| Comments: | I was a very good friend of Lyman Trachsler, "Doc Lolli" who was in Viet Nam in 1966, not sure about his total service dates. I know he was at at Cam Lo. I have an email he asked me to forward to a mutual friend in 2002 that states, "Jack, I ran across this on the net. I was there. This is an account of what we did in Nam. I was with the 4th Marines and it describes the battle at Cam Lo and also the time we were ambushed and I got my "Star". Just thought you might want to read about it. Lt. Galvin was our commanding officer as was Jack (Black Jack) Westerman (The Grey Ghost). Cam Lo was where I first got hit and the ambush in the valley is where I tried to save a some Marines...long time ago. Hard to read about it as my memory is not as good as the report." The report is "The DMZ War Continues, Operation Prairie, Reconnasissance in Force, 3 August -13 Sept 1966, Assault from the Sea." Unfortunately Lyman passed away in March 2008. He had a silver star from this time & if anyone knows any details about how he received it I would love to hear from them as I would pass the information on to his wife, Betty. Lyman was a great human being and is deeply missed by all of his family and friends. He had diabetes, heart disease & kidney disease that were determined to be from being exposed to Agent Orange in Viet Nam. |

| Comments: | I enlisted in the Marines in March of '1967. On October 21.1967 I entered the Republic of Vietnam at DaNang air base. From there I was transported to Camp Evens near Phu Bai to be attached with my unit 1st Bn 4th Marines, Delta Co, 3rd platoon weapons. My MOS was M-60 machine guns. The Bn at the time was in the Ashau Valley, so I was kept in the rear for indocrination before flown by helo into field one week later. In November our Regimental Headquarters went North to Dong Ha while the 4th Marine fighting units pulled operations along the DMZ. My tour of duty ended June 6.1968 while on a small ridge high up on the mountains near the laotian border southwest of Khe Sahn called LZ Loon. I received a serious wound to my head and eventually medivaced to the hospital ship USS Sanctuary off the Soth China Sea. I never heared from anyone again due to the fact I could not write because of my head wounds and my men didn't know where I went. It was 20 years before I finally heard from someone because of my name on the Vietnam wall internet information line.
Not a day goes by I don't think of these men I spent such hardships and horror with and the last hours of terrible trauma. I can't thank them enough. I thank the Marine that carried me to the helo, and the door gunner that held me from falling out the side of the helo while firing at the same time as we lifted away. These thoughts are branded in my mind forever with the idea of never willing to forget. I miss and respect them all. Semper Fi my Marines. Mike |

| Comments: | I wanted to return to the Dreambook to say thanks.
From the time I joined the Marine Corps in 1965 and got out in 1969 I have not seen or heard from anybody that I served with...that is until I signed this book. A fellow Marine named Paul Wosney that was actually in my mortar section in Nam from 67 to 68 replied to my post and we have been in contact weekly every since. I was totally blown away and elated when I got his E-Mail but the saddest part of this is that until he saw my name in the Dreambook he had'nt talked or located anyone either. Once again I say thanks for putting this page together and providing a way for guys like us to reunite. |

| Comments: | Hello: I left Camp Margarita in 1965 via the USS Mitchell. I was in the H&S Company, 81mm Mortars Platoon. We landed in Chu Lai and were by MAG 12, and provided illumination and support for B Med. I was just a kid then, some of the guys I remember, St. Tuilafano(Samoan)Sgt.Ortiz(Pueto Rican)Corporal Ray Hernandez, From Corpus Cristy,Tex. Lawrence Cannon, Humphrey, and many others that I cannot remember their names. Corporal Huddleston, Private Hall, TC Carter. We used to rotate to the tip where we had a base, and there was an island called "Snagletooth". We walked the I CORP from Danang al the way to Cam lo, the rock pile and other places. We were on the Rockpile on Sept.1966. During Operation Praire, I received a Navy Commendation Medal, foolish kid playing heroe.I remember that when we got back to the States, we went back to Camp Margarita. I remember that when we got back, all of the platoon were NCO's. I was transfer to 3/26 and went back to Nam. When i came back, we landed in the back of MCRD and the next day we had to parade in San Diego, the hippies threw rotten eggs at us. Funny, the next day I was taken to Camp Margarita and I walked in one door of the squad bay, by the NCO club, I went out the other a civilian. I walked out and have never looked back. Almost forty years later, Ifinally realized that I am suffering from PTSD and Diabetes II from Agent Orange.I'm trying to find some of the guys, and I'm having a heck of a time. The VA, wants me to get statements from my unit friends to verify their shit. If there are any of you outthere, how about making contact. I could use your help,.That kid got old, and now I'm having as always my dreams and nightmares.
Ive never talk to anyone about my time and experiences in the Nam, for me, they would not understand. Monday I go to see a psychiatrist, I;m afraid I'll grab him by the throat if he pushes my buttons. How about a hand, guys. I see your faces every night, but I cannot remember the names. God Bless you all..Semper Fi.. |

