I am so glad that there is an Izayoi website as wonderful and beautiful as yours. Despite her few appearances and lack of background, Izayoi has always been one of my favorite characters in the Inuyasha series. It makes me very happy to see an online shrine dedicated to her.

I love Kohaku. He's such a good boy. (He thanks Kagome for saving his life when she did it instinctively, is willing to give up his life to help go towards the destroy Naraku cause...) I tend to favor characters in story’s that don't have much to fight with but try to do what they can to help. Of course they also have to have good personality. ^.^

Hello, I am amazed at the knowledge that you possess about Izayoi-sama. I also am impressed that you even look at doujen. I myself adore to read, (and sometimes I draw), Izayoi and InuYasha fanfictions. We share a lot of curiousities, and I would like to now show you a small one shot story that I created not to long ago...it is one of pain, and of sadness...I would rather remain anonymous than to reveal my identity...I admit, I am a very solitary person...

WARNING: I made my friends cry.

Oh, and if you truly like it, could you please try to post it on your site? If it's not too much to ask...

Do you ever get that feeling after you dream that you've forgotten something of great importance? The frustration that you feel when you can't remember what it is? You know that something is bound to happen. ANYTHING is bound to happen if you are so sure about this feeling. And I had a feeling that this feeling was somehow life threatening. I don't know what is so life threatening about it, but I DID say that ANYTHING could happen. And five years of a miserable childhood told me that it would probably be for the worse… I can just feel it.
The feeling that you get in your stomach, that 'ill-at-ease' kind of feeling… It had almost always been around, but now, it was scaring me. I had always had flashbacks from the past. But this was different. I slowly rose from my futon to wake up my mother. I walked those long hallways that separated her room from mine. I looked at the portraits that she had drawn. One of them, the smallest one, was my favorite. It is a picture of her embracing me, smiling her soft smile. I passed a few more rooms, and went inside. I slowly opened the sliding door so that it would hopefully silent. It wasn't. It made a creak that humans would think inaudible, but when you have REALLY strong senses, it is almost ear shattering. I covered my ears from the annoying noise that echoed in my mind. I shook my head to relieve my ears of the annoying sound by replacing them with the even louder noise of my hair moving around. Of course, humans also could not really hear that either. Soon, the sound exited my system, and I was free of the annoying echo. Glad that it had stopped resonating at last, I tiptoed over to my mother's bed. Usually, watching her while she slept, listening to her breath would steal away the bad thoughts. Not this time. I suddenly did not want to disturb her because she was sleeping so soundly. Her eyes were shut peacefully, and her mouth was forming a smile. What was she dreaming about? I wonder… Whatever it happened to be, by the smile she wore, I could tell that it wasn’t anything stressful. I looked at her face for a long time. Then, I turned and left the room. The door was annoying again, so I ran this time. If mommy was sleeping, all I had left to do was sit and wait for a miracle to get rid of these thoughts. Maybe the discord hassling my thoughts was would dredge itself up… hopefully… I climbed into bed when I got to my room, and after wondering a bit more about what it was that I forgot, I fell asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day…
I was always alone. Even since birth, I was always alone. I had been alone in my dead mother's arms, still connected to her umbilical cord. If it weren't for my dad, I would probably STILL be what I would always be, even if I was in a room full of people. If he didn't get his healing weapon out, and revived my mother, I would be TRULY alone until my dying day. Alone…I stood in the courtyard, playing with the golden ball that had been presented to me by my mother. Bouncing it childishly around, all alone. Just like I supposedly should be. Segregated from everyone else like a leper. But I know one thing that is probably different about a leper and me. A leper was in company, whether it was by fellow lepers or village healers. I was alone, stripped of all similarities