sometimes so I have a time-out cage as well. Sissy is blonde and white with black eyes and Caprice is white with Siamese markings on her face and ears and she has pink eyes. They like to be brushed, I use a soft child's toothbrush. I also shampoo them occasionally. If you are considering rats I hope you get some. If you own rats, I'm sure you enjoy their company as much as I do. | Comments: I bought 2 female "feeder rats" at my local pet store for a few bucks a piece. I bought one first, and a month or so later decided she needed a friend. They clicked right off the bat! It's like they're sisters! They play, they fight, and cuddle up together in the day! I have 2 young children and they are perfect little pets for the kids. We love 'em! | Comments: I must say, thank you for making this website. I have two rats (Nora, an agile, sleek and positively hyperactive doe; and Mizu [Japanese for water -- she likes to sit on the water bottle], a slightly chunky, lazy doe) who have, to my surprise, lived with me since April without any problems.
Strangely, Nora and Mizu love baby food for reasons I don't understand. Even so, they are very picky about their food -- they won't even EAT cheese if I give it to them. Again, thank you for the website: as far as I can tell, it holds all the knowledge a ratmaster (or ratmistress) should know about rats. :) Carry on! |

| Comments: I found the article on longevity and rats very interesting. My pet hooded rat, Bella, just died yesterday at the age of 3 years and 3 months. She was able to live a healthy life until a couple of months before her death when she had a stroke that caused her to lose mobility in her hind legs. At that point I made certain to make up for the discomfort in her life by making an extra effort to play with her and feed her by hand when possible. It made a difference, and she would often become too anxious in her cage and frustrated when she could not scratch. I agree that a longer lifespan is not necessarily a better life unless the rat is able to live a quality life until close to death. Luckily, Bella was able to platy up until about the day before she died, and always able to eat well. When I noticed she was extremely lethargic I immediately took her out of her cage and kept her warm, and then called the vet- I knew it was time for her, and that she could not live long this way. I asked for them to put her to sleep, but then changed my mind after arriving at the vet. I still had the doctor take a look at her in case I was wrong, but he confirmed that she was old and it was time for her to go. I decided to take her home that night and placed her on a heating blanket wrapped in a shirt to keep her warm. She was extremely dehydrated and wouldn't eat or drink. I dropped a little bit of water on her mouth and a few minutes later she crawled out of the blankets and made an effort to walk. I immediately fed her banana, grapes, and some water, which she ate rapidly. Soon she was able to play a little, but then she got tired. I cuddled her up in the blanket next to me and she eventually went to sleep, and the next morning she died. I was extremely sad that she had died, but I had also prepared myself to have her put to sleep because I did not want her suffering. I am grateful that I was able to enjoy her companionship for so long, but I am also glad that she did not suffer through old age for much longer than she had to. Rats make awesome companions, but always remember that they, just like us, want to live quality lives. | |

| Comments: One thing I noticed is you said that wood shavings were safe to use. I do know that some woodshavings cause allergic reactions. My mama rat athena (She just had babies I was looking for information to help me ensure the will be healthy.) Had a horrible reaction to one type of wood shaving, But I dont know what it was. It actually caused her nerves to swell and she feels itchy even though they haven't been in the wood for over a year. I know there is atleast one type of wood that is safe. But I dont know what it is.

| Comments: I was browsing through web pages to piece together information sheets and give out the URLs of informative websites on rats, hamsters, gerbils and others animals in preperation of starting my own pet store after managing one for four years. I dont think that you were very polite in insinuating that buying from a pet store would be irresponsible, and encouraging irresiponsible breeding. I've have a total of six pet rats all purchased at petstores, and Ive had the misfourtune of working with individual breeders that you claim are so much better than pet stores themselves. Yes, most rats are just snake food, it is the food chain and there is no other way around it. Snakes cannot be vegetarians.
All I'm saying is that petstores should not all be categorized in the same manner. At our store we sell two types of rats, the well socialized type for pets and the unsocialized ones at feeders. Both groups are equally cared for and have their cages maintained. NOT ALL PETSTORES ARE BAD, I wouldnt be doing it or have anyone working for me without a obvious passion for animals and the motivation to do the right thing and not people that 'could apparently care less'. |

