Comments: Congratulations to our new HKSA committees!

Running a BIG association is very challenging, but running a small one like HKSA is not easy either. I wish you guys work well this year, and even more important, work happily.
I also wish our members can support the committees, and be united together!

As some of you have known, I may not be always available on the weekend's functions. So, I wish you guys have fun this friday and saturday. Take more pics to share with us =)

Finally, if the new committees are interested to know more about the history or the old story of HKSA, just email or call me. This is my pleasure to share with you. Good luck!

Best Wishes,

1.3 billions USD sales a year.... advanced technology blah blah blah. It could be an MBA case study.... but what the hell with an MBA. These guys don't have an MBA.

Comments: Wow, that sure is a good alternative to gasoline and our overly dependent to Middle East countries.

When you think about it, a barrel of oil cost about $40. One barrel = 42 gallons and each gallon is about $2 at the pump. That means a barrel of oil will yield $84 of gas at the pump. Of course, there are all kind of processing and refining cost, so it is not really a 100% pure profit. But please keep in mind that a barrel of oil will yield thousands of byproducts (plastic, chemcial, drugs, etc), that's where the real money comes in. In short, I believe the high cost of gas is not because oil is rare or hard to get, it is simply the greed of the oil companies.

Biodiesel maybe able to break us from the control of cooperate companies, and give us another option. This will sure help the balance of the market.

I personal would put my money on "clean energy" like hydrogen or electric. Combustion simply create too many problems and not the most energy efficient.

that's my 2 cents... =)

Comments: I used to read about people able to turn food waste and vegetables into diesel long time ago. However, I wasn't realized that the price on turning vegatables oil into fuel is only about USD .7/ gallaon. That means it is somwhat closer to reality in using biodiesel. About 4 or 5 years ago, I read a news about some people are smuggling "vegetables oil" in HK to fuel taxi because the HK's fuel tax make it entirely possible and "very sensible" to smuggling biodiesel. In short, Newsweek report that the biodiesel cost USD 2.89/ gallon and petroleum cost 2.35 /gallon. I am very amaze by this news. Comments: To kong kim chin (or whatever your real name is),

Dude, since I am not part of the committee, what I am gonna say has nothing to do with the club and it just represents my opinion. Well, it seems to me that you really dont like the way how the club is running right now. Why dont you go talk to them? Tell them what you think they are not doing well enough and how they can make it better.

There is no point in using a fake name posting insulting messages on the board. That doesnt do any good to anybody and doesnt change a damn of the club. I personally consider it as an act of a coward. In a worse case, maybe you were aiming at something else when you posted that message. I dun care what you are trying to do in here, I am telling you that you are not gonna get what you want cause we Hong Kong people are all united in here when we need to.

I dont mean that posting your opinion on the board is wrong. Actually, it helps the committees to have a better look of how the others think toward what they did. Its just your attitude I cant stand for and have to say something. Somehow I agree with some of your points, how come we didnt have an activity for the Chinese new year. But one thing I did better than you did was I tried to understand their situation. You cant ask them to run a perfect club, they are all students, not full time organizers and they didnt get paid doing the job.

Something I really appreciate is that they gave up their own time to serve the others no matter whether they did a good job or not. I think a person like you will never learn how to volunteer even if you spend a lifetime searching for it. Cause people like you only know how to complain. The committees have to take care of the club and their courses in the same time. Every time when they are preparing for an event is an extra workload for them. Just like Felix and Sophia, they skipped classes preparing for the I-buffet. Where were you when we all were preparing for the food ? Did you say something when the committees asked for what to cook? Did you even have a look at our BBQ pork? If all three answers are negative, you are not even qualified to comment on what we did in the I-buffet and also you missed a wonderful job by our committees.

What caused the big black box you mentioned before is someone like you who doesnt contribute and complains. Now, thats what I call PATHETIC.

Felix, Joseph, Sophia and Brianplease dont let some selfish opinions turning you guys down and keep the good works up. We are always here to help when you guys need us.