that I shared with other people. They all ignored me completely. I watched the sun set on the day, kissing the rooftops and draping them with its dark cloak. I waited for the moment that I always longed for in my lonely day. A true beacon shone on the darkness of my life when that time came. The arrival of my mother. Her sweet fragrance filled the area. My oddly strong sense of smell made me feel free of the dark and lonely corridors of my heart when the unexplainable gentle scent that emanated from her body reached it. It was almost like a mix of cherry blossoms and sweet fresh roses. Her eyes were luminous even though they were one of the darkest shades of black. Her long ebony hair went all the way down to her waist. She didn't bother to put it in a bun, or to cut it shorter, she just let it drape on the flowery pattern of her kimono like a curtain over a window. Her soft face brought a feeling to my chest that ached horribly from all the joy that she took out for me. She smiled and summoned me. "Come, dear. You know about the party that is to begin soon. Please come in." I looked inside. Many people had entered already. None of them liked me. I could recognize them all, and if not twice, none of these people had not taunted me. "M-mother…I-I don’t want to go in there…" I backed away. "As long as I'm there, no one will harm you." My mother reassured me. I looked up at her, her beautiful face, which I always trusted. "Okay…" I went inside, trying my best to hide myself behind my mother's kimono. It didn't work. This nobleman that I didn't really know stopped to give one of my ears a sharp, painful tug with an empty smile of detest as he went past. Jeez! Why did he have to do that? I glared up at him, bringing a hand up to rub the stinging spot on my poor ear. He was not making me happy, and he knew it. My mother was busy talking with another person, so she did not really notice. I looked in hatred at the stupid nobleman. I'd give ANYTHING to see him get thrown out. I wished that I were outside again. I decided that the best way to keep people from staring at me was to be silent. My mother was trying to change the subject when it turned to me. "Izayoi-chan, I pity you for having such an…ODD child…" "You know, Izayoi-sama, he IS rather different…" "He must ALWAYS be alone." Odd. Alone. Different. What am I? Not human, but not a total demon either. Can a thing like me be half? Can ANYTHING be half? I didn't fit into any category. The time came to eat. I tried to sit as close to my mother as possible. I luckily got the third seat away from her. And the BEST part of it all was that who should be sitting next to me on my left but the nobleman that pulled my ear earlier. Oh joy.
The party was supposed to be for the sixth anniversary of the death day of my father. But I was hearing more conversation about me that my father…
"Poor Izayoi! Your son is more dog than human!" One lady told my mother. My ears twitched as I heard this "compliment"…The stupid nobleman decided to join the conversation, and said, "Oh I also do feel sorry about your child. He really IS a dear. He would also be an asset to finding things around the house with that nose of his." He turned to me, and when mother wasn't looking, he said, "Fetch, doggie!", and threw a chopstick across the room. A few people saw this, and laughed. I wanted to rip out this guy's topknot. He was annoying me. "He is almost as human as your son!" Mother told the woman who said that I was more dog than human. "And I love my son more than you can imagine. He is not a household appliance, Fukumata-sama." She said to the nobleman. Fukumata? What kind of name is that? I looked down at my food and began to eat the soba noodles. I delicately used my chopsticks just like my mother taught me. "What kind of dog eats with chopsticks?" The nobleman whispered to the man next to him loud enough for me to hear. The two of them chuckled. I furrowed my eyebrows and continued to eat with my chopsticks. That stupid Fukumata guy acted as if I only had a demon side. If he could see that, why could he not see my human side too? Was it my appearance? I looked up at his thin, sunken face. He looked at me coldly. "What are YOU looking at, dog boy?" The face of my mother grew angry and stiff. "We do not speak this way in my household." Fukumata WILL get kicked out, Fukumata WILL get kicked out…I so desperately want him to! "Sweetie, will you please go outside and play for a while?" My mother smiled. I'm the one who got kicked out. And it was