Lizard was first given to me by my Literature teacher in high school when circumstances in my life were, how do i put this politely...unnerving and doomed.
I had no objective to live in life nor did i care about anything, but her books not only helped me to see the world in a new and much more profound way, but rekindled hope and beauty in my life.
If it werent for the stories of Yoshimoto that ive read, i can only imagine the paths i might have taken.

Cheerz to the site manager...Best Yoshimoto site there is!

Its truly a great thing when you see that Literature can bring people from all over the world together!
Peace & Majick to you all!

I was living in Davenport, Ia, among the homeless. I was suffering from trauma related to a severe concussion and attacks on my loved one by a brutal gang incited by persons to whom Yoshimoto is sympathetic, but I tried not to think about that. I was unable to think of anything, but raw physical agony, so powerful it drove my psyche beyond its limits. I could read nothing. Somehow, I got my hands on a Yoshimoto book, and gradually began to calm down, to wrap my mind around something other than pain. She has talent, but I cannot bring myself to really enter her work thoughtfully, due to unresolved social issues that stand, possibly permanently, between us. It's not everyday you are asked to appreciate someone who you believe may have condoned homocidal acts of torture.

Want to know what I'm on about? Today, I'm on about how "HELIX" in LIZARD is so good; how it brings a perky tear right up into your eye, even though you've read it half a dozen times before. Ain't it the truth? I'll say. That's how come I am just on and on about it again today, like a crazy man. Want to see my watch? Ain't that wierd? Where I come from wierd is a euphemism for pretty good.

Banana Yoshimoto is a great writer, but nothing can
possibly excuse the torture of a living witness of crime,
because he was a juvenile, through tailored perceptions
written by Yoshimoto on behalf of Tedesco and Wen. She is
an accomplice in an incredible crime ring, one of the
beastial mass undertaking of artists in history, and
utterly criminal.

N.P. again and still I feel the same magic as the first
time. It is a shame that only these two books are in
Spanish. Anyway I have to read the others in English.

Hi, thank you for this great site.
In Germany we have the following books now:
- Kitchen (including Moonlight Shadow)
- N.P.
- Tsugumi
- Dornröschenschlaf (I think it's English title is:
Deep Sleep)
- Amrita
I'm currently reading Amrita and I feel kind of bewitched by
this book, I can't stop reading it and every few pages I go
back and re-read some passages again and again because I
love the way Banana Yoshimoto describes the events, memories
and heartstrings.

Hi, My name's Ursula, I'm trying to fin some information
about a movie based on Kitchen. The way I first and ever
heard about it was through my edition of Kitchen, which has
the same cover as the German edition, and on the inside it
says "photo of the actress of the film Kitchen", but it
doesn't have any information on the director or anything
else.

I was browsing for like the eleventh time trying to find
it, and I found your page. I was wondering if you've got
any information on it, if you've seen it or know where I
could find it. I'm really really interested in how the
novel was "transported" into cinema, wether or not that
soothing and "wisdomful" feeling remains, ('cause I could
say it is judging by the photo), and also if it's a
Japanese production

Thanks for your time and for the info on your page, I hope
you know something about the film, it would mean a lot to
me if you could share it with me. Thanks again

through this web. ^__^

I'm a Thai writer who translates Kitchen into

I'm going to visit Japan during May 31-June
9, 2001. So, I'm just taking my chance to
contact Banana Yoshimoto.

I'll bring Kitchen (Thai version) with me on
the trip just in case I run into Banana. ^__*

I'll be in Tokyo on May 31-June 3 then I'll
move to Takayama. If there is anyone who
knows how I can reach Banana. Please let
me know through my email address.

It would be very honoured to meet or talk or

I found a copy of Kitchen in my university library at a
very significant time of my life. I was doing my finals in
English at Cambridge and was totally bogged down by a lot
of old dusty boring literature. Banana was like a breath
of fresh air. I didn't know what to do with my life but I
got the idea I wanted to go to Japan. A year later I was
there teaching English in a tiny remote farming town in
southern Kyushu - extraordinary experience. I often
thought of Banana when I was there and now all I need to do
to spark off all the memories of that time is read a page
of her books again. I've read all the ones that have been
translated into English and wait eagerly for the next one.

Now, I'd like to tell my last experience: I went to a
japanese restaurant and...how could I not order "tempura"
and "sashimi" after having read about them in her novels?
While I was there ,I felt her novels yet more real if it's
possible. I felt like being in one of her short novels, the
atmosphere was the same...well,you just have to
try...Kisses,Serena

Aside from loving Asleep and reading it straight through, I
found none of the mysticism or spirit of the original prose
in her works before. The translation was turgid, and seemed
adapted for the male readers who might wish to place Banana
in the field of higher letters, rather than popular fiction.
It failed me, in the sense that it seemed an attempt by a
reknowned writer to make good on her reputation by not
bothering. I would have rather seen her fall flat on her
face than read this attempt to guard her position.

I believe that most of people who have read any Yoshimoto's
writing have been touched with some kind of magic. That's
what i feel everytime I go back and read something form her
and I know i'll feel fine, complete. I have read in spanish
Kitchen, and Lizard and Amrita in English, the language is
not as important as the warmth of her stories. There are
two more writers that share this magical touch, Sandra
Cisneros (chicana writer) and Susanna Tamaro (Italy).
Yoshimoto, Tamaro and Cisneros have found a way to say
those things we all feel at a point of our lives.

