Comments: Actually I first heard you on Radio National. Lucky Oceans played your version of 'Hallelujah' on the Planet one afternoon a couple of years ago. As a result I bought the Famous Blue Cheese CD and took my husband to see you when you played in Brisbane last year at the Burlesque Festival. Now I'm waiting eagerly for you to return to Brisbane so that we can expose our friends to your impressive musicianship. As a very devoted Leonard Cohen fan, I feel almost sacrilegious in admitting that I prefer your version of a couple of his songs to his!

Comments: Thanks very much indeed for the Leonard Cohen tribute night on Thursday at the Vanguard. We took our 14 and 15 year-old sons in the hope that they'd see there was more to musicianship and artisitic communication than the Red Hot Chili Peppers...and they did! We'd be hard pressed to say what our favourite song of the night was since we rarely agree. I loved 'Famous Blue Raincoat' interpreted by Abbe Dobson 'cos it was the first time I wasn't distracted by it's similarities with Leo Sayer's "When I Need Love". We all loved the richness of the instrumentation and outstanding individual talents of Marcello's piano accompaniment and solos and Eddie Bronson's impeccable tenor sax and bass clarinet work - especially the magical moment in 'Bird on a Wire' when Ngaiire looked across admiringly at the climax of his solo. (A huge compliment from such an awesome young talent as she is!)see next box for more comments.

Not a gramme of cheesiness about you, despite the name. What a wonderful blend of musical styles you've created & all wrapped up in energy, humour & stunning individual musicianship and interplay. It's music to "tickle the senses" (as I kept saying to myself), with twists & turns & surprises throughout. Not one moment where I thought you'd overplayed a solo or theme. Thanks for a marvellous evening of complete musical entertainment under the stars. Hope you didn't miss the plane after those great encores!

Comments: @NEWTOWN – Saturday 24/6/06 Bonsoir Monsieur “Tartan Tuxedo”! What a party! What a night! What a tonic for the mind, body (notably Santiago’s….) & spirit! Whilst dressed stylishly in your “coat” d’azur they are the wrong colours Yaron – Green & Gold (if you please) are the colours for the month! Certainly not the colours of the Italian “Azzurri”! That’s Bad Karma!! Such lightening energy for an uninterrupted set of virtuosic instrumentals and hearty sing-a-longs. Bravo! Encore! Bravo! Enormous Bronson-Binary horns, thrilling keyboards, sensual percussion and sterling strings along with sublime vocals and a world of music “sans frontieres”! What a feast of jazz and traditional gypsy ingredients spiced with knee-slapping, boot-scooting, hayseed-chewing country geetar! Add to that a dance-floor and a positively responsive audience-a recipe for a great musical cocktail! So many highlights, but to name a few they undoubtedly have to be Eddie’s passionate Latin bossa-nova style flute instrumental (I don’t think I have heard anything more beautiful) and the “EP” version of “Can I Have You Please?” which I believe is your best arrangement so far! I loved every single solo from every talented member of your super-group! Marcello’s magnificent piano solos, Andras’ chirping “budgerigar” on his violin and Mark’s coo-ee responses! And Santiago’s “stripped” guitar solos are just getting better & better! Cohen’s humorous “Jazz Police” continues to remind me of the keystone cops running about, and mass confessions abounded with “Repent”! What more can I say but “JOGA BONITO”!! (For the uninitiated….that’s Portuguese football speak for “beautiful play”!)

Comments: BRASS MONKEY – 17/6/06 Bonsoir Monsieur “Gigolo” The “Jazz Police” may have been at the “World Cup” in Germany on this occasion but those “Americano’s” and “Gigolos” from “Istanbul” were “Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin…..in their “Rawhide” down at the Brass Monkey in Cronulla! The audience could not stay in their seats for long before those infectious melodies and rhythms propelled many onto the dance-floor (which was not there!) Not even the veiled “bride-to-be” was safe! Yet another uplifting performance by your fluid line-up! Also great to hear Mark Szeto live with you again. It was interesting to finally see some archival footage of the evolutionary band on the large screen during the (audience’s!) “respite” at interval. Another great selection for your play list even though you only know how to play a few tunes (!!) Ha! Some very intriguing solos, notably one from Jess on his curious drum. I do like his use of the triangle! “Merci” for the performance of “Cigaretta” by Eddie and his “prop”. Your singing green and gold mascot on the night was greatly appreciated and could only have sent positive energy to the other side of the world in spite of the final score! “Ole…Ole….Ole…..Ole…..Ole……Ole…..” it’s not over ‘til the fat lady sings…….!