| Comments: | It's been a wild day. An old friend and marine from Ca. told me he saw my name mentioned in the guest book of the 1/9 (walking dead) site. Got a copy of the e-mail from their guest book and then looked around and found this great site!
I wemt thru PI in Jan 65, IRT and then to M 3/5 at Pendelton. We went by ship to OKI -Camp Hansen- as 2/3 and went thru some "special raider training". Headed to Nam as 2/3 and shortly after arriving at Da Nang we were sent ot Chu Lai to become Charlie Co 1/4. While in Da Nang we lost several guys in a freak LVT sinking including our PLt Sgt Moses Tabor. From Chu Lai we kept moving North and wound up outside of Hue/Phu Bai in deep do do. I was wounded on May 20 '66 and spent just about a year in St Albans Naval Hosp on Long Island. It's been a long ride with a lot of ups and downs but serving with the guys of 1/4 was definitely one of the ups. I'm now living outside of Chicago (Algonquin) am retired and believe it or not a MR. MOM -- I'm 61 and have two kids - a girl 10 and a boy 7, and needless to say a lovely younger wife - another bunch of ups. Anybody see and familiar service dates or places I would love to hear from you. GREAT SITE. |

| Comments: | Following boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. on May 1947, I was assigned to A Co., 4th Marine Regiment at Camp Jejune, as a Browning Automatic (BAR) in the 3rd platoon.
Our Company Commander had been a WWII Marine Raider, who believed in tough training, with 20 mile marches, field and several night problems monthly. The Sgt 1st/sgt. was a WWII combat veteran & our Gy/Sgt and Platoon S/Sgt had been in the 4th Marines, POWs at the fall of Corrugators. In January 1948 we sailed to the island of Vieques Puerto Rico for training, I spent my 18th birthday there. In March 1948 and I was promoted to Corporal. August 1948, A Company flew from Cherry Point, N.C. to Quonset Point, Rhode Island and boarded the USS LITTLE ROCK (CLG-4) for a Mediterranean Cruise. We put into the ports of Gibraltar, Sicily, and Rhodes, Greece for liberty. On our departure from Rhodes, our 3rd platoon received orders to pack our 782 gear, weapons, and sea bags because we were going on "special, detached, dangerous duty". Due to the danger of this assignment, they gave platoon members the option of not going, but it was up to the Marine not wanting to go to get a replacement. Several short-timers did this, by exchanging places with our platoon Marines on mess duty. The destroyer USS McKenzie came along side and we boarded her for an overnight trip to Haifa, Israel. We dis-embarked and loaded our gear onto UN trucks, hiding our weapons, by putting them on top of the cases of ammunition, C rations and grenades. We covered them with our packs and sea bags and we sat on top. Due to, the assassination of UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte, the killing of Consul General Thomas Wasson, the shooting at the consul and vice-consul, the wounding of a consular guard and Naval radioman, and the kidnapping of the Consulate Chief Code clerk and the report from A US Army Maj. Who overheard, that Consul General John MacDonald would be killed next, set the gears in motion for Consul General John Mac Donald, to request the U.S. State Department for more Marines We relieved a small contingent of 13 Marines, taking up our duties as Consulate Security and body guarding any Consulate staff members who left the compound on Official business. In addition, we guarded the U.S. Navy Radio Station, located in the Convent next to the Consulate and the YMCA where we and UN personnel were billeted. The first night in the YMCA we were awakened by machine gun fire from outside our window. Having been told that this was a neutral zone, we were puzzled. Then we heard a truck grind gears and drive away, followed by incoming mortar shells landing nearby. A few days later I asked a Haganah soldier about the machine gun and he said " Oh! We only have one machine gun that we drive around at night shooting it from various places, to make the Arabs think we have many." I asked him about shooting from our neutral area and he said