Really I wanted to find a site where I could express my
appreciation and the warmth that Miss Yoshimoto has helped
to concoct and usher into different areas of my soul. As a
typical admirer I imagine I feel very unique in my love and
sense of connection with Miss Yoshimoto and her characters
and the lives they encounter. Her vision and courage to
speak the words that so many crave is exemplary and
mundane...just as in her creations, the mundane becomes
magical. Im not one to flock after others or follow a
crowd...but in meeting Miss Yoshomoto through her
characters...indeed in being reconnected to a greater part
of humanity through them...I find myself an intoxicated
unadulterated fan. Thank you Banana. Thank you.

you can just feel that seabreeze floating, it's you, you
just understand it....Forgive me for my poor explanations,
I'm not much of a writer (especially not in English!) all I
want to say is that her books are lightcoloured without
getting too highintheskywithoutareason...Anyway, I love her
books...all of them!!

Oh, it's just a shame that I don't have so much money for
the moment, I saw her latest one in Brussels yesterday, and
it was just too much for what I had with me.Seems like I'll
have to wait till I get paid in a couple of weeks....

Although her stories are sad when you finish one you fill

Hi Hi! I agree there is an insufficient amount of
information about Yoshimoto on the web. I'm very grateful
that you put effort into building this site. Before
discovering Yoshimoto, I used to avoid reading. But (maybe
because it's a translation) I found her stories really
candid and fresh. From then, I have been start reading her
books. Unfortunately, I haven't finish all her books yet.

I read the only two books I found in hebrew, The Kitchen,
and Lazard. While reading, with no stops, I hoped the books
would never come.
There are mistic ideas in her writing (maybe it came from
jappanes culture ?), but it is still very modern and
simple - clear.
I feel she is someone I would like to know.

I have read Kitchen as a requirement for our literature
class in college.
I was surprised that I was able to relate to Ms.
Yoshimoto's writing that I also bought her other available
book NP, which turned out to be my favorite.
It is true, that when you read a book again and again you
begin to feel the way the author does, and begin to think
the way she thinks...

like you, my life was deeply touched by ms. yoshimoto. her
books (i've read three, kitchen, np and lizard, amrita is
not yet available in manila, at least that was what
bookstores told me) made me appreciate my life better. i am
now more observant and insightful of my many seemingly
insignificant experiences. thanks for coming up with a page

I was really surprised when I found this site and read the
guest book. I like the stories written by Banana Yoshimoto
of course, but I didn't know the fact that her books had
been being loved around the world. I think it's a certain
thing that Banana becomes internationally well-known writer
because she is able to write so great stories that many
people who have read her works love them. Much more her
works should be translated into much more languages, and
much more people should have much more opportunities to
touch her world!!!!

I have just read the latest entry on the guestbook and was
so excited to see a message from Yoshimoto Banana herself!
I saw an interview with you on NHK Kyoiku TV in February
about education in Japan and could see what a special
person you are. Banana-san - dondon subarashii hon wo kaite
itadakitai to omoimasu. Ganbatte kudasai!
I've just finished reading "Hard Boiled/ Hard Luck"
(published last year) - as always, the imagery was
beautiful and the sentences so lucid and profound.I'm about
to start Banana's latest release in Japan, "Furin to
Nanbei". I feel sorry for those of you who can't buy the
hard-cover editions of her books in Japan because the
drawings which accompany the stories (especially
in "Honeymoon" and her latest) are wonderful too. Banana's
books are like holding a treasure in your hand.

One cold January day, I started reading a novel by a
Japanese author, Banana Yoshimoto. From that day, new
horizons opened before me... Whenever I feel alone, I
think about Tsugumi, her world which seems to be veiled by
the finest of silks... I read 'Kitchen', 'Moonlight
Shadow', 'Tsugumi', 'Lizard', 'Amrita' and 'L'ultima amante
di Hachiko'. If you wish to share your feelings about
Banana Yoshimoto's works, please write, I'm very willing to
share opinions. I also love japanese culture and japanese

I am a fan of the literature; Classicals, Actual and all
kind of books have been walked by my two lonely eyes. My
memory can't forget such authors as Don Miguel de
Cervantes, Homero, Horacio de Quiroga, Octavio Paz, Dante,
Emilio Salgari, Jules Verne, Maximo Gorki, León Tolstoi,
Edgar Allan Poe, Kafka, Edmundo Amicis, Alexander Dumas,
Dostoyeski... the list would be great; great considering
the authors and great considering extension. But... there's
an author that keeps with my most beloved ones... her name
is Banana Yoshimoto. Her writing captivated my heart as few
could; I love her way to express such feelings... she is a
genius... in my deepest wishes you can find an axienty to
write her... maybe via mail or ICQ... or whatever... just
writing her would be a pleasure for me.

woke me up.
I did spread the book - all of my friends have one, I

the book is about I can trust one.
I gave it to one very special person. It was something I
needed to do.
And now, again in despair, I read Kitchen, N.P.,

Hey! Am I the first Japanese to sign in to this guestbook?
I'm so thanksful to this web page (I must say, as an
indevisual and as one of Japanese fun of Banana Yoshimoto).
But, to tell the truth, I only became a fun of Yoshimoto

Shinkon-san, and Tsugumi.
I really do thank to this page, but at the same time, I
feel very sorry to American readers, who can't read
Tsugumi. I love this one of Yoshimoto's work. The
character "Tsugumi" is so lovely. I even wanted to give

interesting. Plus, I'm interested in Japanese culture.
This book grabbed me like few other books ever have. I've
been looking ever since for new works by BY.