Comments: DARLING HARBOUR JAZZ FESTIVAL – SUNDAY 11/6/06 Monsieur “Woolly Bears” Whilst the wild and windy weather of the day was enough to freeze a Brass Monkey’s proverbials, this was no deterrent as you thrilled a cold and devoted audience of very “Happy Feet” with your exciting line-up & long-life battery of on-stage energy. Such were the elements and your musical storm that the odd fedora and amplifier danced their way off stage! I do hope the amp did not belong to the band! Oops…..now where were those wheelie brakes? What a sensational 9-piece “super-group” with your throaty brass and windy [pun intended] trio of “bears” in Stuart, Eddie and Vladimir playing up front together in such inimitable style and with a sudden burst of the “Bronson Binary” [this is my newly coined musical term to be added to the next edition of the New Musical Express dictionary]!! I expect you know to what I am referring! Such a treat to see and hear so many horns! Saxes, clarinets, muted trumpet and flugel! Add to that a “Yee Haa” and a “Wah-Wah” ….. Just bring it ALL on with a …… bugle! More of that please! BRAVO!! …..ENCORE!!....... MUSICAL TREND-SETTERS!! Santiago’s guitar solo would be the best I’ve heard him play to date. Great to see him back where he belongs. Add to this the skilful and psychedelic Anatoli and Mark on “strings”…..….a little pizzicato and a 5th string to boot!! Monsieur Harris was again in fine “tarantella” voice, as were your chorus of Russian and English vocalists. So lucky we had Eddie to translate “Ma-ma Ma-ma Ma… Ma……Ma……….” for us! Your sing-a-longs with the audience were again well received with active participation from the growing crowd thanks to Yaron’s encouragement and his velvety vocal virtuosity. Such a breathless pace in “Adon Olam”. Marcello - again a pleasure to listen to him on both piano and accordion. I am such a fan of his! Emotionally moving interpretations with a hint of cheekiness. Mr Cheese …… hang on to “JC”. Looking forward to seeing more of him on stage with you. Merci for performing “Kiss of Fire” again after its short vacation. I am yet to personally master the art of tango but my Happy Feet were grateful for the opportunity to practice in space and outside the confines of my own living room! The graceful and [what appeared to be] spontaneous performance from the “swan” in the crowd captured the mood of your music as she “arabesque-d” her way with her jumps and turns clearly inspired by your musical selection and its evocative moods. Such was the mood in fact; that I was challenged into a Cossack-inspired dance from a seated position! Not so fit as to attempt the dance in it’s “purist” form and given the beautiful swan’s “competition” I was not within my comfort zone to irretrievably embarrass myself. A good tempo throughout the gig and the time spent on the sound check was well worth the early investment. Whatever your fuel, keep it pumping!