that darn Fukumata's fault! Nonetheless, I got up from my chair and went outside, happy to be away from there at last. I went over to the fountain and looked. My features were outlined by the crescent moon above. My hair sparkled a light silverish blue color. My eyes were as orange as the rising sun. I kept on staring down at my reflection, and longed for a new way of life, a better way. I turned around, and went to the courtyard. Bunches of people from mother's party were there. Some pointed. Some laughed. Some gave my ears painful tugs. "HANYOU!" One called. The rest of the people followed suit. Cries of "Hanyou! Hanyou!" deafened my ears, and soon, they all scattered, laughing at the confused look on my face. I then went to go embrace my mother, and found that stupid Fukumata was playing with my ball with another man. Tossing it across, back and forth, back and forth. I reached for my ball with my small five-year-old hands, but the men, being taller than me, tossed it even higher. "Give me back my ball!" I angrily leaped. When my feet touched the ground, Fukumata tossed me my ball. "You should have been killed at birth, Hanyou." He seemed intent on spoiling my day. But… WHAT was a 'Hanyou'? I ran over to my mother, and asked, "Mother, what's a Hanyou?" Tears filled her eyes, and she cried into my kimono. Fukumata had done his work. He had ruined my day. My birthday was tomorrow, so I'd count THAT as a HORRIBLE early birthday present. And I hated him for it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was in my bed, thinking of my mother's definition of the term 'Hanyou'. A Hanyou was a person with a human parent and a demon parent. Someone like me. I was so confused. I feel weird… as if there is an empty pit in my stomach… Scorned by the world. Abandoned with feelings of complete disgust. Only a few people put up with people like me. Like mother. She didn't have to keep me. She probably kept me because she felt sorry for me. Tears filled my eyes as I wished that that wasn't true. I want her to love me. I don't want to see her turn on me and hate me like everyone else. I want her to love me…I looked out of the window that was next to my bed. I looked at the stars, and saw the constellation of the dog. My mother told me that it was my father. He had died shortly after an attack from Ryuukotsusei, a lesser dragon ruler. He bled to death. Before he died, he asked mother to run away with me, and that my name was to be InuYasha. Mother never saw him again, and I never saw him at all. I looked up at the constellation of my father, and thought about how much I longed to at least see his apparition. I continued to stare out of the window, and I sighed. Suddenly, I heard mother's footsteps outside my door. I collapsed onto my bed about one second before the door opened. I opened my eyes just enough to see, and just enough to look like I was asleep. She came closer to me, and my heart pounded faster. She leaned over me, and gave me a little kiss on my cheek. I tried to keep still until my mother turned around, and left the room. She gave me a kiss! I feel somehow enlightened now. Then, I thought, "My life really must suck if I'm getting so happy over a kiss…" I tried to sleep. But I realized that it was quiet…TOO quiet. The crickets stopped chirping, and the stars disappeared until only the constellation of my father remained. I was hurting inside. I got up instantly when I heard this tiny voice inside my mind. [Flee! Danger approaches you! Run!] Not knowing what to do, I decided to follow the voice's instructions, and I ran. I ran out of the house. I ran to the stream. And I realized that my mother was still inside the house. I quickly turned back, and ran for our house. I opened the door
…And I was too late…
Mother lay on the floor, crying out in pain. I looked down at her body and gasped. She had been horribly assaulted. Her clothes were ripped, and she was covered in her own crimson blood. My stomach lurched, and I realized that I had seen this before… My mother was on the floor. A sheet was laid over the parts below her chest. Her face had a pained look. It was almost OBVIOUS that she was in labor. A strange warrior walked into the room with a weapon. Mother smiled. "Setsuna no Takemaru… Leave here, please… HE will not forgive anyone for coming here…" She winced in pain… How mean! She was giving birth and there was no one there to help her! I then remembered that I was a Hanyou, and no one wanted to be in the same room as a mother giving birth to a Hanyou.