It has been a long time since the falls, but Abe, the dominate one has sudden weight gain, and is starting to be very aggressive. Mort is starting to shows more signs of aggressivness. Its amazing to see and makes me want to start breeding as well but I have to wait untill I get my own place which won't be for another 2-3 years...YUCK! I'll wait paciently though. Can anyone help me. I have recently taken ownership of 2 does 'Ruff' and 'Tumble' and I need some advice. I talk to them and the boldest one 'Tumble' comes to me and licks my fingers but when I pick them both up they jump out of my hands and I am worried they may hurt themselves. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get them to accept me as I would really love to hold and pet them, and let them climb around my neck etc. I used to have a friend who had a rat that would snuggle up on his lap and would travel around on his shoulder. I really want them to become a big part of my family and would be so happy if I could hold them without them jumping away from me. I loved looking at your lovely Rats & there babies. I am not to sure if i will ever get any more rats after my Muffin,but i will have a life long love of such gentle, loving,playful & intelligent animals. My Rats have given me many hours of companionship & love over the years. They are well looked after & loved, & i do not mind any vet bills as they are entilted to there health for the love & companionship they have given me over the years. | Comments: I feel that rats are people they are mis under stood animals one day rats are going to rule and all the rat lovers are going to be known as kings and queens I rescue rats and mice and so far the only difference is that mice smell very bad. butt I love them all the same.I have a lot of snakes butt my mice and rats are PETS! and only pets, never food when I breed them I sell them as pets not fedder animals. I love snakes alot too I have been raised with them and ever since last year now I have 4 mice, and 5 rats. and one is on the way I really trust petsmart and am about to adopt one rat from there. I went to petco and I bought two rats,and one mouse just because I felt bad for them they were very sick,and stressed so I adopted them. The mouse that I got was in a cage with 30 other mice! butt I love them all and all of my rodents are sweet and alive except for one I got from petco she was soo sick she stopped breathing and eventually died. I also saved a baby mouse from when his eyes wern't even open to the age he is now he was snake food and they thought he was dead and threw him into the bush I ran and took him in side and raised him up I fed him every three hours including night.

| Comments: I'm back to praise this site again. Benny and Dodge are doing very well and have just discovered the delights of mealworms after my brother gave me some that his pet lizard couldn't eat. They stuffed themselves and I now use them instead of normal rat treats as they are probably more healthy. I absoloutley love the site and can't wait until you start breeding again so I can see some more pictures! Thanks for all the help, the site is amazing, I would recommend it to anyone.

I've done much research on how to properly care for my pet rats but this website provides even more information, especially on how to sociallize new adult rats. My first Rex/Dumbo mix rat, Beanie, is not very fond of my newer Himalayan Siamese rat, Sylan. Ever since I brought Sylan home, Beanie would sniff at him, and attack him(even at one point grabbing the skin on his back and lifing him up with his teeth while Sylan screamed but I was able to seperate them before any serious injuries resulted). Obviously, they're housed in two cages for Sylan's safety but since reading on how to introduce them, perhaps in a few weeks, they may be able to be roomates and I will be able to let them roam the room together instead of one at a time. Thank you for this information and this website has been added to my Favorites. I hope to join a Rat Club sometime as well, I've been thinking about it for quite some time. | |

Icurrently share my 2 rats 1 female 1 male with my 4 children. we have lots of fun with them.my Mom about killed me when I brought them home, now she makes breakfast for her and my rats she shares her pop with them(only 1 tsp.) for each one. it is just funny now how mom is with them.mom is closer to my male rat we have had him longer. we DO NOT believe in breading them cause I would keep them all, mom would kill me then.all my friends dont like rats but my male rat every one likes him,tell ya why have u ever seen charlotes web? Templeton on the movie is how he acts. that is also his name. he is FAT. thank u for lettin me type this all up. |

| Comments: I have five pet rats left out of seven Sasha,Biancia,Corneilios,Theodore,Brocket. My girls are almost three & starting to show thier age ,Sasha is a golden fawn she hates going back into her cage she just wants to cuddle into my hair ,she even has naps with me.
Ikeep all my rats together in one big cage &they get to run in my landing every night.I thought my girls were infertile (menopausal) but last night when i cleaning thier cage i noticed Biancia acting wierd i lifted her up to find three wee babies two of them were very still i got such a shock.Irushed Biancia to another cage with the moving pup i tryed to stimulate the other two but no luck ,it was so sad.This morning when i looked in on her she went for me but i was so glad to know she was protecting her wee baby . Who knows maybe she has had more (fingers crossed).I guess i will find out in a few weeks im so excited |

| Comments: Hello, Nadia from france, I have actually 10 rats at home, 6 females, 4 males, I love them for long years and it's true to say that how lovely, clever and smart are rats. To have so much rats, I have a lot of space for them, they love running all around my bed, and leak hands to ask for kisses. They are always free at home, so they eat all things they found (you can't imagine how many clothes I have full of holl!!!) they are so sweet...