Comments: Bonjour Monsieur “Happy Feet”! What a treat with this unusual line-up! Petit Parisienne! Jacqy’s distinctive vocals transported us across continents from “a-Rajasthan” [to be spoken with head moving repeatedly from side to side] to “Gay Paris” [spoken with a sultry French accent… of course!] A little bit of Bollywood peppered with a dash of Moulin Rouge & a spoonful of “broken dreams”! How delightfully quirky! I thoroughly enjoyed Cliff’s guitar playing & his on stage facial animations! Great to have lead guitar back with you again. Caravan” (a great personal favourite) was a pleasant surprise with Stuart’s sax solo. Well done Stuart! I was quite impressed. “Odessa Bulgarish” was again a hit with the audience. Duelling accordions added unusual depth & I enjoyed the cheeky dialogue between Marcello’s piano & Eddie’s accordion! They perform so seamlessly together. Great to see Vladimir up front & “multi-tasking” for his solo. Eddie “007” has begun quite a trend! Personally, I love the big brassy, windy sound with double-trouble clarinets, saxes, flugel horn & trumpet! This is a great combo, Monsieur Happy Feet! Mark’s rhythmic bass-line & his tongue-in-cheek vocals were again superb. However, he assured me he is not auditioning for the Ten Tenors or Il Divo! Yaron, your vocals were smoothy & groovy (as usual!) and that 3-string guitar? Well, what can I say about that? You’re a true professional. Your wardrobe never ceases to astound me & you look & sound sensational on stage performing with such gusto. All in all – great great fun! “Hasta la Vista Baby……..” See you soon at the Brass Monkey! Au revoir & Merci!

Comments: Bonjour “Grand Pooh-bah L’Fromage” Well, that was quite a performance and a jolly good “cheese-up” on Saturday night! A most stunning “ensemble l’orange” during the second half Yaron – “Que caliente!” Great to see and hear the talented Marcello on piano again. I was also impressed by the addition of your percussionist, Jesse Ciampa. He appeared to be enjoying himself on stage. For some reason, I can’t get “Repent” out of my head today; perhaps it is my sub-conscious trying to speak to me!! You guys play a really good version of this. It’s a terrific song by Cohen. Loved Eddie’s “Cigaretta”. Only the second time I’ve heard it live on stage. You really have some talented vocals in your line-up. This leads me to Mark Harris’s background vocals in “That’s Amore” (Luciano has some competition!). Perhaps Mark has a future with “Il Divo”! Great to involve the audience in your sing- a-longs (and keeping the lyrics very simple for us, especially after a couple of drinkies!) Great to see Vladimir on stage with you again. Brass and wind adds fuller “volume” to your sound without the need for volume, if you understand what I mean. I have also seen him perform about a year ago with “Marsala” on one of Branka’s (salsa) cruises (would you believe!). I wonder if he remembers it - they were quite a hit. Great to start with upbeat “Choubi” but I missed “Kiss of Fire”. However, the selection was broad nevertheless. “Odessa Bulgarish” is an all-time favourite and performed well altogether. I also need to mention I like your original “Clichés” along with your new catchy “Hasta La Vista Baby” (amusing lyrics in both). It’s been a long time but I enjoyed your performance of “Dark Eyes” – I think that was in your encore. I may have been dreaming, but did I hear a riff of the “Star Wars” theme in there somewhere? Good luck to Stuart – I am confident he will do well after settling in. Bravo!

Comments: Dear “Mr Cheese” Sensational “fondue” at the Brass Monkey recently in April!! You erupted with such energy on stage-so much so my temperature rose & my fingers got burnt – so very HOT HOT HOT! Your performances have never disappointed me yet, but that gig will be hard to surpass & is to date, amongst my top favourites. What a hoot I had after a long & intense working week. Enjoyable company on the night too (thanks Yaron & Sonia)!! And for our dance Eddie in “Can I Have You Please” – always a delight! The tango is next – OK? Maybe in “The Kiss of Fire”… (”Quisas Quisas Quisas”….) I have yet to hear your band play Prince’s “Kiss” – any chance of hearing that live in the near future? I like your new “Hasta la Vista” – good luck with the recording & hopefully a commercial success for you too. See you at the Vanguard in May – I have booked a big group so I look forward to me & my party of friends enjoying your next big gig & knees up! Bonsoir Pamela “Bear” Cronulla 18/4/06

Comments: My mother, having loved your music for many a good year, threw a CD of yours in my face one morning. I was about thirteen at the time, and at first I was a little apprehensive to leave my elitist hip hop pedestal. Years later, your music is still as inspiring & pure as it was back then. The first time I saw you live I can't recall, but I do remember one of my fondest memories was in 2004 at Government House, alongside Waiting for Guinness and Mikelangelo (who changed my life forever.) In two days you will be playing at the Brass Monkey, of which I am looking forward to very much. It is comforting to see music like this still flourishing, and you brilliantly handcraft your tunes to suit everyone in some way - possessing immense skill/talent/practice in your respective instruments - but still sticking to the traditional forms of the tunes. Your concerts are always fun & cheerful & awe-inspiring. Hope to see you around for a long time to come. di xo.