Takemaru was saying something, but it was unclear, as if a pillow was muffling him. Then, I cleared my mind of all of the surrounding thoughts, and it was all clear again… "Even if your heart has been stolen by a mononoke…" I saw him raise his weapon delicately and dangerously if it were possible to be both at once…And he killed my mother…"My affections for you will never fade." He left the room. And there, under the blanket that covered my mother…
…Was a small Hanyou baby with silver hair, and dog ears. He…I…lay there, still connected to her umbilical cord crying my head off…dying. "NO!" I cried frantically. "I can't be dead if I'm here!" I cried bitterly, and collapsed onto my mortally wounded mother, not caring if my kimono was going to be stained with her blood. I wanted to see no further of this strange flashback. I had always had some flashbacks from the past, but this was a few minutes from before I was even born! But there was a tingling curiosity at the back of my head, asking me to see more… I decided to stop being a baby, and to find out what happened next… I had taken the mind of the baby, so since I was dead, I could see, or hear NOTHING. Not that I would be able to see anything if I was alive either. Baby dogs are born with their eyes closed and unseeing. After one week, they can see. I guessed that the same went for baby dog demons. It was pitch black. I could see nothing except for the endless darkness in front of me. But then, The silence lifted. I couldn't see anything, but at least I had my senses of smell and hearing back. I heard the sound of my mother's heartbeat against my head.
I sniffed the air. It smelled of metal and the air was filled with vibrations of a thin sword that had just cut through something. I caught a new scent. It was the scent of my father. He had brought us both back to life with his healing sword, Tenseiga. I let go of my flashback when my mother gave a moan. "Are the robbers gone?" She weakly asked. I lifted myself off of her mangled body, and I asked, "Who did this to you?" She looked up at me, and told me what happened.
"InuYasha… I couldn't sleep this night… I was too busy thinking about what Fukumata had said to you about being a Hanyou… I got up to check on you, and you were already asleep… I-I kissed you… I went to the other room across the pantry… and there they were… holding up s-some of my art and household appliances… I gasped, and t-they saw me… they… they…" She could not finish her sentence. "What did they do, mother?" I asked, worry filling my heart. "They r-r-r… I do not want to tell you, dear. But after they did what they did, they attacked me, and I d-didn't know what to do! I-I was so scared that t-they were going to hurt you! I-I didn't w-want this to happen… I wanted to be there f-for you until you were ready to g-get used to life h-here… B-but now…" "No, mother! You're NOT going to leave me…" I touched one of her wounds gently. "Not like this…" She smiled, and I gasped as her expression of happiness was mixed with pain. Tears filled her eyes as she smiled up at me. "I've always loved you… I want to die smiling in my bed with you next to me… just like the old days… InuYasha… How I love to savor that name on my lips… It is like being kissed by angels… I-I love you…InuYasha." Tears filled my eyes as I stared at her frail figure in the floor. "I-I wanted to give you t-this…" She put a folded piece of paper in my kimono, and smiled. "See it tomorrow, and guard it with your life…until your dying day… Love it…protect it…as I have loved and protected you…" Her eyes slowly closed. "Mother… MOTHER!" I pressed her chest against my head. Her heart still beat, but with a horrible hesitation. I lifted her up, for even if I am only five, I am still powerful enough to hold a grown woman, and I began to walk slowly down the hall with my dying mother in my arms. Blood fell from her body onto the floor. I finally came to a stop in front of her room, and I put her on her bed. It was pretty cold outside, so I went to close my mother's open window. I then turned as if I was in a trance, and got into bed next to her. I heard my mother say one thing.