I hope somehow you really think about I mean in this message.

By the way, if you wanna leave any further comment to the club, please dont hind behind the computer and use your real name. My name is Garrick, Hoi Kit Leung.

Comments: Firstly, I would like to show my appreciation for the factual comments given by Brian, Sophia and Felix. They have reiterated the function and purpose of the Hong Kong Student Association and the operation policy of the Association.

Secondly, the Association upholds democracy and we are liberal enough to collect different voices from members. The committee members make decision based on the needs and requests of the majority. We are open-minded and we welcome constructive ideas.

Finally, I must say that it is my very wish that we all would stand firm in the Associations vision and mission so that we would be seen as a first-class team with high spirit. We will continue to contribute to the Association in supporting one another and we should be proud of being a member of the Association.

Comments: Dear Kong Kim Chin

Thank you for your opinions. We are opened to receive any opinions from our members.

Although I cannot figure out your name from our member list, followings I assume you are, but just using pseudonym. My secretary and treasurer have given their responses. Here I just give some supplementary notes on top of them and solve our problem in a peaceful way.

First of all, for you goodness, I would kindly advise you to be careful about your wordings, such as "cheap bastard", "stupid award". Here I personally do not comment about on your wordings. You absolutely have the right to use your own wordings to express your feeling. But just to remind you that the involved parties also have their right to sue you if they feel being insulted. This is a kind advice for you to protect yourself, and let your statements sound more objective.

Next, I would like to clarify what is election and committee members. Why an election is needed? Because even in the same group, there are different opinions.
The ideal case is to let all members to vote for every tiny decision. Yet, this is impractical in terms of efficiency. So we need an election to choose a subgroup, called the committees members, to represent the rest of the group, to make reasonable decisions on behalf of them. This subgroup may not be trusted by everyone in the group, but most of them. That means, even you did not vote for this, as long as you are a member, they still represent you. Otherwise, you can choose to quit the group, or if you can gather enough supports from other members, you can vote to dismiss the committees. The responsibility of this group is not to consult every thing from every member every time, but to provide sufficient communication channels to deliver the related news, and to collect the opinions, and based on them, make the right decisions.
That's one of the major tasks we target on this year, such as email list, newsgroup, message board, etc. Surely, there is a risk that communication channels could be misused. But we there is no doubt that the foreseeable benefits for running these communication channels overrides the possible risks. And we did, we do, and we will frequently monitor their uses, and give proper actions in case of misuse. The two examples given by you are not "misuses" after our evaluations, because they are closely related to HKSA and our members' benefits. But certainly, if you cannot agree with our evaluations, and feel annoying for receiving emails from our email list, you always have the choice to unsubscribe from the list by giving us a notification.
This is how the email list works in many formal organizations.

Finally, I would like to share with you what's my thinking of running a club. The ideal case is to provide everything that the can satisfy all members. But again, this is usually not the case with limited resources. To be very honest, HKSA is a small organization, with small number of members, small number of committees, small number of budget. We do not do perfect under this constraint, but as the President of HKSA, I am proud of what my committees have achieved, and really thanks for the members supports. We are glad to see your passion in Chinese Culture, and we do the same. In our year plan, as posted in the website since we were elected, we also take China Week and Chinese New Year dumpling party as our important events for promoting Chinese Culture. We did the China Week and got a certificate from CSSA. But several reasons lead our decision to cancel of the CNY event: (i) CSSA held similar events at the same date we proposed. And we have delivered the messages to members to take the chance to feeling Chinese Culture. (ii) I-Week (another culture promotion event) consumed great amount of resources that is higher than our expectation. We can either make one event good by canceling another, or make two but both not that good. We evaluated that our members can easily gather dinner in CYN by themselves, but they cannot easily hold big events like I-Buffet. So, we choose to do I-Buffet, and turns out this was successful. Making choice is always painful, but necessary. So in response to your message, yes, we are busying with something else, this is another HKSA event.