I must be mistaken because it was in the dark. The rooms in the YMCA were nice, at 3 pounds a day with meals. The food was sparse, so we filled up on a sort of pita bread, cocoa, and tea at all our meals. Because the city water pipes had been blown up, the water was trucked into Jerusalem each night, so we had no showers. We would put a flat iron into the sink and run the water so it came up to just below where the top of the iron joined the bottom and then plugged it into a wall socket. This warmed the water allowing us to take a "sailors bath" and shave. Later we bought a coffeepot to heat the water. The nuns at the Convent did our laundry for a minimal cost, as well as any embroidery we wanted on our clothing. We were under daily sniper, machine gun, mortar and rocket fire, but were fortunate to have only one casualty during our tour. One evening, while standing duty on the main gate, I saw a rocket round swish through the air and hit the open lighted window of the Navy radio shack located in the Convent next door. The Navy radioman on duty had stepped out of the room a minute before or he would have been badly injured or killed. During his busy schedule he had failed to close the window shutters after it got dark, making the lighted room a perfect target for whoever fired the rocket. One day while playing football in a soccer field which was surrounded by corrugated metal fence about eight feet high, a sniper from the old city was shooting over our heads and we thought he was shooting at the football going through the air. Later the sniper shot an elderly man who was walking near the field. In January 1949, Marine Embassy Guards relieved us. They had numerous uniforms and Dress Blues. They were surprised when we told them that there wasn't any clothing cleaning in Jerusalem. On my last day of duty, I was relieved by a SSGT on the Main Gate, who was wearing Dress Blues and white gloves. We left all of our 782 gear and weapons at the Consulate and returned to the United States via the Destroyer USS GAINARD, from Haifa to Cypress, a Navy plane to Malta and then to a Naval Air Base in Casablanca. We waited there for a week for passage back home by ship and plane. We arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and stayed at the Marine Barracks for the night. We then left by bus to Camp LeJeune, N.C. I was transferred to B Co., 4th Marines, drew new 782 gear and a rifle and we sailed off with the 2nd Marine Division for maneuvers on Vieques,P.R. a few days later. We changed our colors and became the 6th Marines under Col Homer Litzenberg. I was discharged in February 1950. and recalled to duty in July 1950 for the Korean War, In September 1950, many of the members of the platoon that served at the Consulate in Jerusalem, made the landing at Inchon and fought their way out of the trap at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. For the second time they became the "Chosin Few". William D. Furey -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Comments: | Got to B 1/4 3d Mar Div in early '70. Served for a while with Pat Grove who is signed in down below. Hell ofa guy, and talked with him for the first time in over 30 years. Would like to hear from anyone who served during that era. Anyone know what happened to 1st Sgt. Clyde Ash. Good luck |

| Comments: | Landed in Chu Lai in May 65' with "C" Co, 1/4. Was Corpsman. Never had done anything worth a damn up to then, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Can't remember it all- ongoing loss of memory segments. Rotated back, got out and attached to USMC reserve in Milwaukee for service obligation remainder. Got married in 67, wanted to go back in but she raised hell, so put other 16 years in Air Force. Retired MSgt.
I regret not going back in Navy and asking for FMF (and specifically RVN). I guess life is full of regrets, but I really feel like I let the finest group of men I ever served with down. I can't remember names and stuff, did we have a commander killed when he walked off some cliffs in the middle of the night? If you remember me, or anyone from C/1/4, 65-66, how about dropping me a line? Semper Fi. |