"…I love you, InuYasha…"
I heard only one last sound after that, and that was the death song of the cicada. I awoke that morning with the sun tickling my face. I turned my head and turned to the beautiful form of my mother. I shook her to wake her up. "Mother! Get up! It's my birthday mother!" I shook her again. "Mother?" She wasn't moving. "Mother…?" Fear and worry filled my heart as I stared down at her. I remembered her last word. "InuYasha." I repeated. I broke down crying on my dead mother, thinking about all of her qualities. "WHY?" I asked no one in particular, "WHY DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE HER LIFE AWAY? WHY DIDN'T YOU KILL ME? I'M THE ONE THAT HAS NO REASON TO LIVE! TAKE ME TOO!" I cried even more, the tears mixing with the blood that had rubbed off of my mother onto me. "Why don’t you take me?" I asked pitifully. More of her blood was getting onto me, but I didn't care. Not anymore. Puffy eyed and tired of crying, I opened the small pouch on my kimono, and looked at the treasure that my mother had given me. More tears filled my eyes as I stared at the picture of my mother embracing me, smiling her soft, gentle smile, the beautiful smile that I would never see again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want to get used to life without my mother. I do. But I can't even get myself to hold a death ceremony for her. I was scared to go outside into the world without my mother. I could only go to the backyard. But I knew that I had to let her rest in peace. I went to the backyard and got ready to start a fire. My mother had always said that she wanted to be cremated, because the fire would purify her soul by sacrificing her body. So a cremation it would be. I was ready to start the cremation ceremony. I went inside to get mother's body. She was still beautiful, even in death. People had compared her to a flower, but now I could see that they were wrong. When flowers die, they are all withered, and ugly. Mother looked smooth and beautiful. Simply beautiful. I brought her body outside, and put her over the fire. I could not bear to see her body devoured by the flames, so I let my tears blur my vision. "Oh, spirits of the sky. Protect the soul of my mother as she ascends to heaven, and let her soul rest in peace forever." I bowed down in respect to the spirits in the heavens. I stayed for the rest of my birthday, and after the cremation ceremony, I took a few of her ashes for myself, put them in a small bag, and decided to go bury her remnants elsewhere. I knew that the only way out was outside, and although I was scared, I ran outside with my mother's ashes, and, by instinct, my ball. One woman came up to me and asked, "Where do you think you are going, Hanyou?" I knew her. Her name was Kagami, and she used to be my mother's best friend. I had been the one who tore them apart just by being alive. I hated Kagami almost as much as I hated myself. "I'm going to bury my mother. S-she died today." She looked at all of the bloodstains on my kimono. "I see. If Izayoi is dead, then I know ONE possible answer. OUT!" She pointed to the gate that led outside the village. "We hereby banish the Hanyou from our premises. If IT is to be caught here again, the punishment is DEATH." I was appalled. Everybody from the village was there, as if they had been planning it all! Fukumata couldn't be happier. He looked so happy that he would do anything. Tears filled my eyes. "So you have been awaiting my mother's death to do this? I wouldn't be surprised if YOU killed her!" I pointed an accusing finger at Fukumata, who tried his best to look innocent, but was so ugly that it seemed impossible to do so. "Actually, YOU are the one who killed her, dog boy. YOU have her blood on your kimono!" Fukumata said. The villagers all agreed with him. I had no choice but to leave. As I left, people threw stones at me, and yelled "Hanyou" triumphantly. To them, it was a sound of joy. The Hanyou was moving out. Why shouldn't they be happy? I hoped that the spirits would kill me too so that I would be away from all of these fears and sorrows. I found a perfect gravesite on a ridge. I used my hands to dig a hole for the box with her ashes in it, and I put it in. I looked around for a rock for a gravestone, and I found a large one by the ridge. It was perfect. I brought it to the spot where I buried mother, and I put it over the grave. Then came the etching of her name onto the rock. I lifted my hand up and wrote her name in hiragana with one of my razor-sharp claws. I had learned hiragana while mother was alive. It came out great. I went to gather some Izayoi flowers for the grave. The result was almost as beautiful as she was. I hugged the floor where she lay. I took out the ashes that I had kept for myself, and I hugged that too. It started to snow. My mother told me that angels made the snow using their tears of happiness and joy. I thought that mother was somewhere up there, making the snow...
Hicha, affie! I'm just coming by to say hello and that the shrine is as great as ever. Actually, there is something that I do need to tell you. Your link to Tangled Strings, the Kohaku fanlisting, is outdated. ^^;; How do I know this? It's because Neon adopted out the fanlisting to me. XD The new URL is http://www.cruel-summer.org/kohaku/. ^^;;
