| Comments: I came across this website, and needless to say, enjoyed it immensely. Yes ... I have been the proud owner of lots of rats for the past 17 years. I once bought a pregnant rat as well. Needless to say, I couldn't part with any of her nine babies. They were so adorable. I simply loved them to bits. Rats are the most wonderful pets. Once you had them, you can never life without them.

| Comments: Hey again! I posted several months ago, but I thought I'd come back and mention I'm building a new, small scale aviary for my birds (all 11 of them!!!) using your rat cage instructions. Total cost, including those plastic ties found in the plumbing section? $89 bux canadian! I'm presently making doors and it's taking me a while to build it. The thing is so friking huge, I had to build it __IN__ the bird room. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to fit it through the studio door! It's taken 2 days for me to get this far, with today taken off, so my poor hands can relax!
The cage is 41 inches tall, 41 inches wide and 41 inches long. I bought 4 rolls of hardware cloth that were 5 feet long and I simply used the plastic ties to tie the cage walls together. (BTW.. if you go the plastic tgies route, make sure you buy a MINIMUM of 400 of those buggers!). Then I used the excess i cut off to make the floor and roof. I still have enough wire left over to form a door, some shelves and wire ladders. I got nasty blisters because of all the wire cutting, but believe me.. to see my cockatiels, finches and budgies happy and having lots of room to fly.. .its worth every scab, cut and blister! Thanks for all the tips! This cage wouldn't have been a success without you! |

| Comments: I wish I had your cage instructions when i started making my cockatiel cage! AAK! What I created turned out to be a horrible, mangled, PAINFUL mess. For one thing, it's triangle shaped! LOL! Now I know what to change for next time. I spent four hours wrapping wire to join the cage's cut pieces. The bird cage still needs a bottom (Gonna use a piece of plywood.) and I'm going to paint the wrapped wire. I won't bother painting the whole thing, despite the dire warnings my bird club has given me about galvanized wire. If I rinse it with vinegar and scrub it good to remove the zinc chunks I SHOULD be okay :-) !

Been raising remarkable ratties for some years now; brought about 40-50 or so of my favorite stock here to Alamogordo, NM from south of Chicago. Among my stable are "Dumbo" or "Elephant Ear"; but always looking to breed more colors, patterns, varieties as I can. Currently working with Rex for the first time. Sorry to say that I got into ratties after helping a breeder, due to my snake keeping. But, did consciously choose this endeavor to condition myself to accept nature's circle of life and otherwise brutal-seeming ways, more in keeping with my Cree-French Canadian Indian heritage. And I HAVE learned to let go, of ratties, anyway; 'course I save most of my breeders to their natural demise from old age. Think I have the most extensive & varied assort-ment around these parts, and delight in providing special ratties to others who love them. Thanks for the chance for rat chat & sharing your experience!

Just a thought about the sharp corners: you could coat them with a dab of epoxy resin or polymer resin, both available at hardware stores and craft stores. Once the goop has cured, it's fairly durable and resistant to ratty teeth, and shouldn't release any noxious fumes (we wouldn't want any stoned ratties, would we? :) Thanks again for the site, it's a great help! |

My first rat looked a lot like Cinder (Sami) and the other was an himilayan-albino (Lara). It was really hard losing them. My sister would always get mad at me because I would take Sami and Lara out of their cage and let them play together. My sister wasn't very fond of rats. We just came home with our 8th ,9th and 10th little rattlings. We were shopping for ideas on cages since we were going to try and build our own cage. But the pet store that we have loved told us they don't separate the sexes of the rats when they have a lot of them. We found this out after pointing out there were three girls in the boys cage and at least one of them was pregnant. So, I am no longer recommending them and we bought the three girls. We think two of the girtls are pregnant. I was surfing the net for information on rat gestation and birth. Then I found this beautiful site. Thank you for sharing your little ones with all of us. |