I am really glad that you posted this message to let us know your concerns, and gave us a chance to explain to you. We will keep your words in heart, evaluate and improve our work. But I would like to give a final note that we do not feel wasting time in running a club. As we mentioned, we do not do perfect, but we learnt and get improved. And I also hope that you can learn something that things are not the simple or straightforward as you stated in your message. Again, communication between us is the best way to resolve misunderstanding.

Lastly, one of the next major events we are discussing is the next committee election. We are looking forward to hearing your valuable opinions, because pre-advice is more important than post-evaluation.

Best Regards

Comments: First of all, i would love to take this opportunity here to thank you our dear club member Mr Chin for his valuable opinion expressed in our message board dated March 19th 2005. However, i am afraid that i might not agree with some of the points that you made.

Yes, this club might be "pathetic" as it may seems, but i think it is just the way it runs. As it clearly stated in our constitution,

"As a member of the International Student Association (ISA), the purpose of the association is to help new students from Hong Kong to adapt to the environment of the Texas A&M University and to promote cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and international students. Moreover, HKSA is to develop and promote the general welfare and the intellectual, physical and social faculties of the members." (Please refer to the Constitution section, article two of this website)

I really do not know how you define the word "abuse". From what you have written here, it seems to me that you think our Listserve just keep sending you some information that you do not want to know. There must be some confusions in the e-mail and let me take this chance to clarify it a little bit:

1. PATHETIC emails about some chinese student award from local church

She is not "some chinese students", she was a member from HKSA and her name should be found in our "Contacts" section, under former member. Our advisor, Dr. Chin, just want to spread the good news amoung the club. I do not see anything wrong with it.

2. some cheap bastards want to get cheap airtickets

Mentioned earlier, the objective of setting up HKSA is to promote the welfare of the Hong Kong students here at Texas A&M University. Again, there are no such thing that you consider is inappropriate. Like, in asking help on ways to get cheap airtickets, looking for apartments, needing rides, or even getting a driver's license, because WE ARE HERE TO HELP!!!

I totally understand the reason why Mr. Chin is so furious about the Chinese New Year Dinner. As the Lunur New Year takes up a large part in our chinese culture, it is our fault that we did not held any party or dinner to celebrate. However, we did think it throughoutly before cancelling the event. Say like the group birthday dinner, nobody wanna come...So, from what we can see, there is a reason for cancelling the event. Again, I apologize for our inappropriatness in cancelling the event.

For the I-Buffet, I do not know if u came or not, the BBQ pork is a huge success. One more time, sorry for making such a short notice.

Another things i want to make it clear, if we have any activities, phone calls and e-mails should be received a week advanced. Members are also encouraged to check our website often to get updated about our events. If you are on our current member list, u should keep updated, I just wonder why u are on our listserv but not our member list, or is this simply is a mistake?

Furthermore, if you are interested in being a part of the HKSA committee members, please try to participate in any of the activities organized by HKSA, so that our members can get to know you.

One more thing, if u do not want HKSA to spam you anymore, please send an e-mail to Felix so that he can remove you from the mailing list.

Thank you for your valuable input.

Sophia
Current Treasurer of HKSA

Comments: It is pretty obvious that you are on our Listserv. As the secretary and the one who manages the Listserv, I cannot recall a person with the same name listed above on the Listserv, and I double checked. If you want some real discussion instead of anonymous name-calling and finger-pointing, please reveal yourself.

1. There is nothing wrong to know about awards won by some of our former members. And I can't see why can't we discuss about cheap tickets. If there is a way that we can get some cheap tickets home, why don't we share that? If you are so rich that you can afford thousands of dollars for a trip, that is your own business, but you can't take away others' right to know about this.

2. The president is not the only one who do phone calls. And if you really want to have some activities for the new year, why don't you talk to us? We had BBQ in the end of January and we have to prepare for the coming I-week, and we decided not to hold an activity in the Chinese new year.

