V.F. was ordered to appear before the Holy Office of the Inquisition in a hearing (not exactly a trial) on October 8, 1580 and October 13, 1580 (see Rosenthal, An Honest Courtesan, pages 168 through 177). The charges were essentially dropped as what we'd call a frivolous lawsuit.
Yes, it can be a dry slog to get through the book, but it really is worth it from a historical perspective. CSE |

| Comments: | Having just read a book based on Harriette Wilson I had to check her out. That's when I ran into your web site! WOW is all I can say. I ejoyed your site very much and look forward to you (hopefully) adding more information. I did see that movie Dangerous Beauty and enjoyed that move also. Also Wellington was not threatened by Harriette she infact wrote letters to ost of her former lovers demanding 200 pounds each to keep them out of her book. If they did not pay, like Wellington she added even more tidbits about them. |

What led me to it was a search inspired by having seen someone reading "My Blue Notebooks" during a plane trip to Minneapolis. Actually I never saw the book's title, only "Liane de Pougy" (which I memorized) and the cover photograph (the one on your site) which struck me -- what an exotic beauty she was -- and exotic of character too! But all your women are inspirations, especially to those like me who were reared "good Catholic girls." Perhaps just as Liane found God after an early life of "freedom," I shall find freedom after an early life of God. Your site did for me what a moving gospel does for church-goers! All these very intelligent women are still-living proof that true liberation is a matter of self-esteem, mind-set, and most definitely initiative, regardless of era, gender, or circumstance.
