Kimpton Village
Name: J.Silman
E-mail address: j.silman@ntlworld.com
Comments:I am researching my mother in laws family tree, and have found that many of her ancestors came from Kimpton. The Rolph family, the Moss family and the Bigg family in particular. Amos Moss born 1817, was the publican at The Two Brewers for many years and his son Frederick Moss was the local tailor and outfitter. The Rolph families mainly all worked as agricultural labourers and were known to have lived at Church Lane. There were marriages between all of these families. Would love to hear from anyone still living in the village with any of these surnames. Who knows they may be related!!

Comments:Dear Sir / Madam
I just wondered if you maybe interested in a new book (Further information upon request to j.evenhart@ntlworld.com) which has taken 30 years of research. It concerns Hertfordshires aviation history, related by factual eye-witness accounts, even interviews with Luftwaffe crew members shot down over here. First time ever published photographs of wreckage and crew members from the two B17`s that collided over Weston.A full report of the Messershmitt Me 110 that crashed at Claggy Bottom in Kimpton on 30th August 1940, mentioniong villagers names and two photographs of the crash site. The Hatfield raid on 3rd October 1940. The types of German bombs dropped in WW1 and 2, bombing densities, showing the most heavily bombed zones in Hertfordshire. Also a comprehensive list of aircrashes in Hertfordshire ( actually over 160 incidents between 1912-1945) Also artefacts liberated from crashes, anecdotes and artefacts that have been discovered at these sites, such as the US Airmans dog tag finally sent back to his family after lying for 62 years in the soil of a Hertfordshire field.
Kind regards Julian Evan-Hart

Comments:I found Kimpton somewhat by accident in 1982 when I was working in Harpenden and shortly afterwards bought a house there. It immediately became home and has remained such in my mind although circumstances have kept me away for most of the last 25 years. I was looking up the Kimpton May Fair for 2007 when I was drawn to making this entry on the web site. I especially remember Ron Hyde and his contribution to the village, John & Rita Boreham and Lin & David Pitcher. Hope I can be back soon and spend some time in the White Horse and Boot! My mum, my boyfriend and I were very shaken up and it couldn't have happened at a worst time as we were on our way to a funeral. Thanks to various people living in the area we manage to sort the situation out quickly and a man visiting a friend offered to give us a lift to the funeral. They were all so very kind and considerate. My family and i would like to thank those people who helped as they made a very difficult and upsetting situation a lot easier.

Thank you

Comments:In the late '60's, I lived in WGC and was in the Royal Observer Corps attached to an observation post that was sited in a small underground bunker just outside of Kimpton. I wonder if it is still there as it does not appear to be mentioned in the gallery. It was not signposted for obvious reasons but neither was it particularly hidden as the vent shaft and camera mounting (for recording an atomic blast position) as well as the access hatch were in view. Many of them reverted back to the owners of the land on which they stood at the end of the Cold War and are now largely forgotten or filled in. Do any of your Committee have any recollections of the one associated with Kimpton?

Kind Regards from Maurice Majurey orig. Sheerness, Kent, now Melbourne, Australia.

Comments:I was interested to find this site,as I was born and bred in kimpton and lived there from 1954 till I married and moved away in 1976. My parents, sister and a few of our old neighbours still live here, and I make once a week visits to the village. I have many happy memories of the school and the teachers there! Kimpton has changed too much in the past 20 - 30 years and the high street has lost a lot of its charm { far too much traffic and paked cars. I remember the old post office run by Mr& Mrs Grey and the main grcery shop, all in the high street. The church is the best part of the village, peaceful and timeless with great views across the farmland. Thank you for this interesting site, though it could do with some old photos of the village and maybe comments from some of the older residents of the village on their memories of the old Kimpton!

Comments:I lived in Kimpton for three years from 1984 until 1987 with my husband Patrick and our then three children Alexandra, Charlie and Virginia (we have since added Georgia to the list!) We lived on the green in Parkfield Crescent and then moved to 8 Dacre Crescent. In 1987 we moved to Wiltshire and sadly Patrick and I divorced four years ago, but we both still have very happy memories of Kimpton and walking with dogs and children in the beautiful countryside and many a happy, silly evening at The Cross Keys Pub at Gustard Wood!

Comments:Hello - I was in Kimpton recently as I'm doing an article on the Bottoms of Hertfordshire, which include Kimpton Bottom as well as many others! I very much enjoyed wandering around, especially around the very pretty church of St Peter and St Paul, and taking a few minutes to appreciate the many attractive cottages and houses that surround it. I'm also enjoying reading through your web site with more info on Kimpton. I live in Hatfield but have only lived in Herts for 6 years or so, so am still finding my way around!
With best wishes and thanks for this facility.

Comments:I have been researching my father's family name (TOMLIN) and note that many of my ancestors come from the Hitchin / Kimpton area.

I would love to hear from anyone who has information on the TOMLIN family. I have set up my family tree on GENESCONNECTED and I would be more than happy to share info with anyone who may be interested to see if there are any common names.
