Comments:Enjoyed the site very much. My greatgrandfather was private Robert Wilson Cope, Company F., 1st NC Cavalry. He was a Cabarrus Ranger who was wounded during the third cavalry charge at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. After a 30 day furlough, he rejoined the outfit and continued with them up until just before the surrender at Appomattox Court House.

Let us always remember the magnificent men of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry, the finest cavalry known as "Stuart's Tarheels." They rode in glory from beginning to the end.

Comments:Congratulations on the well presented site and the recent
award!

People from Maine have much in common with those of our
sister States in the south. Pride in our State runs deep as
does a very long tradition of independence and loyalty. If
today was 1861 and the war was to be refought, no doubt I'd
be in a blue uniform.

Today is not 1861, thank the Lord. The Civil War was a
tragedy on a scale very few of us can comprehend. The human
suffering and overwhelming loss would be a terrible thing
to endure. However, I have the greatest respect for those
who did live in that time and gave all that they had for
their cause, north or south. The thought of leaving my wife
and children with a musket on my shoulder or sword on my
belt to go off and fight is heartbreaking. But that is
exactly what millions of Americans did in 1861 and have
done a number of times since then. The sacrifice and
courage of those men and women is what I think about as I
walk over a battlefield and is what I see when I look at
the flags those men carried into battle.

The flags of the south are no more of a symbol of slavery
or hatred than the US flag with 35(?) stars or the banner
of a regiment from Maine.

That's one humble yankee's opinion.

Once again - congratulations and here's to your continued
happiness & success.

Your friend,

Scott Settlemire

Confederate history. As one who calls North Carolina my
home (though I am not a native of the state), I was
particularly fascinated with the Zebulon Vance quotes. I'm
in Hendersonville, and the French Broad River is a mere 3
miles away from my house. I was very much amused by Vance's
comments in regard to dredging the river that he could piss
across the entire state of Rhode Island. This is an
excellent page. Please come by and visit my page sometime,
and sign my guestbook. I very much agree with Vance's
comments that North Carolina stands as one of the shining
states of the Confederacy for its contribution to the War.
We sent and lost more troops than any other state. God
Bless North Carolina, and God Bless the Confederate States
of America!