Comments: Hi. Wow. I have finally found the band of my soul. My MIL, mother in law, who is a mear 85 years young booked us in to see you at Summerset College, where except for the annoying lights I enjoyed the best show of my 46yrs life. Now I am awaiting your return to this area to take my 2 daughters, son (and mil) to be educated in the love of Real music. I bought the t-shirt! Yes, a true devotee! I also have your double CD. Do you have a DVD? My son plays acoustic guitar and he needs to see your brilliance also. My MIL grew up in France, Germany, and met her husband at a dance, niether of them could speak each others language, but it was your type of music which brought them together, and for all of their marriage they went dancing every week until his leg gave way from cancer which led to his death only last year. When you asked the audience to dance in the 2nd half of the show she was on the edge of her seat looking and longing for a partner....only to sit back and sigh. At the German Club where they used to dance they were all believed to be Dance Teachers by the others who would delight in their grace, tallent and style.

Comments: Wow...I never knew there was a specific phrase to describe that lovable type of music...I always called it that "you know...that French-circus-y, Danny Elfman-type/gothic jazz with some sort of Hungarian flavour..." LOL Yeah it's just called gypsy jazz... I first heard you on "In Siberia Tonight" and thanks to you guys I have another reason to love the unique sound of Oz music...other Oz artists incl.: Guache, Inga Lil., The Forgotten Army. :)

Comments: hiya jazzy people...i have to say well done on your supremely jazzy spactular glamournesly musical brew. I, being only the young raw, age of 16...(by the by i am a girl, we can thank my friends for nicknaming me ronnie) usually naively only listen to music where the performers are so extremely amazingly good looking that one cant look and is therefore only able to listen, thus i can occasionally block some good music out, just for the record, these bands/groups generally only exist on the likes of triple j *je deteste le likes de australian idol et des chause comme le musique qui es trop commerciale* pardon my francoise. When i saw you on 'in syberia tonight' i actually listened and liked what i heard. I was studying for maths at the time and could not divert my well worth attentional eyes from my trinomial and simultaneous equations. I like jazz, but nowdays the real raw jazz of the 40's (is it?) is so difficult to come by...thank god that there is something slightly mainstram and as jazzably possible, that i can listen to and like. as usual, dancing to the beat of the dripping tap yours slightly sincerely but always cheery, Ronderful Ronnie. Ps Marcello Maio is quite the talent and as many would and have agreed, is very good looking...

Comments: BRAVO!!! Another ARIA award win & well deserved. CONGRATULATIONS to you all.... are you awake yet (or perhaps you haven't even slept after celebrating)?! (I think your new Buddah brought you Good Karma!) I really enjoyed your recent birthday bash for Leonard Cohen at The Vanguard (my 1st time there) with the added dimensions in your buffet of guests. The ladies' vocals particularly impressed me, especially the very moving "Hallelujah" with too many highlights on the night to name them all individually. Wonderful & unique individual performances equally matched when they sung together. Speaking of birthdays, I had great fun at your "Los Quatro Quesos" performance at the Cronulla Spring Fair (“Los Quatro..” since Santiago was playing at the time). Your performance was actually on my birthday – “Que suerte y muchas gracias amigos”! And.....the new flair on Anatoli’s cello is most eye-catching. I also checked out your new look website today with the some of your new photos. It’s looking good. Come back to the Brass Monkey soon for a celebratory cocktail! Perhaps Jad can create a very special one called THE ARIA!! Cheers

