I wish I could've been as relaxed with the 1st as I am with the 4th and learned to just sit back and enjoy the simple and insane things they do way earlier in mommyhood. My sister is having trouble with her 2 yr old and a few of your articles are sure to be helpful to her!! I am so excited to share them!! Thankyou soo much! |

| Comments: | I just read your article about what a 4 year old should know. As you mentioned I got answers such as counting to 100 and writing their first and last name perfectly. I was feeling down and blue and even considered the possibility of my child having a learning disability. As i kept reading it i began to cry. We forget how important it is to let our kids be kids. Today everything is so competative and kids are learning 3 languages, and learning how to read before kindergarden. You reminded me of the really important things about parenting, such as the time spent with your chilld and the importance of reading to them. You are an inspiration. Thank you so much for your article. |

Thank you for your smiles and inspiration :) |

| Comments: | Hi, I came across your page while googling for homeschool acitivities for my just turned 4 year old son. Every friend of mine has his/her child in preschool. Unfortunately my husband lost his job and extra money on this is not possible right now. However, I am seeing this as a blessing because I am turning to homeschool ways and I feel like I am slowing down for a lack of better words and paying more attention to my child everyday. I printed out your page on what a 4 year old should know because it almost made me cry. I plan on keeping this with me everyday and look at it when I feel like he is missing out not being in school. Thank you for re-directing me. |

| Comments: | I signed your guest book in February 08 and am back again! When I last signed your book, my daughter was 3 1/2 mo. old.. Karlie is now a happy and healthy 14 months and it's partly due to your site. You have given me so many ideas for keeping my little one happy and participating in a way that allows her to feel important! She just loves popsicles and "coloring" in the tub :) And yes, I have caught myself hollering "There's a polecat on my back!!" a number of times over the past year too! LOL Anyway, thank you thank you thank you for such a lovely site! I come back again and again, and each time I'm inspired to be a better mother, a better parent, a better friend to my little girl. Your insight and wisdom have enabled me to make memories with her that she'll remember forever :) |

| Comments: | Hi,
I just have to say that this is a wonderful website. I came across it by searching the web with "What my 4-year old should know." My son is "developmentally-delayed" and what you wrote in your article was so true. It often hurts when other parents can list millions of things that their kids can do, but they do not stop to realize some of the most important things in this world...that our kids know they are loved, how to enjoy nature and the beautiful world around us, be happy, and so much more. I just read a bunch of your articles, and they are so down to earth an true. I particularily loved "taming the tornado". Its nice to take a step back and realize what is important in life. It feels as though my busy days and schedule have taken over, then the kids (which are 2 and 4) just seem to be on a crazy tear, and everything is stressful. When really, they may be at the time, but I think that it is usually me who is having the problem and my kids are just doing what kids do. But thanks again, I'm spreading the word, and hope to be back to your page quite often!! |

| Comments: | I found your site while doing some research for a casual comic project I'm beginning. What I was looking for was ideas about the world a child inhabits and their relationships with their parents or parent. Thank you for your efforts and your time, and your loving, loving outlook. Your articles are affectionate without being saccharine and sincere without being preachy. For a woman who has survived as much as your biography suggest you have, you have emerged as a triumph. Your children are lucky to have such a reflective, funny and dedicated mother, and I'm sure you know how lucky you are to have them. Thanks! |

Looking for the best free online educational ebooks, then onto Preschool homeschooling, I stumbled upon your most generous website which immediately captured my interest since it's about A Magical Childhood...a half-reality childhood dream of mine which I've been trying my best to give our four precious children, a boy and three girls, 10,9 8, and 4 yrs old. Thank you for sharing your journal with us, with lots of helpful and inspiring insights I wish to incorporate, too, in our daily life. May God bless you, too, always. |

| Comments: | I just read I Promise: An Open Letter to my Baby
February 16, 2001 and am in tears. After several days of being exasperated with my 3 1/2 mo. old daughter being on a crying jag due to teething, this was exactly what I needed to put things in perspective. You've inspired me to write a letter of my own and post it on the refrigerator where I can read it every time I get in a funk. THANK YOU for making me remember how little she is right now and how much she needs me to be her comfort zone and warrior. THANK YOU for your magical insight which has inspired me today to be more understanding with a pair of fresh eyes! |

| Comments: | Hi! I came upon your site as I was searching for information on whether you should teach four and five year olds to write the alphabet. I am a preschool teacher and part of the curriculum that all of the teachers use is the weekly practice of letter worksheets on which the children trace and attempt to write the letters themselves. Maybe three children out of twelve have the fine motor skills to do this and the other nine just struggle and scribble. My heart kept telling me that they are too young to be pushing such a skill, but it was what all the other teachers do. I found your article about what a four year old should know and I was almost in tears. I'm going to share it with all of the parents in my class. This is how I feel I should teach the little ones in my class. Lots of love, compassion, tons of reading (which we already do) and just enjoying childhood and the many experiences it brings. Thank you for your words of wisdom that have inspired a rookie teacher to go against the norm and follow her heart! I also want to thank you for your great articles about spending time with your children. It has been a rough night around our house and I lost my temper and yelled at my three precious ones who are 13, 10 and 6. I was reading where you said to shout out random crazy things like "I have a moneky on my head!" Well, I did this to my six year old and told him I had a pole cat on my back and that ever so often it would climb up onto my head and make me yell when I really didn't mean to. He thought it was hilarious and checked down the back of my shirt to see if he could find it. I apologized to all three of them and felt a tremendous sense of relief. Thank you for sharing your life! |

My mother in law always asked my husband, 'what new word did they learn this week?' - I always replied 'they are happy!' My mom would never ask what new word, she would always ask ' how are they?'.............. What different lives they live..... what different childhood's we had. I always tell people I am am my mothers child.....she has more friends than anyone I know and I inspire to be so lucky. Children need to be aloud to be just that......swim in lakes, stay up late and sleep late, enjoy learning though fun and BE HAPPY. |

| Comments: | My only child is Victoria Rose; 14 months old. I hope we can have more but at 42 we have already been so lucky!! Victoria wakes 4/5 times a night for breastfeeding so I'm tired and always ill with whatever bug is going around. But Victoria is beautiful, happy, healthy. I loved your poem to Victoria at 1 and a half - it could have been written for me! Someone said to me "Babies are Miracles!" Oh how they are! Victoria's bow legged toddle; her percussion on my pots and pans; her decorative ideas about self feeding; her mussed baby hair; her laughter..... I used to write poetry decades ago - I think my baby might inspire me to wax lyrical once more!! |