I've read in rat books that chewing on various wire cages (i can't remember which!) can possibly lead to cancer (chemicals and such...)...and my Yvonne dearly loves to chew. Is hardware wire mesh safe? I want it to be -so badly- so that Yvonne and Ivy can have the huge cage they've always dreamed of..but I'm concerned for their safely. | Comments: Hi, I think your site is pretty cool, but I was sad to hear about your bad experiences at PETCO. I was wondering what state you're in. I work at one in Minnesota. We also take in babie rats (if we have room). There, I'm called the Rat Lady and I just wanted to say that every rat that comes in is handled almost everyday, fed more healthy goodies than anyother store that carries ratties and is normally very social by the time they go to their new homes (at my store at least). I once had someone bring in some 6 month old rats in because she "didn't want them anymore." I ended up keeping one that had a fatty tumor. I've also brought in a litter of my own. I was so happy to see them go to loving homes with kids who want to play with an animal that will play back. Again, I'm sorry to hear that the PETCO you went to is a irresponsible store. It makes the good ones look really bad. About the "feeder" rats....I hate selling those. I almost cry everytime. All the rats that are brought up to PETCO that are not albino are sold as pets. The pets that are brought up that are albino, I try to sell as pets, but the other employees don't usually know they are pets, and we can't put them in the same habitat as the "fancy" rats (at my store). | |

I am sorry to hear that you lost CInder. I rememebr when I lost my rat to Pneumonia, which according to the Vet was brought on by some sort of a stress gene that rats have. (For the first year I had him he was allowed to run loose, but then when I moved I had to put him in a 55 gallon Tank, and he couldnt hack it) Its tough losing a pet. A lot of people dont realize how intelligent rats are. They really do make great, loyal, loving pets. Your page goes a long way towards showing that! Thanks! |

Everytime I'm sad I just go to their cages and they jump up and try to get to me. I am so proud of them. They are so good and they always seem so happy. I'm going away soon and they can't come. But their going to stay with a friend which also owns a rat. But I am going to miss their cute little faces. Every Sunday My boyfriend and I take them all out and we have a bonding moment for about and hour. They are so good with each other but sometimes they fight over Thareesa. But they never hurt each other. They show alot of love not only to me but each other. I am so glad I choose to care for them it has been a wonderful experience and I know even after they pass on which hopefully it won't be soon I will never forget them and always love them. rattler. I still have a few rats for companionship and company.The most emotional moment I had for pet rats was in 1993,in Oakland,CA. I had 2 bald,(hairless),rats in a separate cage from the general population of 7.They were br- other& sister.The sister came down with pneumonia.I tried as many types of medicine to cure her, but none worked.When it was her time to pass on, I took her brother out of the quarentine I had provided them with.She got up,came to the front of the cage,and with all of her strength,gave me a hard bite on my thumb.I took that as communication to tell me, "get my brother back in here"! As soon as I placed her bro. into the cage, Those 2 rats began to cuddle,nuzzle,and express as much love as I have ever seen 2 animals give. It was almost human,this show of affection.she finally passed on the next morning,however. I will never forget this absolutely fantastic show of total emotion. | Comments: It's nice to see all these
sites on domestic rats!! Nobody really understood the bond between Amanda & myself, but it's their loss...as well as my own. Even though she passed in October'96, I still think of her & how I wish she could've met my 2 sons. I had her for a 'lil over 1 year & she amazed me w/ her intelligence EVERY DAY!! To those who are reading this & have never had a pet rat, let me just say this...rats are very intelligent & they are wonderful companions-- especially if you live in a small apartment. I feel it's important that the steroetypes of rats in general need to broken down in order to form a whole new respect for these creatures. | Comments: We had two rats and really enjoyed them, until my 10 year old son came down with Rat bite Fever. Yes, there is such a thing!! He wasn't bitten by the rats, but he liked to kiss them, & he probably had a cut on his lip, or they liked a cut on his fingers. Anyway, he broke out with a rash on his feet & hands and had a high fever...his joints started aching and he could hardly walk. He ended up at Children's Hosp. for 5 days while they pumped penicillen into him. The infection settled into his ankle & it swelled...so after 2 weeks he had to have that flushed out & put in a cast & have a wheel chair for 2 weeks! We got our rats from Petco and they were feeder rats. Infectious Diseases got called in, because they had to figure out what he had. So be careful and be aware of these symptoms! | |

enjoy reading your journal and seeing your photos. You have given me great ideas to to get back at my mommy when I sneak out of my cage and my mom catches me and puts me back. Once Taffy (my sister) got out of her cage after she had surgery and she got back in her cage and acted like nothing happened. Our mommy fell for it until she found a big mess that Taffy had made. Don't tell our mom about the ideas! We also have a dog to humiliate. Along with our uncle Mickey the ferret. Mickey chases the dog (Odie) and plays a little to ruff with Odie, but they do get along great together. We dont have to do anything to Odie to scare him. We just wattle by and he gets scared and runs. But we do get our share as well. If we are out of our cage sleeping he will slobber all over us. Uh-oh my mommy is looking for me. I gotta go! Bye!