I am hoping that you might be so very kind as to pass on my email address to her, as we were once housemates, and in a atrocious outfit together called "punks in frocks". It has been many years and wrinkles since we last made contact, and I was hoping to revisit an old friendship. I'd be ever so grateful if it would be possile for you to pass this on through the ether. relying on the kindness of strangers Sophie

I was playing myself at other stages so I missed the rest. I bought all of your cd's that I could find although I think there is a double set that I don't have. I also wanted to ask if there are cd's available from Svetlana Bunic or if she has a website. Her playing is fantastic on the live record as is everyone's in the band. Comments: The loud and noisy band of 16 merry men & women @ “Pamela Bear’s” table, report that “a good time was had by all”!! As usual, a jolly good knees up @ the Brass Monkey on Friday 29 July! Eddie’s lyrical flute solo on “Dance Me to the End of Love” is a truly wonderful marriage with Yaron's deliciously silky vocals and it continues to remain one of my ballad favourites from your repertoire. As for those growling sax arrangements…….ooh laa laa!! FUNky is also FUN!!! I really enjoyed watching Vladimir perform with you all & am thrilled by the dueling wind and brass dialogue between him & Eddie on stage. Yaron's new lightweight Yamaha is fascinating – I have never seen a sound hole on a guitar quite that size before! "Merci" for playing oh so many of my favourites again....& some "new" ones! BRAVO to all of you - See you again soon, I hope!

Comments: As a big fan of afro - latin rhythms, jazz & gypsy swing (amongst many other styles), I was first introduced to MC by one of my brothers with whom I share this passion (the music gene is very dominant in my family!!) I am also a fan of the Algerian / Belgian film director Tony Gatlif, & the integration of his own interesting compositions, as well as the flavours of the traditional romany, manouche & moors in his wonderful stories of "Latcho Drom", "Gadjo Dilo", "Exiles" & my all time favourite to date "Swing". I have been a regular at MC gigs over the past few years at the Jazz & Shiraz Festival, Hazelhurst Art Gallery, the Brass Monkey,Cronulla & more recently at The Basement & you are some of the finest & hugely entertaining musicians I have ever seen perform (& I have seen many here & overseas!!)You are professional, great great fun & importantly value your audience. Your fluid line-up & variety of musical arrangements keeps your gigs fresh. Congratulations on your success with "Absynthe" which I play tirelessly. I have also added Live at the Basement to my collection & the double retrospective will follow. I look forward to seeing you again at Cronulla very soon, I hope. How about a DVD?

Comments: I saw you for the first time, oh, last Saturday at the Vanguard in Newtown although had heard great stuff about the band from various of my musician friends. It was a fantastic night, really entertaining and I enjoyed the funky take on some classic Jewish music! Was however highly embarassed by very drunk women on hens night getting up close and personal with the floor and Yaron!!! Ummm..... But had a brilliant night, thanks!

Comments: Hello, I am listening to the hotclub Australian Gypsy Music Program from 1999 which I am enjoying very much. I am very happy to hear that the Eastern European Gypsy/Transylvanian/Klezmer Music is alive and well here in Australia. Unfortunately I am not able to pick up your radio program as I live in Western Sydney. Thank you for keeping this tradition alive. Bela Bartok will be very pleased that the folk tradition of his region where he collected his folk music is being preserved. I wish your music group well for the future and I hope to see one of your giggs in the future. Sincerely, Christine Gleeson

Comments: I had heard of you but never seen you. BUT at Womaid I was mezmerically drawn to the stage you were playing at. Your music is essential and fab. Klezmer music is in my soul and I didn't know it. Of course bought a CD. Play it in the car all the time. thanks

Comments: I recently attended the Moonlight Food and Wine Festival in Perth Western Australia and saw Mon.Camembert. I was tranfixed with the energy and passion of all the songs that they played. The crowd was dancing and tapping along with every tune. I was taken from the first moment I heard them. When I got home I ordered their "Live on Stage" cd. I am listening to it for the first time now. As soon as I finish this entry I will be ordering their other album