3. Yes we might be a black box, a small black box consists of four committee members. When no one says anything about the I-buffet, we have to decide. Are you saying that we go serve "NW wind" if no one say anything? And in fact, BBQ pork is the most popular food of us this year. It is a sad fact that you haven't even have a chance to come try it out.

4. Please, if you are don't talk to us about anything and haven't even vote for the committee, simply do not make this kind of anonymous post. We committee members are willing to talk to you if you come to us.

5. Finally, if you really don't like to be on the Listserv, you can always opt out if you provide me your real e-mail address so that I can take you off.

Comments: this club is pathetic for the following reasons:

1. your email and personal information is being abused. you got PATHETIC emails about some chinese student award from local church or some cheap bastards want to get cheap airtickets. when I give you my email addy, I never agree to get notify when some Chinese not from HK get some stupid award from a Church event... and I also do not want to get massive email from someone asking the whole club for cheap tickets

2. where is the president? there is no activities, phone call, email, or even website message about Chinese New Year. this is the single most important event for ANY Chinese culture. HKSA does not respect any Chinese culture at all? or our president or person in charge are too busy with something else?

3. this club is just a big black box. the committees and president operated in their own way, in their own world. they never even ask what the members want or need. why did we have BBQ pork for ibuffet? who decided that? I did not vote for it for sure

please, if you are too busy or dont know how to run a club, simply do not run for the post. this will save your time and other people's time

so now they are going to ASSIGN another CE to HK... is that a good thing?

HK lost 2 things...
1. One country 2 systems... there is only ONE COUNTRY ONE SYSTEM now.. it is all Chinese system
2. Why would you hope Chinese to assign someone better, instead of wishing you can cast a vote to elect someone better? In case you dont understand, HK people not happy is not ALL because of Tung... it is because of the system, it is because that they cannot vote or pick the one that can represent their voice...

Reading newspaper wont make you smarter... USE YOUR BRAIN and THINK will !!!

However, things may be more conservative in Western TX.

As a forigen student, you are here to learn from others. You suppose to keep an open mind, but yet respect and appreciate other cultures. Why go to a forigen country if you worry others will affect your way of life?

Comments: Q: What Makes Water Hard?
A: The words "hard water" describe water that contains calcium and magnesium, the hardness minerals. Rain water begins as soft water, free of these minerals. As rain water passes over and through the earth, flowing into lakes, rivers, streams and ground water, it absorbs the hardness minerals. While these minerals aren't harmful to your health, they do affect the properties of water and its effectiveness for washing and cleaning.

Q: Why Soft Water Is Such An Advantage Around The House?
A: Not only does soft water turn tough cleaning jobs into easy work, it also saves money and time. You need less soap to get clothes and dishes clean. You can say good-bye to annoying water scaling and soap scum as well as stubborn tub rings. Your pipes and appliances remain stain- and clog-free, requiring less maintenance and repair.

Q: How Your Water Softener Turns Hard Water Into Soft Water?
A: The principle behind water softening is really just simple chemistry. A water softener contains resin beads which hold electrically charged ions. When hard water passes through the softener, calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the charged resin beads. It's the resulting removal of calcium and magnesium ions that produces "soft water." The diagram shows the exchange that takes place during the water softening process.

Forwarded From: "Lee, Soo Jin"

Hi, my name is Soojin Lee, a graduate student from Korea.
I'm interested in conducting the research regarding the
current boom of Korean culture, such as K-pop and TV drama, in ,china or
Japan and its potential influence on their travel behavior.
(I'm very interested in why Asian people even visit Korean to see
the stars or to visit the location of the drama made)
As the first step, I want to find out basic opinions, such as why people
are so much into Korean drama, why Korean actors/singers are so popular in
Asia, and so force.

The interview is totally casual. I just want to hear your opinion.
So, if you are interested in Korean pop culture or have any idea why it
has become so popular in Asia, can you please directly e-mail me
sjlee73@tamu.edu or e-mail Kam at Kamh@neo.tamu.edu.

Thank you
